Godspeed You! Black Emperor: Iraq war made it impossible to continue
Efrim Menuck (pictured) has revealed to DiS that the band he’s been a core member of since 1994, acclaimed instrumental collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor, are hugely unlikely to ever return to record-releasing or touring ways. One factor: the war in Iraq.
Speaking to Gareth Dobson to promote the new A Silver Mt. Zion LP, 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons (released March 10), Menuck remarked:
“The last American tour that Godspeed did was in the run up to the current war in Iraq. For what Godspeed did, it was very difficult for us to work out a way for us to communicate directly with the audience about what was going on. We would talk to people after the shows, or we could make announcements from the stage but so much what Godspeed was, was one-way communication.
“And I had an existential freak-out about that. That those tactics aren’t valid anymore.
“People didn’t need a rock band pointing in the direction of [how the world was at that point]. Maybe what they needed is some clumsy words, a presentation that was a little more human.
“On a personal level I now find [Godspeed You! Black Emperor] to be inappropriate [to do]. There’s a complicated back story. I reached a point whereby I was no longer willing to contribute to the steering of the ship; it was like, ‘Okay now, someone else point the direction, I love all of you, but I need to ride shotgun for a while’.
“I think that bands do have a short shelf life… they should be able to ply their trade ‘til they no longer want to.”
Godspeed have been on ‘indefinite hiatus’ since 2003, but have never stated that the band is completely done and dusted. Menuck’s comments here, though, seem to imply that the band has run its course. It's certainly the strongest hint yet.
Our full interview with Menuck will run later this month, ahead of the release of 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons.

“We should offer a free trumpet with the CD and then the last part you play yourself!”
Disappointed
but not surprised.
damn it
fuck you george bush!!!
what a lemon.
great band but come off it.
its a shame
as good as ASMZ are (i really like them)i still prefer godspeed... , ASMZ arent half as good live
^this
As much as I like the music they often come across as po-faced, self important pseuds.
I don't think they're ..
being 'po-faced' I really do think they just believe deeply in what they do.... (hence why godspeed's music is so beautifully intense and inspiring).. i think there's complete sense in what he's saying.
I sound like a tosser but still.
i'd debate that
while i'd struggle to say silver mt zion were better than godspeed live, i would never say they were half as good as they're an incredible live band in their own right.
I have to say I agree
If you're involved in any sort of political action you end up having 'message' based crises all the time.
No you don't...
I was probably a little harsh. It's the lack of apparent lack of perspective I suppose. I don't know whether these type of quotes are pulled from interviews because that's what people expect to read in a Efrim piece, but sometimes I feel it veers a little close to parody. I do appreciate his dedication and passion, but his life must be exhausting. There must be times when he lightens up and goes outside and throws a frisbee or something?
I'm definitely looking forward to reading the full interview though.
Can someone
Explain to me what the fuck he's talking about?
Basically
Godspeed didnt use lyrics. When the Iraq war happened Efrim felt he had to be more obviously and openly political in terms of music. By incorporating lyrics into ASMZ more openly he felt able to communicate a political message more clearly.
Thats an oversimplification but it seems to be it.
Imagine
being this guy's friend. Down the boozer and you just want to chat about hand lotion...nightmare. Good band, though. Shame.
Oh right
Yeah, he's got a point; there really isn't enough anti-Bush wind-pissing in alternative music. It's great that the outlet of ASMZ has allowed him to usher in the political revolution he's had up his sleeve all along.
FOR FUCKS SAKE
I think thats over reacting slightly
If you listen to Yanqui the band has clearly run its course. The next album they would have made wouldnt have been as good.
If you dont want to hear about politics, dont be a Godspeed fan.
thats odd
it is a bit like not giving your opinion incase people won't all have the same belief as you.
mind you, it must be a bit like coming home from school and finding the bully doing your mum on your bed.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
ah well, it had already happened rerally.
:D
What a pretentious tosser.
yea i love both
bands but half as good as godpeed... live is AMAZING still.
agree
didn't understand half of that article except that they clearly are wankers.
The only..
thing is he isn't down the pub chatting to his mate or in the park throwing a frisbee - he's being spoken to by a journalist, being asked about his artistic intentions and his state of mind in terms of what he does musically. You know what i mean?
He might be a right dull sod but i think its unfair to throw that at him when he is being asked to discuss his musical (artistic whatever..) motivations...
sorry to piss on the parade
but at no point does he actually say they're splitting up.
it was put in somewhat stronger terms
in your mailout. but then i know 'DiS exclusive - godspeed split' is always going to be an attractive way of spinning things.
Was that in the mailout?
Yeah, a little spin then.
yep
or at least in the one i received.
seconded
it was a bit obviously going to happen. still, a bit bloody annoying.
I dont understand this at all
what some one said ^ makes sense about him needing to be more vocal about his beliefs and hence a silver mt zion being more appropriate but that is not what he says in the interview, what is the one way communication he talks about.
He's no more Po Faced
than some other critically acclaimed bands I could mention.
I love UXO thats a beautiful album, not got much else by them....any reccomendations?
at least we still
have Babyshambles
FFS
GOddamit Reform! I never got to see you! REFORM!
i don't see
efrim reforming for the money any time soon.
I'm glad
that I'm not that easily derailed.
'Ah, I have these career ambitions but OH NO A CONTROVERSIAL INTERNATIONAL SITUATION has rendered me unable to do my job properly, so I've taken five years off and now I quit.'
The Iraq war isn't even in the top ten bad things happening in the world at the moment, just the one most relevant to a bunch of highly precious Canadians.
This is really pathetic. If you're not able to do your job because of the political situation in your country and the military situation in other countries, then you probably shouldn't be trying to be 'political' in the first place. Poor effort, boys.
clocking in at the old boredom factory
you talk as if writing and performing music is just clocking in down at the local factory...he's still making music, most of them are (or promoting it, or running venues, or recording bands).
politics and trying to relate to an audience or to communiate something is part of his music (and most music for that matter), so it got to the point where godspeed was not the most appropriate way to convey what he wanted...hence ASMZ....if it was a band who really was there just to entertain random sod in some pub, playing covers, then maybe you could call it pathetic, but would rather a shitty contrived godspeed record playing, shitty feel good concerts just cause some git was bitter they didn't play exactly they way the wanted to?
I think the initial appeal of godspeed and most good music is exactly the opposite of that. They make passionate music, when the passion for it's gone, it's pretty sad to see someone playing, just 'cause it's there job and they can't do anything else.
I'd rather listen to ASMZ or see shows at La sala rosa or hear records recorded at hotel2tango, that people where actually excited about, than see godspeed go through the motions.
i like the idea
of the band being finite, to be able to say that his intentions were no longer being met by the band's form. The whole Hotel2Tango diaspora is interesting enough even without Godspeed as a flagship group, and it's fitting that it's legacy is messy, muddled but driven by something other than just music as entertainment. Viva la pretentious twaddle if that's what it is, at least there won't be a decline in quality and a loss of dignity
I still don't understand though
how is ASMZ any less 'one way communication' than godspeed was
I mean what you say makes sense but thats not what he said
Ill be interested to read the full interview
LOL DIS
"The Drowned in Sound thing is a misquote, I'm in the middle of dealing with it now. It's true, Godspeed hasn't existed for years, we've been on permanent hiatus since 2002. If and when we do call it quits permanently, it won't be because of the Iraq war."
Efrim on Pitchfork.com
^^^^
LOLZZZZ efrims gonna tell on them.
although to be fair, dis never really stated the band was officially over and done with.
just that its more of a certainty now.
and anyway, the new zion record is excellent.
so whatev.
oh wait he does
I should read things properly
Yeah.The Pitchfork thing was funny
Although thumbs up for putting a DiS link on their page
misquote + smiley cannibals
=
shit storm sail on
I think that you are a jackass.
godspeed won't let me listen to their music if i don't care about politics?
