Statto: Things you've been surprised by in the DiSser votes for LP of the year
There are still three weeks of voting to go over here http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4312130 so hopefully this won't cause any spoilers.
No votes for Esben & the Witch and Anna Calvi? Anything else you thought people would really like that has zero votes?
Despite the anti-hype and general sense of disappointment, a fair few people seem to like James Blake and M83.
13 people so far agree with me that Bright Eyes has made one of the five finest albums of the year.
Only 3 people agree with me that When Saints Go Machine have made one of the albums of the year (makes me wonder if the rest of you have actually heard it! Might have to make it my pick for Lost 11...)
3 people have Nicola Roberts in their lists (I salute you!)
There are several votes for How to Dress Well - so shall we class this as a 2012 release then? (will have to do DiS' top 75 if so)
Wild Beasts have double the votes of Metronomy.
Antlers have nearly 3 times the number of votes as Radiohead.
not a single vote for Lulu
The number of people who signed up to make really shit lists
what's the point?
Although fwiw i guess i hate about 90% of indie stuff released this year maybe that's why
seriously that bright eyes record is utter, utter shite of like... real cow shit proportions. And so are the James Blake and SBTRKT albums. Don't care what anyone says, they're just indie albums. Really shit ones. Not even gonna bother listening to the M83 one cos i know it'll be shit. The Metronomy album provokes no emotion in me whatsoever. I guess it's the best one of the lot then really.
Oh i suppose Antlers album is good. Nothing more though. Definitely not anywhere near album of the year.
Is Destroyer indie? I can't really tell. That record's ace though well done Destroyer.
Destoyer album is indie
Do you just not want it to be because you like it?
I don't really care either way
there's just some bits which aren't that indie, but that i'm not qualified to accurately describe cos i generally don't listen to the type of music that it's similar to.
Stuff like savage night at the opera is definitely, but not really sure about something like suicide demo for... can't remember who its for.
Kara Walker
But it just seems, at this time of year, all the people who view "Indie" as some kind of wimpish, easy to categorize genre come crawling out. Its bollocks
smaaaaaaaaack
Calm down pal.
...so what do you like?
I still really rate that Esben and the Witch record...
Definitely in my top 15 of 2011.
I liked it when it came out, which seems a long time ago
but I haven't gone back to it over the course of a strong year.
Can't help thinking that it would be in more of those lists if it had been released in September rather than January.
Only heard them for the first time the other day
The Hexagons EP is pretty cool. Would like to catch them live at some point.
I'd possibly say that they're better live than on record.
Saw them at St Philip's Church in Salford earlier this year...excellent!
yep
a lot of October releases doing really well for this reason, perhaps...
More than anything....
suprised that there are no really "consistent" top favorite. Usually there are at least 1 or 2 serious standouts.
i dunno
a third of people seem to like Antlers, and nearly as many like Peej (not many people seem to like both!)
The prevalence of the Metronomy album
But probably only because i don't like it. So it would always sunrise me. Poor posting.
Couple of votes for Youth Lagoon
Good little album, didn't think anyone else had heard it
i tried and failed to review that
it opens really well and on their own, most of the tracks are good but as a whole, it's too samey, like an stewed cup of tea.
should be a review of it up this week (only came out in the UK the other week)
Nothing, really
The shocking absence of Viva Brother from the list
;-)
