Two Busy Foo Fighters + Two Tiny Tours
mrivers by Martin Rivers July 27th, 2003

Foo Fighters members Dave Grohl & Chris Shiflett keep themselves busy with side project type diversions...

In keeping with a well-established fondness for expanding his bands-I’ve-worked-with CV – Dave Grohl has been collaborating with former sludge doomsters turned dance punks Killing Joke on their new album.

Citing a desire to fulfil his marching band fantasies, Grohl met with vocalist Jaz Coleman during the Big Day Out Festival in Australia. One expedient friendship-kindling later and the former Nirvana member agreed to drum on the Joke’s new eponymous album (not to be confused with their 1981 debut of the same name).

Their latest offering is due out 14 July, and, to promote yet another resurgence to the music world, the band are doing a limited European tour – including an intimate sold-out gig at the Camden Underworld.

Occult enthusiast Jaz, when not fleeing to Iceland on the nigh of what he believed was the apocalypse, has long been at the forefront of experimental rock. A musical equivalent of Nazi concentration camp pre-geneticist Joseph Mengele, the controversial figure is widely revered and reviled alike for his seminal work in merging genres such as metal and dance.

If you’re going to V2003 don’t miss your chance to witness these true veterans of hardcore ingenuity – and for anyone who can’t make it to one of the shows; be sure to keep an eye out for the video of their new single Loose Cannon on Kerrang TV.

Meanwhile, another busy Foo Fighters member - namely guitarist Chris Shiflett - has been working on a side project of his very own: California power-trio Jackson, who have just released their debut album on Magnificent Records. And if you're into feel good, tried and tested rock 'n roll with sprinklings of punk here and there... they'll be right up your street.

Jackson's lineup also boasts Chris' brother Scott, and drummer Pete Parada from Saves the Day. Best of all, on the evening of August 21 you'll have the opportunity to see Jackson headlining a London Barfly gig, with none other than DiS' very own proteges The Koreans supporting! Not bad for seven measley quid.
