Radio 2 is now the most listened to radio station in the country: hooray for easy listening power!!! Stiff Kittens sound; like their playlist; as though they are stuck in a time warp circa the late ‘80s and have taken inspiration from the “wrong” Manics era: Post Richie.

I don’t know exactly why but this demo falls short, they don’t have the “certain something”: they’re like Morrisey but without the ability to write poetic lyrics, the Manics but with no bite, New Order without the innovative tunes and Oasis at their most retro Beatlesish.

Try as I might I can’t like this record as you can tell that Stiff Kittens have yet to find their own sound and are attempting to filch ideas from other sources. ‘Bound ¢’’s subject matter is the same as the Manics’ ‘Little Elian’. Could be coincidence but the song itself is very Manicsy and it just feels as though they are trying to follow in their hero’s footsteps.

Come back when you have something that you can call your own, influences aren’t a bad thing…imitation is.

Stiff kittens - Strawberry Hill Demo

Dismissing post-Richey MSP is always the sign of an idiot. And it's "Baby Elian", not "Little Elian". Hell, the writers on this site are some of the most factually confused I've come across.

Re: Stiff kittens - Strawberry Hill Demo

facts? facts?

what are they but subjective, media filtered versions of reality

I've just spent an evening arguing the evils of a cover band playing 10-year old songs

hmmm.

ollie.

Re: Stiff kittens - Strawberry Hill Demo

Depends whether they're filtered by the media or not, I guess. Indeed, it depends upon your entire interpretation of philosophy but I shan't go there or my head'll hurt.

Were they a good covers band? That's the important thing.

Re: Stiff kittens - Strawberry Hill Demo

well, they're had 10 years to learn the songs, so it matter's little how well they ape the music/attitude etc.

The question is, why haven't they tried to do something of their own rather than happily sit back in teh shadow of a dead band? a band who, were the going now, would be tha age of most of the audience's parents.

ollie.

Re: Stiff kittens - Strawberry Hill Demo

Who are they covering? Perhaps it's because they have no songwriting talent? Crackpot theory, I know :o)
