2011 Rolling Hip-Hop Thread (pt.2)
Here's a link to the first half thread: http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4277028 which the spam bots ruined.
So ya... second half highlights, discussion and link sharing to ensue. Keep it bookmarked and roll on.
AraabMuzik - Electronic Dreams
This is an all instrumental album full of grandiose soundscapes, rife with zany synth patterns and stirring vocal (house?) samples.
Here's samples from the album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StaYPEDaIys
For fans of: Clams Casino, Blue Sky Black Death
Dudes pretty deft with the ol' MPC.
sounds like a poor man's Flying Lotus
not for me
How so?
They both make beats I guess, I like both.
FL leans towards jazz influences and his sound has a more organic feel to it where AM dips into house and electronic a little more. His beats feel more distant, in a good way. I would say that if you like FL than you would dig this, I guess if you only have time for one of them tho...
this is nice listening but clams casino > this I reckon
new Kool G Rap album
is good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5ypoE6zv6g
He still sounds good.
Will get this for sure. I have been stuck on 4,5,6 for the last year or so. It has moved up into my all time top 20 list. Perfect album.
What else is in your top 20?
NoEmotion
guy wears a mask and raps through a darth vader kind of voice changer. kind of stream of consciousness and really funny.

If you come on my land again you dirty cracker I will kill you
Would you like some tuna and crackers?
Selling my music to racist drug-addict backpackers
haha, wtf.
that is brilliant!
I usually hate this kind of shit.
But this is awesome. Reminds me of when I first heard Quas.
Just saw Rick Ross...
UHHHH!
He was pretty great and the crowd was super lively. I should really get around to listening to Self Made as I've been slacking on that one.
I think someone brought up Action Bronson in the last one
P4K just gave him an 8.1: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/15497-dr-lecter/
This album is really really enjoyable. It's hard to get past how much he sounds like Ghost but fuck it.
The songs I've heard on youtube are cool
Will cop.
Yah the production sounds sharp
and dude seems like a light-hearted version of Ghost. Bought this today, will report back sometime.
Action Bronson album is a lot of fun
The beats sound great.
Ah, here's that gay rap you were talking about.
No clue how to react to this at all.
that shit made me laugh last night
was oblivious to the content for the first 30 seconds. from the 31st second onwards I was very aware.

Though I appreciate the content he's not a great MC.
As queer rap goes this is much better:

Some of you might be into a lost Company Flow jam
http://www.sonicrouter.com/2011/06/download-company-flow-n2n-burners-lost-mix/
Nice one jim.
Not sure if Death Grips has been mentioned yet
but this mixtape is hard as fuck. Sounds like an even crazier, angrier RZA howling over dirty electronic beats and distorted guitars. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qxa91EwFco
GUILLOTIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE
There's been like 3 threads on it that no one posted in. Weird album, very abrasive production, has grown on me some but man do I have to be in the right mood for it.
responsibility's cool...
this is top notch
Lil B- I'm Gay
Thank you Based God.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbLxTcSsd3I
Evereyone that kept saying
."why doesnt he just make a normal album with normal rapping and stuff?". finally got their wish. This is basically a straight up boom bap project and so far Im really enjoying it. Also he majorly copped out by putting the IM HAPPY under the IM GAY, and this album has nothing to do with any of that.
Also...
BECAUSE I LOVE YOU IF YOU DONT HAVE 10 DOLLERS TO BUY MY NEW PROJECT FROM ME HERE IT GOES FOR FREE BECAUSE ITS LOVE AND I MADE IT FOR YOU - Lil B

Yeah, it's totally one of the best produced albums of the year so far
I was disappointed with the I'm Happy thing too, but it's still a pretty bold move and I applaud the BG for his earlier statements about hoping he might be able to change the minds of homophobic hip-hop fans and us being "all one people." Lyrically, he actually seems to have something to say besides "swag."
Who the fuck expected I'm Gay to be better than Goblin?
I'm A Gay Goblin
Colab opportunity.
yeh. genuinely pretty great.
Loving it so far
Game is a banger. I hate myself and I Seen That Light are great too.
The new Kendrick Lamar lp is really good, called Section .80
He released a solid freebie last year titled O(verly) D(edicated). He's from Compton and has some really entertaining raps and strikes a nice balance of styles. He does some solid boom-bap http://youtu.be/ss1b9sphruM (really like his 2nd verse) / http://youtu.be/J_NWRB1ETtY and some technical chop raps (bone thugs style) http://youtu.be/iPNChz9M1Tk and can get thoughtful http://youtu.be/tEIY0uENivk .
My favorite on here is ADHD, kind of balances all of the above styles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3D2hk-BjjU
Will check this.
I enjoyed Overly Dedicated.
He kind of blacks out on the 2nd verse of Rigamortous.
The production on this is awesome
I'm still getting used to his rhyme style but I'm pretty much feeling it.
I'm waaaay behind on this
But really liking this guy. Could be one of the best albums of the year.
Aye, its solid.
I kind of love how weird his voice is.
Its been a while since I heard much I liked from Gucci Mane but this sounds promising
http://www.datpiff.com/Gucci-Mane-Writings-On-The-Wall-2-mixtape.247169.html
Boom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCdDZ19UvVQ Love that beat.
This is top notch
Gucci is back.
energy
http://www.thefader.com/2011/07/15/roach-gigz-f-lil-b-husalah-stupid-remix-mp3/
Man, Lil B is all over the place,
cant stay on beat to save his life. Maybe that's the point with him, but it really sounds horrible on this track, too distracting. Roach Gigz is gonna blow up huge, no doubt, and Husulah continues to impress year after year.
This is one of my favorite tracks this year:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WA7BZmN1Z7A
^ Straight up mid 90s Bay Area hip-hop homage, Ant Banks production style. Bass for days and perfectly timed horn stabs.
Lex
http://spaceagehustle.com/post/6615252502/my-sound-is-hard-my-sound-is-trap-lex-luger
He really needs to switch up and expand his sound.
He pretty much owned last year as far as smashers went, but its all getting a little sterile and samey. He uses the same bass kick on every track. Not that he doesnt have it in him, just needs to keep growing is all, interested to see where he takes his sound.
Currently feeling Drumma Boy WAY more.
Ryu_ was right, that new Kool G Rap is great.
I'm gonna lump this in with Roc Marciano's 'Marcberg' and AG's 'Everythings Berri' as these kind of refreshing old-vet boom-bap hard-hitting LP's that have slid under the radar.

Not a fan of his solo work :/
*Obviously not 2011 related but some may find this interesting. The second half has been a washout album-wise anyways, so I'm revisiting my Gang Starr records :)
Update: Primo posted up the whole lot for free on his twitter
If you haven't got into Gang Starr before then here's your perfect chance
http://www.sendspace.com/file/xqofa0
aww man, id been told he had.
this is just the bloody list again. ignore.
Is a good list.
A little too long tbf, he should have just listed like 10 and expounded on it a little more, and put them in order.
Above the Clouds is my current ring tone.
<3 Weed Scented
New Jay-Z & Kanye West - Otis
http://lifeandtimes.com/otis
The beat doesnt have enough umph for my liking,
the kick is weak and theres no snare, WHATS A HIP HOP SONG WITHOUT A SNARE! The sample gets old real quick too.
They seem to have trouble keeping on the beat too
I dunno... it's alright, but at the intro it sounds like it's gonna be on some Blueprint shit, and it's really just downhill from there. Could fit OK as a kind of interlude on the album, it's pretty damn short.
I'm in tears of excitement right now, not even joking, tears are in my eyes
"KOOL G. RAP & NECRO - THE GODFATHERS - FULL ALBUM 2012

Hopefully Necro gives G Rap a full length of stuff like this:

Hadnt heard a lot of those.
Really like that second to last one especially. Ya this could work, G Rap still has it too, evidenced by his new release.

Second installment of my column is up now
http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4143285-champion-sound-2--feat-samiyam-interview
On another note, I listened to Watch the Throne earlier. Thought it was pretty dull. Didn't really have high hopes anyway, but expected Kanye to come up with at least a couple of exciting beats.
I dont think Ye did much production on it tbf,
just stamped his name on some tracks as co-producer, like yo, turn down the drums a little and put my name on the credits. *PROJECTING*
Yeah, well I suppose that would make sense
as I do rate Kanye as a producer. Then again, I also rate some of the co-producers and they mostly don't deliver either.
Been listening to this Greneberg EP quite a bit.
Oh No & Alchemist (Gangrene) and Roc Marciano all join forces to make another dusty, neurotic sounding NY boom bap record. Its quite good. Only like 20 minutes long too.

A few good tracks on the Gangrene LP. Didn't totally connect.
Really like the track 'Hoard 90' from Greenberg. That beat is seriously calling out for a Curren$y freestyle over it.

DANNY BROWN - XXX
freeeeeeeeeee
http://www.foolsgoldrecs.com/xxx/
Have been keeping tabs on Danny since 09, excited to listen to this, just fired it up. Danny is pretty manic on the mic, but really demands listening, has a really strong presence.
Besides Dj Quik & Shabazz,
this was one of the few releases I was really anticipating this year.
He's pretty irreverant btw,
so if you're offended by that, then best to stay clear.
Hmm, not loving as much as I anticipated.
Def some strong moments, maybe its just a little bit too much for me atm, 19 tracks of this guy may be overkill.
I really like it!
For sure its overbearing and really quite oppressive listening but that's kind of what makes his personality so fascinating. That said i'm not sure I could take the whole tape in one sitting.
I think this was my issue,
I sat down and listened straight through in one listen, when I really wasn't in the mood in the first place. Dude is a loose canon.
CANNOT STOP LISTENING TO THIS
Yep, has grown on me. The back half especially.
Yeah I like the mood shift with the second half
DNA and 30 are gold
30 is my fav cut on there.
How about Scrap or Die?
Has there ever been another rap song on this topic? Doubt it.
Struggling to choose a single favourite really
Need to check out the Hybrid and his other stuff asap!
Seems like im at least a month behind everyone else
This is brilliant, bit like a modern day Kool Keith. This is a really strong year for hip hop releases.
New El-P tune

New cut off Oddisee's upcoming instrumental album.
http://oddiseemusic.blogspot.com/2011/08/carter-barron-rock-creek-park.html
Really really digging it. Brilliant drumming and lush instrumentation. Looking forward to hearing more.
Carrying on with Oddisee tip, got his Odd Seasons record (compilation of 4 ep's) and there's some cracking stuff on there.
New Big Krit tape - Last King 2

FREE GUYS, FREE
love this guy
Another great tape from Krit
I love how he just seems to be living his dream, working with his heroes, and making exactly the music he wants to make. He hasn't compromised himself at all so far, and I'm sure his album will be awesome.
I've enjoyed the recent Wale mixtapes more than I thought I would

New Young L Mixtape
http://www.sonicrouter.com/2011/08/download-young-l-%E2%80%93-as-i-float-the-great-john-nash/
I still play Loud Pockets pretty regular so hope this has some bangers on it too.
I like this.
Obviously was kinda hesitant when I heard it was based around Imogen Heap samples. It's weirdly similar to I'm Gay in the shift away from the modern whacked out shit to more traditional boom-bap beats. Kinda makes a refreshing change of pace and allows Young L to really shine as an MC.
Young L - What Yo Mind Do
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAC8_CoPR9U
this tape has been creeping up on me a lot since I posted it.
Really feeling the Don Trip & Starlito tape:
http://www.datpiff.com/Don-Trip-Starlito-Stepbrothers-mixtape.255304.html
First paid attention to Lito after that amazing tape Renaissance Gangster with DJ Burn One (totally underrated producer btw) but this bangs much harder with much less of that smoked out melancholy vibe.
Neither rappers are technically outstanding, and Don sometimes bites Gucci's flow, but their different styles compliment each other well and you get a real sense they're enjoying rapping together which gives the whole thing a level of fun and energy missing with so many of these phoned in collaborations.
been playing starlito a lot and hadn't seen this tape
had Renaissance Gangster and Ultimate Warror on repete pretty much. You're usualy on the money so I'll give this one a go too, biggles.
Another Curren$y freebie
Verde Terrace
http://www.datpiff.com/Curreny-Verde-Terrace-mixtape.262815.html

Hiphop show
Sorry for hijacking this thread but I'm trying to big up my show on Tuesday Sept 6th with Teebs & Jeremiah Jae over from L.A for some laid back west coast hip hop.
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=133142456760416
If I wasn't at Outlook I'd be all over this
As it is I'll hopefully catch Teebs at Outlook - hope this goes well either way!
Has ASAP Rocky already been covered in this thread?
Was listening to some of his stuff this afternoon. Pretty chilled stuff. Lots of verse about being pretty and wearing designer clothes. Done some stuff with Main Attraktionz as well. I'm sure soemone more knows more about him then I do.
I like some of it.
Purple Swag is awesome for sure.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuZ2QZKYj7c
Cant go wrong with that sample source though. Funny cos swag is like the most played out word all time but yet these guys are sticking to it like its so fresh. The overall vibe to that song is pretty cool though.
Basically the blogger realniggatumblr put him up and is promoting him and pushing him. Kind of like how noz (cocaineblunts) did with Lil B. Kind of weird to have these blogging dudes having actual sway in the industry, I kind of feel like Asap is being forced on to me sometimes, but hes alright.
Not sure if this is good or not, but heres One.Be.Lo's
new album LABOR http://onebelo.bandcamp.com/album/labor.
MICHIGAN STAND UP. Former member of Binary Star.
I obviously got love for the dude
But I haven't been feeling anything he's done since Binary Star. Like, not even a little bit. It's depressing.
Yep, this is pretty weak.
he also needs to stop titling his songs like it's the late nineties
ffs.
Fucking acronyms and shit.
Stop it you fucker.
Yeah, he's been coasting in no mans land since
Binary Star. The acronym gimmick thing is nagl, agreed.
New (well, sort of) Illogic album
http://illogic.bandcamp.com/album/year-8076
Was supposed to be released on Rhymesayers back in 2006 but got shelved due to personal reasons. Being released now as a free download becuase Illogic liked the record, and it's sounding really good so far.
What's that One.Be.Lo like?
DL'ing this.
Only got through like 10 tracks of the 35 or so on that Onebelo. Seems alright enough. Thats a lot of tracks to get through and I'm battling a major itch to listen to everything Timbaland put out, atm.
the new MED album's available in digital format
here, if anyone's interested:
http://www.stonesthrow.com/news/2011/09/med-classic
production comes from the likes of Karriem Riggins, Alchemist, Oh No and obviously Madlib himself. First impressions are that it's pretty good, but this track stands out a mile for me:

Cool, you should cross-ref this link

hey guys
I hate doing this, but I'm trying to get a blog off the ground and i know very little about getting a name out there, AND it's a hip-hop blog, so I thought some of you might be at least a little interested, (although to be fair a lot of the stuff on there will probably be based on recommendations from this thread anyway..)
no worries if you can't even be bothered to click on the link, but if you do any feedback would be appreciated.

This is one of my favourite hip-hop releases this year
deftly named 'Fela Soul', de la soul/fela kuti mashup album.
http://gummysoul.bandcamp.com/album/fela-soul
Will try this out tonight,
I admit to not being a mashup fan though. Even the *better* ones are more like a novelty thing, I never listen to them more than once.
me neither to be honest
but like my other exception to the rule, Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers (Wu-Tang/Beatles), this one has been expertly crafted. Been on repeat all evening.

Yeah been bumping this.
this is ace btw...
raw, its got energy, killer beats, loada hooks. Been playing it quite a bit.
best Hip hop album of 2011 so far
Shabazz palaces- Black Up
Incredibly well- crafted, superior rapping skills and a talent for the unusual. Just what the hip- hop world needs right now, and has done for a very long time.
It is really good
but I don't feel as reverential about it as you. Hip Hop is just fine where its at, tons of different styles going on at the moment. SP happens to be excelling at that type (abstract?) of rap, but they aren't the white knights of rap coming to redeem mankind from their goon ridden ways. He's a good rapper, even if a little monotone, wouldn't put him in the "superior" realm though. Its really all about the overall vibe of Shabazz that makes them; the booming low end, the claustrophobic nature of the mix, the element of mystery, the overall span of the sound (doesn't sound new or old), the imagery, the hypnotic monotone. The whole package is really well put together and thought out.
I sort of agree with this
I find it a bit strange how Shabazz has got so much attention, especially from the kind of people who would usually completely ignore leftfield hip hop. I guess the Sub Pop thing has helped its cause, or maybe it's just really good, but I haven't gotten into it personally. Even so, the idea that this is some new radical shake-up for a stale Hip Hop scene is kind of irritating, and probably makes me want to like SP less. Might give the album another try this weekend, but it didn't really work for me when I saw the live show.
Yeah they have been alligned
with an annoying narrative, but that happens every year within almost every genre. If the music holds up though, you just have to put it all aside and be ready to defend it while also being prepared to say "yeah its good, but..."
I didn't even realise that people thought hip hop needed saving anymore...
I mean, it's been fairly widely argued now that 2011 could be the best year for hip hop since the 90s.
One would have a much easier time arguing that indie rock needed a kick up the arse.
Yeah, that dialogue has died a little,
but it still exists.
A few months ago...
I would have agreed with you. Back at the beginnign of the year, there were some incredibly exciting things going on in hip- hop. Odd future, Waka Flocka Flame and the like... There was a new era that was more in line with punk rock than any actual hip- hop music at the time. It was incredibly enticing; But the thing I've often found with hip- hop, and this is, I'm sure, just a personal taste thing, is that it can quickly get boring. I agree with what you said about it, overall, being the style and vibe of SP that makes them an intriguing and mind- bending project, but some of the stuff they write is incredible, lyrically. It's a new brand of what I call more "intelligent hip- hop", which for me is really captivating and a fresh break away from what came before.
Death Grips are also very good.
Oh no... "intelligent hip- hop"
rolls eyes.
It's just different
It's the same reason that, in the indie rock world, for example, I treasure bands like Foals and Wild Beasts. They're bringing originality and character to a scene with otherwise is pretty delinquent nowadays, in my opinion. The same for pop music and artists like Bjork. It's just refreshing to have something different, and if that means being more intelligent than artists such as odd future (sample lyric: " I'm gonna rape her later, decapitate her, I fucking hate her") then so be it.
this is why hip hop is in such bad shape
we're still waiting for the rap equivalent of foals!
Hey now,
that's his/your words, I'm waiting for no such thing.
Intelligent hip hop?
Look at the lyrics, it's not exactly Aesop Rock or anything.
When people look at why 2011 was such a great year they'll point to Danny Brown's warped Kool Keith-esque XXX, Curren$y's string of consistently great projects, K.R.I.T's mixtapes, Green Ova's output (particularly L.W.H, & 808s & Dark Grapes imo), Lil B coming good with I'm Gay, big anthems like Im The One & 2Pac Back, Jay Rock, instrumentals like AraabMuzik & Clams Casino, Watch The Throne will get a lot of mentions as another bold (if patchy) project which will surely influence mainstream rap, and heads will point out a string of other great releases (Action Bronson, Kendrick Lamar, E-40, Random Axe...)
Sure Shabazz Palaces is up there, but it's arguably not even the best album by a vet this year, with DJ Quik releasing another classic as well. Odd Future were only the most interesting thing in hip hop if you weren't looking too hard (although the Frank Ocean record was great & what I've heard of the Domo Genesis mixtape sounded pretty decent.) I'm sure others could point out some more great stuff to check out, so get digging.
Yeah man, good stuff from all kinds of
different angles/styles.
One of my favorite things about this year is that seasoned vets are showing that they still have a strong presence in the rap world.
All I'm saying is...
It's much better written and pieced together much better too. I guess it's subjective, but that's just my view on things.
Nacho Picasso
The nerd vibes are strong with this one at times but I'm still feeling it. He's got some good stuff, this is ace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RThPd_gZjCw

Been spending the last few week re-visiting OutKast's discography in order. Sorry to state the obvious, but what a group. ATliens is definitely my favorite - is there a general consensus on best OutKast album?
General consensus with long-time
fans is a toss up between Aquemini and ATLiens. Lots of people jumped on board at Stankonia so that's their entry point/favorite. EVEN MORE people jumped on at Spkrbbx/LvBlw, and that's when I partially jumped off. ATLiens is my 2nd favorite rap lp all time.
i'm an old school head
when it comes to Outkast, southerplayalisticadiilacmuzik is perhaps my favourite. Definitely nowhere near as 'accomplished' as atliens or aquemini but just... something about it.
packs that old school thump like few others
see also: Dare iz a darkside
Southernplayalistic is great.
You can hear how they already had an ear for great beats and addicting hooks, but it just feels a little more juvenile than what came after it. Still a certified classic though. I really hope they have something left in the tank together.
I'd be happy with another Big Boi joint as good as Sir Lucious tbh
I've kind of written off Dre but maybe he could still surprise me.
Luscious was great yah,
especially the singles.
Dre guest spot on that Wayne track was pretty cool, and completely out of nowhere

Young Bleed
Another former member of the No Limit family in the late 90s has a new kind-of "comeback" lp titled Preserved. Pretty straight-forward laconic flow from the south, but has that grown man smooth that I love.
Holla At Uh Dog is pretty perfect:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L00oSU-wOZY
and Call The Police is just weird and awesome:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T25Sw2fAQy0
This is the song that put him on the map in 98,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxVzhpcX_pM
HOW YA DO DAT. You know I'm a sucker for rolling bass like that.
HA,
literally just typed this and went to my RSS reader and saw that it just got reviewed by p4k today, coool.
J Cole
finally released his debut and I think its pretty cool. Wasnt expecting to like it at all, but it works really well as a polished pop-rap album, in line with Graduation/Watch The Throne style Kanye. Mostly all self produced and it sounds *expensive*. Nothing game changing but v solid for what it is. SO many sports references as well.
Black & Brown
aw yeah
What do you think of it?
It's a bit of a strange one - seems a bit all over the place to me. When it clicks into place it's pretty strong, but to me it feels a lot like 5 track EP stretched into 10.
Its a solid little shot of music.
XXX is where its at for D Brown this year though.
17 (SEVEN-TEEN) tracks on Take Care.
Oh Drake.
Rappers are in dire need of editors.
Someone to just be blunt and start cutting tracks.
It's been a while since I've had a look on this thread.
Thanks for the Danny Brown tip, 'Ship. Love that record. He is flat out crazy.
I haven't been keeping up on my hip hop as I've been studying a lot and trying to buckle down while some guy spits in your ear doesn't really work out.
But I just got a promo of the new Teebs record and I really like that. Even though it's not proper hip hop.
NEW FREDDIE GIBBSSSSSSS
YEAAHAHAHAHBOIIIII
hulkshare.com/hq2g7wmd1s2f
Is awesome. get this.
Titled 'Cold Day In Hell' by the way.
This is one of the better cuts Ive heard in some time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXl8dq5bl2k
OH SHIT SON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not big on this so far actually
Not huge on the lyrical content - it's too simplistic, too much bitches and hos and some of the hooks are really lame r'n'b.
It's weird cos that's why I love Gibbs so much
He's like a really obvious, Tupac-style, double-time maestro, and all of his choruses seem firmly stuck in the mid 90's, and even though that's the type of rap I've felt most lukewarm to in the past there is something so solid and shamelessly nostalgic about it I can't help but enjoy it. I think mostly his voice and delivery sound so fucking badass.
Yeah, this for sure,
I love this kitchy nature of the hooks, mixed with current production trends, mixed with bragadocious posturing.
Also,
Gibbs hasn't changed his subject matter at all, it is what it is. Ganster rap through and through.
he's nothing but cliche
but does it kinda solid I guess... Can't really get thru the odd track by him here and there in one sitting tbh its all kinda same old same old. No new beats no new lyrics... Just done in a solid kinda way. He's competent but boring bar the odd flash.
I get this.
I feel like he has a really good ear for beats though, and that's a major factor in why I like him.
damn
I have to agree with this. there's 3 or 4 bangers and the rest is just meh...too soft
Definitely could have trimmed a couple ladies jams,
but some of them really work imo. I have a high tolerance for soupy hooks though and slowed funk though.
Though though :/
yeah I don't mind that slow funk sound it's just the lyrical content on some of them with the rnb vox
had to skip "so amazing" for example. I want to hear about cooking rock, woke up this monrin with murda on my mind etc. anyway, highlights:
rob me a nigga and let em burn. on second listen it seems there's more like 5 bangers than 3-4.
let ya nuts hang
is a beast too
New track/vid off Gibbs next project with Statik Selektah:

real nice
So, some kinda big releases last night on halloween:
Freddie Gibbs - Cold Day In Hell (linked above)
Asap Rocky - Live Love Asap

Jim Jones - Vampire Life
http://www.datpiff.com/Jim-Jones-Vampire-Life-We-Own-The-Night-mixtape.278577.html
This LEP song/video got me excited for the tape:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm_m8LizquM Just pure good raps.
But the tape is pretty hit and miss.
just pure *goon raps
just stuck on the asap
really like the beats and chopped'n'screwed hooks but not so sure about his rapping yet. even though he's got a stankonia/drake hazy thing going on not sure he pulls it off in a very memorable way just yet. kinda sounds like a poppy easy going main attrakionz so maybe there is some room for that when you dont want it too heavy, kinda like that its nice and light. maybe it'll grow on me in a while, we'll see.
Looking forward to hearing the ASAP Rocky tape.
Really like the couple of songs I've heard on YouTube.
not sure where I stand on ASAP
I was drawn in by the fact that there's a ton of Clams Casino beats, and the opener is huge, but I think he overdoes the screwed vocals a little bit and drags those parts out to the point where they become monotonous rather than providing contrast. There are plenty of great moments though, and I do love the way he spits triplets. I'll have to give it some time.
Totally agree,
not really taken by it at all. The Dj Burn One joints are the best ones imo. I like him over production like that more than Clams for some reason.
Tbf,
after listening to the tape all I wanted to do was listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt7BEbdCFMM on repeat for an hour or two.
FAT JOE
this was a let down

I think plenty of dudes here would like
Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire 'Lost In Translation' mixtape. Awesome album art, loads of El-P beats and such, lazy flow, self deprecating stuff.
Album art and video NSFW
http://mishkanyc.bandcamp.com/album/mr-muthafuckin-exquire-lost-in-translation
Its pretty cool, has a few real standouts, including the lead single Huzzah, produced by Necro.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bzoyVKZaL4
Yeah, I'm a big fan of it
Maltese Falcoln pt.1 and 2 is so great!
Starlito - #UW: Separation Anxiety
http://starlito.bandcamp.com/album/uw-separation-anxiety
New EP from Starlito, been playing his stuff quite a bit recently so looking forward to getting this on rotation.
He's becoming v prolific all the sudden.
the ep aint bad either
not as solid as Ultimate Warror its got a whole diffrent vibe too, some kinda soulful/hip-hop thing with a raw edge brought on by his raspy voice. Feels like a taster/experiment in that kinda vibe more than a fully realised EP.
in other news... ASAP Rocky linked to a chopped & screwed remix of his mixtape and its kinda one note bar 'Kissing Pink' which really comes alive when it's slo-mo/chopped. May as well grab it for that tbh.
If anyone
has any desire to watch a slightly awkward 100 minute long interview with MF DOOM...

new Black Star album in 2012!
according to Kweli..
http://www.complex.com/music/2011/11/mos-def-talib-kweli-to-reunite-in-2012-for-new-black-star-album
Would be interesting
yeah
If it's Madlib and Dilla inspired like he says then i find that quite a tantalising prospect
Kweli hasnt done anything I've really liked
since Quality, but I'd be interested to see how this sounds. The first one is an album I really loved for years, but when I revisit it now I kinda just feel like I was stanning a little due to the strengths of a few of the tracks on it:
Astronomy
Definition
Respiration
K.O.S. (Determination)
I can kind of pass on the rest tbh.
Has anyone heard this?
Davinci - Feast or Famine.
http://hiphopatlunch.com/2011/08/davinci-feast-or-famine-ep-download-interview/
It's really classic, does nothing special or unique, but it is really really good. Great production, great lyrics, really outstanding delivery. Big fan.
Yeah, it's quite good.
He's got a cool low rasp to his voice. The Day The Turf Stood Still was a good tape as well. Production on both is really solid.
has anyone heard that Danny Brown and Black Milk record yet?
can't find any reference to it
Yeah it was streaming on soundcloud
Overall impression: good not great. Feels very rushed actually. But some nice ideas.
I've mostly been discovering things in retrospect this year
Best discoveries have probably been Jehst and Five Deez - the former especially. WTF @ a properly electrifying British MC, I thought it was illegal here. And the samples/beats on 'Return Of The Drifter' are A+
New Jehst album is so great.
One of my albums of the year for sure.
Gonna have to get on that then!
:)
OK, I just listened to 'England'
WOW. Fucking amazing. Dare I say, an English version of Immortal Technique (i.e. with a certain tricksy Anglo-Saxon decorum in place of fiery Hispanic-American confrontation) - this guy has AMAZING backing tracks as well, never gets lazy, always changing it up. As I say, searing socio-political invective like this and Immortal Technique is what gets me going - I hope it doesn't sound snooty when I say that this is, for me, what rap is best suited for, and where it achieves its best results. Kanye and his pathetic, pompous solipsism can do one :D

It didn't sound snooty til the Kanye stab. But I dont know you well enough to know what angle your bringing, if its just an anti Kanye thing or an anti "mainstream" rap thing.
An anti-Kanye thing obviously!
playa's gotta zing
>takes a british rapper seriously
>doesn't like kanye
I've heard enough
Fuck off and respect
oo|o / ---> ==][== <---
LJ?
we meet again
:D
this revelation pleases me
because it's you I had to check jehst out
'england' has a great beat I'll give it that
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://tinyurl.com/76shrbw
I hope I don't sound snooty when I say this
but Immortal Technique is all about pathetic, pompous proselytizing, which is way worse. And he also raps over some of the corniest music I have ever heard in my fucking life. And he has zero memorable lines, no sense of humor, his rhymes fucking suck, his analogies are some retarded shit that a fourteen year old would come up with and think is badass, talking about armies of aborted fetuses and whatever bullshit.
So yeah, fuck Immortal Technique. Rant over.
But hey, whatevs bro.
you seem to misjudge why I listen to Immortal Technique
If I want awesome lyrical sophistication, I'll stick on some Def Jux. If I want visceral sonic barnstorming, I'll turn to Dalek. If I want chill production, something like Five Deez will suit. If I want cerebral psychedelia, it's off to cLOUDDEAD. If I want gangsta shit, I (ok, I don't really want gangsta shit but no beef if you do)...right, that's all out the way, so
if I want direct-as-fuck, angry-as-God-and-all-his-angels-when-a-puppy-dies, politically-subtle-as-a-tombstone-to-the-face, self-confessedly-obnoxious, totally-and-utterly-unmitigated anti-authoritarian bile,
I listen to RATM
(just kidding, they're shite. IT is awesome tho. viva!)
Jehst interview from earlier in the year
http://www.sonicrouter.com/2011/06/jehst-life%E2%80%99s-what-happens-when-you%E2%80%99re-making-other-plans/
its pretty epic.

Anyone watched this Red Bull interview with DOOM?
Really long, but super interesting.
http://vimeo.com/31521253
I did
definitely enjoyed it, despite how awkward it was at points, especially at first when the guy just plays the first song off Mm.. Food and everyone sits around listening to it.
But yeah DOOM cuts an interesting interview figure and it was good to hear him speaking so directly about his craft and persona.
Yeah
it started out pretty awkward when they were talking about equipment and stuff. But he seemed to like talking about his different aliases and the KMD stuff.
On a related note, I've been pleasantly surprised by his live performances recently. Not perfect, but he seems to be finally stepping up that side of his game.
DJ Premier/Bumpy Knuckles

Liking this.
New Lloyd Banks tape is real solid.
http://www.datpiff.com/Lloyd-Banks-The-Cold-Corner-2-mixtape.274456.html
Lots of mid-career Kool G Rap vibes off this one, NY street based raps with a wavy edge. Nothing soft here.
really digging this
Yeah, quite good.
Even the one with the Radiohead sample \o_0/

jus wanted to stick that track there cos the beat is fucked
Is a cool beat.
KL is cool.
Too Cool is a jam.
Anyone up for a UK funky producer making a hip-hop beat with a grime MC going breakneck on top of it?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bgYwvLthyM
kinda fucked up, in a good way.
Just not sure what I can do to get over the accents?
I want to like it, but just cant. Dude can obv chop it up with the best of the double-timers, but I just cant get with it. Maybe some day, who knows.
Obv I'm just use to the accent since I'm from the UK
Plus listen to too much grime haha For me the UK vibe is more about rawness and energy than flow and accent. Its the way they do 8/16 bars then flip to the next with agression and repertition to get some hype going, the UK vibe is still more attached to dance MCing where you can build and build with hype and repertition 8/16 bars. The US guys tend to flow over longer periods and it doesn't have the short sharp switching energy. Scrufizzer's voice is a harsh one mind he's like a hyperactive Dizzee Rascal on this track. Maybe try something less quick like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=440o7zzbAFk
pleasant surprise?
let's try again
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuQbHvPjcBw
have to admit he's really not bad
Anyone heard the Doomtree album?
Really intrigued.

Yelawolf
Jesus, his album is bad. I suppose I've been expecting that for some time now, but this is just ridiculous.
Shame, because the first Trunk Muzik mixtape I thought was genuinely unique and brilliant.
Not great, but there are some cool songs.
Get Away F. Mystikal!

Gunplay is cool. That song is on my end of year comp at the moment. Still narrowing it down.
its a banger
love his over the top agressive energy, really into the beats too. Reminds me a biot of Danny Brown but more hardcore. They both shout well haha.
This is huge.
Not sure if it'd work across a whole album but downloading the mixtape now..

Its alright,
He has like 4 releases this year that you could compile a killer 10-12 comp from. I'ma do it later actually.
Jon Wayne
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4cDiFAC-t0
oops, that should be "Jonwayne - Pachabel"
Anyway, this came out back in September so I may have missed the boat a bit. Really want to get my hands on his mixtape but his website appears to have vanished...
I just looked for that too and failed
no idea who the dude is but the list of producers is pretty sick.
lol wait...

turns out its on SR.

Get your house in order Jimi :D
I don't post everything on SR

Jeez Cronin,
I don't come in and sully up the threads you make that don't interest me. We're all very aware of your tastes and thoughts on rap music aaaaaand not interested in ever hearing them again. Have some respect.
I was just stabbing back, yeah, no offense taken.
I really do think your thoughts about hiphop are very *old guard* (not meant to be an ageist stab) though and there's probably no need to debate it since you've pretty much closed your mind to it and decided you don't like 99.9% it (which, of course, is fine).
Billy Woods - Cowardly Threats & Hideous Cruelty
http://potholesinmyblog.com/billy-woods-cowardly-threats-hideous-cruelty-mixtape/
Missed this earlier in the year, but it's great! Sounds like some classic Def Jux shit (I think el-P produces a few beats).
This mixtape is really long because it's a collection of a few releases I think - but it's well worth filtering through.

Big Boi's track 'Lines' feat. A$AP Rocky?
Because it is fucking IMMENSE.
Just swung by to let you know. Peace.
Enjoying the album a lot
But I can't help but shake the feeling of disappointment. Similar vibes that I got from Centipede Hz or Until the Quiet Comes - when an artist sets such ridonkulous high, genre-bending standards, something that by any other dude is a very good album seems like a bit of a let down. That, and only In the A really bumps.
My favourite song might still be Mama Told Me... It's a really great pop tune. Don't understand the lukewarm reception it received at all.
2011 called, it wants its thread back!
BUMP
