the Halifax Radio ads

guntrip [Edit] [Delete] 48 replies 01:46, 13 May '11

why are they so terrible?
why do they persist with them?
they're the advertising equivalent of watching your dad dance on a table at a school disco.
i'm not sure an ad campaign has ever made me want to punch its creator before.

    • DUBSTEP QUESTION

I actually really enjoyed that. Can you recommend me an album where I would hear stuff of that quality so I can judge if this is a one-off or actually I like dubstep. :-o

      TheoGB @proslo | 13 May '11, 10:53 | X
      • It's the sort of 'brostep' that gets lapped up at posher unis.

Rusko is one of the exponents of it http://youtu.be/Vr21MblV0Bw

  • Baffling

considering how awesome the ones with Howard were.

    Icarus-Smicarus | 13 May '11, 01:55 | X
  • some companies just seem incapabe of churning out decent adverts

    halifax and t-mobile especially

    jazz-ballet | 13 May '11, 01:58 | X
    • add Direct Line to this list

I CAN'T GET IT, THE FENG SHUI IS ALL WRONG

      • The ones with Armstrong are quite funny

        at least I think

        Yesiamaduck @guntrip | 13 May '11, 10:40 | X
      • I've come to the realisation that I don't like Chris Addison

        this advert helped

        tomatron @guntrip | 13 May '11, 14:29 | X
    • The t-mobile ones are shite

but do generally get a decent reception from the target market.

      colinzealuk @jazz-ballet | 13 May '11, 10:46 | X
      • something something decent reception with T-Mobile!

^ that's my joke. can't be bothered to work out the details.

        • Two TV aerials decided to get married,

the ceremony was rubbish but they had a decent reception.

          he_tu @amnuck | 13 May '11, 10:55 | X
  • Companies make terrible adverts on purpose

Its a new advertising 'thing' apparently. As long as the brand name is put across, the actual quality of the advert doesnt matter, even if it makes them out to be cretins. I'm not sure I agree.

    Songs_about_ducking | 13 May '11, 10:36 | X
    • Also, I hate the new 'Urban skater crew' Lucozade advert

It makes me want to stamp on someones face and crush bits of skull into the pavement

      Songs_about_ducking @Songs_about_ducking | 13 May '11, 10:38 | X
    • I think it's more a thing for little known brands wanting to raise as much awareness as possible

A quick and cheap way to do that is to make a really annoying ad you spend absolutely nothing on and spam it in cheap airspace

      See

      Gocompare
      webuyanycar

The thing that's most annoying about the Halifax ads for me as someone who works in the industry is that they're paying probably 15 times what those shit companies are for pretty much the same output

      LordLuciusBanter @Songs_about_ducking | 13 May '11, 11:33 | X
      • daytime TV is full of these

today i've seen painfully awful low budget ads for uniformdating, com and some male online clothing store that had a fake Johnny Vegas in the ad - like, a fat REALLY NORTHERN guy rambling away. imagine making an ad and not having the cash to hire Johnny Vegas. IMAGINE THAT.

        guntrip @LordLuciusBanter | 13 May '11, 11:35 | X
        • maybe this is what I deserve for watching 90s Law & Order episodes on FX

          guntrip @guntrip | 13 May '11, 11:37 | X
          brusma this'd this
        • Yeah so the rule of thumb is you spend £10k making an ad per £100K you spend on advertising space

The stuff that's on during the day is called direct response (a nightmare I managed to remove myself from) and the only objective is to get people to buy stuff to make a return on investment. So they make it as cost effective as possible by making cheap shit ads, and spamming them in the cheapest airtime (during the day cos only losers like you are watching).

It's seriously so depressing, there's basically rules you have to follow to make a successful ad. Say the phone number/URL three times, showing on screen all the time. The ads are basically created by a vlookup

          LordLuciusBanter @guntrip | 13 May '11, 11:54 | X
          • the uniformdating.com one came on as I was reading this

            and, yep, three times.

            WONGA DOT COM PAYDAY LOANS

            guntrip @LordLuciusBanter | 13 May '11, 12:00 | X
            • I was SLATING wonga.com on twitter for their interest rates

And got spammed by a wonga.com bot account telling me to borrow money at their low interest rates

              GREAT SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY GUYS

              LordLuciusBanter @guntrip | 13 May '11, 12:02 | X
        • Yeah but Activia paid for Jamie Theakston IN THAT COAT!

Sounds like a fake Jonny Vegas would be better.

          TheoGB @guntrip | 13 May '11, 11:54 | X
        • I just realised I had Johnny Vaughn in my head there, not Vegas.

          TheoGB @guntrip | 13 May '11, 11:55 | X
  • One question about this bilge:

Do they still get their staff on to do the ads? Those poor bastards if so.

    TheoGB | 13 May '11, 10:52 | X
    • I hope so, or else the standard of drama training in this country is truly appalling.

      brokenchairs @TheoGB | 13 May '11, 11:02 | X

  • Has anyone in the south ever seen those 'buy one get one free' windows ads?

They don't seem to be on youtube but they're the best/worst thing ever.

    • Are those the ones that go:

YOU BUY ONE, YOU GET ONE FREE, I SAY YOU BUY ONE, YOU GET ONE FREE.

I've seen them before but I thought that was from the 90s.

    • I think so

slightly derranged man shouting at the camera? Really low budget feel? They're on Comedy Central or something at about 3am.

      colinzealuk @Royter-Hatfood | 13 May '11, 12:00 | X

So, they are good commericials or something

probably ever. Can't think of anything worse.
