In photos: Islands in London

DiS trundled down to Hoxton on Tuesday to catch Canadian pop-oddballs Islands on their DiS-sponsored tour of these isles. Here, we have some yummy snaps. Yummy.

Looks good.

Why exactly did they cancel their glasgow gig though?

glasgow

not sure. i saw them at bristol thekla on the 21 feb (the day before they were due to play Glasgow) and they didn't appear to be too happy with things. the sound at the bristol gig was awful and the crowd weren't really into it either. still cool band though. bx

That...

sounds pretty much like the Hoxton gig to be honest.

I like them but sadly that night really did not push any buttons.

Disclaimer:

I don't think it was a reflection on the band - just didn't seem to be as vibey as previous times i've seen them.

me too

.

yep

I didn't really enjoy it all that much. Though that might just be because I'm not familiar with the new stuff, which there was obviously plenty of.

I agree wholeheartedly

while it all sounded pretty good I couldn't really get into it all that much. They've moved away from the more poppier sound as well and almost sounded a bit like (dare I saw it) Arcade Fire at times. Maybe it's just the violins that did it.

The vibe at the Hoxton gig wasn't helped by the singer clearly being thoroughly unimpressed with the venue, and the mic stand, which was rather amusing.

I thought it was good

although it should have been amazing. Musically it was superb, and as someone who doesn't really know much about Islands (except a couple of songs) the fact it was mostly new stuff wasn't an issue.

The atmosphere was totally off though- the band obviously didn't want to be there, and the lack of familiar songs combined with Hoxton soullessness meant the audience wasn't up for it either. Once the new album comes out and everyone's more familiar with the tracks, I reckon they could put on a truly outstanding show, but as it stands I came out slightly underwhelmed.

the audience

(myself included) really didn't seem to be into it did they? It was a shame as I've been wanting to see them since I heard Return to the Sea and spent a whole summer driving round listening to it. Hopefully you're right and after the new album is released and they tour again it'll be alot better.

it did feel a bit subdued

and even Swans felt a bit anti-climactic in the encore. I definitely thought there were hints of Arcade Fire there as well, particularly when they did that Sinead O'Connor cover (which I quite enjoyed).

Thought that support band was pretty shit, though.

Yeah

the support band were crap. The best I can say for them is that one of their songs sounded like sub-par Battles.

I enjoyed it too..

..but this may have been due to the amount of double vodkas i consumed that evening.

The sound

at Hoxton was awesome! Don't know what you're whining about.

Also

could someone tell photographer Lucy Johnston that it's common knowledge (and courtesy) that you don't take photos past the 3rd song. She was snapping away right till the end, and it was getting pretty fucking annoying. Assuming it was Lucy, but I didn't seen any other female photographers with decent kit taking photos right till the end (Apologies if it wasn't). Otherwise, i enjoyed it, regardless of whether they seemed like they wanted to be there, they were incredibly tight (bar a few false starts), and the new stuff sounds awesome.

maybe

...

Common knowledge?

Unless a venue outlines such a policy, generally photographers are free to shoot for as long as they wish. Unless prompted by disgruntled crowd members, chances are they'll shoot right through.

If it truly annoyed you, you should have asked if she minded stopping. I know I've done that to photographers before.

Fair dos

Who's whining now?!

Of course Diver is completely right that otherwise stated its general policy to shoot through.

I wouldn't mind but not all were taken with flash. Anyway I had in fact stopped taking shots by the last few songs (bar few shots taken during the encore). Anyway i really don't have to justify my professionalism to such an arsey post.

And yeah you should have spoke to me - i would have of course have been considerate.

Replies duly noted.

I'll be sure to voice any annoyance that I may suffer at further gigs where our paths may cross. And yeah, I'm aware I'm whining. I'm a serial whiner. Sorry, the post wasn't actually meant to be so arsey, it had just been one of those days and I off loaded it here.

are you

Nick Diamond?
