dont bother protesting about wars and thwarted earthquake relief efforts in communist countries, just march on the most obvious of right-wing tabloids because they dont 'understand' it because they 'dont like it' or whatever.

so basically all protests are worthless unless they're regarding large scale events?
these kids feel that the daily mail is attacking and misrepresenting a band which is important to them. fair play to them for actually trying to do something about it. it's better than being completely apathetic.

that they're efforts could be much better placed than defending the reputation of a band.

The Daily Express is basically the same thing, but alot worse and alot more desperate. It's borderline racist. So why do people always go after the mail, there's clearly a more obvious target!

can't believe how many people I know (and love) in my elder generation that buy the Daily Mail - it really upsets me. Because after learning the basics of politics and rooting to buy the independent, I find it particularly difficult not to strangle all of them when I hear them talk about politics in the most non-sensical, ignorant manner.
The Daily Express is probably a tad worse - you get proper racists browsing about on their forum. But Daily Mail is bought by a mass audience making it all the more lethal.

I read some of those articles in the Mail and they were very sensationalist, ill-informed and biased covering the threat of the emo death cult.
Of course, it's not like newspapers really need to worry about fair and factual these days when there's a good scare story to get on the go.

It does pretty much seem to be a lot of people marching to curtail free speech.

The Daily Mail article may well have been full of bullshit but, as they point out, they do have a right to reply (by writing to the papers or posting comments under the stories) and there is a Press Complaints Commission anyone is free to complain to if they feel a newspaper is out of order.

On the whole any protest much be to achieve something and I'm just not clear what this one is setting out to achieve given there are already channels in place to register dissatisfaction with a newspaper's content.

if anything it's an attempt to give a voice to the people whose voices have been excluded by the mainstream newspress in the coverage of this 'emo suicide' story.
If anything, however haphazardly they've done it these kids are finding trying to find a voice which balances out the bias in the reporting - I don't think they're saying the daily mail should never ever print anything about emo (of course they might be I'm not sure) but that if it is going to cover something then it should do it factually, honestly and in a way which takes in both sides of the story the way I think good news reporting always should.

of course, the mail can say (in private) this isn't just news reporting this is newspaper reporting and we can be as bile-fueled and wildly bias as we like and if you don't like then go and buy a paper that only covers things that enforce your own world view and leave us and our wilfully il informed prejudices alone.
