up to the house
I remember the original frenzy of adulation for this album on the pages of the NME; and consequently assuming it was shit.
Spotify has allowed me to listen to this album now and I'm pleased to say it's made it to five tracks: Which all sound like a budget Elbow wrapped in asbestos insulation. Some people have been listening to this for 10 years. They should be simultaneously applauded for their endurance and pitied for their inadvertent self-lobotomy.
And now like it a lot. I preferred one of the two records before it with the black cover, but still... I like it.
I'm a big fan of album titles flat out stating what the listener will hear.
So I might have persevered if this record had been called "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Trudging Through Glurge While a Man Follows Us At a Distance of 12 Feet Mumbling Something About His Problems"
Surely Elbow are a 'high spec' version of this, then? They weren't about then, were they?
On the subject of Elbow, that Spotify ad for their remastered debut threatens to send me to sleep every time it comes on. Are there any songs on there that don't sound like a funeral dirge for a Mogadon executive?
I don't object to the adverts I'm just questioning how a band as (on the basis of that advert) deathly dull as Elbow ever made it big.
I don't listen to Spotify enough to justify paying for it at the moment.
a) Elbow were about then - even though their 'debut' didn't drop until, what was it, 2001?
b) I'm not talking about Elbow, I'm talking about Spiritualized. The only way your phrasing works requires me to go into an irrelevant digression about the former.
c) I thought it would be less confusing to readers as if I wrote as if I were speaking in 2009, not 1998. Any reference I make should be interpreted as if this were the case.
d) In Ancient China, pedantry was a vice occasionally viewed as a capital offense.
That trap was for Theo, fucknut.
Now you'll have to be beheaded and your clan exterminated instead. Shame.
And if it was still a capital offence you'd have been killed long before I had a chance to point out your own inconsistencies and get slaughtered in my turn.
Didn't it strike you as at all strange that I'd spell it that way in a statement criticising pedantry?
Imperial law dictates you be beheaded and your clan exterminated. Shame(2).
I'm wearing a flexisteel flesh coloured neck protector, a la Judge Dredd so I'm okay.
b) How the hell have Spiritualized and Elbow become the subject of a direct comparison? This is not a judgement on the merits of either, I'm merely surprised that someone would hear one and think of the other.
