Theyre pretty much exactly where they'd be expected to be on the bill - Two top ten albums (the other still going top 20) and a fairly large and dedicated teenage fanbase that normally are the R&L target demographic. Though I'm pretty sure theyve now been booked to play every year for six or seven years (bar 2008).

Some good acts there though - The Cure, Paramore (alright - fuck off, i like 'em), ATD-I, Justice, Horrors, Mystery Jets and The Shins.

I think I missed the moment they changed from being a band only Uncut and Mojo wrote about, to being second from top on the main stage at Reading. Fucking hell. I admit times have changed, but the first time I went, Deftones, Limp Bizkit and Slipknot played AT THE PEAK OF NU METAL and none of them were even as high as third on the bill.

black keys sold out 3 nights at alexandra palace recently. So they are big enough to play second from top.
They did an
arena tour earlier in the year and sold out Alexandra Palace for 3 nights. I couldn't name a song of theirs if you stuck a gun to my head.

Wish that ATD-I were second from headline billing on the
same day that The Cure headline the mainstage, but you can't have it all.
Other than them, I only really care about The Shins on the Saturday.
Hmmm...is £80 (or whatever it is these days) worth it to see ATD-I headline plus The Shins and a few other decent acts? Yes, most probably.
I haven't been to Reading since 2004. Do they have that Concrete Jungle punk/hardcore stage on the Saturday? That would make it even better.

True, I went for the first time last, without looking at the lineup since all my mates were going on a post A-level bash
But even then, there were a couple of bands I still wanted to see (not just ATDI). Plus there were loads I hadn't heard, whereas this time the only one i can see myself getting into that I haven't heard is Black Keys. Plus, I'd like to spend some of my time on the main stage, where it has that magic (I was blown away by Pulp last year).

I'm just thinking along the lines that they've been on the go for longer and they're more 'critically respected' (horrible phrasing, I know), but these things don't play a significant part in deciding festival bills.

Only because i'm terribly desperate to see The Cure. Bonus arrives in the form of Crystal Castles and Cancer Bats, but is it really worth £95(inc fees) for a day pass?

Then I would be tempted to suggest yes, Alexisonfire did 2 sets a few years ago, and The Bronx played as both bands

That's a lot of money for a pretty average looking bill. And you know you'll need at least a ton to spend while you're there. Plus travel costs. Wonder how fast it'll sell out when kids just can't afford to drop that kind of cash.

If you liked the bands, then it is probably not a bad deal against the price you'd pay for individual gigs.
It cost me £55 for Reading in 1991. To see prices increase four-fold over the following two decades surely isn't out of the ordinary?

Reading and Leeds combined sell about 160,000. And yes, a four-fold increase over 2 decades is fucking ridiculous. A weekend ticket in 1996 cost £60; if their prices rose in line with inflation, they'd be £90 now.
it was £90/weekend when I first went in 2000
and the capacity is much higher now than it was then. I imagine (hope?) the site layout has been improved but the last times I went (2007 for the weekend, 2008 for the day) it was overcrowded and really unpleasant.

I don't think you can completely justify cost based purely on how much it is to see bands individually. It's a festival, which means shorter sets, poor sound and expensive food/drink - so unless your cramming bands in every day to extract maximum value (which is alway tough and tiring) it feels like a lot of money.
Price also has a bearing on the demographics of attendees

The NME Tent was pretty unrammed for Faith No More at Reading, wasn't it? We were somewhere in the middle and surprised that it wasn't busier given that Kings Of Nothing were moaning on the Main Stage.
As usual with Reading there are plenty of bands I'd like to see but not enough to make me want to go
I might well get a day ticket for ATD-I though and lament the fact that Paramore aren't playing the same day :(

I've gone to Leeds every year (excluding last year) since 2007, and decided with a couple of mates to get tickets as a spur of the moment sort of thing last night. Not really sure how it happened to be honest, and I hadn't even seen the lineup...
As it stands, the lineup is quite good in a R/L way... I've not seen any of the headliners, and whilst I'm not a particular fan of Foo Fighters or Kasabian, I might give them a go. Very excited about the Cure too.
The fact is, all the good stuff won't be announced till nearer the time. Hoping for some Los Campesinos/Johnny Foreigner type goodness.
