The DIS AOTY polling thread
Here is where you vote for your favourite albums of 2015. Deadline of Sunday 3rd January and I'll post the results in the following week.
The rules:
Vote for your top 5 albums. In this format:
1. The artist who released your favourite album of 2015 - Name of album
2. The artist who released your 2nd favourite album of 2015 - Name of album
3. You get the idea
4. etc
5. The artist who released your 5th favourite album of 2015 - Name of album
If you post in this format it will really help me put the results together more quickly, 75% of the work last year was needing to re-format lists. I will also start another thread to put discussion of end of year lists it would be great if all jibber jabber goes in there. If you want to put your top 10/50/100 here that's fine, although it will probably twist the melons of people with greater OCD than me (and I'll only be counting the first 5 anyways).
Here's last year's results where Sun Kil Moon spanked all-comers:
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4458309
Now get voting.
are we doing 5 points for 1st, 4 points for 2nd etc?
We are. I'll do same methodology and the same dicing and slicing of the data as last year. If anyone wants something different we can discuss in the discussion thread.
My answer is:
1. FJM - Honeybear
2. Earl Sweatshirt - I don't like shit etc
3. Mountain Goats - Beat the Champ
4. Kendrick - Pimp Butterfly
5. Bjork - Vulnicura
1. Low - Ones and Sixes
2. Joanna Newsom - Divers
3. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
4. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell
5. Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit
My first four are easy - all proper classics in my view. Fifth place could equally well have gone to Sleaford Mods, Julia Holter, Bjork, Royal Headache, Floating Points, Colin Stetson, Vince Staples, Freddie Gibbs or a few others. Great year.
Actually, make Grimes - Art Angels my no4 and bump Sufjan to 5
I love Courtney, and 'Depreston' is song of the year, but that Grimes record just gets better and better the more I listen to it.
My answer is:
1) Drape - Relax/Release
2) Julia Holter - Have You In My Wilderness
3) Low - Ones & Sixes
4) Haiku Salut - Etch & Etch Deep
5) Petrels - Flailing Tomb
presuming nothing big comes along:
1. Viet Cong
2. Girl Band - Holding Hands with Jamie
3. Low - Ones and Sixes
4. Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss
5. Stara Rzeka - Zamknęły się oczy ziemi
1. Bjork - Vulnicura
2. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell
3. Julia Holter - Have You In My Wilderness
4. Jenny Hval - Apocalypse, Girl
5. Holly Herndon - Platform
Amazing year for music, could easily have swapped 20 or so albums in and out of that top 5. Top 2 though are for me both something very special.
been a damn fine year, and there are still loads that i've not checked out but so far:
1) Girl Band - Holding Hands with Jamie
2) Ezra Furman - Perpetual Motion People
3) Father John Misty - I love you Honeybear
4) The Cribs - For all My Sisters
5) Kendrick Lamaar - To Pimp a Butterfly
Honourable mentions to the following who on another day would have made top 5:
Courtney Barnett, Holly Herndon, Viet Cong, Sleater Kinney, Hot Chip, Wolf Alice......
totally forgot the sauna youth record and i fucking love it (not sure why i forgot it then)
that would have maybe pushed kendrick out the top 5. oh well, kendricks record is great too.
nah Sauna Youth needs the point(s) more
give it to them!
This year has been absolutely 'triffic
1. Vince Staples - Summertime '06
2. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell
3. Joanna Newsom - Divers
4. Bjork - Vulnicura
5. Ghostface Killah and BadBadNotGood - Sour Soul
Could've stuck Grimes, Girl Band, Braids, Kendrick Lamar, FKA twigs, Father John Misty, Godspeed, Panda Bear et al in there somewhere.
Almost sure of my top five...
...but want to give the new Oneohtrix Point Never one a few more spins to see if it will sneak in. Overall, a good year.
then why not post in the discussion thread until you have your top 5?
Because no one else is...
1. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell
2. Grimes - Art Angels
3. Joanna Gruesome - Peanut Butter
4. The Cribs - For All My Sisters
5. Vince Staples - Summertime 06'

I'm oldish
and generally 'go back' with music so am not too up with everything (that does sound old!).
Hence no Top 5 from me because I genuinely can't get 5. Would like to add my vote to Divers (Joanna Newsom) as it's an album that I really respect.

<3
The wait for your feedback is going to be gruelling, but it's these sorts of things that make life so thrilling.
first spin critique
Just what i expected, a typically whimsical bullshit number from Sufjan, what's your address Aphex so i can invoice you.
That aside what a lovely record, couple of absolute standout tracks and looking forward to giving it some more listens very soon! :)
:')
That first comment has proper done me

Still great live too natch.

5. Black Rivers - s/t

Number 5 gets in by virtue of being on my 'turntable' right now

3. Helios - Yume
4. Cheatahs - Mythologies
5. Baroness - Purple
1. Jim Perkins - Constance
2. Son Lux - Bones

...
6. Gideon Wolf - Near Dark
7. Raphael Anton Irasarri - Fragile Geography
8. Max Richter - Sleep
9. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell
10. Humans - Noontide
Bit late but, in no particular order (doubt they'll get enought votes for it to matter):
Loads of my either current or past favourite bands relased records in 2015 so it's been a great year for music for me but still some surprises and somes disappointments.
Ash - Kablammo!
Proving once again that Tim Wheeler is a brilliant and underrated pop song writer. Probably their strongest album since Free All Angels (but that's not including the excellent A-Z Series) it's a great fun mix of punk, pop and ballads.
mewithoutYou - Pale Horses
I loved Ten Stories and this takes some of that album and mixes it with the urgency and heaviness of Catch for Us the Foxes era. Full of great lines and melodies that roll and knock into each other making it as exciting as anything they've done which for a band on their 6th album is impressive.
Medium 21 - Remains (Lost Tapes Vol.1)
If there was a record I never thought I'd hear, let alone in 2015, it's this. Releases to zero fanfare, I only found out about it when seeing it on Spotify. From the title I guess it's the never released second album by the massively under rated/forgotten early 2000s band. They reminded me of a more exciting version of the national with similar drawled vocals but with more going on. Just as good if not better than their first album and it's great to hear some 'new' stuff from them this year.
The Wonder Years - No Closer to Heaven
Another surprise entry in that I'd never heard any Wonder Years records before but this is one of the best, most exciting, euphoric, anthemic, fist-pumping, sing-along emo/punk albums I've heard in ages.
Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell
The one that most people will have heard. Beautiful and touching.
Other stuff:
Desaparacedos - Payola
Very nearly made the top five but got pipped by the Wonder Years for reasons I can't quite remember. Another record I never thought would be out but Conor Oberst and the rest of Desa finally got round to releasing their second album 13 years after the amazing Read Music/Speak Spanish and it's just was exciting and visceral as their debut.
Craig Finn - Faith in the Future
A nice surprise this one as I didn't rate Crag Finn's (of the Hold Steady) first solo debut but this is one of the best things he's done in years with his lyrical story telling getting back to some heights he maybe hadn't been hitting recently. Also mention to the Newmyer's Roof Ep which is even better and has the song Extras which is the best thing he's done recently.
Darren Hayman - Florence
Darren continues to knock out brilliant albums on a regular basis. This is lovely stripped down folk.
Good Life - Everybody's Coming Down
Lot's of love for Tim Kasher (of Cursive) but he solo albums haven't done much for me so it was a nice surprise that the first Good Life album in 8 years was actually pretty good.
Modest Mouse - Strangers to Ourselves
A bit disappointed that this isn't in the top five as I do love Modest Mouse. It's good record but hasn't stayed with me as much as their other albums, I did enjoy it but I'd have hoped after so long they're have some back with something a bit stronger.
Decemberists - Treading similar ground to they're previous and up up there with Picaresque or the Crane Wife but still a good album.
Disappointments:
The World Is a Beautiful Place and I am No Longer Afraid To Die - Harmlessness
I loved first album Whenever If, Ever and though this would be easily in my top five but it never really clicked with me. Seems everyone else loves it so I'll chalk it down to 'it's me and not them'.
Belle & Sebastian - Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance
Yeah it's stronger that their previous one but it's still not that great. Perfect Couples is one of the worse songs they're every done.
Special Award for album that would've been near the top if it had been released this year not last:
Prawn - Kingfisher
Absolutely brilliant emo-ish indie rock with bits of Brand New and Death Cab.
1. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
2. Young Fathers - White Men Are Black Men Too
