finally settling and man it's great. me and my girlfriend went for a walk and saw a dog eating snow and coughing it back up and getting confused, had a snowball fight and then came home to make a barbecue in the snow.
she's meant to get a train at 10 tomorrow...probably won't run huh?
Snowdrifts up to three inches high, woodlice and other small creatures are getting buried. Whichever morons are supposed to grit this road have neglected to do so. For this reason the half-hourly bus is sliding past at about 4mpg and people on mopeds are looking worried.
Various foreigners are laughing at britain's incapability to deal with weather.
no exageration. I had to beg my mum to pick me up from the station and we eventually managed to do the five minute drive back in over twenty minutes.
I think I may not go to work tomorrow
on north end road are Caffe Caffe (next to West Ken tube station) and an indian place down near tesco express just off north end word. What's the green cafe, that thai place?
it's towards the kensington end of north end road, past best mangal. i want to try all the places around the area. i went to the chicken shop around there and it was pretty good, pretty cheap.
we should go for a best mangal one time. what do you order from them? i love the iskender.

my garden has loads of foliage, all of which is covered in thick snow, so it's like being in a weird snow cave. i just built a snow leopard.
[when i say snow leopard, i mean a fat round snowman-like kitty cat with perky ears and tail and twig whiskers. but we'll go with snow leopard.]
Job interview starting in a bit over an hour, buses out, have to walk 2 miles through the snow probably to find my interviewer hasn't even made it in...
just walked from old street to clapton after a night-shift because i suspected no overground was running (wrong)
HORRIFIC. I had icicles in my hair and one of my ballet shoes (yeah, maybe i should have checked the BBC website last night) filled up with ice so i ran when i was within five minutes of my house with one tighted unshod foot. At one point there was this peculiar blue light so it looked like the glitter you used to get on christmas cards and i actually thought i was imagining it and i was going to die.
once i get over my anger at tfl and life and snow i'm gonna make a snowman. and then kick its head in.
I was supposed to give a (dire) presentation today. I'm fairly sure there's a god now. Some sort of snow god, but a god nonetheless. Immabout to make a bacon sandwich and sit in my bathrobe.
There were some hateful monsters on the tube this morning. One woman couldn't get on the tube, asked a man to move so that she could get on and stole his hat when he wouldn't (and he couldn't move).
apparently the overground from hackney central is still running, though they're not sure if that'll still be the case in an hour. my flatmate talked to a TFL guy at the station who said they're not even sure the buses will be back by tomorrow.

uxbridge road was full of people having snowball fights. in the middle of the road. a wee bit dumb - cars + icy roads = not necessarily stopping in time.
i had a brief snowball fight on the roof of bush hall. it was epic. [it wasn't really. i threw snow down the neck of my opponent then fled inside. i still won.]
Looks like I'm going to be sent home now too. I'm here and ready to work! Oh noes about WITTR, hopefully they'll do atp instead? My boss is 'working from home' - why am I the only one bothered enough to come in? I'm going to bring this up next time we have salary reviews fo' sho'
If the french weren't so busy protesting, they'd be laughing at us mercilessly right about now. How come you can drive a coach up a mountain in a blizzard in france, fairly straightforwardly, yet you get a couple of centimetres here and the whole country shuts down?
I hate being local to work. Everyone else has called in to say they can't get here as the trains aren't running and the M25 is closed. I can't really do anything. It's just me and my boss :(
I hate being local to work. Everyone else has called in to say they can't get here as the trains aren't running and the M25 is closed. I can't really do anything. It's just me and my boss :(
i wish i'd checked tfl before i left for work and realised i could have just lied and pretended i couldn't get into work especially as i'm a bit sick at the moment.
saying that i had a great time getting in. i <3 wellington boots. walked to liverpool street station stopping to take lots of pics. had to wait a bit for them to let us in. got onto the platform and the second train to come was totally empty. then another walk from notting hill to kensington, took some more pics and saw a snowman. yay!
still wish i was at home though. neither of my two bosses are here. annoying.
and its RED ALERT WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE FROM SNOW. Do you think scandinavian countries have a funny news item at the end of their news broadcasts featuring a wry look at how the UK coped with 2.5cm of snow today.. The rest of europe is laughing at us people !!
10.21am:
London Ambulance Service will only respond to "life-threatening calls" today.
"The extreme weather has placed the London Ambulance Service under severe pressure today and our priority is to get to those patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries as quickly as possible," said, Richard Webber, acting director of operations.
they may say it's running with delays but what that actually means is you'll get half way to your destination, the train will be taken out of service, there'll be no trains going back the other way, and you'll have to take a short tube journey then walk back from Angel to Hackney Central over some seriously tiring bumpy icy paths.
but still, now that silliness is over, NO WORK!!!!
It's not lying much though, lame. It took me twice as long to get to college today because i couldn't actually see when i was walking. SNOW IN MY EYES.

*4mph although the mpg figure probably isn't far off either.
We have six inches at least
no exageration. I had to beg my mum to pick me up from the station and we eventually managed to do the five minute drive back in over twenty minutes.
I think I may not go to work tomorrow
I've never seen it snow this heavily in London
Public transport here is fu-u-u-u-cked tomorrow.
i remember it snowed about this heavily
the first winter i was here (feb 2004), but that happened on a weekday when there were more council staff around and stuff.
tomorrow is not going be fun for you suckas on public transport :D
(i was just out on my roof terrace
totally silent, over an inch of snow on the ground and really lovely. SHAME IT WAS SO COLD)
britians inability to deal with a little bit of snow is outragous
if schools close because of a few inches of snow it will be a scandal
toughen up you bunch of sissys
I had a snowfight with my flatmates,
and made a snow angel. We all snuck up to our other flatmate's bedroom, and chucked snowballs at him. A few stony glares in the morning, I bet!
but
being a monday, it would be logical if heavy - as no time to prepare over the weekend
gritters finally turned up

Cheers for the tip,
I will note it down with an eager palate.
My flatmate built a mini snowman on our terrace ledge about an hour ago, it is still going strong.
:D
i don't know how to build a snowman, so i always just build a wall or a pile of snow.
have you been to any other places on north end road? that cafe, the green one? i went there for a fry up one time and it was actually really good.
the only eateries I've been to

in summary
fucking loads of snow
i live near angel, we walked down the road and there was noone around, cos we left the house at midnight
update #2
been for a walk, it's really bad out there.
i finished work at midnight in shepherds bush

i like the image
of the buses having minds and being quite confused
imagine thomas the tank engine
but red, and with bendy middles. they looked totally incompetent. the words MASSIVE FAIL came to mind. i seriously hope someone got a picture.
i just built a big snowmum and child in my back garden, with little plant-pot hats. holding hands. how unutterably twee/gay/lame/awesome.
I will never in my life by excited about an inch of snow.
That is just the way when you have to walk through 2 foot of snow to get to work.
are the buses still out?
the notices are still on the TfL website.
i'm getting the fear nobody else is going to be at work today...
I've just walked to work from her house because they're all still out.
I'm not going to be doing that again in a hurry. My legs are proper hurting now.
THIS
country
Why today of all days?
Job interview starting in a bit over an hour, buses out, have to walk 2 miles through the snow probably to find my interviewer hasn't even made it in...

No London bus network whatsoever.
WORK CANCELLED NO WORK NO WORK NO WORK
SNOW DAY SNOW DAY SNOW DAY
I made it into work today :(
I'm the only person in the office though so maybe I won't have to stay...
Anyone for a snow ball fight in Hyde Park?
I'm the only person in here as well.
I could be tempted by a snowball fight around Angel Station if anyone fancies joining me up here. I'M SO ALONE.
I'm pretty sure I could throw a snowball that far.
There were some hateful monsters on the tube this morning. One woman couldn't get on the tube, asked a man to move so that she could get on and stole his hat when he wouldn't (and he couldn't move).
a thin covering in sheffield.
Argh, really thick even around King's Cross.
I wasn't expecting it to stick at all.
So many tube lines are down as well.
Oh well, I'm back home now. And only an hour and ten minutes after I set out to leave!
day off!!
i love snow
I am going for a WALK. It's gonna be insane!!!!
SNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.
do i attempt to go to work?
apparently the overground from hackney central is still running, though they're not sure if that'll still be the case in an hour. my flatmate talked to a TFL guy at the station who said they're not even sure the buses will be back by tomorrow.
everything aboveground is pretty much fucked
i wouldn't risk it.
overground is running?
whoops. I could have gone in then. Ah well.
You still can go into work!
fuck that
No work for me...
...and as i'm in charge, no work for all my staff too.
I didnt bother trying to get into work

do you have remote access to Outlook?
I logged on to mine and there was an email from the chief executive.

YES!
snow day off. i'm gonna go and make a snowman and take photos.
This isn't fair!
I should be playing in the snow. Someone come and close my offices and say that I can play in the snow.
Oh wow...
I woke up warm, so had a bath, fed the cats, read some manga. Then opened the curtains and w.o.a.h. That is ridiculously impressive. Crazy.
Right, I'm going to try and the day off too. My car is completely buried.
Even if I made it in I wouldn't be able to do anything. I'd probably be stranded there after the second wave hits later on anyway. eek.
NO WORK!!!
SERVERS DOWN. YEAH!
SNOW SNOW SNOW SNOW SNOW SNOW SNOW SNOW :D
i just walked upstairs
wearing just my boxers and some slippers to see what all the kerfuffle was about cos i could hear some kids screaming. there was lots of snow. it went up my leg.
i completely forgot that there was snow last night. no lecture, though i hardly go in anyway...
'snow falling heavier this afternoon'

Bonjour! Donde esta die gezundheit? DE LA CONFITURE.
agh you mangled my brain
I've got an email interview type thing for an internship in Paris this week. FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
INCREDIBLE SCENES
I walked into work with a massive grin on my face. There's no-one here. But the central heating at my office (and free tea and cafeteria) pwns my freezing cold house.
LCC closed, was just about to leave. Will now probably sit here on my arse all day.
I went to lcc, I can't imagine those underpasses in the mush!
Scary!
im going hoooomeee!
My cats just went outside for the first time since October
They weren't as scared of snow as I'd hoped. It was the cutest thing ever though. They were completely covered and looked even tinier than they are. Took half a box of dried food to get them back inside though...
<3 pets in the snow is my best in the snow
I like this snow this morning.
My boss isn't going in and told me to work from home too.
What's Victoria Park look like?
Post some pics!
I'm not going out there! Bugger off!
well that was weird
got to wanstead tube to find an enterprising member of TFL staff waving people away, saying "no central line, mate". which is pretty odd because the TFL website says the central line is running. IDK
Only 4 of our department of 16 are in
and it's all the young uns (commuters couldn't make it).
Oddly, it's the first time in ages I've been in on time. Gonna eat up the book I'm reading I think.
I hope I can get home OK
what with thickening snow tomorrow, although it is only an hour or so's walk
*this afternoon
not tomorrow
I tried to get into work.
They wouldn't let me on the tube and I was fucked if I'd try what would be a 30-40 minute walk in good weather.
I'm 'working' from home...
Photos here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/laurensphotorama
oh good, so it's not just me who's been turned away from tube lines that
tfl says are working. phew.
I walked for almost a hour this morning to get in.
Got some wicked photos! :D
My god I just hiked to work this morning!
Uxbridge Road was the place to be this morning
I saw a man slip and slide into the path of (thankfully) the world's slowest Fiesta.
last night
uxbridge road was full of people having snowball fights. in the middle of the road. a wee bit dumb - cars + icy roads = not necessarily stopping in time.
i had a brief snowball fight on the roof of bush hall. it was epic. [it wasn't really. i threw snow down the neck of my opponent then fled inside. i still won.]
Where do you work now? I thought it was still the Luminaire but that ain't Shé Bu...
:D
bush hall
like above :) it's very nice.
is there anything more annoying than a 5 minute snow shower which promises so much
but delivers so little? gutted. i thought we were going to get a grand covering there.
disappointing :(
it took me an hour
to walk to work (in Reading). the roads were pretty much deserted. my shoes are really wet now :(
everyone seemed to be struggling, i was just strolling past people.
most snow i've seen in Reading since 1994 i think.
im going hoooomeee!
im going hoooomeee!
I'm the only person in our office on Fleet Street other than the security guard
DEDICATION! And cold feet.
I saw the workers at the rail link next to Brick Lane having a huge snowball fight too
it was awesome! And a puppy going mental in the snow. Everyone was smiling lots. Fun walk in.
you're mental
also I missed WITTR last night due to the paper failing to get me guestlisted. AGHHHH.
ha ha! It was a really fun march into work, took some good photos along the way too
Looks like I'm going to be sent home now too. I'm here and ready to work! Oh noes about WITTR, hopefully they'll do atp instead? My boss is 'working from home' - why am I the only one bothered enough to come in? I'm going to bring this up next time we have salary reviews fo' sho'
also:
can someone explain why the London underground would halt because of some snow?
this country is pathetic
All the depots and the outer ends of the lines are above ground.
Combine that with the fact that the staff have to actually GET there.
It's because the trains are held outdoors and they are snowed in.
Also water will have caused dangerous conditions within the stations.
it's quite a lot of snow.
hardly pathetic.
it's quite a lot of snow.
hardly pathetic.
I walked all the way from Baker Street to Fleet Street
and no-one's in! Get to go at lunchtime though, hooray!
It seems the birds don't mind the snow :(
The reserve looks really lovely though, I should have brought my camera.
There's a dog in the playground!
Stinky McTwatbags has bought his Pogs in to swap!
Can I copy your History homework?
IT'S JUST FUCKING SNOW
Shut it.
:D
:D
If the french weren't so busy protesting, they'd be laughing at us mercilessly right about now. How come you can drive a coach up a mountain in a blizzard in france, fairly straightforwardly, yet you get a couple of centimetres here and the whole country shuts down?
Yeah, I'm ALWAYS driving coaches up mountains, for your information.
I'm going to go and protest about their mountain-based blizzard-weather coach-driving skills
the fuckers.
SNOW!
POTD, already
Good work sir!
urgh
there's a thunder storm over my house, i wanna go out and play :(
Oh man. About two more feets of fresh, untouched wonderfulness has topped us up overnight.
Hyde Park snowball fight much?
all london bus services cancelled?!
wtf? How bad IS it down there?
I don't even have any snow
BAD!
that looks like call of duty
It's even lamer over this side
mind you my hands almost froze on the 5 minute walk to uni and back
Why am I here?
I hate being local to work. Everyone else has called in to say they can't get here as the trains aren't running and the M25 is closed. I can't really do anything. It's just me and my boss :(

argh
i wish i'd checked tfl before i left for work and realised i could have just lied and pretended i couldn't get into work especially as i'm a bit sick at the moment.
saying that i had a great time getting in. i <3 wellington boots. walked to liverpool street station stopping to take lots of pics. had to wait a bit for them to let us in. got onto the platform and the second train to come was totally empty. then another walk from notting hill to kensington, took some more pics and saw a snowman. yay!
still wish i was at home though. neither of my two bosses are here. annoying.
THEY LET YOU IN? :(
I wanted pics of the city in snow but Mile End was just totally not letting people in. :(
they did
i didn't even wait that long, maybe 5 mins.
i really wish they hadn't.
Buggers. I should have given it a bit more time.
I can't work properly at home. :(
why is manchester so rubbish?
:( nowhere near enough snow
It used to be enough when I was there.
They'd never grit Plymouth Grove's pavement either so walking into uni was a fucking NIGHTMARE.
HR have just emailed and
told us all to go home at 2pm! WOOHOO!
I'm so jealous!
I think we'll leave a little early but not much!
does anyone want a snowball fight in canary wharf?
i'm one of 10 or so people in the office, and we're being penalised so we haev to cover everyone! :(
My flat last night/this morning
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=207510&l=e4bb0&id=554270423
We have an internal courtyard/garden type thing in the middle of my block of flats which looks awesome in the snow.
you gotta love the news coverage in this country, slightest threat of snow
and its RED ALERT WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE FROM SNOW. Do you think scandinavian countries have a funny news item at the end of their news broadcasts featuring a wry look at how the UK coped with 2.5cm of snow today.. The rest of europe is laughing at us people !!
Think there's been slightly more than an inch of snow here...
yeah I know its been a bit worse in some places, but still the news
coverage isn't really in proportion to the weather is it..
Nah, but it never is!
I was saying much the same thing last night. They were literally reporting on snowfall, nothing else had happened at that point.
it makes me laugh, they panic old people into clearing the shelves
of bread and water, I had to restrain an 85 year old woman just to get to croissants in Sainsburys this morning.
They aren't really, you know
People in Scandinavian countries don't panic in snow, but that's because they're used to heavy snowfall.
?
Will this ever get boring?
I think not.

Camden Council have closed their parks! Kid's off school - what do they want to do? Go to the park. What is wrong with these people?
lol
i think pretty much all our staff are at home today.
and
10.21am:
London Ambulance Service will only respond to "life-threatening calls" today.
"The extreme weather has placed the London Ambulance Service under severe pressure today and our priority is to get to those patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries as quickly as possible," said, Richard Webber, acting director of operations.
jeez
its stopped snowing
gutted :(
oh no it hasn't
this is currently the heaviest snow yet by far (zone2)! Anyone who has managed to get somewhere will get stuck if this happens for much longer.
It's still snowing lots in New Cross,
and Goldsmiths has decided to shut because of it. I only live a five minute walk away and don't have to go in, it's great.
for the love of god, don't attempt to get the overground (probably too late advice centric)
they may say it's running with delays but what that actually means is you'll get half way to your destination, the train will be taken out of service, there'll be no trains going back the other way, and you'll have to take a short tube journey then walk back from Angel to Hackney Central over some seriously tiring bumpy icy paths.
but still, now that silliness is over, NO WORK!!!!
We're building a snow man in Finsbury square at lunch time :D
I feel like I'm 8 years old.
Finsbury square?
I could come and help! Potentially lethal City Road lunchtime run here I come!
I must've walked past you people
Brighton is bloody covered in the stuff!
Brighton is bloody covered in the stuff!
shit whoops..
apparently according to my not smug at all freinds no ther company in brighton is functioning...
bloody american express juggernauting towards financial ruin...
I've heard it from a good source that we will be allowed home at lunchtime
The Sunderland snow that I can see is rubbish :'(
admittedly, I've not ventured out yet, but there's barely any I can see. And it's sunny.
thats sounds remarkably dull...
VITAL SNOW ADVICE:
http://www.boston.com/interactive/graphics/2008/20090107_ice/
OH YEAH
I just woke up as I took the day off - I slept round my mates - I played in the snow until about 4am and now I got up nd there's transport nightmares.
I'm currently in MASSIVE SMUG MODE.
This is all well and good..
But I hope it clears up fairly soon, as for once I have stuff to do. I'm about to head outside for the first time
SNOW IN EDINBURGH!
It's not lying much though, lame. It took me twice as long to get to college today because i couldn't actually see when i was walking. SNOW IN MY EYES.
INSANE
snow everywhere. I take back what I said yesterday, this is exciting.
rota snowman (H)
