i'm going on one for the first time ever on friday. what should i expect?
i am preparing myself for the worst
actually, they're alright.
where you going?
i pissed around in booking it and it cost me £19 in the end :'(
it's only worth it for a quid!
just spend the extra 12 and get the fucking train you nonce
i booked it on monday to travel on friday, so i doubt the train would've been £31 then...
would have been about 19 though, surely? Actually I have no idea at all. Probably not, though, as it was £18 return to Leeds when they had a special offer.
it was closer to £40.
Well I say that, but I'm assuming a Young Person's Railcard would make the train journey no more than about £45, so National Express are pricing themselves out of what I'd expect was their biggest market. Odd.
'Ways to Save' and choose 'Funfares'?
You can get a return for £16 AND air con and on some services, Wi-Fi.
in convenient times, sadly.
it's my own fault for leaving it to so long.
Funnily enough, I also was planning to National Express up to Manchester this weekend. But I'm even lazier than you and even though I had the chance to get a ticket for £16 on SUnday I decided I couldn't be arsed and now plan on repeating the whole process next week.
if you arrive at a sensible time etc.
why you coming to manchester?
munkyfest ( www.munkyfest.co.uk ) in cheshire on the saturday with a friend, and staying at a friend-of-this-friend's house in manchester on friday night as it was the easiest way to do it.
well, cheapest way anyway...
a power hungry driver.
someone sitting next to you who you don't know.
hope the journey isn't too long.
also, megatrains are shit if you live in the north. I just thought I'd say that.
so not that long.
but probably long enough.
I handled newcastle to london easily enough.
take a book.
newsflash: this happens on 'normal' busses too. and even trains!
its going to take about 7 long hours
the middle of the day, so it shouldn't be too bad :o)
London - Manchester a few times on the Megabus. It takes about 5 hours. Just don't expect much leg room and to be sat next to loud, screaming kids. At least that's what always seems to happen to me.
sound like my kinds of people.
i am pretty tired tho. been having a lot of late nights. some bastard was playing music ridiculously loud until two in the morning the other night. it was coming from across the street and sounded like i was wearing headphones
in a crappy bus?
If that's one-way it's exactly half a return train ticket, while taking AGES, and being an uncomfortable, ricketty, un-airconditioned bus.
GOSH and GOLLY.
i can't WAIT.
wait, i'm lying. there's a reason i always used to get the national express up to scotland...
No traffic jams
Plugs to re-charge portable music devicezzz
Face-to-face seating so you can meet new people
An overwhelming odour of urine
Just pay the extra £19! You'd only spend it on vodka and crisps, anyway
every penny counts right now.
(ie, i FINALLY got my 5 weeks holiday approved)
get a visa if you smell of megabus.
i'm not a nazi war criminal or a terrorist, so i shoyld be fine.
you have a recent passport? megabus wee shouldn't be an issue then
I have to renew mine in October... double the price for a little chip in it. WOO.
i go as it won't have six months on it when i leave.
also, it's basically been destroyed by being in my pocket at too many gigs.
on the way to Manchester they do anyway
every time I've been on one they've stopped for a driver change. The last time was in July last year, mind.
When I got the National Express from Chester - London recently there was no stops. And thst was a good 4 1/2 hours. Cunts.
yes there is.
or maybe i've always been on the bus with the hungry driver...
stopped at Sheffield for driver change and for more passengers. and at another service station for a breather. you can get food at either of these. well I could anyway.
i might get one of the crazies to beat me round the head until i pass out.
i need to save money.
london-manchester won't be too soul destroying. it's only the 9 hour ones that REALLY kill you! just make sure to charge up your mp3 player!
tip: get there really early, get a seat in the middle of the bus, pile lots of stuff on your seat beside you and listen to the loudest shoutiest music you have at top volume on your headphones and glare at everyone who walks past. Preferably be eating a packet of cheese & onion crisps, too. that way no one will sit next to you and take up your leg room!
you're a pro at these things.
in a ball over the two seats and actually fall asleep when you get on. no one can sit next to you then.
once on an overnight bus to london I did that, and a few stops in this fucking german guy like moved my legs off the seat next to me to sit there. there was someone in front with an empty seat next to him! gah!
but he did buy me a bottle of coke at the service station, so I guess I can't complain TOO much.
he just wanted to touch you?
pretty regularly on megabus. It's ok I spose. A bit uncomfortable. When it was hot it was unbearable. When it was cold it was freezing. I don't know if I could do a much longer distance.
But 19 quid? That's ridiculous.
only book it yesterday to travel on friday and back on sunday, so its my own fault. would've cost me £7 if i'd booked it three weeks ago like my friend told me to :'(
i didn't think megabus actually went up to 19 quid.
the trip to Manchester was pleasant. the bus was about half-full, so i got a double seat to myself, and my hangover meant i just had a nice little sleep while listening to music.
the journey back yesterday was a nightmare. the M6 was closed, so we then spent two hours driving around cheshire to find another junction. when we did, somewhere near Stoke (i think??!) that was also closed. we then spent an hour sat in traffic in Newcastle-under-Lyme. there were a lot of burnt out buildings there, y'know.
eventually got back to Victoria at 8:30pm, three hours late.
obviously, not the bus' fault, but the fact that it had next to no air con and we stopped for five minutes at Watford Gap kinda were..
still, £9 each way so can't complain too much.
it's a rubbish service station. there aren't even any arcade machines, and i wanted to play time crisis!
such a stupid waste of time seeing as it's so close to London.
