The Riots
:(
Hope this doesn't effect the release of the new Mogwai EP.
*affect
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD...
...not the new MOGWAI EP.
Alright looters, this time it's personal.
just getting some more info
but PIAS and Sony DADC look after loads of labels (including DiS) - list of the bigger ones including XL, Domino, etc here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PIAS_UK_Distribution
if you want to see the devastation, here's some video footage of it burning http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14454359
i would imagine all the labels are insured and wotnot but i'm wondering if there's anything positive and useful we could all do to help?
@mr_trick I'm getting quoted a lot so want to reiterate: we know DADC was destroyed & are waiting to confirm exactly how badly this has affected PIAS.
http://twitter.com/#!/mr_trick/status/100842986996367361
oh fuck off
I detect sarcasm.
He's previously opined about how scummy illegit DLers are.
I'm pretty sure he knows such, um, subtelty(?) would go unnoticed and will chalk this one up as another win for his tactics of saying something daft that people nonetheless do come out with, and which gets slammed down.
Win-win-win for him. Div ideas get a slamming. 'Right-ons' (with whom he agrees with on this issue, but with whom he wished to differentiate himself from, lest he get too friendly with the Lefties) get into a tizz. His 'cause' (people should respect music artists) gets support.
Forever_Machiavellian.
Ah.
He's actually explained himself this time.
Feels strongly enough about this to not want to be misunderstood by people 'onm his side'. Hmmm. Interesting.

This is an utter disaster
I'd say about 20, 30% of all the bigger independent record labels are distributed by PIAS. Rough Trade, Domino, Soul Jazz, Big Dada/Ninja, Chemikal Underground etc etc.
Shitting hell.
sad news
I hope they can pull through ok!
Hope this doesn't effect the release of the new Mogwai EP.
London riots continue - release of new Mogwai EP delayed
Aaggh this damn forum
London riots continue - release of new Mogwai EP delayed
Oh for fuck's sake
Forget it.
just don't use speech marks
we still can't work out what is causing this bug to fix it
Yeah, I know
I just really like Mogwai.
Me too
just imagining if the mainstream media shared our concerns :)
bit more info

what can we do to help?
Some people suggesting purchasing records digitally by the affected labels.
I might buy a heap of stuff and give it away, to encourage others to support labels? Would that be logical?
Certainly all helps
I'd say
could
put together a 'best of' compilation playlist with purchasing links for the whole set?
yeah, that's what I was thinking
greatest hits sort of thing? which stores give labels the biggest cut?
Bleep might be a good one
seeing as its run by Warp, or is it now independent?
Boomkat sell a lot of PIAS things too I'm sure
I think that list is out of date...
I can think of at least two other labels distributed by PIAS - Dummy and Basick.
use whoever
recordstore, rough trade, norman, boomkat hell even amazon, play, hmv. just keep buying the music as you were!
NEWS UPDATE
Dear all
Many of you will now be aware that Sony DADC in Enfield has been affected by the continuing riots.
Please be aware that despite reports circulating, it is only SONY DADC that has been burnt out and not PIAS. Pias are exploring a number of initiatives to mitigate the effect of the events at Sony DADC and will put out a statement later on.
They are obviously working to get their service back up and running asap in relation to key lines and new releases and Sony DADC have a recovery emergency plan that is being put in place. This could include help from other distributors which has been offered.
Of course our thoughts and best wishes have to go out to the many smaller labels and artists who have lost much of their stock and face considerable challenges to re-stock and carry on their business.
Kind Regards
This does affect PIAS labels. This is the email I got from my label manager at PIAS
Dear All
Please see below for a message from our distribution centre, Sony DADC in Enfield. There has been a massive fire and the likelihood is that all stock is lost. More information as we get it.
As soon as we have news of Sony DADC's emergency plans and how we will get back on track we will let everyone know
Many thanks

Please be advised that there has been a serious incident at our DC in Enfield.

Further details to follow.
SONY DADC STATEMENT
Dear all
Many of you will now be aware that Sony DADC in Enfield has been affected by the continuing riots.

can everyone also think about how the record shops are going to cope?
Not discounting this terrible news for independent labels and their acts, we should also reach out to the businesses PIAS distribute to have to weather through this. All the independent shops who don't have an online store will have had their lifeline to a vast amount of stock temporarily shut down...
^this so much
PIAS/Sony DADC are our main distributor, we were massively lucky enough to receive a huge order from them yesterday which must have been one of the last to leave the warehouse.
Downloading/buying direct is not really the answer - think about how much more business distributors receive from shops rather than individuals!
#labellove
this is a small idea but why not tweet one of your favourite labels and thank them for releasing a record that has improved your life. or share a link to encourage your friends to support the label that means a lot to you.
i realise this won't change anything but it might brighten a few people's days who've lost all their stock and it may be a good turn to a tragedy into something positive by getting people into people onto some great music.
:) i like this
Dear Sean,
That first Redjetson album was REALLY, REALLY good.
Cheers,
Jordan.
Yeah
Hi Sean
Thanks for that Metric album what you done did release.
#labellove from AndyV.
what happened to me comment?
PIAS have released a short statement
http://drownedinsound.com/news/4143302-indie-label-distributor-pias-release-short-statement-regarding-fire-at-sonydadc-warehouse
I really hope the labels and shops affected can pull through.
Memphis Industries tweet
So all the stock we got left is sitting in our office. Devastated is the word.
Statement from Chemical Underground:
The destruction of the SONY/DADC warehouse in Enfield last night and with it, the stock belonging to dozens of great independent labels distributed by PIAS UK, represents a sad and frustratingly bitter blow to the music industry at a time when it can least afford it.
While we’ve lost a considerable chunk of our own back catalogue in addition to stock of our more recent titles, the repercussions of last night’s events will be felt by all labels and retailers up and down the country for months to come. We also have enormous sympathy for PIAS itself: a wonderful independent distributor and an unfailingly supportive partner for Chemikal Underground over the last twelve years.
Quantifying the financial impact this will have on labels will take time but one thing is becoming abundantly clear: the suggestion that people no longer value music or those who endeavour to make it is myth; the collective support and sympathy being offered online for artists and labels demonstrates that we have a uniquely passionate and proactive community of music fans throughout the UK and it’s this passion and support that can, and will, ultimately, sustain the labels currently under threat.
From Chemikal Underground’s point of view, we’d like to thank everyone who has got in touch to show their support, it means a lot. In terms of what you can do to help we suggest you scan the list of PIAS distributed labels listed below and purchase one of their albums. A small thing? Yes, but under the circumstances, the innocuous act of purchasing an album becomes a potent symbol of solidarity for independent music.

You Are Here
Alun, Emma, Paul and Stewart.
You can
Buy records / CD's / Downloads directly from the labels site as they will have there own stock.
The Ninja Tune shop which also includes Big Dad / Brainfeeder is incredibly cheap always. I just bought a bunch of stuff.
Not the best idea
because PIAS is more deeply effected by this than most of the labels. Buy your music as you normally would, so PIAS continues to get our support as well. There is plenty of stock they already have at music stores. Buying music directly would be cutting the life line to PIAS, and anyone suggesting to do so should be questioned of their intent in telling people this. THINK about it.
so wait
stock from PIAS labels *was* destroyed?
what was that statement they put out all about then?
the confusion is because
some people thought the PIAS offices burned down but they did not.
I don't get this
so all the stock was uninsured? Because everyone on twitter is going "the labels have lost EVERYTHING" etc etc. But SURELY it's insured??
maybe
but a lot of smaller labels live month-to-month, and if they can't send out stock while they wait for insurance to come through it might kill them.
plus you have press things in runs not individually
money upfront for the a print run that may take years to sell. alright if you just have to do them as theyre released, not so good when you have to repress your entire back catalogue.
Nearly every insurance policy
from travel, household contents to building insurance excludes cover for "war, riot and acts of god". I would be amazed if they receive any compensation.
I'm sure it was insured
As I understand it* the problem would likely be that in the period that it takes for the insurance to get turned around (probably a few months) that the labels won't have the income from the sale of the albums that would have been in stock. I'm not sure but suspect that many insurance policies don't cover lost profits in the period until the insurance payment comes in again.
And once the money comes in for companies to make more stock there will be huge backorders at the suppliers as labels have to re-press their entire back catalogues to get back to where they were before.
So they've not lost everything per se, but if it's your job and you were only just getting by before, this could be the last straw.
Gutting all around.
*Of course I might be wrong.
So
is this stuff destroyed or not?
list from boomkat
http://boomkat.com/support_pias_labels/grid
(and before people complain about them profiteering. they do say it's better to buy from the label itself)
any album purchase recommendations guys? Dudes?
^yes^
Go onto the chemikal underground site and buy anything by the delgados. i have just bought 'peloton' so you should probably get that or the 'great eastern' both are fantastic albums.
I would recommend:
Rolling Blackouts by The Go! Team, on Memphis Industries. I must say that I find the lyrics and title of one of the songs on the album, "Buy Nothing Day", to be particularly apt; if you buy nothing today, it could be the end of these labels.
Did anyone see the warehouse on the news?
It's just not there any more.
liverpool folk; or others
i'm trying to set up a series of shows in liverpool to try and help. experimenting with how possible this is but i want the entry fee to be free if you can show that you've spent x amount of money on digital releases from affected labels since the distro centre burnt down. if any of you can help or want to join the efforts in other cities (i understand there are other people trying to do it, i contacted piasfundraising@gmail.com earlier and am waiting for another response) then email me at robertgrahamlarkin@gmail.com, people especially needed are those with connections to venues, connections to bands who will be enough of a draw to get people buying, people who can help with the tech side, anybody who can help with promotion, representatives from labels who have the time to open communications with us, etc. community effort.
ouch
www.reverbnation.com/malfunktionjunction **** Hey everyone in the drownedinsound community I have a band out of Charleston Sc making head way through the south east just trying to to let some people hear about them before they get bigger. They're fans are awesome and the shows are real rock n roll shows. spontaneous is the word.. Hope everyone enjoys. email me @ red.berry67@gmail.com if you have any questions about the band. WITH peace and love
Alexei JoFo: ''at least half the fuss and clamour being made over the Sony/PIAS fire is bullshit''
http://bloggyforeigner.blogspot.com/2011/08/now-i-dont-know-bjork-right.html
where his argument completely collapses
is when he says the big indies, XL, beggars, warp etc are "playing up the tragic angle as much as possible". guess what, they're not, not one of them has - because theyre run by sensible, caring people. they've all issued press releases saying that they are OK, and theyre mostly worried about these small cottage-industry labels who dont have the resources to recover as easily.
terrible band, terrible opinions
cheers
