Is there a stand-out 'Does it Look Like I'm Here?', 'Holkham Drones', 'Ravedeath, 1972' of this year, yet?
I'm after something super-lush, and had a few misadventures, so over to you lot...

Likewise the new Julia Holter.
ah yes
been loving those of these, need to pick up finished copies asap
The S/T is very good
Prefer Chinaberry though, which is gorgeous.
the mirrorring record didn't really click with me on first couple of listens but will give it another spin. ta
see, I was thinking *exactly* the same thing
but during a revelatory listen late on Sunday, cycling home, I realised it was all gold.
I love the subtle contrast between the two collaborators.

Really enjoying Gospels too
Reminds me of Bowery Electric a bit.
Can't work out whether it's several songs just sequenced into a couple of tracks though.

I'm loving the KTL record
I don't know, not really that lush, but nowhere near as chilly as their previous stuff.
I totally co-sign Motion Sickness Of Time Travel.

and Trouble Books obv, they are kind of lush
There are some really beautiful and transcendent moments on that Motion Sickness Of Time Travel album. Great album for drifting off inside, going to sleep, relaxing etc.
is this the LP?

Yeah
absolutely loving it.
incredible!!
just ordered the LP
Check out her back catalogue too if you haven't
http://motionsicknessoftimetravel.bandcamp.com/
A Disimbodied Voice In The Dark, Sleeping Through the Veil of the Unconscious and Slow Architecture are particularly good.
Totally - all these are great. Would also add:
'Luminaries & Synastry' and 'White Candle' from last year also (two separate releases but all the tunes come from the same sessions).
Think the new self titled one probably tops the lot though
Tasty stuff.
Interview with her at TMT

Interesting seeing her stuff about lyrics, picking them out.
black swan - aeterna

the Yppah album, bruv
Bersarin Quartett - II
New Jorg Burger/Wolfgang Voigt collab 'Mohn's' pretty excellent

^ dig this one yeah
Me too
Actually bought it yesterday on your recommendation so cheers for that!
This thread is brilliant
I'd only heard Does It Look Like I'm Here and Ravedeath before, discovering loads of new stuff
So far I properly love Holkham Drones (how did I miss this?) and The Idiots Are Winning, still got a lot of listening to do. THANKS GUYS
Holkham Drones is all the better...
...if you've been to Holkham. By far my favourite North Norfolk place to chill out.
Been digging M. Geddes Gengras quite a bit
Had listened to a couple of tapes previously but have gone pretty deep, most probably due to the awesome Sun Araw and Congos collaboration.
His work's pretty varied, ranging from Keith Fullerton Whitman style synth workouts to almost full on noise, but he also does the blissful drone stuff amazingly well. As the OP was looking for Emeralds style drone, would massively recommend these two (think both are actually from late last year rather than this year, but whatever):
- 'Magical Writing' (Peccant Tapes)
This sold out, but available to stream and buy digitally (foe $3) at his bandcamp
http://mgeddesgengras1.bandcamp.com/album/magical-writing
- 'Rebirth Los Angeles' (Full Of Nothing Tapes)
Think there are some of these left:
http://fullofnothing.net/fon23-m-geddes-gengras-rebirth-los-angeles/
Full of Nothing also have a bandcamp for people who don't fancy buying tapes from Russia!
http://digital.fullofnothing.net/album/rebirth-los-angeles
Just read that back and it sort of looks like I might be being snide about Full Of Nothing records simply because they were from Russia
Really didn't want anyone to have that impression. I ordered the tape from them and it came within about a week and not only this, but they threw in some free stuff too, so would totally recommend ordering from them.
Was trying to make light of the fact that ordering a cassette tape from thousands of miles away was quite extreme lengths to go to just to hear an album, but I'm sure loads of people in this thread have done something similar. Apologies to Full of Nothing records and anyone who thought I was being smarmy.
Can this just turn into the rolling thread for this stuff?
High Wolf - Know Thyself
http://highwolf.bandcamp.com/album/know-thyself
Came out on tape on Sun Ark recently. His Atlas Nation album last year was good too
Atlas Nation was amazing
love High Wolf too much.
yep, should def be a rolling thread
i guess the title was more to draw people in, and making it a bit more like 'i play a song, you play the next song' rather than anyone going 'well this is actually an ambient or minimal techno record' if you get what i mean? so glad this thread has taken off.

Homages to ingmar Bergman
Panabrite - http://panabrite.bandcamp.com/
Panabrite's stuff is really lush, pastoral kind of new-age synth mostly.
Attenuated - http://theradiantnow.wordpress.com/2012/05/08/trn-334-attenuated/ - fucking WIDESCREEN drone. Beautiful!
Golden Retriever - http://soundcloud.com/experimedia/golden-retriever-light-cones (only a preview)- More Emeraldsy synth stuff (w/ treated violin I think) that I can't be bothered to try and fail to describe. Super, super good.
Golden Retriever -
love panabrite. do you read the dude's blog
http://lunaratrium.blogspot.de/
?
Yeah man
he posts some really great stuff. The latest post (Frank Gartner) is ace.
for a more dense fuzzy noisy kind of thing
Attenuated - 'Night of Sense' on Foxy Digitalis is fantastic.
Came out at the start of the year
but I really like it -
Drei by Swod
That's the highlight, love that song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=san9kskvshI
For utter lush-ness try the new Worm Ouroboros album Come The Thaw
Lush vocals + Lush guitar = Pure Lush
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NixbHnNv-k
Mount Eerie - Clear Moon
Voices From the Lake - Voices From the Lake
Nadja - Excision (2-Disc, out-of-print vinyl cuts)
Azusa Plane - Where the Sand Turns to Gold (1995 - 2001)
Carter Tutti Void - Transverse
Alog - Unemployed
None of these or the above is exactly 'lush', mind you!
^Azusa Plane
Death of a Microphone from the first cd is propulsive drone (if that's not an oxymoron) in a Yellow Swans sort of way. Great record.
so i've turned the available bits so far into a Spotify playlist sampler
let's keep this thread rolling http://open.spotify.com/user/seaninsound/playlist/5PJq8YoM4KypLOO1HERpQY
You've been busy!
Thanks. :)
The first time I can actually open a spotify link because it is now available in my country
brilliant
I wish I could access this from my country :(
I am a bit biased but of course Trouble Books Concatenating Fields LP has to be up there,
stream here http://barkandhiss.bandcamp.com/album/concatenating-fields
what were yr misadventures? name & shame pls.
you guys might enjoy these (larence english, grant evans/nova scotian arms etc.) ?

Nicholas Szczepanik ~ We Make Life Sad (pay-what-you-like d/l)
http://nszcz.bandcamp.com/releases
While i generally find his art concepts great ('Dear Dad' is a brilliant title for a drone record), i find the artwork/title of this one just a bit erm, mawkish (sorry bud!) but the music itself is great as always.
Gareth Dickson ~ Quite A Way Away (12k)
This is a more of a singer-songwriter record to be honest, but the label affiliations and the way echo is used (esp.) do give it this lush, almost drone-like feel while at the same time being quite anxious & restless. It's a really good record.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNF60BEj6N0
Black to Comm ~ Earth (Digitalis)
More weird, dark & tortured than lush but v. interesting record.
Isengrind, Je Suis le Petit Chevalier, Motion Sickness... been mentioned
Got any darker/noisier/freakier reccomendations?
I miss the ferware thread.
yeah. i'll come back to this this evenig (hopefully) when i have a moment when i'm not eating
...might even start another thread maybe
Looking forward to it
Celer - Evaporate & Wonder
Always worth a punt these two
http://soundcloud.com/experimedia/celer-evaporate-and-wonder-1
Reading only_shallow's monthly article reminded me of this too
Painted Caves - Not Here Not There
http://paintedcave.bandcamp.com/album/not-here-not-there
wow
genuinely haven't heard of 95% of the stuff listed here..... am I killing music?
this CFCF record is a bit bloody lovely
http://soundcloud.com/dummymag-com/sets/cfcf-exercises-ep
Check out d'Eon's stuff if you havent already too
His remix on CFCF's Uno release is lovely
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rS5R_CY9Y54
And his upcoming LP looks good. The tied-in Music for keyboards give-aways were excellent, especially/surprisingly the ruminations on Blink 182.
http://soundcloud.com/hipposintanks/sets/deon-music-for-keyboards-vol-1/
http://soundcloud.com/hipposintanks/sets/deon-music-for-keyboards-vol-2
It’s maybe not exactly what you’re after
But the new Cinematic Orchestra (on Ninja Tune, who are ON FIRE at the moment) is pretty lush in a swooshy bathtime kinda way
I should say, it’s not really Cinematic Orchestra
more a set curated by them, and featuring music by them, along with songs by Austin Peralta (hero) and some others. Dream Work by Dorian Concept and Tom Chant is like Luke Abbott meets Colin Stretson meets <insert composer that influenced Muse> and is amazing.
Weird Ribs - Frontiers http://weirdribs.bandcamp.com/album/frontiers
No love for Windy and Carl - We Will Always Be ?
Also been liking Orcas, Mirrorring, Cupp Cave, bvdub (THREE albums this year at the last count), Atom™. Only listened to The Motion Sickness of Time Travel album the once but need to have a proper sit-down with it...
Windy and Carl - Remember
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03xQMhsXfAQ
Schmidts album is good then?
Haven't had the chance to listen to that yet, the idea of taking on WinterReise seems barmy
Didn't know an awful lot about the artist or the concept.
Just seen his list of aliases - bloody hell.
I really like it on first couple of listens, some beautiful moments, a couple that are a bit off the mark, but generally a good'un.
Orcas
is pretty much the answer to this thread I think.
I really like it
and it made up for the ever-so-slight disappointment of the AWVFTS album (I think I'm the only person who doesn't find it amazing)...
But I'm not sure it's the standout album for me, W&C and bvdub are slaying it in terms of play count...
Olde English Spelling Bee is back!
http://oesbee.blogspot.com/
In their own words: "Hey everyone -- thanks for the patient ears and eyes -- OESB is
getting back into gear -- not high gear yet, but low gear is better than no gear"
Such great news. My favourite label by a country mile 2009-2010, but all they managed to release in 2011 was a free download April Fools's Day 'tribute' to Creed. When the had a 'hurricane sale' at the end of last year, really thought it was the end of the road for them.
First new release is an Alice Cohen LP called 'Pink Keys' which if it's anything like the last one she put out will be awesome. Also coming out on CD which I think is a first for OESB. Hopefully will be the start of another deluge of incredible records that can be discussed at length in this thread...
Yessssssssss!
Mpala Garoo - Ou Du Monde
http://aguirrerecords.bandcamp.com/album/ou-du-monde
Those of you who liked Peaking Lights last year MUST listen to this, it's probably the first 'guitar' album i've listened to this year i've fallen for. Syrupy tropical stuff, sweet like mangos. Aguirre are on such a tip at the minute.
I've got the tape of this
It's the first four tracks on that album. These sound like new vesions of them, or maybe they've been scrubbed up with a bit of a remaster. Been waiting to hear a good deal more from this guy for two years. He;s got a split with Golden Dwarves on Steak Au Zoo that came out this year too.
Do you know other Russian psychy droney people like Sunbells Fenimore (essential if you like this - http://sunbellsfenimore.bandcamp.com/) Twilight Owls, Velvet Breasts, Arabian Horses, Spirit Catapetl, Love Cult - and more a more industrial/dadaist bent; Asian Women on the Telephone.
all great artists.
New tape just out on Aguirre by a Russian drone dude called Black Sky Chants
Hadn't heard of him before but apparently also records as Bedroom Bear too.
Don't really know much about the Russian drone guys but this tape is great. Agree with Mr Gombreak - Aguirre is pretty much the trade mark of quality at the moment
Good call
Enjoying this
this is a list worth checking out
http://www.discogs.com/lists/Ambient-Favourites/3778
Vestals - Forever Falling Towards the Sky
Lisa McGee debut album, cant stop listening. It's almost shoegazey
http://rootstrata.com/release/RS77
Yeah it's really nice, and very shoegaze
Could see a lot of people loving it, but doubt it'll be widely covered.
Does feel a little brief though.
Hope it gets some rep, it's just the kind of thing sean would try create a new genre for
Got the Caminiti LP in the post today, it's the most beautiful thing.
Ah yeah
Night Dust is one of the nicest looking LPs I own. Brilliant record in every sense.
He's got another one coming out on Thrill Jockey in August...got a promo of it the other day, and it's equally brilliant. Really reminds me of Expo 70, it's pretty much full on kosmiche.
oh really?
Might have to see if I can get a hold of that. Wafts of Krautrock and Americana are my vices at the minute, the new one on Fax + 49-69/450464 (http://soundcloud.com/materialobject/pete-namlook-o-material-object) has been supplying the former nicely.
surprised nobody's mentioned the Caretaker record
released in January, 'Patience (After Sebald). intoxicating, as usual.
That Caretaker record is lovely
Did slip out slightly unnoticed at the start of the year though.
Persistent Repetition of Phrases is still the one for me though.
The free extras are really nice too
http://thecaretaker.bandcamp.com/album/extra-patience-after-sebald
This is a brilliant record
Kelippah/Decimus have a bandcamp page too, can check/buy it here:
http://decimus.bandcamp.com/album/raajmahal
Worth getting the LP though cos it looks fantastic. The new NNCK LP on the same label is definitely worth checking out too.
no one's mentioned John Talabot's album?
Carter Tutti Void is the obvious answer
No UFO's - Soft Coast is also frippin great
Saitam - West-East
on soundcloud, give it a go http://soundcloud.com/iamsaitam
No UFO's has just put a new tape out and it's quality
http://www.niceupintl.com/releases/nu003.html
Only 80 copies though
Nothing But Noise - Not Bleeding Red
This is stunning Tangerine Dream type stuff. Cinematic and plenty of depth to explore. http://boomkat.com/downloads/512455-nothing-but-noise-not-bleeding-red
Uton - Echoes In The Wonderland / Kun Korallit Puhuvat Pilville
http://uton.bandcamp.com/album/echoes-in-the-wonderland
http://uton.bandcamp.com/album/kun-korallit-puhuvat-pilville
LP and cassette/cdr. All tracks from the same sessions. One of the best things he's done and that's really saying something. Both still available from Ikuisuus records:
http://www.ikuisuus.net/index1.htm
Uton's bandcamp is a goldmine too - 20 plus LPs (originally out as tapes/cdrs on labels like Digitalis, Students of Decay, Housecraft, Sloow etc) the vast majority for either free or pay what you like download
Knox-Om-Pax - Regional Surrealism
http://www.planet.mu/discography/ZIQ323
White Rainbow

E-N - Already Gone
Is really good.
Awesome thread...
Just got to find the time to plough through all the links.
Can I throw the VCMG album in to the mix? Some sublime moments on that.
Birdcatcher - Trees
Picked up on a recommendation from Volcanic Tongue. Double cassette.
If you like the heavier end of Barn Owl and Expo '70 then this is pretty much perfect. Two hours of heavy amplifier worship. Couple of guys on banjo and lap steel guitar (!) apparently, but you'd never know. Lot of pedals and a bit of tape manipulation too by the sound of things. Only listened all the way through once so far but it's already one of my favourite things this year
Two more Aristocrat P. Child Presents (Sun Araw) Mixes / Edits
'All Your Heart' and 'Looks Like Telephones'
http://www.sunaraw.com/main.html
Very similar to the stuff on the 'Sun Ark Edit Bay #1' tape that came out earlier this year.
His Duppy Gun thing is out now too, and rules

Inez Lightfoot
http://inezlightfoot.bandcamp.com/album/three-weaving-at-the-well
http://inezlightfoot.bandcamp.com/album/familiars
definitely one to watch, I got her 'Pollen On The Brow' cassette last year and it's a really dusky folky sort of drone built up into these worldspaces of lyrical music and sound and field recordings, a bit like how Julia Holter crafts her releases. Debut LP 'Familiars' will be out on Digitalis soon.

Amazing digital compilation - 'Music For Tom Carter'
All proceeds going to help Tom Carter pay for additional medical treatment in the US after his very serious bout of pneumonia earlier this year.
Just look at the line up!
http://musicfortomcarter.bandcamp.com/album/music-for-tom-carter
brilliant thread
working my way through it, cheers everyone
William Basinski - Disintergration Loops
Surprised this wasn't mentioned before http://open.spotify.com/album/0YKbsWqsHFMHbPVpgG12Ru
Looks like it's actually from 2002
not 2012 like Spotify claims
It was released 10 years ago, probably why...
Just had a fancy reissue in a mega expensive box set this year.
you *must* have already known this existed
something about any hack worth his salt.
:)
exported the spotify playlist to RDIO
in case any of you prefer that http://rd.io/x/QNcAL1Wqlg
Severant by Kuedo maybe ?
what a beautiful album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGjm61lZ2W8
Came out last year I'm affraid
Its amazingthough, you're right I still play it heavily. Saw him play at a festival ealier in the summer too he was brilliant.
whoops
i saw the october release date and assumed it was this year. Great stuff nonetheless
CTRL-F Brian Eno
No? Well, he's coming out with a new ambient-only record in a few weeks. I'm very excited! (to be lulled!)
what do people make of 'Luxury Problems'?
it's not the knockout I was hoping for - lost a lot of the strangeness of last years EPs - but it's still pretty good.
pretty much sums it up perfectly
it's okay.
dunno if it fits here, but
solar maximum by majeure currently has my head bopping
lots of good synth and proggy drums
http://open.spotify.com/album/4yxXQxoUiy9jBGqj0nrDqT
Andy Stott's 'Luxury Problems'
seems to be scratching that itch for me at the moment.
Paul Corley - Disquiet
Came out on Bedroom Community a few weeks ago and it's full of all kinds of lovely found sounds, electronics, clicks, whirrs, drones, prepared piano, etc. Well worth checking out.
http://open.spotify.com/album/4jwBPchWe7FSm6P1ki9vN6
just want to rep for 1973 (that's the album title) by Seirom
people posting itt should be loving this bad boy. you can listen here: http://auroraborealisrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/seirom-1973
annoyed that I ended up just giving it a diddy review in Terrorizer where pretty much no-one reading is going to care; I could have waffled about it on here or somewhere and caused maybe two people to care. it's been totally slept on but I love it
It was your Terrorizer review?
Stood out enough for me to care about it, so that's halfway to your grand aims.
It really is impressively excellent.
maybe Luke Abbott is the new Luke Abbott?
http://drownedinsound.com/news/4145814-ep-stream-luke-abbott-object-is-a-navigator
je suis le petit chevalier
http://jesuislepetitchevalier.bandcamp.com/
multiple releases from this year (and last) and they are basically all on the psychedelic droney kind of thing. their output's pretty similar to that of motion sickness of time travel
Lichens - Litio Folk
Very limited edition vinyl, also available as DD - https://soundcloud.com/experimedia/lichens-litio-folk-album - entirely made of vocal samples, spellbinding from start to finish.
Anything missing from this thread?
Braids ft Max Cooper?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WnYHGnIlg4
or vice versa..
New Talvihorros maybe?
http://www.talvihorros.com/
I think Brassica has a new EP out too, but I can't find it at the mo.
Scape
the Brian Eno app.
Has anyone here used/played it? It is amazing. You can make your own Does It Look Like I'm Here and it will never be quite the same twice. Hard to really explain how cool it is, you just have to start using it.
It's brilliant
And you can generate your own Not Not Fun album cover at the same time.
zing!
I really do like it.
Have you used Drone FX? Great for making Stars of the Lid kind of ambience. It can be used as a generative app or you can play the instruments yourself.
A Closer listen's top ten ambient albums:
http://acloserlisten.com/2012/12/17/acl-2012-top-ten-ambient/
Their whole end of feature is great overall.
