An Open Letter to Ryan Adams

Dear Mr. Adams,
O’ namesake, here’s a gentlemanly handshake.
Read your blog today, with the retort(s) to my report.
Will quit the mocking couplets. Now.
Firstly, the suggestion that your book might be something like Bukowski’s Post Office was a mixture of glib humour and some of the highest praise these keyboard-clunking fingers could bestow. It’s up there with Don Delillo’s Great Jones Street, which sits atop my favourite books list.
To my mind, all the best writers draw on their demons to flesh out their fiction, and as you say yourself, you’ve grown up very publicly and have become somewhat renowned as an abuser of whiskey and other such escape hatches... You're tetchy but fair enough, was only speculating content-wise, as your near-incomprehensible introduction to the book made for slim pickings.
As for you cussing me and my job to your fans/readers, I’d just like to take this opportunity to point out that it’s my job, nay, it’s my life mission to champion the music I love. It’s the same reason I started my label and why eight years ago I created Drowned in Sound as an arena for others to share their passion. Yeah, like anything, with love comes pain and there are asides and slights at people along the way. There are snarky tongue-pokes and sticks in bike spokes but that makes up about five percent of our output here on the site.
There’s a lot of love ‘round these parts, especially for your music.
Know thy enemy because you’re shooting at a barrel full of apples.
Show us what you’ve got.
We’d be more than happy to share an excerpt of your book with our readers.
Yours laying down the gauntlet...

Imagine if he read this, I'd be famous
That's a good point
Hi Ryan Adams! Would you like a cup of tea?
The whole "an open letter to"
thing is pretty pathetic. Just send the message to it's recipient and be done with it.
Hey Ryan
I would never have heard a note of your music if it wasn't for this site. As it is, I think I own every commercially available LP with your name on it because the writers and userbase here encouraged myself and others in that direction.
I even enjoy your blog, but you clearly haven't realised that most of the writing here is with a wink and a nod.
Stop thinking the whole world's against you when it's not.
...
This little tete a tete comes across a bit like those diatribes you get on myspace when someone's boyfriend has been wanked off by someone else behind their back. they get a little too soul searching and passionate in public for my liking
'mine is a life of the fight and the hope. and i am a fighter, i promise you that. you can keep your grubby mits wrapped around his cock, keep it. im better than both of you. i am so strong, ive been strong all my life. this once i'll let it slide because i pity you both. but cross me again and you will feel how much power i have in my soul'
im sure this shit can only breathe on the internet, in real life after ten minutes discussion everyone would just see each others point of view and then go get pissed and forget about it.
The article should have been called
Dear Chicago
Gosh,
I wonder if he'll send in a poo in a box. REMEMBER RYAN, DIS HAS MOVED.
WHAT IS THIS
go to bed drunky.
Why did Ryan get so pissed off here?
I don't really understand. Must have some proper issues going on. :-(
This is weird
like imaging my parents having sex weird.
Ryan Adams, Brian May, legions of Bright Eyes fans...
The DiS enemy list is growing!
...
lol
AMAZING SCENES
Good DiS is back!
This is great
I bet it is difficult to be Ryan Adams for the day. His punctuation is rubbish though.
I gather he gets really hacked off
when people point out what happens once a 'B' is appended to the front of his name, so I'm not going to be the person to do it.
And Taylor's loose-leaf Yorkshire Gold at that...
or it aint tea. It's, er, dust.
I don't think Ryan Adams reads this
Hell, I almost didn't
Ryan Adam's retorts
reminded me when the class idiot got in a blind rage. that's the kind of stuff he'd be shouting through tears while windmilling his arms.
i dont see any rage in the above article
more a desire to communicate.
the DIS vs ATP slapfest.. now that got a little furious!
I think that
if ryan adams makes a public statement in response to something that's been publicly written, then it's perfectly reasonable to do the same.
I have no idea what's going on
but I'm on Ryan's side!
FIGHTFIGHTFIGHTFIGHTFIGHTFIGHTFIGHT
DAMN YOU
too quick
Mine was the first comment under the now infamous book article
I was rude about Ryan.
Do you think he read mine?
Maybe it was me that tipped him over the (drunken) edge?
I'm going to be the one in the fight who jumps over the top to land a girly sucker punch!
aw.
I miss children, in tears, windmilling their arms.
Ryan's airline is shit.
Mushroom soup my ass!
toilet
when (b)ryan adams played a well known uk festival a few years ago - he demanded his own personal toilet and then said he wouldn't play unless the promoters found another band he could play impromtu drums with. after going through the bill with everyone turning him down they finally some poor sap who agreed. unfortunately i witnessed the resulting performance which lets just say was not good at all - acoustic singer songwiter strumming joined by someone throwing some bins down the stairs. but hey at least later on we got to see him and his bob seeger isms in all his glory
and im from barcelona played 'summer of 69' at the back of the field before he went on
and he was the only band of the whole festival that didnt start on time..
He didnt ask for his own toilet tho
RUN TO YOU
SING
RUN TO YOU!!!!!!!
Still
wish I was there.
Ryan Adams has the worst quality control sensor ever.
Yes, he's written good songs (Sylvia Plath is genius), but he's released an awful lot of crap as well. If that's what expressing yourself is, then I don't want to know about it.
Also, anyone who uses that many ellipses just for effect and thinks that randomnly
ending
lines counts
as poetry should have
their hands cut off.
That is all.
Ryan Adams
is a talented songwriter who's already gone down in music history as being one of the strongest, most prolific artists of the decade so far.
Drowned In Sound is one of millions and millions of websites saying pretty much the same thing.
His upcoming tour will sell out and he'll go home with lots of money and pride, earned from adoring audiences who appreciate almost every gem he digs out of his vast back catalogue hugely.
Sean - HIS label and a website where people 'share passion'
Ryan Adams - better
^
Ultimate mega-truth
Well
I know Ryan Adams will have a book out now
This is
The best thing since Patrick Wolf "quit music" after reading his own forum.
Fuck's sake
This is shit.
