Ugly, cynical marketing!
"We just want people to read our informative articles and make it worthwhile for everyone".
Balls. You want more hits to get more subtlely-placed adverts and more cash.

Re: Spread this to your friends..

Oh yeah, this keeps me loaded this work does. Ain't that right everyone?

Re: Spread this to your friends..

No, the "subtlely-placed adverts and more cash" are to fund the site so that it can move forwards, become better and more respected and expand to take on new ideas and challenges. A lot of people put a LOT of effort into this site totally free of charge. If it wasn't going to get any further - if there was nothing new and exciting on the horizon, what would be the point?

It can't fail because we're all alternative/underground/commercial/whatever else music fans ourselves.
You'll be eating your words when DiS really IS one of the best, most influential and comprehensive music media resources out there :)

Re: Spread this to your friends..

"more"? We don't make ANY money.

Re: Spread this to your friends..

Hmm. So what's your deal with Tower Records then? Real DIY, anti-corporate, in-it-for-the-music stuff I bet.
And to the other responses. I'm sorry, but there are a billion internet resources out there that are 100% in it for the love of it, that don't need to secure 'financial security'. And belive me, from browsing this website four or five times, it's going to be a while before your contents can compete with the decent music/film/critic sites out there.

Re: Spread this to your friends..

We're trying this thing out with Tower Records. We get a small precent of sales caused by dis. Same goes with the blueyonder banner.

You points are totally inversed. Our sites quality can't go up until there is atleast one full-timer, but we can't do that without money to cover rent and all that.

All this being DIY and anti-corporate nonsense is rubbish. The most successful and historic things which have happened have needed some kind of funding for sustainability - would be a bit dumb me getting to a point where my computer is reprosessed. People need to eat and a roof over their head. Coasting on the systems dole money, using resources which are meant for someone else. We all do this and have done this for 2years for the 100% love of it so don't give me that shit!

Compromise isn't as bad as failure.

Re: Spread this to your friends..

You forget about Dischord, Mr.Adams. They are, like, so totally corporate. It's cos they have never tried to make income. Or did they. To survive? Oh no. That's not allowed.

Re: Spread this to your friends..

Hey Sean. I don't really have a gripe with you needing a bit of cash to keep this place running. That's fair enough.
My only real qualm was with your deeply cynical marketing ploy ("send it to you friends! tell them we're great!"). Surely, you can promote yourself without having to spam someone's email account?

And Tower Records? Deary me, without wanting to refer back to the previously mentioned 'punk ethic' (an 'ethic' riddled with contradicitons, in my opinion), this surely stands for everything you're against? DIY, in-it-for-the-love-of-it, word of mouth over advertising scamming. Music enthusiasm at it's purest, grass roots level.

The thing about punk on major labels, is that the bands in question constantly attempt to justify their compromise through a re-definition of 'selling out' (I know, yawn). All it boils down to is, is money important to you? Can you create what you want to create without money?

I'm not quite sure what that Dischord-related post was saying. Are Dischord corporate? True, they exist as a fully-functining record label, but they're the antithesis of everything corporate.

Re: Spread this to your friends..

DIS is run by amateurs, who do it for the love of music, in their own spare time. Hence the quality of writing is variable in places, but what is most important that the passion and good intent are there. I don't see any wrong in promoting companies that are willing to help us, especially as we don't place a strong emphasis on being subversive/anti-capitalist. We are first and foremost a music site, not an ethical discussion forum.

Re: Spread this to your friends..

Can you move your moped please, it's blocking my Ferrari.

Re: Spread this to your friends..

Oh come on. Don't you think we all spend hours plugging the site on message boards and promoting it at gigs etc? What's the point in us putting all this effort in if no one's going to read it?

This article is no cynical marketing ploy. It's us asking the people who use this resource totally free of charge to spread the word so we can reach an even wider audience. Surely every website has to do promotion, otherwise there's no point in it's existance? Us having more readers will not mean that ANY of us get paid a single penny. It will, however, increase our community and make for more interesting dicussion on the message boards, via the weblogs and messaging system AND more importantly, let more people know exactly what a brilliant resource we've got here so that they can use it when the need/want and make our efforts all the more worthwhile.

As far as I'm concerned, that is pretty damn DIY. It's not like we're taking out thousands of pounds worth of advertising on radio 1 with our money earnt by letting corperate scum obss us about and tell us how to run the site.

I don't mean to sound rude, but I do think you've taken this all the wrong way completely and to all the people who put hours upon hours of often boring and tedious time into making this site what it is for NO money AT ALL, your comments could be quite offensive.

I think maybe you should stop being so narrow minded and realise that just because an organisation earns money (not that we do), it does not mean that it's "selling out" or being bossed around by some money grabbing office types...
