also how many/which instruments can you play?
also also how many/which instruments have you tried to play?
nobody can prove anything.
I play two instruments all the time. Guitar and ukulele
I play not as often but have: congos, panpipes, harmonica, violin (although this probably the least), keyboard, flute.
Anything i can get my hands on really. Next i want a banjo, trumpet... everything to be honest. I want it ALL.
proving mad to play but ill get a tune out of it some day.
in contrast to all the other fabulous topics i strarted this afternoon, this one could be good.
considering how much i play the guitar, i've never really gelled with the Ukulele.
i'd love to get my hands on a banjo
which was here for the whole time they were going out.
I managed to learn a bit of 'dueling banjos' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tqxzWdKKu8 really want to finish it.
My house is coming down with instruments. Its my life long dream to have a full room, in a grand house, full of lovely instruments i can play.
What i REALLY want is a Hang Drum!! has anyone ever played one or know anyone with one?
pretty impossible to get your hands on. I some day will own one. The most beautiful sounds on earth!
They had to go to Switzerland to get them. They are beautiful things. I can send you a copy of some of the recordings if you like.
Yeah, its crazy the process you have to go through to get them. Pretty costly too. I really hope i get my hands on one some day. Its top of the list of wants.
I messed about with a recording of a tune called 'Mono Desire' - forget the guys name who was playing it http://soundcloud.com/kate-3-1/just-a-dream-x2
chopped it up a little and threw in some samples. It was my first go at making a tune like this.
(he is really specialist and discerning and snobby about music)
paranoid android/knights of cydonia and he thinks that paranoid android passes muster
I used to sit in the dark, at the window in the front room playing really freaky beats on my keyboard when i was a youngster. :D
What age is he?
Its a drum. Big deal, i called it a congo and not a CONGA.
I prefer the piano. Someday, when I'm rich, I'm going to invest in a pre-WWII Steinway grand piano.
and I can play a few things on guitar and piano and flute.
I need to get a new adapter for my drum machine ahhh.
could never do vibrato on a cello/bass and it sounded shit.
Came here to post that. I'll have to go with skin flute instead.
Is that an instrument?
Yeah, I can play it.
also play flugelhorn which is basically the same thing
have tried: trombone (wasn't good), piano (used to be good but haven't played for over a year), guitar
Can't play anything though.
I'd like to play the serpent, but they're impossible to get due to being so old.
it looks crazy, nice deep sound off it
but I don't think anyone has made one since about 1700. It would be so fun to try all the obscure brass instruments, like the alphorn etc. I'll do it one day.
Ive been looking into homemade instruments. Just as a fun project. .
Not sure what ill make yet but it will no doubt be posted up here when/if i do.
it's amazing what you can do just with cutlery, for example. Fork and spoon symphonies (yes I'm bored a lot, OK)! The only thing is actually making it into music, I'd love to create an album of 'household music', though I think Matthew Herbert may have got there first.
id love to have a go at that too. Music is all around us, it's just a matter of opening your ears. Thats what i like about people making music out of the rarest of things.
Lots of really cool videos on youtube of homemade instruments. I got lost for days watching them. Some pretty funny attempts too.
there's the Venezuelan Vegetable Orchestra as well, who play on gourds and stuff like that, and have a chef live onstage who blitzes the instruments into a soup and serves it round after every show.
imagine having to make your instrument before every gig.
I might have a go at a carrot flute first.
the thread has gone mental.
Look at this little guy go, i love this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3qbB4Kq3Y0
and also play the guitar.
i play the drums quite well, and i play guitar, keyboards/piano/synthesiser very badly
i've tried the sitar, various percussion/drum stuff, harmonica, ukelele, and probably a few others
i could get lost in that sound very easily. Added to my list of wants.
(specifically fender jazzmaster guitars) I think that other instruments have it beaten in different areas but I guess they are good all rounders good for chords and melody, maybe not as expressive as something like a violin but enough control of the nuance through little bends and vibrato arms, satisfying tactile feel whilst playing, and all the pedal options that have grown around them
Also play banjo, uke and saw. I want a harmonium
update: I now have a harmonium (bina no.8) and a baritone guitar
instruments i own/play...
guitar (acoustic, electric, 12 string acoustic)
other random percussion
ipad with music apps
other random noise makers(jaw harp etc)
I used to play the trumpet and trombone as a youngster
noise using contact mics, feedback loops, guitar pedals etc
ones owned by mates that Ive played
drum machines etc 303, 808, 909, SR16
probably others ive forgotten. fav to play is the drums or guitar. fav to hear someone else play would be violin or guitar
I mean, I've been playing bass for a good 5 years now (time certainly doesn't matter). I studied Jazz for 2 years (teacher for 2 years as well) and I learn to play all my music with my ears. Doesn't mean I can play anything more or even know that much about bass.
For example, I COULD play double-bass but I wouldn't be very good, nor would I think like a double-bassist, these things take time to master or even become good at.
I've been playing guitar for the last 5 months or so and I've picked up a bit from my bass playing but I certainly wouldn't say I'm 'good' yet, I can play a variety of chords and even a few solos I'm not a guitarist, I'm a bassist - it's my main instrument after all.
I also have a didgeridoo sitting around which I can use badly but I wouldn't bother saying I own it because I can't play it.
I just think you're showing off, that's all.
My favourite instrument is bass and drums by the way.
im the king of the internet.
Just thought you were milking it.
am i showing off because ive bought or had access to a bunch of instruments.. not really.. its not a who has the biggest dick contest is it..?
in answer to your question, i dont have a main instrument, im not very good on any of them. I know 12 year olds who can play each instrument better than me.
But I like playing them all and i like the noises they make.
mbira - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fAAGheYTFA
glass harmonica - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XPfoFZYso8
its real pretty tho
Pink Noize, air drums, the usual innit.
I also like to say harmonica even though ANYONE can play harmonica to the degree I can.
I've also tried playing drums and piano - I know the basics for both but I don't own either and therefore I've never gotten in any way competent at them. I should really buy a synth so I only have to play individual notes. I can do that. Then I could add synth to the list of what I can play.
I also played tin whistle and ocarina back in my school music class days but have forgotten both. Never really got the hang of the tin whistle anyway.
Oh and I tried playing a violin once and it sounded fucking horrible.
Favourite: guitar, obvs. What other instrument lets you be so NOISY?
It really is the bad-assest and the best. I play keys and (6 string) guitar, and in bands have always gravitated towards the latter. But bass fucking rules, and I sometimes wish I'd made the decision from day 1 to be a bassist. Can't be bothered with bands any more, so not much point in going out & buying all the gear.
Think i might. Need to find socks.
I really really really want a bass guitar. I made up the starts of a new tune today and i already know i want bass over the whole thing. 5 guitars in this house and not one bass! scandalous.
Just make sure you four-finger stretch. Don't look like a twat on youtube.
i think ive managed to stretch out my fingers nicely. Still a bit to go, as i get a constant ache in my left thumb. Some classical pieces make you do crazy stretches.
Depending on the bass you have I'd say 6/7 frets from F on the E string = 4 frets on the E string of a bass. You're also (depending on the action) pressing down on harder, thicker strings. Though if you're a girl, you're likely to want strings of a lighter gauge to suit smaller hands.
One thing that amazes me about most modern rock bassists is their complete neglect and inability to use their pinky. It makes playing so much harder, confuses the hell out of me. They always look so fucking tense too. I've got beef with modern bassists.
It's 5-6 frets on guitar, 7 if you have fucking massive hands.
I really do have really small porky fingers. I hate my hands.
I'll probably be one of these people not using their pinky! I'd love to learn some slap bass.
I tried using my pinky initially but just kind of gave up. When I had my first bass lesson my teacher said "dude, gotta use that pinky" and told me to 4 finger stretch every night for 15 mins or so. It does hurt if you're not used to it but opens you up to so many new things and makes it dead easy to play scales and runs.
I've noticed that whenever someone wants to play bass, they always say slap! I can do a little bit myself, but don't really like it - unless you're play funk or something.
Doesn't matter the size of your hands - you should look it up, it'll do you wonders.
so he can show me the ropes. Im going to try and get his cousin to give us his. He doesn't even use it!
It would definitely be funk for the slap bass. It's a really intense sound. I love it.
I want a double bass too. Oh man, i hate days like these when i think of all the instruments i want. The bass guitar is most likely to happen, and soon :)
hunt you down, snap off your little finger and stick it up your arse
but I fucking love bass these days, really want to form a new band and be the bassist. Lots of distortion. Boom.
but neither well
Listening to Beethoven concert on the TV last night, I became aware of much I like French Horns.
Maybe not my favourate, but definately underated by me previously.
1 yamaha bass
1 good electric piano
1 yamaha synth
1 yamaha dj keyboard
1 boring yamaha keyboard
1 korg mini monotron
1 korg pandora multi effects
2 practice amps
2 hand drums
For it is truly the most important part of any orchestra.
I don't actually own one but we've got a set of black chopsticks that suffice.
Either that or the jews harp. Or the kazzoo.
Rattle looks like hitler delivering his speech
to accumulate enough instruments to start a band in the past few years, guitars, bass, drums, cheap keyboards, mandolin... rather depressed that I'm nowhere near competent on any of them bar guitar, the mandolin is fiendish as the neck is so little and tuning it is a hell of a job! Want to practice drums a lot more as it's a hell of a workout and so much fun. I just got a 1/2 sized violin for my little girl so hope that gets some use... it's tiny!
Would love it if I had space/money for a Kotolin, vst versions of it just don't compare. Obviously it's just a posh chinese xylophone but the sound is beautiful. In my imaginary mansion I'd have a whole room of chinese/japanese traditional instruments.
Used to be in a shit band in college, haven't played in anger since then. Haven't *actually* played for a couple of years if I'm being honest. Bought two keyboards last year, can't play the keyboard. One's total shit but has a nice bass sound and the other is amazing. I paid no more than a tenner for the pair. Had it in my head for ages that I wanted a keyboard, went on eBay and found the shitty one and bid a few quid, then found the amazing one listed incorrectly and bid a fiver, not expecting to win, and then I won both. I felt like I was ripping the woman off when I picked up the good one, she had no idea what it was. My friend told me he paid £200 for one. I can't even play the fucking thing. Need to start another band, then I'll learn. I want a drum machine.
at least those are the ones I had lessons in. The piano is easily my favourite instrument, such great fun to just sit down and play. We used to have 3 pianos and a harpsichord at my parents' house too, spoilt for choice really.
Also play guitar, bass and drums reasonably well (played all in bands) and I own quite a few synthesisers. Played the organ a bit too but find it fiendishly difficult with the pedals!
i play the tamborine haha. I play the standard guy in a band set all of them poorly.
Practicing hard. Housemate loves me
No idea how I remember this or even remember how to spell this since I heard of it in year 7.
and I can play harmonica to the really basic level that anyone who picks up a harmonica for the first time can play it.
I have an incredibly basic level of drums and piano that I have taught myself but it's been a few years since I've had the chance to try either, pretty sure I've forgotten all the basic piano tunes I've learnt and my drumming will probably be ridiculously out of time next time I try it. I really should buy like a synth or something, my really basic piano knowledge could really be utilised as 'being able to play synth'. I know where all the notes are, I'm just really bad at chords.
Favourite: guitar obviously, it's clearly the best intrument.
and replied again. Stop bumping old threads you cunts.
But I've started playing bass again.
I can passably play guitar. For five of those years I've been trying to perfect my finger picking. But I'm useless at it. Bloody useless.
We have a keyboard, but I can't really play it anymore. I've probably not looked at it in five years.
Also, I started to learn how to play the clarsach (Gaelic harp thing) when I was a bairn, but I gave up when I kept getting blood blisters on my fingers. Also, I realised pretty quickly that although I could pick up the technical skills for playing OK, I was awful at reading music.
Oh, I can work a soundboard/mixer ok and live mix a bit. That counts right?
it's hard to choose man.
i really want to pick up an instrument but i don't think i'd ever be any good, i was terrible at everything in music lessons at school. my sense of rhythm sucks too. my boyfriend has a violin lying about that he doesn't use, might see if i can nick it and try to learn that - THE DREAM.
They are the bugle and the piano.
Been playing the piano since I was 6, but had a few years gap, but back on that horse now.
Still play the bugle here and there.
Not sure why I don't just email you that question.
In fact I have substantially less tooth than I had before the start of the week.
I WANT THEM TO ADD MORE TOOTH. NOT TAKE IT AWAY
