It shouldn't really work but I have found that the physical effort of concentrating seems to make me tired. It's also mentally tiring: I've sometimes found it impossible to solve a particular clue only to leave it overnight and realise it was actually really easy, only my brain was to knackered to work it out.
sub-conscious obvs. just thought I'd leave it like that.
So no counting sheep, no solving puzzles, no posting on forums or playing games.
Reading is good but stick to books (rather than tablet/laptop etc)so that you can fall asleep mid-line for it not to matter. But what I've found really works for me in recent times is listening to people talking - podcasts seem the best for this. If I'm having trouble sleeping I just cue up several talkshows and before too long I'm out like a mofo.

repeat. dont do anything else.
that's fairly easy.
emptying your stomach and chest of rice isn't particularly conducive to sleep though.
To the point where i am off to see my GP about it.
Finding it really hard to switch off at night!

Maybe i need to get on the valis.
Tablets definitely work for some people but they do have side-effects and it can be hard to come off them.
And of course read some article on the bbc website yesterday that scientists reckon a lack of sleep is as bad for your heart as drinking or smoking! Fuck right off!
I give in, get up, and go and read in the living room. Mildly productive, focuses the brain away from all the crap that's swilling around in there, and after 30mins to an hour I find I'm nodding off and ready for bed again.
There's no point lying there not sleeping, if it's not happening, it's not happening.
always knocks me out.
