The Football Thread for a Friday
Rangers NewCo get away with what can only be described as a slap on the wrist for more than a decade of cheating. I was looking forward to yet another soulful McCoist vs. the World interview personally.
Rust sets in at Upton Park. Something season something something.
Meppen-Walter gets 16 months for killing two people. Good looking prospect, silly boy.
Never mind though, it's the weekend soon! Hurray!

Although I generally dislike working nights...
At least it gets me out of sitting in the cold, being bored stiff by another dire Wolves performance tonight.
What has actually happened there?
I know your lot were bad but not *that* bad, you seem on a firm financial footing and last I checked Solbakken seemed to have made some decent signings. Had you down as the most likely to bounce back up out of the three that went down last year, certainly not the one most likely to get consecutive relegations.
Shit players got us relegated last season
The best of a shit bunch went elsewhere in the summer.
I still reckon Solbakken was a decent manager, but the bunch of clowns on the pitch were responsible for his demise.
We now have a clown of a manager to complement the idiots on the pitch.
Since Saunders has come in, we've not won a game and have for the majority played appallingly, however in every single one of his post-game interviews he reckons we did well and should've won. What a prick.
When I think back to the first half at home to Spurs last season
our demise is remarkable.
Fourth game of the season, we were unbeaten, had won two and appeared to be competing with a decent Spurs side. I remember thinking we actually looked like a half-decent top flight side. Fletcher, O'Hara, Doyle and Kightly were all looking handy.
In the second half, we seemed to collapse and got beaten 0-2. From that day one, we've been on a non-stop downward trajectory and we're now in a position where I'm looking for Peterborough's results and hoping they lose.
I still don't know why Saunders was appointed, but given that the backroom staff that were in place when Solbaken was sacked had all worked with him, I suspect he was always lined up as a Plan B if things didn't work out with Solbaken.
We're back to being a laughing stock and we've only ourselves to blame.
I miss not being shit.
Here's what happened:
- Chairman decides that the West Brom/Swansea model is the way to go and wants a full change of the club, backroom and front, in order to make Wolves more competitive in the long-term with the changes in football (ie, pass-and-move over McCarthy's hoofball). A Director of Football was promoted from within as well.
- Gets in Solbakken, who is known for a very unique continental style that saw Copenhagen's best CL performance ever. His time at Cologne can be put down to the general disorder at that club.
- Start extremely well. New players (Sako, Doumbia, Peszko, Sigurdarson) look a step above the rest of the division. Two more players arrive injured - Boukari and Margreitter - but also are well-rated in scouting reports.
- Just before the October international break, Boukari is injured just as he comes back, and then Pezko is injured too. Both first choice wingers injured. Then Sigurdarson picks up some knocks, and Doumbia (who arrived without a preseason) clearly suffers exhaustion and has to be shipped off to France for a few weeks to recuperate. Hasn't looked the same player since.
- Further injuries reduce the squad for most of November and December to a first eleven that picks itself, with benches of kids. Whether some of those (Davis, Forde) are ready regardless is debatable, but it's clear that Solbakken stick with a passing style even with players from the McCarthy days that have poor off-the-ball movement and are uncomfortable passing the ball quickly as he wants. Results deteriorate rapidly.
- Culminates in four games over the New Year where we concede loads, get one shot on target, and lose to Luton in the Cup. Solbakken is sacked. I'd say it's fair to say the fans were split on his dismissal but the general mood was turning against him. People were reminded of the dark Hoddle days. It's also worth saying that by this point it was clear some of the key players under McCarthy were almost publicly resistant to the changes Solbakken was making
- Saunders comes in, recommended (so I've heard) by his close friends Ian Rush and Graeme Sounness. Came with a reputation for honest, British football at Doncaster, and of having knowledge of how to inspire players in a rut. The general mood at the club was that the players were good enough, they just weren't inspired by Solbakken's cold professorial style.
- Saunders, as expected, has been an absolute train wreck. Clearly out of his depth. Team selections and formations change from match to match regardless of previous performances, with key players under Solbakken (like Peszko) frozen out for no discernable reason. The players injured under Solbakken, plus long-time injured and key player O'Hara, have come back, giving Saunders lots of flexibility, but he doesn't have any idea what's he doing. Stephen Hunt came back from months out injured, straight into a match at left-back, where he's never played before. We went 1-0 up against Barnsley at ten minutes then were switched to a defensive setup to try and see the game out. The players look even more dejected.
- We've brought in Gorkss from Reading at CB, and Robinson from Liverpool at LB, which are good moves, but apart from that it's very bleak.
- Solbakken was on TV last night being interviewed (http://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/article/360/8530650/video-stale-solbakken-interview) and was very accurate in his observations that the chairman doesn't know what he wants. The club has a good financial situation but we're now at a point where that's been threatened by the footballing side of things, which should never have happened. Saunders took over when we were as far from the playoffs as we were from relegation and all he needed was a point a game to survive. He's not won a single game.
tl;dr It's a bit like a Lidl version of the AVB-at-Chelsea situation when Solbakken was there, followed by a really, really clueless appointment afterwards.
So, in summary...
...do you think that if Solbakken was stuck with, things might've improved in the long run? Or was his situation made completely untenable seeing as he didn't have the dressing room from day 1 and needed to be moved on.
Strange goings on.
Needed to get rid of the rest of the shit left over from before he came in
And get his own players in, I suspect. While he was in charge I said it a few times, that you could see what the idea was, but we didn't have the players to carry it out like.
But we seem to be hoarding players at the moment, rather than getting rid of those we don't need - We've got 40-something professionals on our books they were saying on the radio the other night.
Seems like a strange appointment then
for a Chairman to get someone in to overhaul the squad, the methods and the results and then not give them the time to do it. Poor sod.
Hence my comparison to AVB at Chelsea.
But, y'know, a pathetically small-time version of it.
Yep.
Although I don't like the cut of AVB's jib, for contrast.
Think even if he does nothing else at Spurs he's already vindicated himself for the Chelsea dismissal. He's getting decent results, getting the players to play his style of football and he is very popular with both the players (from what I've heard) and the fans. Fair play to him.
That number's bollocks though.
It includes the kids in the reserves who are on small, first-time professional contracts. When you look at the first team we have something like 26 players, of which a good half dozen aren't having their contracts renewed this summer. The average wage is probably too high across the first team, not the number of players.
Yeah, I assumed there would be some degree of wrongness to it
As it was being bandied about on a radio phone-in
I do.
He was almost sacked in his first season at Copenhagen because the football was dire and results mediocre, but the chairman there stuck with him and they won the next five seasons in a row. It's ridiculous to expect a complete overhaul of the squad and the playing style with just one transfer window, while playing with a squad that's mostly not his.
When Saunders took over relegation wasn't at all a possibility - even with Solbakken's bad run we still won four games in December, and we were pretty solidly mid-table at that point. Finishing there wouldn't have hurt the club too bad financially and we'd have been well-placed to push on for a real promotion push next season with a team ready and drilled in the new style.
The players undermined him and the chairman acted rashly, and now the club's probably going down to League 1 with the second-highest wage bill in the Championship. Self-inflicted and bullshit.
Sounds a reasonable summary.
It was a shame to see Solbakken go. I immensely liked the cut of his jib.
He looked heartbroken when he was sacked. Said he was going to consider whether to stay in management.
I think he'll go on to do great things elsewhere and we'll kick ourselves even more for letting him go.
:(
With reference to point 1, I find that bit unbelievably daft
That they went on about a big change of direction and all that... Then seemingly got fed up of it after a few months, got rid of the footballing bloke and bought a hoofball merchant in.
thanks for that.
Only wish we had a DiS contingent for every crap team to explain exactly why they are crap like we have you guys.

on c4 news when they explained the Rangers thing
It certainly sounded like cheating.
As far as I can ascertain, the only reason that punishment hasn't been more severe
is because of some flaw in the SPL rules that doesn't allow them to retrospectively declare a player ineligible. This seems to mean that you can do whatever the fuck you like as long as you aren't caught at the time.
You hear all the time about teams forfeiting games (usually in cup competitions) due to accidentally filing the wrong paperwork or whatever, but this doesn't seem to apply if you deliberately mislead the governing bodies for a decade in Scotland.
I wonder if it hadn't been Rangers
like say, Aberdeen or someone, if it would have mattered more.
i got me mam the man utd away shirt for mothers day
i'd forgotten how much those shirts cost. ridiculous.
Should have got her one from...
www.soccertriads.com
Great bunch of lads
Hmm...
What's the deal with those? Knock offs?
how do they have such low prices then?
They're obviously fake
But they're really well made. I got this years Juventus away shirt through yesterday and it looks cracking
Sorry, by obviously fake I meant that's why they're cheap
They don't look fake at all in the flesh - you wouldn't know unless you were an expert
Sorry, by obviously fake I just meant the prices
They don't look fake at all in the flesh - they get all the details down to a tee
That's lovely
Concisely put!
I Luv 69
on the back?
Solbakken has said he would "bike it back to Wolverhampton" if he was asked.
His interview last night on Sky Sports is bang on about the problem at Wolves right now: http://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/article/360/8530650/video-stale-solbakken-interview?
God I miss him.
Piers Morgan's weekend predictions video is worth a watch
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21618258
Surely Piers Morgan is never 'worth a watch'
Why do both he and Lawro think QPR are going to beat Saints? Have they seen either side play recently?
because e r arry and e gets results.
Also along with everybody else who haven't watched QPR recently there remains the illusion that a team which has had that amount of money spent on it surely cannot be as bad as they, in actuality, are.
Is it just me, or has Pochettino gained weight and become paler since he arrived? Fair play for embracing the local culture with both arms if so.
Depends
if you want insightful, measured thoughts and comments, don't bother
if you want to laugh at a twat, worth a watch
'la mercinaire' as I like to call him
yeah we got you the first time Piers
alternatively, ignore him and he might fuck off
For some reason I was convinced Spurs-Arsenal would be tomorrow's early game.
Benitez's rant suddenly made a lot more sense when it became clear he'd agreed to film a Football Focus interview first thing Thursday ...
I hope Scotland get independence
so we never have to hear about Scottish fucking football ever again. Hate having to sit through the Scottish results on Final Score/SSN waiting to hear about actual football.
dude re-imagines Major League Baseball teams as Soccer
http://mwillis.com/search/sooc-mlb
some great (Seattle, San Francisco), some terrible (Arizona)
i dont understand?
what is there to understand?
i dont know. thats the problem.
someone has designed soccer shirts for major league baseball teams
just for
oh right. i see now.
great chat
Thanks for posting this
It's really good
Had a poke around the rest of his site
It's brilliant, thanks
A Portugese paper has put together a Highest Paid XI
GK - Casillas (€6m per year)
RB - Lahm (€10m)
CB - Thiago Silva (€9.8m)
CB - Terry (€9.5m)
LB - Cashley (€12.4m)
MF - Silva (€13m)
MF - Yayayayaya (€13m)
MF - Ribery (€10m)
FW - Messi (€15m)
FW - Ronaldo (€10m)
FW - Eto'o (€20m)
Not sure whether it tells us anything (or even if it's accurate), though might explain why Chelsea weren't rushing to sort out new deals for Cole and Lampard.
Also, Casillas has been getting stiffed by Madrid.
They should do one for £££ per game played
Maybe even one that factors in trophies won.
Keepers are really oddly undervalued.
Not that millions of quid a year is to be sniffed out, but just generally.
theres no way ronaldo would allow anyone in the world to get paid more than him
Messi's very recently signed a new contract though hasn't he?
Ronaldo's obviously still negotiating his latest one, judging by the amount of rumours about him re-joining United
I'd guess Rooney would be on more than 10m euro?
I wonder about Tevez and Zlatan as well
they can't be far off
RVP too, he's on comfortably north of £200k per week at United isn't he?
The way they'd laid it out, Eto'o was the only out-and-out striker, which I guess is where those others would fit in were they not obscured by his MEGA BUCKS
RVP was 160k i read. i don't trust any of these figures though.
shaping it into a playable 11
probably keeps a lot of more highly paid players out rather than just 11 forwards and attacking midfielders
Daniel Taylor...
who's usually quite reliable for Man United stuff, claims Rooney's been on over £300k a week at United since he tried going to City, and that van Persie's on an equivelant wage.
wasn't that daniel taylor claim based on what city had told him though?
oh no
No need to get defensive, mate.
Why wouldn't the biggest club in the country have some of the highest-paid players?

Football Weekly Extraaaaaaa sounds wrong this week
some of the music stings are missing
In spite of that
Sid Lowe and Jimbo's back and forths had me breaking rank and laughing out loud on the bus this morning. Cheers guys.
when it finally dawns on sid what is happening :'D
It really was marvellous.
It was the bit where Jimbo started reading and then went `Oh, sorry, this is the Rafa transcript...` that broke me.

Keep Calm and the Harlem Shake in one link?
fucking hell Fulham
Has anyone seen the news from Chelsea this morning?
Rafa was locked out of his office but climbed in through the ventilation system to get to his desk
three weeks ago the 5-a-side team from my old work hadn't won a game since sometime in the middle of last year
two weeks ago we won 11-10
last week we won 18-1
I reckon a cleansheet and one of our goalscorers getting into double figures should be a reasonable target for tonight
dave jones cheating on his wife with a netball player half his age
according to that great bastion of british journalism, the sun
banish him in disgrace.
Maybe your lot will stop playing like Stoke Mk2 then.
is there a 'going down' 'davey jones locker' joke to be made there?
No mention of Giggs signing a new contract extension?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21627465
perhaps he'll keep playing until Fergie retires and then just slips straight into the managers job
*player-manager
Lawro's predictions.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21618258
I think next season i'm going to tot up the points he thinks Liverpool will get over the course of the season. I'm fairly sure we'd finish 17th, just. Can't think of a bigger BANTS-SWERVER tbh.
Piers thinks that Villa will beat City
I wonder if he has based his prediction of every City game this season upon the fact he doesn't like Samir Nasri
If so, has anyone seen him and KiK in the same room together?
QPR 6th on 47 points!
Very pro Arsenal and Everton. Hates Swansea. Seem to recall him really loving Wolves last season.
http://www.myfootballfacts.com/Mark_Lawrensons_Predictions_2012-13.html
Yeah last season and the season before last he loved Wolves.
We'd have been comfortably top half both times, iirc.
he almost got bottom place spot on
liverpool is almost spot on!
hey look norwich aren't bottom anymore
thanks lawro
I like how one of the few times he didn't pick a QPR win,
they beat Chelsea away.
QPR above Spurs. He should be fired just for that
AVB and Bale get the monthly awards...
which means beyond any doubt that bale will have a stinker on sunday, probably getting sent off, and we'll lose by 3 or 4. Cheers.
He's overdue a clattering isn't he?
When they play Stoke?
...if results go our way before then
then he can maybe be rested against Stoke, protect him from a left hook or the like...
Nah.
He does alright against the mid-table nobodies normally.
Spurs should win that one quite comfortably, i'd have thought.
keep up the good work.
i like it when you do it against people i hate.
Anyone for Fantasy MLS?
Starts tomorrow: http://fantasy.mls.com
Martin O'Neill turned 61 today.
What the fuck?
this dave jones thing
has just reminded me of this horror

haha
a piece of me dies every time i see that
mark davies is out for 10 months whaaat
my 5-a-side team have gone from perenial league properer uppers
to The form team at Eldon leisure adding a 9-4 win to last week's 18-1 and a dramatic 11-10 before that.
Marvellous
Away win
A great away win for Palace tonight, the first since November 10th. Apparently Derby were by far the better team, but Speroni was outstanding. Watford dropped two points, so we are only 2 points of 2nd now and have Hull at home on Tuesday.
ach, yknow what, fair play
you probably deserve another crack at the big-time. but one fewer SE LDN derby will be a shame for us. hopefully gillingham will get promoted twice. or once, and we get relegated. actually scratch that
Chris Powell
With Chris Powell now in charge at Charlton, it is totally impossible to dislike you.
aw you melt my heart
let's beat up a millwall fan together
hopefully brighton will go up thru the playoffs and we'll have Premiership Southern Railway AND Wales derbies
If
Palace were to meet Brighton in the play off final at Wembley, the train and tube journey to Wembley would be interesting.
