was released in 1983. And The Beatles broke up years ago. Apart from that, you're spot on.
Never been massively into them but I've already played Rave Tapes three times today.
(basically a list of stuff out today with little bits from the press releases)
Mogwai – Rave Tapes - 'Rave Tapes' is the first studio album from the Glasgow five-piece since 2011's 'Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will'. Not that they have been resting on their considerable laurels: that record was swiftly followed by its concomitant remix set 'A Wretched Virile Lore' and this year saw the release of the pathfinding soundtrack to the genre-rewriting Channel 4/Canal+ undead drama 'Les Revenants'. There has also been touring, including a first live airing for another soundtrack, 'Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait' at the Manchester International Festival in July. More shows have been lined up in the UK and Europe to air 'Rave Tapes' for the first time (new shows in bold). See mogwai.co.uk for ticket information.
THEE SILVER MT.ZION MEMORIAL ORCHESTRA - FUCK OFF GET FREE WE POUR LIGHT ON EVERYTHING - Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything is the first definitive document of the band's newfound sound and style as a quintet. It’s also their first single LP-length work since the band’s debut record as a trio almost 15 years ago, and features road-tested pummelling rock-outs “Fuck Off Get Free (For The Island Of Montréal)”, “Take Away These Early Grave Blues” and “What We Loved Was Not Enough” alongside the previously unheard lullabies/minuets “Little Ones Run” and “Rains Thru The Roof At Thee Grande Ballroom (For Capital Steeze)” and the album centrepiece “Austerity Blues” with its closing lyric “Lord let my son live long enough to see that mountain torn down” sung in varying incarnations throughout the second half of this 14-minute epic.
Sophie Ellis Bextor – Wanderlust - Sophie Ellis-Bextor has announced she will release her new album 'Wanderlust' on the 20th January preceded by the single 'Young Blood'. 'Wanderlust' will be Sophie Ellis-Bextor's fifth studio album. Co-written, produced and arranged by acclaimed singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt, Wanderlust was recorded in a London studio in just two weeks with a tightly-knit group of musicians and friends. First single 'Young Blood' is a life affirming testament to true love, beautifully accompanied by Ed Harcourt's plaintive piano and soaring string arrangement. "The album is about roaming and your sense of where you come from, and how you take home with you but you also have this desire to get out there and see the world. I found making this album really empowering. I felt like after ten years of making records, this is like the biggest present to myself. I'm really proud of it and I feel really excited." Sophie's new album sees the 34 year old star blossoming into an accomplished singer -songwriter with its 11 powerfully understated songs showcasing a newfound maturity, both lyrically and musically.
Warpaint – S/T - 'Warpaint' is the follow-up to the LA four-piece's critically acclaimed debut album 'The Fool' (2010). 'Warpaint' was co-produced by Warpaint and Flood (PJ Harvey, Sigur Ros, New Order, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Foals), and mixed by Flood and Nigel Godrich (Radiohead).
Damien Jurado - Brothers And Sisters Of The Eternal Son - Secretly Canadian are thrilled to announce that DAMIEN JURADO will be releasing his new album Brothers AndSisters Of The Eternal Son on 20th January 2014. The album is the follow-up to 2012’s critically-acclaimed Maraqopa and again features Richard Swift producing, the third time in which the pair have collaborated. Expanding on the existential journey of its predecessor, Brothers And Sisters Of The Eternal Son tells the story of a man who disappears on a search for himself but never returns. The world of Brothers.. is birthed from the deepening partnership between Damien and producer Richard Swift.
Dog Bite – Tranquilisers - In a release inspired by the smooth rhythms of the region’s past, Atlanta-based Dog Bite offers more music medicine in the form of Tranquilizers. The sophomore release transcends the reverie state of Velvet Changes in pursuit of a darker, more full-bodied experience. Tranquilizers migrates into a dreamy sonic realm enveloped in its own soulful influence. Frontman Phil Jones found his extensive listening to iconic R&B musicians such as Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes to be the original muse for the album. In its formation it began as a soul record; however, at its core the release remains grounded in Dog Bite’s beloved shoegaze landscapes. With the support of Woody Shortridge on bass and Tak Takemura on drums, Dog Bite purposefully evades sedation through its blend of smoky textures across divergent genres. Being an album submerged between the differences of classic funk and rock music, it is Jones’ customary croon that weaves a common mesh in the record’s diverse artistry. In addition to his time with Washed Out, Jones has appeared on a matthewdavid release and produced for Mood Rings and Bosco. As one half of Acid Flashback, he’s crafted tunes for the voice of Karen Jacobs (of Toronto’s Free Kisses). Dog Bite performs live as a four-piece, featuring Jones’ friend Woody Shortridge formerly of defunct Atlanta band Balkans.
Rebekka Karijord – Music for Film and Theatre - Music For Film And Theatre provides a gorgeous, frequently lush experience. It’s one to which KARIJORD herself often accurately applies the label ‘ambient’: within the repetition of tracks like ‘Madrigal’, ‘Salhus’, ‘Migratory Birds’ and ‘Morula’ there’s an undeniable Eno-esque quality, though inevitablyKARIJORD moves in different directions to the godfather of the ambient movement. Elsewhere there are other comparably experimental excursions: the angelic choral vocals and Arvo Pärt violin of ‘Nowhere Home’, the ethereal, mystical ‘The End, and ‘Kjaere Gud’, which conjures up the remarkable ghosts of Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. There are also airier tracks, like the placid, moving yet strangely tense ‘Snö’, the gentle piano strains of ‘Waltz For Norma’, and ‘Anchor Boy’, as delicately melancholic as anything Agnes Obel has delivered.
Mode Moderne – Occult Delight - With the debut of "She, Untamed" today via Noisey, Mode Moderne reveals the first sounds from their imminent new album Occult Delight. Slathered in New Wave and black nail polish, "She, Untamed" delivers the ideal introduction to Mode Moderne's evolutionary journey with producer Joshua Stevenson (Jackie O Motherfucker, Pink Mountain Tops). Stevenson traverses the fusion of Phillip Intilé's torrid vocals and the lush machinery of synths and guitars, cementing Occult Delight as a must-listen for anyone thumbing through their vinyl collection looking for The Smiths or Joy Division as their seasonal depression starts to kick in.
I Break Horses – Chiaroscuro - I BREAK HORSES is the musical project led by Maria Lind?n. From her Stockholm base, the Swedish artist delivered an extraordinary debut album in the shape of 'Hearts', released to much acclaim in August 2011. The latest chapter in I Break Horses' much celebrated songbook is everything fans could wish for and more. In the words of Lind?n: “My only aim when starting to write this album was to ignore any possible second album expectations.” New sonic terrain is compellingly explored by Lind?n, where electronic beats and synth-pop soundscapes replace the more shoegaze based-sound of their debut. The result is a more confident and evolved sound with a more dramatic expression. The title of 'Chiaroscuro' - meaning "light-dark" - serves as the perfect embodiment of Lind?n's sonic creations. Affecting ballads such as 'Heart To Know' and 'You Burn' are wrapped in fragile beauty. 'Denial' and 'Medicine Brush' are sublime synth-pop odysseys, while 'Faith' is a dance anthem complete with hypnotic beats, swirling synths and the mesmerising looped vocals of Lind?n. "I let myself write both the happiest songs but also the saddest, and then I put them together”, states Lind?n. This arrangement of light and dark forms the essence of Chiaroscuro.
HENRY BLACKER - HUNGRY DOGS WILL EAT DIRTY PUDDINGS - In the band's own words...Henry Blacker, Somerset, UK. November 2013, words from: 15 months of toil in a barn, only once told to shut up, decent locals, no Facebook updates – “Rehearsal tonight! YEAH!” – no word to anyone, toiling in peace. What else is there to do in the West Country? (plenty, as it goes, take it easy, for example) A rock band, three piece, two from the group ‘Hey Colossus’ and a brother on the drums, these are the times we thought, let’s: WHOOP AND A HOLLER. Wrote acres of songs, chose 10 to record at Dropout Studio, Camberwell, South London, with Mr.Westminster Brown (Part Chimp man) at the controls, a character from Torche watched on. (FAO Sub Pop fans: ‘Recorded 3rd+4th August, 2013 for £450’.) Picked 8 to be on this here album. Went out for a joyous Chinese in Camberwell, had a beer at a new bar in Peckham, drove home. Played first gig in a Crypt in Bristol, September. This album, the band’s debut, is on Riot Season (Euro) and Learning Curve (U.S), vinyl and download. Out Jan 20th 2014. Straight rockin’.
The Rifles – None the Wiser - On January 20th 2014 The Rifles return with their fourth studio album ‘None the Wiser’, released via Cooking Vinyl. ‘None The Wiser’ finds the four-piece on fine form, and marks yet another raising of the bar, with brilliantly-crafted classic rock, plus an added dose of folk, Americana, a strong pop sensibility and highly-deft songwriting skills. Their trademark Mod sound, rock and roll and timeless indie pop are all present and correct, but the band have also broadened their musical palette, drawing influence from, in their own words, “Bob Dylan, Talking Heads, some Clash and as always - theBeatles.”
Beth Nielsen Chapman – UnCovered - On Beth Nielsen Chapman’s new release, UnCovered, she rolls out a batch of premium songs she’s written but never recorded and that have already been hits or covers by other artists. Most were top ten hits, seven of which topped the charts at #1. This record could have been called “Recovered” except that the idea for this collection sprung out of her digging up songs for her pending boxed set called “Box of Songs”. The title, UnCovered was suggested by none other than broadcasting legend Bob Harris. “Once I heard that name I knew exactly what this record needed to be.” It’s been a crazy few months pulling it together but the universe seems to have been cooperating beautifully. Recorded in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and her own “Tree House” studio in Nashville, Beth Nielsen Chapman’s new release bursts open with a crystalline piano, which gives way into an infectious groove on “Simple Things”, a song about the stuff that really matters in life, with backing vocals by Kim Carnes (She’s Got Betty Davis Eyes). UnCovered features a number of amazing guest artists including legendary guitarist Duane Eddy on “Shine On Me”, a song Bethwrote with Waylon Jennings, which also features backing vocals by Waylon’s widow, artist Jessie Colter; Vince Gill duets withBeth on “Here We Are”, a # 1 hit she and Vince wrote for Alabama; Darrell Scott sings and plays on “Maybe That’s All It Takes” a stunning ballad about how to make love last, which was a hit for Don Williams; Pam Tillis & Lorrie Morgan sing on “Five Minutes” , Lorrie’s first #1 hit.
Marijuana Deathsquads – Oh My Sexy Lord - Marijuana Deathsquads is a gang first, and a band second. The gang has a somewhat unified philosophy on music and the devastating futureMarijuana Wars, but no real dogma of any kind outside of those two areas. And nobody is ever really in or out of the gang. You might be a member of Marijuana Deathsquads. Marijuana Deathsquads is like a porcupine with a soft, rainbow underbelly that tastes like really good pizza if you lick it. To do so requires that you carefully navigate the LSD coated quills pointing every which way that explode in all directions every few minutes. Whoa. That one just hit you in the eyeball. You are going to want to get somebody to take a look at that or it might get infected…. The nuclei of Marijuana Deathsquads is producer Ryan Olson and vocalist Isaac Gale. The rest all speculation mostly. Stef Alexander (P.O.S.) might be in Marijuana Deathsquads. This one time MDS backed him for a performance at Coachella. People seemed to enjoy that. Poliça drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson might be in MDS. Mark McGee might be in MDS. He is super handsome. Har Mar Superstar, Channy Leaneagh of Poliça, Jesus Lizard’s David Yow, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Chavez man Matt Sweeney and many many more have possibly, theoretically, participated in Marijuana Deathsquads at various times.
things that make you feel old 4842133#
Think I've listened to it once a week since it was released.
ex easter island head 'large electric ensemble'
the hidden cameras 'age'
ela orleans 'tumult in clouds' is reissued as well and the few songs i know from that are great
i mean its not a 'great' album, but its much much better than the bloated, embarassing work on their last couple of records.
high 7 for me.
ASMZ hasn't really impressed me in the past, but I really liked the new album. Previous albums seem like they were GYBE!-lite, but this one feels like it distinguishes itself more by being a more aggressive album.
that new I Break Horses album is good.
Get the Blessing - Lope And Antilope
its not to shabby
Any of you lot fancy giving it a spin and a mark out of 10?
