Tindersticks

What is a man

Label: Beggars Banquet Release Date: 04/12/2000

twhitehouse by Tim Whitehouse December 4th, 2000

The Tindersticks first release on new label Beggars Banquet is a cover of what I am told is ‘the classic Four Tops song “What is a man.”' Recorded for the theme tune of new BBC Drama “The Sins.” It forces the Tindersticks into their weakest position. Optimistic and (yuck) happy.

Well this isn’t exactly S Club 7 but it does suffer from more than one note every ten seconds and is therefore ‘an up-tempo number.’ But it is still the Tindersticks and is saved from ultimate pishness because they’re a pretty good band. So what we have is a nice song about being a man, no stories of ruined romances though unfortunately. If we needed any proof that it was being released solely for the benefit of the BBC, the B-side is the exact some song without any singing.

Still, the new album is out next year. So that’s something to look forward to.
