Theyre pretty much exactly where they'd be expected to be on the bill - Two top ten albums (the other still going top 20) and a fairly large and dedicated teenage fanbase that normally are the R&L target demographic. Though I'm pretty sure theyve now been booked to play every year for six or seven years (bar 2008).
are they THAT big?
(genuine question)
Some good acts there though - The Cure, Paramore (alright - fuck off, i like 'em), ATD-I, Justice, Horrors, Mystery Jets and The Shins.
I think I missed the moment they changed from being a band only Uncut and Mojo wrote about, to being second from top on the main stage at Reading. Fucking hell. I admit times have changed, but the first time I went, Deftones, Limp Bizkit and Slipknot played AT THE PEAK OF NU METAL and none of them were even as high as third on the bill.
But even then, there were a couple of bands I still wanted to see (not just ATDI). Plus there were loads I hadn't heard, whereas this time the only one i can see myself getting into that I haven't heard is Black Keys. Plus, I'd like to spend some of my time on the main stage, where it has that magic (I was blown away by Pulp last year).
Melvin... c'mon.
And while it might not be the most conspicuous of bill ordering matters, I didn't think Two Door Cinema Club would place above The Horrors.
I'm just thinking along the lines that they've been on the go for longer and they're more 'critically respected' (horrible phrasing, I know), but these things don't play a significant part in deciding festival bills.
Only because i'm terribly desperate to see The Cure. Bonus arrives in the form of Crystal Castles and Cancer Bats, but is it really worth £95(inc fees) for a day pass?
That's a lot of money for a pretty average looking bill. And you know you'll need at least a ton to spend while you're there. Plus travel costs. Wonder how fast it'll sell out when kids just can't afford to drop that kind of cash.
that the Cure charged over £100 per ticket at the Royal Albert Hall gig; and ATP i'll be your mirror is £160 for seeing a load of people who were £8.50 a gig back in their day; then is £200 really excessive for three days at Reading? If you liked the bands, then it is probably not a bad deal against the price you'd pay for individual gigs.
It cost me £55 for Reading in 1991. To see prices increase four-fold over the following two decades surely isn't out of the ordinary?
Put it another way - see that person wearing a Superdry jacket, jeans and trainers? I bet that cost £200 in total?
Reading and Leeds combined sell about 160,000. And yes, a four-fold increase over 2 decades is fucking ridiculous. A weekend ticket in 1996 cost £60; if their prices rose in line with inflation, they'd be £90 now.
and the capacity is much higher now than it was then. I imagine (hope?) the site layout has been improved but the last times I went (2007 for the weekend, 2008 for the day) it was overcrowded and really unpleasant.
I don't think you can completely justify cost based purely on how much it is to see bands individually. It's a festival, which means shorter sets, poor sound and expensive food/drink - so unless your cramming bands in every day to extract maximum value (which is alway tough and tiring) it feels like a lot of money.
Price also has a bearing on the demographics of attendees
The NME Tent was pretty unrammed for Faith No More at Reading, wasn't it? We were somewhere in the middle and surprised that it wasn't busier given that Kings Of Nothing were moaning on the Main Stage.
I've gone to Leeds every year (excluding last year) since 2007, and decided with a couple of mates to get tickets as a spur of the moment sort of thing last night. Not really sure how it happened to be honest, and I hadn't even seen the lineup...
As it stands, the lineup is quite good in a R/L way... I've not seen any of the headliners, and whilst I'm not a particular fan of Foo Fighters or Kasabian, I might give them a go. Very excited about the Cure too.
The fact is, all the good stuff won't be announced till nearer the time. Hoping for some Los Campesinos/Johnny Foreigner type goodness.
It was about 80 back in my day, and that seemed a lot. I can only imagine the amount I would hate the dickhead free hugs / setting fire to stuff / jackass people these days, I barely tolerated it as a wacky 17 year old.
That Bullet For My Valentine are playing directly before the Kaiser Cheifs on the main stage? Lol at metalheads probably getting stuck at the front for I Predict A Riot, particularly as I can imagine many will want to be at the front for Foos as opposed to justice (lol) too.
One of the funniest sights of Reading 2006 was watching hordes of people running away from Kaiser Chiefs on the Main Stage. Admittedly it had started raining lightly, but...
might be a shout to get one off Viagogo. Got mine last year for £50 cheaper than the standard price and postage was good. Might not be the same for everyone and I mightve struck lucky but yeah, have a look
Bombay Bicycle Club and The Vaccines are third-headlining
excuse me wut
They're really big live following/Reading archetype bands, BBC especially at the moment
Bet they get a good deal more watching than the Black Keys.
AT THE DRIVE IN THO GODDAMNIT
The Kaiser Chiefs...
must have some very incriminating photos of Melvin Benn.
oh wow...
:D
Enter Shikari must have photos of Melvin Benn fucking a donkey or some shit
Seriously.
In complete fairness
Theyre pretty much exactly where they'd be expected to be on the bill - Two top ten albums (the other still going top 20) and a fairly large and dedicated teenage fanbase that normally are the R&L target demographic. Though I'm pretty sure theyve now been booked to play every year for six or seven years (bar 2008).
Foster The People second top of the second stage
Wut?
hm?
Didn't they headline a second stage at Coachella a year or two ago?
I don't get it like, they're turbo gash.
do day tickets usually sell out quickly?
I might get one for the Sunday when I have some money
Not particularly I don't think
black keys 2nd to last on main stage?
are they THAT big?
(genuine question)
Some good acts there though - The Cure, Paramore (alright - fuck off, i like 'em), ATD-I, Justice, Horrors, Mystery Jets and The Shins.
Black Keys
I think I missed the moment they changed from being a band only Uncut and Mojo wrote about, to being second from top on the main stage at Reading. Fucking hell. I admit times have changed, but the first time I went, Deftones, Limp Bizkit and Slipknot played AT THE PEAK OF NU METAL and none of them were even as high as third on the bill.
the
black keys sold out 3 nights at alexandra palace recently. So they are big enough to play second from top.
They did an
arena tour earlier in the year and sold out Alexandra Palace for 3 nights. I couldn't name a song of theirs if you stuck a gun to my head.
Just in case you do ever get held at gunpoint by a redneck rock fan
They have a song called "Set You Free". Don't want nobody getting shot now. It isn't a cover of the N-Trance dance classic, unfortunately.
Wish that ATD-I were second from headline billing on the
same day that The Cure headline the mainstage, but you can't have it all.
Other than them, I only really care about The Shins on the Saturday.
Hmmm...is £80 (or whatever it is these days) worth it to see ATD-I headline plus The Shins and a few other decent acts? Yes, most probably.
I haven't been to Reading since 2004. Do they have that Concrete Jungle punk/hardcore stage on the Saturday? That would make it even better.
the main stage sounds shit though
The radio one tent is now enormous and has much better sound.
Yes, they still have the lockup stage on the Saturday, last year, which I assume will be the same as this, the dance was on the Friday
Good stuff, will sort a ticket then as soon as the website stops crashing!
i have made assumptions there
Check that it is on the same day!
Bit of a crap lineup all in all
everyone says this early doors
this one is stronger than most early on.
all the DiS faves will be on the smaller stages, and lower down the bill, etc...
True, I went for the first time last, without looking at the lineup since all my mates were going on a post A-level bash
Full bill and poster

Amazed we haven't had any outrage yet over the price...
looks like I'll be laying out £85 to see ATD-I.
I remember going in 1994 when it was £52.50 for a WEEKEND pass and you could buy a can of Coke from a vending machine for just 25p.
Halcyon days.
Why don't you just go to
Brixton?
Are they playing Brixton?
I'd really like to see ATD-I but don't want to fork out 80 quid!
Odd Future, followed by The Shins, followed by Enter Shikari
:D
Enter Shikari and The Vaccines above The Shins?
Melvin... c'mon.
And while it might not be the most conspicuous of bill ordering matters, I didn't think Two Door Cinema Club would place above The Horrors.
well
I'm amazed justice are above 2 door. 2 door are big nowadays
The Shins aren't that well known in Britain
Yeah, that's true.
I'm just thinking along the lines that they've been on the go for longer and they're more 'critically respected' (horrible phrasing, I know), but these things don't play a significant part in deciding festival bills.
it's happening in Leeds as well this year
yes, but coming, as i do, from Reading, it's bad enough that i am forced to consider this location each year,
No northerners in here
please.
Saturday at Leeds is interesting me.
Only because i'm terribly desperate to see The Cure. Bonus arrives in the form of Crystal Castles and Cancer Bats, but is it really worth £95(inc fees) for a day pass?
If Cancer Bats also end up playing the hardcore stage
Then I would be tempted to suggest yes, Alexisonfire did 2 sets a few years ago, and The Bronx played as both bands
I love CB, but in a tiny sweaty tent would be so much better than the main stage.
£200 for a weekend ticket
That's a lot of money for a pretty average looking bill. And you know you'll need at least a ton to spend while you're there. Plus travel costs. Wonder how fast it'll sell out when kids just can't afford to drop that kind of cash.
£205! Fuck off!!!!
given
that the Cure charged over £100 per ticket at the Royal Albert Hall gig; and ATP i'll be your mirror is £160 for seeing a load of people who were £8.50 a gig back in their day; then is £200 really excessive for three days at Reading? Put it another way - see that person wearing a Superdry jacket, jeans and trainers? I bet that cost £200 in total?
Yeah, except ATP sell about 5,000 tickets per event
Reading and Leeds combined sell about 160,000. And yes, a four-fold increase over 2 decades is fucking ridiculous. A weekend ticket in 1996 cost £60; if their prices rose in line with inflation, they'd be £90 now.
it was £90/weekend when I first went in 2000
and the capacity is much higher now than it was then. I imagine (hope?) the site layout has been improved but the last times I went (2007 for the weekend, 2008 for the day) it was overcrowded and really unpleasant.
*£80
That's RAH though.
I don't think you can completely justify cost based purely on how much it is to see bands individually. :DD
What has Superdry clothing got to do with anything?
Got my £40 vip Leeds tickets last week.
One of the perks of living a mile away from the site. :)
surely thats the only perk of living in Leeds?
ATDI vs Kasabian
That tent is going to be fucking rammed. Well, in theory anyway.
just like it was for Faith No More
when they clashed with Kings Of Leon? plus it's even bigger now than it was then. it will be busy, but the line up is very mainstream indie so far.
I don't reckon it will be that busy
ATD-I are ace, but they might not be on the radar of people whose age was in single figures when they were last a going concern?
I do think though that the dance tent will be rammed for Metronomy at the same time, which is what I'll be aiming to see.
Metrononmy at the same time as ATD-I
...bullcrap.
Easy like a Friday evening
The NME Tent was pretty unrammed for Faith No More at Reading, wasn't it? We were somewhere in the middle and surprised that it wasn't busier given that Kings Of Nothing were moaning on the Main Stage.
As usual with Reading there are plenty of bands I'd like to see but not enough to make me want to go
I might well get a day ticket for ATD-I though and lament the fact that Paramore aren't playing the same day :(
You can imagine the thread on here that night, can't you?
The BBC are so shit, stop showing Kasabian etc etc
ENJOY PENDULUM AT READING, PRICK
FREE HUGS! SHABS! BANTS!
Perhaps someone will actually be seriously injured/die when one of those scum throws a camping gas canister onto a burning tent this year. LOLZ.
...this festival is a repository for some of the worst people in Britain these days...
wow
last year was shockingly calm
Granted it does have some utter idiots though.
So I have a ticket to the Northern version
I've gone to Leeds every year (excluding last year) since 2007, and decided with a couple of mates to get tickets as a spur of the moment sort of thing last night. Not really sure how it happened to be honest, and I hadn't even seen the lineup...

Also
Terrified I might have got convinced to go along by the "free beer and burger" ploy.
Doh...
Shit monks
I was considering buying a couple of tickets for me and a mate and then flogging them if we didn't fancy it in the end, but £200? Get real.
200 fucking quid?
It was about 80 back in my day, and that seemed a lot. I can only imagine the amount I would hate the dickhead free hugs / setting fire to stuff / jackass people these days, I barely tolerated it as a wacky 17 year old.
Does anyone else find it absolutely hilarious
That Bullet For My Valentine are playing directly before the Kaiser Cheifs on the main stage? Lol at metalheads probably getting stuck at the front for I Predict A Riot, particularly as I can imagine many will want to be at the front for Foos as opposed to justice (lol) too.
yes i find it hilarious that BFMV are given credence as a metal band
* a band
That's traditional rock day too
That appears more to be the Friday this year, except Bombay Bicycle Club are playing in the same bill position as the Kaisers there.
What day is the dance stage on?
ANYONE?
The Kasabian day.
Lethal Drizzle
Kaiser Bloody Chiefs... What a crock.
One of the funniest sights of Reading 2006 was watching hordes of people running away from Kaiser Chiefs on the Main Stage. Admittedly it had started raining lightly, but...
No biffy clyro....
or Feeder who are putting out a new album....wuzzup w/ that?
bummer
biffy
will be back to headline 2013
if people are getting weekend tickets
might be a shout to get one off Viagogo. Got mine last year for £50 cheaper than the standard price and postage was good. Might not be the same for everyone and I mightve struck lucky but yeah, have a look
it's a pretty good line-up but not the best i've seen
would really like at the drive-in to announce a UK tour then i won't feel bad if i don't go to reading
