Following several weeks of voting, you have picked the winner of the Neptune Music Prize.
This is the second time we've done an alternative to the Mercury Music Prize (which is announced tomorrow) and the response this year has been phenomenal, with thousands of you rating the 12 DiS-selected albums.
There can be only one winner and with both the most votes and the highest average rating, the winner is Fantasy Black Channel by Late of the Pier (pictured: smiling). Congratulations gents, especially as you're one of the albums we assumed would make the Mercury list. We'll be in touch about taking you out for a fish 'n' chip supper and hopefully you can tell us about the forthcoming album, eh?
At the time of release, in his 8/10 appraisal of Fantasy Black Channel, Mike Diver suggested that...
"The album ultimately plays like a collection of could-be greatest hits rather than a single, smooth-flowing record, but perhaps that’s the point: what Late Of The Pier have showcased through their singles to date is an alarmingly commendable lack of focus, by which I mean they never explore one direction to its fullest extent before diverting off on another course entirely. It’s this free spiritedness that courses through this album’s veins, and it makes it an invigorating listen. This is a band completely unafraid to do whatever they like, and it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that their label has simply left them to their own devices throughout the gestation of Fantasy Black Channel. If that’s the case, I want to meet their A&R guy right away and shake his hand."
Listen to Fantasy Black Channel on Spotify, Last.fm or buy it from Amazon. Also, if you'd like to know more about the album, the band provided this fascinating track-by-track director's commentary of the album for us last year.
And the runners up, with almost the exact same scores and number and votes were Rolo Tomassi Hysterics and Grammatics Grammatics.

great album
nice
I only voted for two albums Late Of The Pier and Rolo Tomassi so its cool to see them at one and two.
Nice one LOTP
Not my fave album of the bunch, but I do really feel this fell through the cracks Mercury-wise because of when it was released, good for them.
Hmmm...
Well of the 5 on the list I'd heard (Micachu, LOTP, SFA, Phantom Band & TWTWas) this was actually my least favourite, with The Phantom Band being some way out in front.
But well done regardless boys, it's a good record.
Even if everyone on DiS is wrong about just HOW good...
Is the Right Answer!
brilliant, good to see the band getting some recognition
Good to see one of the albums I ranked highly
win. Especially as I didn't really care much for Grammatics and Rolo Tomassi.
Well done guys.
brilliant
album.
old fuddy duddy
Oh dear, I seem to be showing my age, as I didn't score any of these albums higher than some of the others when I voted.
new music holds its own
my top 3, albeit in the wrong order.
great to see 3 new bands making music that lives outside genre definitions winning this prize.
shame grammatics didn't clinch it though. what a record...
I like em...
but Phantom Planet should have won this easily.
Suppose I'll need to give these a listen then...
One of only two nominees I hadn't really heard so didn't rate - do think gramattics are just alright and Rolo Tomassi are fairly dreadful though.
Awesome!
I really love Fantasy Black channel and it was my favourite release of '08. Glad it won the Neptune:)
It's alright
I've just had another listen on Spotify. It's alright, like, but it's not going to change my world. The final song's hook is too similar to "Video Killed The Radio Star" for me to fully enjoy it.
Planet
hahahaha
great news
probably my favourite record on the list that i'd heard
well deserved
my fav uk album of the year hands down
ace
This went from an album I bought on a whim to one of my favourites of the last year, good to see it win, though i'd have been just as happy if the Phantom Band had won too
Far better albums on the list than
LOTP and Rolo Tomassi. Phantom Band or Manics should've won.
Fantasy Black Channel? Pfft....
This album was incredibly disappointing. The intro suggests something different than what you're about to get.
I listened to this one three or four times and shelved it.
