actual question regarding london assembley constituencies
how was the make up decided?
i ask because i'm looking at a map of them, and they're a bit... strange.
for instance, i live in the "north east" constituency, which consist of the boroughs of Islington, Hackney and Waltham Forest. obviously these three boroughs are quite, quite different, and a number of the other constituencies seem to be made of similarly-disparate groupings. then again, a number of them aren't.
was there any logic behind these?
Well presumably
it was to ensure that they're of roughly equal size, population-wise, whilst not drawing boundaries through the middle of recognised areas. Constituency boundaries will always be a bit arbitrary for that reason.
well, duh.
my point was more that the boundaries currently set are so wide as to make it difficult to see how someone could decently represent an area's interests.
...
I don't think it would go down too well anywhere if they started officially designating the city's areas according levels of affluence. For one thing, money moves, and redrawing the boundaries every few years as some demo group realise they live in Craptown and move across a borough might cause headaches in the bureaucracy and tensions in the wallet.
...
I think there's a clue in their designation: "north-east".
Hey, I just realised - technically we live in the same place. Suck on that, chump!
^
this is entirely my point.
also
there's a constituency that's further north AND further east than this one. EVEN THE NAME MAKES NO SENSE.
...
They're not called "north" and "east" by any chance, are they?
