Seasons of Bullshit: A Running Summer Football Thread
Not much point having more than one, is there? Unless some jumped up indie prick thinks the Confederates is important enough to justify one. We'll jump that prick when we get to it.

I'd just like to be the first to say
Next year is Liverpools year *taps nose puts the family home on a Liverpool double*
Looking forward to this thread being the focal point of DiS' interest in the Women's Euros this summer
Nailed on Germany v Sweden final I reckon
England will do well to reach the semis
I reckon I'll be reaching a semi many times throughout the tournament!
OI OI etc
Sepps & Blatts
To kick us off:
Crystal Palace edge out Watford thanks to Kevin Phillips in a fist-bitingly crap game at Wemberlay. Holloway immediately opens talks with Moyesy to let him keep Zaha for another season.
England Ireland on tonight, in what is already described as on tonight. The usual suspects quickly dispatch their sick notes.

Four replies in, already ruined.

Aren't we gonna have a big end of season review thread
in which we all post meandering, in-depth dissections of how our clubs/Manchester United did?
I'm starting a Mourinho schoolgirl crush thread when he's announced and there's nothing you or anyone else can do about it. Apart from ban me.
a season review thing could be fairly interesting
How do you think Manchester United got along?
...
http://abload.de/img/moureturrrrrnedj4n.gif
Can we just have weekly ones rather than one rolling thread?
This thread will get way too long pretty quickly, there's as much chat about transfers on here than actual games.
I'll make another one.
First prick successfully hurdled.
We'll be needing a daily AS Monaco Transfer Rumour thread
You did what you could
do I hear a bit of cattiness in the voice there?
You don't 'hear' messageboard posts, you fucking dolt.
Also, no.
Actually just looks like you heard my advice and took it on board
But whatever looks good on your CV
Ian Holloway is a good, uncool manager
Play-off final win; decent fist of keeping a poor side in the PL; narrow play-off final loss; play-off final win - not a bad last 4 seasons by anyone's reckoning.
I'm sure the warm fuzz I feel for him right now
will dissipate roughly 30 seconds into his third aggressively folksy post-match interview next season.
nah, it's boomtime for novelty managers
Holloway, Di Canio, Pochettino still refusing to communicate except via an impossibly deep-voiced translator, David Brent, Jose...
I'm all for it.
i really hate that translator
I know it's really easy to take the piss out of Rodgers
or go on about his Brentisms, but the quote about him being his own mentor is out-right superb. It's a gift from the gods.
I think he's actually crazier than Di Canio
No sane man leaves a gigantic painting of themselves up when a camera crew comes around to their house. But the cast-iron proof is the hair - true lunatics don't have a proper comprehension of how they appear. A man with sideburns squared off that aggressively is dangerous
That's what's so good about him
it's not just tenuous "of course Wenger won't have seen it" type lols, he geuninely keeps coming out with absolute pearlers. My favourite has to be;
"I've always said you can live for a few days without water, but you can't live a second without hope"
Can't imagine what a bunch of 20-30 year old millionaire dimwits make of it all.
Fuck off.
Blackpool should've been world beaters that season, and you know it.
Just want to share an absolutely storming sad face:

doesn't feel right that all the big signing are happening in france.
what happened to the days when lyon were the biggest team and were lucky to even make the latter stages of the champions league?
That Everton badge thing is really kicking off
Don't most fans moan a bit when it happens and then it all dies down again 24 hours later?
Someone should just tell them to remember they're at least not Tottenham - a chicken standing on a ball. Nothing you can do with that
Oooh, I didn't read about this until now
It's very MLS, isn't it?
really laughed at that angry facebook group when it only had 120 members
https://www.facebook.com/EvertoniansAgainstTheNewBadge
but now it's got 289 and has earned my respect
i remember feeling vaguely aggrieved when the utd badge changed a bit
so i can't really talk, but if anything the new everton badge is better than the old one. there's not a lot you can do with a weird fairytale pointy tower. it's probably good that they've ditched the "only the best will do" motto as well, given, well, y'know.
agreed, that's a proper delusionally smalltime slogan

:D
my mate from uni was on Radio City yesterday
He's like the mouthpiece of angry Evertonians.
Best thing about it was within the first 20 seconds of a conversation about a badge, he's mentioning "Dixie Dean, Alan Ball and the School of Science". LOVE IT.
I'm actually quite happy the French league is getting some investment.
Although I would have preferred it to not be PSG or Monaco. It'd be cool if Marseille and Lyon were turned back into really strong sides.
PSG are okay
Since they have a large, relatively non-suffering fan base to back up this ambition to be a big club. Monaco on the other hand...well, I said my piece in the weekend thread
PSG fans are pretty horrible though
well they were, i'm sure like Chelsea they've been gentrified now
Not much

Hang on ...
We AREN'T horrible any more?
Nobody tells me anything.
horrible in a different way innit
where are the headhunters now? I ask ya.
PSG were founded in fucking 1970
martinez leaves wigan
probs to everton no?
That would make me happy
because it means Poyet ends up stuck with Wigan.
Wigan could be an interesting prospect for someone like Poyet though.
I can see Wigan struggling, given that they're losing their manager and quite a few of their first-team regulars. But the flip side to that there will be plenty of scope to shape the squad as the incoming manager wants.
they're going to have to play about 5,000 games next season
so a new man should get plenty of experience with his team
Yeah but mainly
it gives us a chance to beat him twice a year.
Poyet might not get the Wigan job either, their assistant manager's really highly rated isn't he?
Been linked with coaching role at United in the past (I think) and interviewed for the top job at Swansea last summer.
With Martinez and half the squad leaving it would probably make sense (and be much cheaper) to give him a go
Poyet
I don't think Poyet will get a new job for a while considering he will be in a legal battle with Brighton.
what I really want now
is for the chairman of every applicant for the Wigan job to gob off to the press about how negotiations are proceeding with Dave Whelan
how many stadiums are named after Allianz?

Kolo Toure to Liverpool
Lolz?
No Lolz from me dependent on what they paid
Fine as a third choice cb for a top-6 club
It's Kolo 'car salesmen who hides in showers' Toure.
There are huge lolz even if he's playing for a shiny penny a week.
*Francois
You're forgetting the wife's diet pills as well. He's worth about 5 lols-per-season or so?
He's been a very solid back-up this season and should easily displace Skrtel.
Honestly don't know why we haven't offered him a rolling one year contract, given J-Lo is very likely to leave too.
Why would Everton hold talks with Martinez? Talk about buying into the hype!
He's the footballing equivalent of The Palma Violets
Great band
Actually quite good and unfairly derided by people who want to seem cooler-than-thou?
I agree.
Everyone stop being snide cunts!
Can't stand palma violets. Terrible sweets.
Anyway, I tend to agree with this. Obviously he won the FA Cup this season, but Wigan have pretty much been bumping along the bottom of the Premiership under his tenure. So I can't really see why Everton would be that interested when they're aiming (presumably) to at least maintain their current position.
Probably still a better bet than Hughes, mind.
More a question of who would want the job I guess
Lot of pretty grim names on the rest of the shortlist. One big plus Martinez has to his name is his ability to cope with his club inevitably selling their best players each summer, which is certainly something he's going to have to do at Everton.
I think he's probably worth a punt, given that absolutely noone is going to take them any higher than Moyes did.
True.
I suppose they're not a position to say to any potential managers that they'll have cash to spend now or in the forseeable future.
So, technically, Benitez hasn't seen out his entire Chelsea contract.
I'm going to consider this a sacking :)))
You'd have thought he'd sign for another couple of years so Chelsea got a little bit of compo
love that this has become a thing
He had a contract??
Been trying to get more perspective on Monaco...
Read more than once that some believe their rise will help Ligue 1 in general, that the influx in great players will encourage other players to stay at/come to other French clubs. That can't be true, as Monaco/PSG will dominate the top two, meaning no other club can challenge and only one has any chance of Champions League football. If I were at Marseille/Lyon/Lille etc I'd get out fast. There will be exceptions, apparently one of monaco's best youngsters has signed for Nice, but soon others will catch on.
Oh and also
This may be true of most rich clubs...but if you're some of the players who have been with the club for years, through relegation and everything, you'd be encouraged to hear your owner say he's not looking to overspend or just focus on signing superstars. So then you'd be entitled to think "oh fuck off" when they spend over £100 million on 3 players on god knows what salary.

His road is a long one
Get ready to love Monaco...
I'm ill at home so can we do season review and transfer dreams/realities threads today?
Start it.
The review one. Fuck the other one.
Sounds as if Hughes really is going to be the new Stoke bombardier
Talk about failing upwards.
If Martinez gets the Everton job, the first two vacancies to be filled this summer will be by a just-relegated manager landing a top 6 job - surely a first? - and the architect of the biggest cowboy number in PL history being immediately given a job better than the one he just butchered mercilessly.
Avram Grant for Fulham?
Having gotten rid of a guy
who spent millions to tread water whilst playing dreadful football and assembling a squad of absolute dross, Coates hires...Mark Hughes. Just brilliant. I hope they bury each other.
I don't bear the malice towards them that most do
mainly because I actually feel a bit sorry for their fans - primarily because they have to live in Stoke, but also because it's not their fault the team is so boring. When it comes down to it, they have just as much to do with the way Swansea play as a swaggering Swansea fan has to do with the way Stoke play i.e none. But all the same, it would be delightful to see Hughes relegate them and have his degradation become complete
Roque Santa Cruz has already packed his bags
Doesn't look like the Stoke fans are too pleased about the prospect
if this guy's anything to go by:

turns out Bale might not be staying after all
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/may/29/gareth-bale-tottenham-hotspur-real-madrid
would be really quite funny if they lost him
and their only other activity this summer was to fail to attract leandro damiao for the tenth time.
surely if you were him you'd leave, no?
if a bigger club was interested then yep, no question.
depends if villa and damiao come
maybe another attacking midfielder too and they'll be contenders
he's only 23 though
I'd be in no rush if I was happy with my team mates & manager and home life
I'd give it a couple more seasons and move on at 25 if the prizes are still out of my grasp by then
Skrtel linked with Arsenal today.
Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease be true. Weakening one of our relatively close rivals (ie. one of the clubs outside what will probably next season be a 'big 3') and earning some money at the same time would be a great bit of business.
The signing of Kolo Toure on other hand is slightly depressing. He has experience, but he's still shit.
Incorrect pal. He looked decidedly okay whenever he played for us this year.
On a free as a back up he's fine for a year.
fair play.
The best judges of a team's centre-halves are their own supporters, as you see them more than anyone. So I will take your word for it. I just know that when I've seen him I've thought he was past it. Hopefully you're right and this is the start of a shrewd summer for our scouts.

liverpool sign iago aspas
they're really stockpiling forwards aren't they? perhaps sterling will go on loan next season, or borini
Or maybe they know Suarez has been sat in the car park pointedly looking at his phone for weeks now
Why can't we sign some normal looking footballers?
This'll be our third different player who looks like a clenched fist.
Oh fuck everything
We've also activated his release clause. If they'd waited to see if Celta got relegated it would have been €3m less. Great work.
Surely Liverpool have just agreed to meet the clause,
whatever that clause proves to be?
I think they've jumped the gun to fight off (possibly non existent) competition.
england team;
England: Joe Hart, Glen Johnson, Phil Jagielka, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge

but I won £20 to cover some postage costs so everything's good in the world.
That'd be a sensible decision.
i'm glad Ashley Cole is finally get close to the level of admiration he deserves
the man is an absolute legend, easily England's greatest ever left-back, yes he's made some mistakes in his private life but haven't we all?
-
it's kind of ridiculous how jack wilshere is pretty much the only english attacking midfielder
germany must have about 15 players who could've played there for england today (if they werent german).
ashley young and t-clevz can play there
As many of Kia Joorabchian's stable of players
as Hughes can get funds for to Stoke.
I am opposed to this one giant thread nonsense.
Can we go back to daily's please.
So the standard thing to do when you're appointed new manager somewhere
is to cherry pick a few players from your previous club. Which is nice for Mark Hughes since he a. signed about 100 players in the past year and b. they're ALL available to buy.
Will be pretty telling if he fails to be remotely interested in any of them.
enjoyed dixon and southgate calling the players sloppy and lazy.
and keane saying, 'it doesnt matter it's only a freindly'.
Perez wants Bale now.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/may/30/gareth-bale-real-madrid-florentino-perez
I like how it's the arsenal lads who are following this story most closely
you'd better believe it.
bale's agent
'If Florentino [Pérez, the Real president] is interested in Gareth Bale, it would be an honour and we'd listen," Barnett said. "But his contract is with Tottenham. We aren't free to talk with anybody at the moment, that's the point we're at.
I can understand a lot of teams are interested in him. He's a great player but he has a contract with Tottenham. I don't know if there has been a bid [from Real]. What I do know is that the player has three years left on his contract.'
have you ever heard anyone contradict themselves so many times in about 3 sentences? football can fuck off sometimes.
it's just the footie version of Hook's *don't try and stop me smee try and stop me*
you posted the other day
Ah, the Reverse Harry Manoeuvre
who would have thought doing the opposite thing to Harry would still leave you looking like a cunt
So Chompy is agitating for a move then.
Ray Houghton thinks he owes Liverpool Football Club FC One! More! Year! Personally I don't want to be deprived of ten matches' worth of footage of him seething in the directors' box.
Hasn't he worked the deficit down a bit in the tail end of the season?
Maybe if his big move doesn't hove into view by pre-season he'll just start biting people at random.
as much as he was probably responsible for 10-15 points last season
himself, I honestly think liverpool would be in a better position without him, without even mentioning the problems he might bring to the dressing room / missing 20% of each season.
£40mil for Suarez + Carroll money + maybe £10-£15m ish from selling some dead wood / - not to mention Liverpool are a club that look relatively happy to be in the minus in terms of net spend figures
that's a side that looked perfectly capable and decent without suarez at the end of the season + £80m ish (!) reinvested well as it was with sturridge and countinho in january.
I largely agree
Although I wonder about their ability to attract top, top (top) players if Suarez leaves. If they want to be up near the top of the league they need him to stay and more players like him to come in, not more Fabio Borini types.
There's a good reason a player as good as Suarez went to Liverpool
and not somewhere, with all respect, he'd challenge for top honours. He's not improved at Liverpool, or somehow proven himself more than he had at Ajax. His ability was patently clear there. he was just too much of a liability.
I don't think Liverpool's stock has changed that much since he signed. Any top player they can get is going to be flawed somehow.
There's got to be some way of changing a team's stock besides Hot Cash Injection though, right?
Bit depressing otherwise.
Swansea have done it.
Yeah
but Suarez is one of the world's best footballers- if he wasn't such a belm, only clubs with the very highest stock (or biggest wallets) could get him.
Liverpool could attract plenty of good players, but no way on Earth could they get anything even approaching like-for-like, no matter how much money they got for Suarez.
I agree with you unfortunately.
But why's it any different to the situation when we sold Torres?
Nobody predicted Suarez could replace Torres. Ok he was widely courted by the English clubs before we got him but no-one knew he was THAT good.
When Liverpool signed Suarez we were nowhere, we'd just avoided administration, just lost Torres, Mascherano shortly before, had to sack a shit no-mark manager, changed owners. It looked a lot bleaker back then than it does now.
There's where we slightly disagree then.
I think a lot of scouts and managers knew how good he was but were put off for non-football reasons. It's one thing to sign a player without knowing they'll be (let's say) challenging or for someone you already have to become problematic (not naming any John Terrys), and another to take a risk on someone you know will cause problems. It sounds like I'm baiting you, but I think the Liverpool of, say, 5 years ago would have steered well clear of him because brilliant players without severe side issues would have been attainable.
I don't think for a second that selling Suarez would be the end, just that Liverpool are not currently able to attract players of Suarez's ability unless they're also carrying a bit of unattractive baggage.
Do Liverpool need quality or depth more? Suarez couldn't be replaced like-for-like, but perhaps selling him could fund a general improvement throughout the team and squad.
Vickery was making the exact same point when they signed him.
He's world class but eventually he'll do something and let you down. As it happens he's done two of those things.
problem would be the position they badly need to strengthen is Suarez's.
If they kept him, sourced a decent centre back and a winger, they wouldn't have any worse of a squad than Arsenal do.
Hmm.
Fair point. I still think people would put up with the baggage to get a player that good. He's good enough to take the risk, and on balance, I would definitely rather keep him and expect to lose him to the odd ban here and there, than replace him with a better-behaved vastly inferior player or two.
I don't watch much Liverpool,
but I do get the impression you're better off keeping him and suffering the consequences. You could potentially get loads of money for him, but money in the bank or money spent on lesser (if still good players) isn't necessarily something to aspire to. Particularly if you're looking to re-establish yourself, like Liverpool are.
totally agree
Suarez can cunt off
I'm resigned to him going.
He's already flip-flopped on it twice in two days. Tells the Spanish speaking media he wants to go to Spain then tells the English media he wants to stay in England. That's commitment!
I'd rather him leave now and give us chance to replace him sooner than drag it out over July.
No bad blood though. He kept his end of the bargain and got us loads of goals. Will probably earn us a wedge when he goes. Good luck to him (not really. I hope he breaks his leg and is out for the first season, then gets fat like Maradona).
de bruyne's going on loan to leverkusen? that's rubbish
looked like he ran the show against USA last night. this is a great cross http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ih6yrmrNwmo#t=92s
remember when people were saying oxlade-chamberlain was a world-class prospect
he's lost something this season.
So England fans.
How we feeling about Roy so far, with an emphasis on tactics?
Probably best that I don't comment as I'm blinded by red bias, but I'm glad we've got a couple more quotes to add to his already-hilarious list. After drawing 1-1 at home to IRELAND:
"I can't be disappointed with the way we tried to win," said Hodgson."
"I knew it would be a tough test and it was even tougher than I could have imagined."
BEST BIT
"There's been far too much discussion about systems. I was asked to do programme notes for Uefa about the systems Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund had brought to European football, but Borussia played 4-4-2 in the same way we played 4-4-2."
how can you be so bitter about someone who took you from mid table to slightly lower mid table?
forget who i support for a second.
Now cast your mind back to last night, and think about this quote:
"Borussia played 4-4-2 in the same way we played 4-4-2."
Once you've stopped laughing, then you can put your head back in the sand and pretend he's a great manager, and that anyone who dislikes him is either a Harry Redknapp obsessive or a bitter scouser.
Yeah that's not the brightest thing he's ever said
and I don't think he's some sort of world great, but England have mostly looked, well, just about alright under him, which is better than they were the majority of the time under Capello.
Other than Redknapp, who would've been even worse, what other candidates were there, bearing in mind that the FA wanted an English manager? Sam Allardyce?
Roy's fine.
-
but England have mostly looked, well, just about alright under him, which is better than they were the majority of the time under Capello.
[citation needed]
the world cup
yep thats the majority of the time
who would you prefer as manager?
which Englishman?
I'm not slagging him off.
Yeah we looked quite food for the majority of Capello's rein.
Apart from playing Heskey really. Rooney, Gerrard and Walcott all looked good and he actually recognised you need someone covering the back four and not just Lamps and Stevie G bombing forward. He's an infinitely more talented manager than Hodgson as proven by his track record.
It's only in the immediate run up to and when we got to the World Cup that shit fell apart.
Obviously I meant reign.
We looked great during Capello's reign in every qualifier
absolutely appalling in actual competitions.
not that i'm defending hodgson or anything
didn't even watch yesterday's game. i'm the most fairweather england fan ever
our 'arry would sort 'em out!!1!!
Hodgson is what he's always been which is a bit mediocre.
He's not as bad as some of the Scousers claim but he's a fucking mile short of being of the ability to marshal the dross in the England squad into a good side.
i like how he leaps out of his seat excitedly when England score
then suddenly realises he's probably being filmed and reaches for his hair like, "oh, shit, must not show enthusiasm"
Christ on a bike, it was a post season international friendly
How arsed do you think they were? How any of us are?
For what it's worse I honestly didn't think England played that badly last night, and think if they'd played with a bit more intensity and had the better options up front that Carroll/Welbeck/Sturridge may have provided, they would have won. There were some really decent passages of build up play and Ireland defended well.
He's been in charge for long enough for you to make an honest assessment of his time now though.
It's probably gonna be difficult for a lot of people who nailed their colours to the mast early doors on Hodgson, to admit that he's anything other than really good. But seriously, in 12 months time it's not gonna hold much water.
My honest assessment is
regardless of who England have in charge they have about a 1 in 10 chance of reaching an international semi-final, so I'd rather have someone in with a shred of dignity who pisses off Liverpool fans, rather than Harry Redknapp.
Agree the squad is just so absolutely appalling that
it'd genuinely take someone brillaint to get the best out of them. Which Roy definitely isn't. Hopefully over the next ten years we'll learn our lessons and start focusing on the coaching.
How do you get
"absolutely appalling" from "1 in 10 chance of a semi final". I agree England aren't great but the only thing that annoys me more than fans who think we should be winning the World Cup are one's who say there's no talent their at all. I'd say we're about 8-10th in the world in terms of talent. Not bad going.
To be honest, I do think this we're at our weakest for some time - probably since around 1999/2000.
But yeah - we're definitely not terrible in the grand scheme of things. I'd say maybe 8th-15th but still, not bad going.
I agree that we are not as strong as in recent times
And beyond Spain, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Italy it's difficult to really assess the next strongest teams (though even those giants have issues, Brazil particularly). I just think sometimes the frustration that England have more in common with Croatia, Uruguay, France, Russia etc. these days comes out in fans saying were bloody awful or something. We're not, every world Cup some outside team gets to the Semis, England could be that one.
Italy aren't in that top bracket of teams
why are you talking about dignity? and please could you explain what dignity Hodgson has over other people, and why on earth that has anything to do with his ability as a manger?
Love this stock opinion that Roy is a really nice great guy who is only disliked by morons who either love Redknapp (the press) or are Liverpool fans.
But now it's turning from "He's the best guy for the job and I'm interested to see what he can do" to "Well the squad's shit anyway. No manager in the world could do anything with them."
because he does seem like a nice guy.
The inference that you're incredibly bitter about wot e did to your beloved club (leaving aside he did a similar job with a lot less money than the man who replaced him) arises from the fact you've eagerly got the knives out for him after a mediocre performance in a completely pointless friendly.
"He's the best guy for the job" and "The squad is shit" are not mutually exclusive statements. Hodgson has made his name as a man who can organise and get the most out of a group of fairly mediocre players, and for that reason I think he's a better shout than anyone else who would possibly be interested in the position.
Personally
I'd much prefer Redknapp to be England manager. Remember all those blame-defecting interviews during which he absolutely cunted off all bar three of QPR's players? Who wouldn't want to watch that happen in an England context?
It's way too early to make any kind of assessment.
Capello and Eriksson were praised for their record in qualifying whilst Ramsey, Robson and Venables were all criticised by the press shortly before performing well in major tournaments. Everyone forgets now but even McClaren started his reign with a series of convincing wins before it all turned to shit.
Ultimately England managers are going to be judged on major tournaments and nothing else. Hodgson did an acceptable but unremarkable job at the Euros. If he qualifies for the World Cup and we get to a quarter-final or better he's done well (though I agree with Parsefone that a semi-final appearance would be remarkable whoever was in charge) whereas if we don't qualify or go out in the group stages he's done terribly. But before then, it's way too early to judge.
Best heed your own advice and not comment on him
Even if you have a point your tone is so bitter that who can blame us for not taking you seriously?
I was tricked into commenting on him by you lot.
It's all a rouse.
No but I just wanted to hear opinions on his time in charge so far, to see if anyone had anything nice to say about him. Looks like all you've got is:
- I'm blinded by bitterness
- Liverpool fans are idiots
- Redknapp is shit
- England's squad is shit anyway, so it doesn't matter who's in charge
Which is kind of what I expected tbf.
Never mind
Perhaps I'm only speaking for myself but I'm too apathetic about England to care about tepid friendliest. If it were a qualifying match, I'd probably be more involved.
you forgot
- people who can't take him seriously anymore because of that touchline photo of him and Sammy Lee
I feel pretty bad for Uncle Woy
From what I've seen of his England side, he's doing pretty much what you'd expect; a 6/10 kind of job with a 6/10 kind of squad. Trouble is he also looks like he's in danger of being crushed by all the bullshit that goes with the job like the press having a 3 day tizzy over who's captain in a friendly, players pulling out of squads at the last minute and assorted Ferdinand/Terry nonsense when all he wants to do is be left alone to coach the players.
Funny as it was seeing him miss out, I always felt like Redknapp was better suited to the job, in much the same way as Dalglish was at Liverpool. Neither of them are any better at managing a team than Hodgson and the results would be much the same, but all the off pitch stuff comes a lot easier when you have the press and the fans onside.
Can't argue with you there tbh
apart from the Dalglish comparison. Even in his worst season with us he won us a cup. Which is more than Roy Hodgson's ever won in any country of note.
Adrian Mutu wants to adopt the baby flushed down the toilet in China
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/may/30/adrian-mutu-adopt-baby-sewage-pipe
Mutu said: "I couldn't figure out how to carry on living, how to eat my breakfast when I saw this story on TV. He's a special child. When I saw the baby I said 'I must adopt him, he has been sent to me by God.'.
Good luck with the adoption request Adrian
He is off the drugs now isn't he?
this is pretty great
hope he gets the legal clearance he needs to go through with it.
always kinda liked mutu and this makes me like him more.
I like Mutu too
He's got a slightly mad streak that isn't milked by or for the press too much (unlike Balotelli, Cassano, Ibra etc.)
Can anyone say coke mule? Because Mutu certainly can.
Rooney couldn't be fucked last night even more than usual
Which is a real achievement
the only bit I saw of him was him trying a half-hearted little lob from 18yards that went well wide
then he just sighed and (I assume) snuck off early
?
he put in more effort than walcott or carrick at the very least. thought he got about quite a lot without having much/any of an end product, got back defending quite a few times and drove a few attacks forward. think you were watching his reputation.
there's a bit here where van persie gets tackled and he looks rubbish

4-1 to Denmark
some of their attacking play, and the way they created chances, was amazing. Just imagining some of those players (Højbjerg, Zohore, Yussuf Poulsen, Andersen) alongside first team players like Eriksen and Fischer in a couple of years. Could destroy the world.
i'll bet you they don't.
You say that
yet you know absolutely nothing about those players. That reflects interestingly on you as a person.
give me a similar example of this happening in world football in the past 40-50 years
a country who are perennial group stage knockouts going on to dominate world football. presuming we aren't talking about fluking a single tournament, but having a sustained period of success.
i don't know much about these players no, but are they really better than young players that germany, brazil and spain for a start are producing or have around at the moment?

Eriksen is from my home town. He is a brilliant player. I hope to see him at Munich, Dortmund, Manchester, or even Barcelona next year, or at the very least in the next two years.
If i am trying to be honest, i don't think we will win the World Cup in 2014. We have some good footballers, but we are still a long distance behind Spain, Brazil, Argentina and Germany, and a little behind Holland, Italy, France, Croatia, Portugal, even Belgium and England. We are maybe one of the top fifteen teams in the world, but not #1, yet.

"I am an experienced Premier League manager and, with all the changes that have been going on, there aren't many with as much experience as me," the former Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham and QPR manager said. "At two of my last three clubs the ownership changed shortly after I arrived and I don't want to go through that process again, it's not easy.
"So one of the first questions I asked of the Coates family at Stoke was: 'Are you going to stick around?' They said yes and that's a real attraction for me."
It was a tough interview, but Stoke managed to do just enough to impress him.
I've read a couple of articles with him in the last few days
He's an unbelievable cunt. Doesn't seem unbowed in the slightest by what happened at QPR.
He actually claimed part of the reason he failed so badly is because QPR had had 8 managers in the same number of years. What on earth has that got to do with failing to win any of your first 17 games?
related to this
have Stoke sold even a single player to another PL club in the time Pulis has been there? I can't think of any. That would be pretty weird - half a decade without anyone wanting anyone you have
Or Stoke being the kind of place you never want to leave perhaps.
*never can leave
The man is a shut cunt of the highest degree.
Real Madrid's 13/14 season is set to have the worst shot conversion ratio in footballing history
As Ronaldo and Suarez try to wildly out-do each other at not scoring
Ronaldo - Well over a goal a game at Real Madrid
Suarez - Over a goal every other game for his entire career
What a weird thing to say.
Suarez had the highest number of shots off target this season
i think thats what hes aiming at. I imagine Ronaldo was the same in Spain.
Exactly what I meant
Scoring lots =/= converting lots of opportunties
What about Bale, eh?
He's not going there until next Summer
;)
so Suarez has announced he's going to leave then
Kind of inevitable, though I'd imagine it'll still drag on for most of the summer
Not necessarily the worst thing for Liverpool tbf, he's an incredible player, but even with him there that squad needs a lot of work to make them competetive, £35m+ will certainly help with that. Also got the impression that Bodgers was loathe to build a side round one player, kind of goes against what he seems to believe in, but Suarez was so good he had no other option

could be the most interesting opening to a season in donkey's, with so many managers and key players departing from the top 6 or 7 sides
really want them both to go to real madrid
chuck joey barton in there. Maybe el hadj diouf too.
proper supervillain club
Xabi Alonso would have to leave
probably Kaka too
Not sure about that
It's interesting atm with all the likely changes in the top 3 of last year. If Spurs and Liverpool were to make ground on them though you feel they have to both strenghten and keep hold of their best players.
I don't give a tinker's cuss about that
I just want -=CHAOS=-
It won't be chaos though
It'll be the same top 3
We're about to sign 16 year old ex-villa wonderkid Dan Crowley
he absolutely destroyed our u18s when they beat us 6-1, and was i think the main guy in villa's nextgen-winning side.
Next Jack Wilshere YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST.
Is he already ex-villa?
As in he no longer has a contract with them? Why would that be...seems a bit suspicious?
dunno, maybe he knew that big teams would come in for him so didn't wanna stay
not gonna pretend youth football is really murky and stuff though.
On that note, we're also close to signing (stealing) very-highly-rated centre back Julio Plezeguelo Selva from barcelona.
isn't*
Agreed, something deeply fishy going on here.
'Dan Crowley' doesn't sound even remotely like a French-African name ...
can't even imagine a guy called Dan Crowley playing for Arsenal
even the English lads have Wodehousian names like Theodore Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Having just looked him up
I'm revelling in the fact his full name is Alexander Mark David Oxlade-Chamberlain and comes from Hampshire
Really hope he becomes huge
and the fans start singing Mr Crowley at him.

Phil Jones: England's number 7. Pretty much sums it up.
To be honest
he's doing no worse a job of playing midfield than Carrick and Milner have been.
Yeah that's not a dig at how he's been playing, more just the significance of a number 7

Still great.

England didn't play well...but I enjoy watching them now because there's more likeable people in the team. Two 8/10 goals too.
If there's any truth in Real willing to pay £85 million for Bale...
I change my mind about it weakening Spurs. Levy should take the money and run. You can get 3 or 4 top quality players for that. However...the bid would have to be confirmed to be believed...and Levy seems to be readying a "not for sale at any price" statement, the daft idiot.
I'm going to wait to see what the Monaco chairman has to say about it first personally.
Dunno, if Bale's doesn't try to force his way out then it makes sense to keep him, regardless of the bid
If he stays and Spurs bring in a couple of good players then they stand a decent chance of making the top 4 next season. Assuming Bale doesn't turn to shit over the summer, they'll still be able to get loads of money for him in 12 months time and being able to offer Champion's League football would mean they could the fee on better players.
^ dunno if selling your best player immediately after missing out on CL qualification
is the best way to court new signings, tbh.
He's right though, we shouldn't believe an uncomfirmed rumour until someone confirms it.

Graham Hunter via Twitter
'I believe Jesus Navas deal to #City now fully agreed at €23m + €4m variables. Good luck catching him next season'
Has his crippling anxeity been addressed to the point of a move to Manchester then?
That's a big surprise if so, I know he's played at foreign tournaments etc successfully recently and that Sevilla needed to sell but that's a huge upheaval even for someone without his issues. Massive credit to him for getting over it if so.
I hadn't thought of that
Would definitely be a massive step if so, but I've not read anything to suggest he has conquered them (I've not seen his away stats for Club or Country this season).
Hunter doesn't strike me as a bullshitter though - does he have previous?
There's been a few articles saying that he has got over it.
He's been itching for the move seemingly so you'd hope he knew what he was getting himself in for.
I'm conflicted because he's exactly what we need but he's also mental.
Not even the entertaining Balo kind of mental, the fly home mid way through a season because Manchester is a rainy shit hole mental.
Tevez mental then.
Confirmation that Theo Walcott couldn't trap a bag of cement
people always say that
but I reckon it'd be devilishly hard to trap a bag of cement if someone flung one at you

Which line of Mourinho bants will you be adopting?
Chelsea are now absolutely nailed on to win the league and anything less than a 112 points haul will be a failure of such embarrassing proportions that the club will be forced to fling itself into the sea in its entirety next May

yessss
indifferent, composed DK is dead - giddy, siege mentality DK is in. It's only been 3 minutes as well

It will all end in tears, probably in November, but I'm going to milk the appointment, first press conference and first home game for all they're worth and then some. This is a big day for me.
hope he finds a niche
now that Allardyce has made taken over the urbane silver fox role he used to hold
Don't know how to break this to you, but Real Madrid are taking applications now ...
DanielKelly seems needlessly defensive about this whole thing
he's a bit old hat now isn't he?
He hasn't got the histronics of Di Canio, hasn't got the charm of Klopp, Rodgers has sewn up the management quotes market and Laudrup has got the suave and sophistication down.
Suppose he could wear that coat again.
Mourinho's lost it and is gonna alienate half his squad within a year and a half and not win that much
Laughing HARD when his very first home game ends in defeat.
(Hopefully)
also
this must surely auger the Ancelotti to Real, Zlatan to Chelsea move that I predicted a while back
right?
Ancelotti to Madrid has been a goer for a while, even if PSG say otherwise.
Pretty rare for a manager to not leave a club when they want to, pretty rare for Real to not get who they want in to manage.
how do you feel about having Zlatan as your target man this season?
I've just had this idea that no-one else has talked about
Zlatan + Lukaku up front, managed by Mourinho. Reckon it could be devastating
wow
that's amazing
hadn't thought of that
reckon you could be onto something
Lukaku wants to leave apparently.
wants to leave Chelsea?
how does that work? he wants a permanent move to WBA?
Replacing Lewandowski at Dortmund innit
obviously this is TalkSport and probably shouldn't be taken seriously
but: http://www.talksport.co.uk/sports-news/football/premier-league/130530/exclusive-romelu-lukaku-admits-he-will-leave-chelsea-unless-he-guarantee-1985
(the same story's elsewhere on the internet, as well).
doesn't seem like he wants to leave at all
seems like an appeal to the new manager for a 1st team place
He deserves one, that's for sure.
I hope he stays, but I wouldn't be surprised if he goes elsewhere just to get first-team football, especially if we sign Zlatan and neither Torres nor Ba leaves (which I can't see them doing).
Do you think the web editor who pressed 'publish' instead of 'save as draft'
was fired?
that's 2 defeats practically nailed on for next season.
At least we'll be able to scamper back to our football purist's high ground now
Chelsea playing lovely attacking football was becoming unsettling, the defeats were easier to take when their only tactic was to boot the ball towards Senderos and send Drogba after him
This is gonna turn out like Shearer/Keegan/Dalglish
Can't wait
Also lets just repeat he's a bellend
i hope he signs pepe
I can't even process a Chelsea side with Pepe in
Think Pepe might have burned his bridges with Jose after he took Casillas' side
Fairly damning verbal slapdown from Mourinho a couple of weeks ago in the Spanish press.
Rooney to Chelsea makes some sense with Mourinho there, though my judgement might be clouded by my desperation to keep him away from Arsenal.
Why desperation to keep him away from Arsenal?
Because he's a twat in and of itself? Fair enough if so but if it's for footballing reasons then you're nuts.
Surely nobody thinks there's actually any truth whatsoever in the Rooney to Arsenal rumours?
Not a shred personally
No, I mean literally nobody.
Surely?
no chance, for the same dan crowley reasons:
his name's Wayne and he looks like he has to shave his dumb potato face more than once a month
Think Rooney likely peaked
about 3 or 4 years ago, and will only bring diminishing returns to teams that would want to sign him now. Still a talented player, but for the money you'd have to spend in transfer and wages and all the shite you have to put up with him being a shitcunt, he's not worth the gamble.
It's all pointless as Arsenal would never spend that money. Wenger basically said he was a good player who most teams would like when asked about him. Complete non story.
To sum up: Gervinho>>>>>>>>>>>>Rooney
LOL
Adebayo Akinfenwa > Gervinho
Nah, no way
Diminishing returns this season because of less football and still chalked up 10+ goals and assists, only 3 (I think) other players achieved that in the league. He's probably approaching his peak, no way his best days are behing him (unless he somehow gets even more prickish).
He'd improve Arsenal a massive amount in the extremely unlikely event that they coughed up big money for him.
Of course he is better
than any of the options Arsenal currently have - no doubt about that, but what would Rooney likely cost? £30 million? £200k a week (and that would be a pay cut). For that money I don't think he would provide a good enough return, as I don't think he was the same player he was a few years ago. Should have done a straight swap for Van Persie.
He'd be your top-scorer for the length of his contract, would pretty much guarantee you don't have this will we/won't we top-4 type season again
Outside chance of propelling you to a title challenge. That is the kind of money that (unfortunately) you have to be prepared to stump up for that kind of return.
Say what you will about his attitude (and physique) but the guy loves playing football and I think he'll have a long career personally.
£30 million to finish fourth?
We'll be fine with Giroud and Gervinho mate.
Rooney would be Arsenal's best player by a fucking country mile.
Don't think that's being argued
As I was saying above - for the outlay you would have to provide, I'd be surprised if you got a decent return on your investment, for the reason benni more eloquently explained below.
Arsenal would not attract anyone else of the calibre of Rooney.
He'd be the best thing in terms of ability and attitude that you could spunk any of that sweet Nazi kit money on.
Rooney's only 27
if they signed him and a quality defensive midfielder for next season, Arsenal may be able to put together a challenge for the title next season, it won't happen though as Manchester United aren't daft enough (unlike Arsenal) to sell their best players to domestic rivals.
It'd be a stretch for Arsenal to be called United's rivals anymore tvh
they aren't any more
but Rooney would improve them massively and possibly with a few other astute signings from Wenger could help them become United's rivals again
11/12 was one of rooneys best season football wise
His twattery is a pretty big part of it, yeah
But I also think his head's not right and that he's peaked physically and could be done by 31.
None of which is to say that he isn't a very good player, because he obviously is, but for the amount of (PUMA!!) money it would take I think Wazaldinho represents a massive risk.
Basically, if he wasn't a terrible bloke I'd still not be that keen.
^^ my post, succinctly done
Rooney is an odd one.
I think it's utterly bizarre that so many don't at all rate him. He's clearly a magnificent footballer whose only crime in those terms is to be not quite as good as the by definition small group very, very best footballers.
Would you have him at Chelsea?
In purely playing terms I'd have him at City in a heart beat.
I think so, yeah.
There's admittedly an issue with his condition. He seems to be a tad unfortunate in that he piles on the pounds after just a few seconds of inactivity (which is why I think some of the stick he's got over his most recent transfer request is harsh. You can see why he wants/needs to play every week, his physique seems to go to shit otherwise), and then there's the fact that he's been playing virtually every weekend since he was 16- there are top players four or five years older than him who have played far fewer career games, and that will take its toll eventually. He'd be a risky investment for those reasons.
But if you can afford risky investments, he's potential benefits of having him in your side are huge. Chelsea, by and large, can afford expensive and risky punts.
Fair enough
Arsenal, by and large, cannot afford anymore risky punts. And for that reason, ahm oot.
Don't know why you're being so unreasonable about this, mate
JUST SIGN ROONEY FFS
UNLEASH THE PUMA WARCHEST
^this
There's also the truly horrifying prospect of us paying United £30m for Wazmatazz, only for them to go straight out and use it to buy Fabregas, in which case I'd probably have to kill myself.
For me
I admire him as a player, but after making two transfer requests in three years he can do one as far as I'm concerned.
I mean: "you're not signing enough good players, I want to leave". "No Wayne, stick around, we'll sign some better players". Nek minute RvP. "I want to leave, I'm not in the team all the time". "You asked us to sign better players son".
Yea, from a Utd point of view I want him to fuck the fuck off
That has little to do with his ability though, he's a fantastic player who has been magnificent on the pitch for us for the most part.
Martinez to Everton is a thing then
maaaaaaaaaaaaaan.
Rebuild.
This deserves to be in its own post and not an ignored reply upthread.
http://abload.de/img/moureturrrrrnedj4n.gif
seriously best thing
apparently Man Utd have signed Garay
with Rio having his testimonial this August maybe he is leaving for a last paycheck or retiring.
How effectively he is going to be able to hoof the ball to a target man?
?
Ooooh, another central defender!
Who do you reckon is off?
Vidic
Reckon it'd be a good signing personally. It'd be naive to suggest that United didn't have a few defensive issues last season
and it'd be harsh to pin them on Rafael, De Gea or Evra.
It seems fairly certain to me that Moyes will sign a centre mid anyway. Betting on Strootman was suspended yesterday, and I imagine Fellaini is there for the taking if United want him. Doubt he will be afforded any statement signings, but alongside one of those, Garay should help ensure we don't slip behind every game for half the season.
He's signed a new contract?
RKC Waalwijk have splashed the cash on up-and-comer Dennis Rommedahl.
How much is Andreas Christensen's development going to be affected with Mourinho now being back in charge of Chelsea?
