Suede to reform for one night only, charity gig

Seminal Brett Anderson-led British band Suede are to reform, albeit for one night only, specifically for a show at London's Royal Albert Hall. This is very much good news, and undoubtedly music to many people's ears.
Sources suggest that the line-up which will feature for the night will be the Coming Up incarnation, which doesn't feature guitarist Bernard Butler, but will be Brett Anderson, Richard Oakes (who replaced Butler), Matt Osman, Simon Gilbert and Neil Codling.
The show will be in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust, with the band long being supporters of various cancer charities, including donating their £20,000 Mercury Prize money in 1993 to Cancer Research.
The band split up after 14 years in 2003, after releasing five studio albums and countless memorable singles, including eight Top 10 UK hits in their time but, sadly and unbelievably, no number 1!

No Bernard Butler = no point
It all went tits up after Dog Man Star.
Coming Up's a brilliant album.
Different from the first two but great nonethleess.
They ran out of ideas a bit after that although even Head Music and New Morning had a mattering of great songs on them.
Not sure how I feel about them reforming though - I loved them but they do feel like part of the past...

I didn't mind Coming Up at the time, but I think that's only because everyone was expecting it to be shit and it wasn't. But listened to it again recently and have to say, did not think much of it. By The Sea is the only song worthy of Butler-era Suede. Beautiful Ones and Trash are ok...but the rest.......especially Starcrazy, which is dire. I didn't even bother with Head Music and the one after that everyone forgets about. But for a short time, 92-94, they were the best band in the world. The proof is not just in the two albums, but in the 16 amazing b-sides...that's like 2 extra albums on its own. Oh, and of course there was Stay Together.
it's unfair to
dismiss post-Butler Suede. They were never worse than solid (until A New Morning). Bulter hit higher highs but he also wrote complete dross, and now props up some of the shittest acts around. I doubt he's done a charitable thing in his life
Aye - the B-sides are amazing.
But I do stick by Coming Up, having listened to it fairly recently. I mean it does have two weak tracks - Starcrazy, as you say, and She. But I think Beautiful Ones and Trash are brilliant pop songs, By the Sea and Picnic by the Motorway are great and much of the rest of it is pretty damn good.
I mean obviously it's very different (and much more straight-forwardly pop) to the first two albums and doesn't touch Dog Man Star (though very few albums do in my opinion) but I do genuinely rate Coming Up.
I enjoyed that it's been billed as
their first gig in nearly 10 years... they played shows in 2003.
Brett Anderson's head now looks like a skull thinly covered by skin. Drugs are not special beauty medicine. Who knew?
