after writing this I contacted the person who reported it for the BBC. He called me earlier and explained that a number of previous employees had also contacted him with the same information. The only snag for him is that they all wish to remain anonymous, and they need someone to go on record with these claims. Now I don't have an issue with doing this, and personally I feel it would be the right thing to do given the repercussions this open secret has had on temporary workers, but others are telling me it could jeopardise any future employment as well as attract aggro from my former employer. Still tempted to go for it though.
