When you hear the word ‘pimp’ I can near enough guarantee you think of a tall black man sporting a fetching afro and colourful velvet suit, oh can’t forget the spangly pinky rings either. You perceive that they speak with a so called pimp accent picked up from cheesy 70’s movies and have dollar bills hanging out their stuffed pockets, and walk in that always dropping one knee way to make sure everyone knows he’s the ‘daddy’ of the block.
Well sadly now we’re in the double zero years things have changed and although the word still means the dude selling his girlfriend to desperate customers it’s taken on a whole new meaning that applies just as much to women as it does men. That’s another thing taken for granted in movies… why are all pimps men?
The meaning I’m referring to is not to far away from the original meaning. Pimp means confidence in yourself.
The movie pimps showed extreme confidence within themselves, evident by their ability to keep their whores happy and making sure everything goes their way no matter what it takes. Fast forward to the modern day and the pimps are the ones on the dance floor not giving a fuck about what people are thinking, their the ones not afraid to start a conversation with someone instead of firing off round after round of pathetic pick up lines. Confidence is everything to a pimp.
Being a pimp is a lifestyle of feeling good and being yourself, not trying to fit in because the self belief you ooze attracts people to you. It’s kind of hard to explain thoroughly so simply take the test below to see if you’re a modern day pimp.
1)You like to start conversations with strangers of the opposite sex YES / NO
2)You dress the way you do because it makes YOU feel good YES / NO
3)You’re not afraid to say what you think to people YES / NO
4)You nearly always make new friends when you go out. YES / NO
5)Have you ever been the only one on a dance floor ‘getting down’ YES / NO
If you answer YES once or twice you’re not a pimp but your showing great signs of some hidden confidence, WELL DONE! You should be proud that you’re not the guy who sits in the corner all alone, you’re at least trying to embrace the whole feel good factor
If you answered YES to three or more questions congratulations, you’re a fully-fledged modern pimp of the highest order. You ooze confidence and by the sounds of it make people happy when you’re around. However there is one loop hole, pimps are not obnoxious or annoying, they know when to be quiet or when a joke has gone to far… Pimps like to have fun but not at the expense of others.
Ok I’ll be honest, this is just my attempt to change the meaning of a very common word, but if you think about it the new meaning does make a lot of sense in a strange topsy turvey way. So embrace this new idea and preach the good word of PIMP.
Thanks for reading and I hope you don’t think I’m strange.
