Music You Discovered via DiS in 2012
Then annual thank you thread to give a shout out to the DiSsers and writers who turned you on to (or made you revisit) some tracks, acts or albums this year. Feel free to include links.
For starters, I'd like to thank Jordan Dowling for letting me know about Yppah.
There was also loads if stuff I got into from that ambientish thread http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4347711

Not Stealing Sheep
Seriously, not even an album review for one of 2012's best releases?
I don't think we were sent it
I didn't get any emails from PRs about them.
But this thread isn't for bitching and moaning about that. You must have heard one thing because of this site?
Ps our team reviewed over 700 albums this year
Sorry. (Stands in corner with forlorn expression...)
I hate it when the first response to a thread is negative, but it's just doing my head in that virtually nobody is talking about this album, when it's clearly amazing. Hell, I'll send you a copy if that's all that's standing in the way of getting it reviewed... Would've made an excellent addition to your lost albums of 2012 feature...
An album DiS turned me on to this year? Polica, maybe?
Oh, and um, apparently you did review it...

Might want to get that Search feature up there looked at. (Coughs and leaves room)
PS. It's at least an 8/10.
I reviewed it here...

Plvs Vltra
thanks for the Lillililioliloliolilolloololoaure or whatever and her magical forever updating 2012 playlist. One of the best art pop albums I've heard in some time
Yeah!
Yesiamaduckieduckieduck, glad you like it.
quite a lot from the rolling mongrel and show me the prog threads
durhhh

jimitheexploder et al should take a bow for this, as it's immense and filled with wondrous beaty nonsense.
The prog recommendations thread: http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4202415 thanks to puds and louie for that one.
There was another for heavy stuff that i can't find, wound up listening to a bunch of stuff from that (pop1280 and ting).
Exitmusic
Thanks Sean!
Foreign Fields
<3
Thank you very, very much Teeej
Yeah, I bought Eighty-One after seeing Jordan's thread.
Cracking album.
I did too
brilliant. I forgave him all his Radiohead threads in one scoop after that.
Loads, but specific
Shout out to Sean for When Saints Go Machine early on in the year
I'd like to thank
Whoever wrote the Flying Lotus review and did that interview with him.
And Sean's repeated reminders of Foe.
all the rap I've been listening to is from the Rolling Hip-Hop Thread
and Shipment's Kanye threads, so props for those
John Talabot
Fin is an excellent album.
Also Blondes.
both of those!
i discovered both of those here, both so amazing. so glad i've got them in heavy rotation.
Me too. Love Fin
Still a bit unconvinced by Blondes.
Zelienople
Hectic Zeniths, MSOTT, Chromatics
Hectic Zeniths was mentioned by driftingskeleton on http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4317919
Good instrumental hip hop with original piano pieces. Two great tracks in I Might Drown and Save Me.
Also heard about Motion Sickness Of Time Travel and Chromatics through DiS first.
How rude of me
Thanks driftingskeleton, thanks Sean, thanks DiS.
Stumbleine
BATS
Cloud Nothings and Keaton Henson. Mentioned by various people that I can't remember.
Chromatics, Blondes, Van Etten & DIIV
all in my top records of the year
Christ.
Blondes
Stumbleine
Vessels (made my top 5)
Laurel Halo (had her own thread at some point)
Young Smoke (one of jimi's threads I think)
Well since DIS is my place to go for new music
the list would be huge but the significant ones would be:
Chromatics
Liars
Twin Shadow
Sharon Van Etten
The Irrepressibles
Bill Callaghan
Which I'm very happy about. Cheers.
METZ
Title Fight
Good shout on Metz
and Title Fight
Chrvches
Laurel Halo
Swans
Japandroids
Ukkonen
From either the site or the forums
DiS gave me John Talabot, Bats and lately, Chvrches (who I eagerly await an album from in 2013). DiS also convinced me to give Liars another go; my first full encounter with them had been Sisterworld, which I still find a jarring experience. WIXIW ticked many of the boxes Liars had previously crossed off, somehow.
rather late to the game
Blood Red Shoes.
Love it. Thanks.
big shoutout to SHIPMENT... tirelessly promoting hip hop, really beneficial, cheers.
Loads of good stuff
Swans
Liars
Killer Mike
gonna give one of you this set of records

Can't pinpoint who or where but people talking about A Winged Victory for the Sullen (from last year I know)
lead me to love that album and get into Stars of the Lid, who I saw the other week and absolutely loved. Similarly, I saw Japandroids this year thanks to mentions on here. I get nearly everything from here these days. I don't have enough time or inclination to follow every link, but the good stuff always seems to filter through.
AWFTS still manages to amaze me
I think, in terms of quality, its up there with any SOTL work.
Thank you to those who recommended Sparks by Black Elk to me
Not quite an AOTY but one of my favourite ambient albums this year.
Richard Skelton's Verse of Birds is another, absolutely mesmering, pretty long though so haven't heard it enough yet.
Nosaj Thing - recommended to me due to similarities with FlyLo. Really great, and can't wait for his new album next year. Teebs too.
And I noticed Goat cropping up in a few users' top 5 albums...total sugarush of an album, but I hope they add a litle depth with future releases.
oddly enough, it has to be mclusky and Future of the left.
I absolutely love them now.
I would add to this BLONDES!
Cloud Nothing's album
It's ace too.
Wouldn't have given it a chance otherwise.
Yeah, from the name I assumed they were "chillwave" whatever that is
radiohead
Chromatics
and cloud nothings, thanks.
FOE
Thanks, she's great.
Chvrches
Swans
Daniel Bachman (although that could've been late 2011)
Purity Ring
SALAMANDER
perfume genius
BATS
just loving "The Sleep of Reason". It's highly unlikely I'd have even heard of it if not for DiS, so thanks for that!
Also, Stumbleine.
loads
this was the year I first properly listened to D'angelo
most of it is from the good folk of the rolling hip hip threads and the rolling dance mongrel ones
and maybe the ferware one
(I wish oneforghost still posted)
Shearwater
Think the album was streamed on here for a bit (or at least there was a link to it). Never really bothered with them before, but this turned out to probably be my album of the year, and they've got a great back catalogue that I've enjoyed discovering too.
I lose track of where I've heard of stuff
But doubtless loads comes fom DIS.
Thanks to everyone who's recommended stuff. I love it when people speak passionately and knowledgeably about stuff they love.
Most recently, thanks for finally helping me to realise how amazing Hot Chip are and thanks for the great thread on new Modern Classical stuff, much of which I've been enjoying.
Cardiacs
Which is odd, as it now feels like I've been listening to them forever
