christmas presents for parent(s)

guntrip [Edit] [Delete] 63 replies 10:31, 20 December '07

what are you getting your parent(s)? how do you decide on what to by them?

i usually get my mother something/things i know she wants and something/things i think she'll like. i gave her a guillemots CD last christmas and she really liked it. this year i've bought her The Crane Wife by The Decemberists for similar reasons. i think it helps though that my mother is totally rad and loves music and stuff.

      • wow, really?

        that sounds really futuristic.

        • Yeah

Not all are done by wireless connection

          • imagine having like

portrait sized ones all over a room, set to chance every three or four minutes. you could totally bewilder senile relatives!

            • Haha

Have you ever read Farenheit 451? What you've described is in there, except the entire wall does it

    • that sounds really cool

maybe I can get my mum one of them next year.

    • I got a digital photo frame

but it's for both my mum and dad because I am poor. And I didn't pay anything for it.

      ^5.

I'm not sure how to react to that.

        • Why does your mum get much more expensive things?

What if your Dad finds out he got short changed? I bought my parents a digital photo frame between them. They'll have to take it in turns. Luckily they live in the same house.

        • I got my mum

a Borough Market bag, and two jars of chutney from there.

I still don't know what to get my dad. Any suggestions? He likes cooking, racing cycling, cats, Wales, seaside-type interior decoration, post-punk music and serial killers.

            • haha

I don't think he's ready for lolcats. He's taking a computer course for old people at the moment, and apparently he's having a bit of trouble using the mouse. He enjoyed me showing him cats on YouTube though!

        • DVDs and books

I usually have a pretty good idea of whether or not they'll like something.

A few years ago I got my mum and mp3 player and she had no idea what it was, but pretended to be happy anyway

        • My Mum got an amazon wishlist this year

so click click click and I was done. We all get my Dad the same thing every year, a book about trains. Seriously he gets really sulky if we but anything else. I've tried a couple of years to be creative, but I've now learnt to STICK TO THE LIST!

As ever my dad said he didn't want any presents, but that of all the presents he didn't want he most didn't want any more books.

His loss, I'm giving £8 to Oxfam in his name to buy textbooks for poor children in Africa. Plus a CD, plus some Crap Trump cards, they have categories like "Internet resale value" on them.

            • My dad's getting The Damned United

and probably something else if I can find something suitable. If he wasn't a diabetic who drank too much the something else would be a lot easier.

I've got an organic Christmas pud and a bottle of mulled wine for my mum, but they don't really count as I won them in the office raffle. I got her the Peter, Bjorn and John and Pipettes albums last year, but I'm not sure if she liked them. Bit stumped this year.

Everyone's male relatives should be getting the Damned United this year. I might put forward a petition to make it law, or something.

Like indoor sky diving, or theatre tickets or a mini holiday. Plus I can get involved too. I've tried giving my parents stuff like mini radio shows dedicated to them but they just don't like my music at all. Damn them

they both agree that at their advanced age they have everything they need and so conventional presents are unnecessary.
