2011 Rolling Hip-Hop Thread
A place for all things rap that may or may not merit their own thread. Links to: streaming albums, good mix-tapes, good blogs, insightful articles, singles and youtube videos are all appreciated. DiScuss what LP's you are excited about at the moment, what songs are making your system scream, etc.
Bookmark this and use it throughout the year. That way I don't have to make new threads all the time about some track that like 3 people around here might be interested in.

I like this idea.
I like this G-Side album http://g-side.bandcamp.com/
Admittedly, I'm stealing your thunder cos it was you wot posted it. But still.
Right on, it's really great.
This is ace
Kanye West tweeted yesterday that he'll have *another* new album out this summer
Initially said "I'll be back this SUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!", then added "MY NEW ALBUM COMING THIS SUMMER".
I don't think he can really say he's gone away, especially since the collabo album with Hov is out in March, and the chances are it will be delayed til at least the Autumn... but he shows no signs of slowing down & it has to be one of my most anticipated albums of the year regardless. No other info except him saying "I just threw some bassoon on this muthafucka".
I just threw some bassoon on this muthafucka
Sold
I'm looking forward to what this thread has to offer
This year's been a bit of a slow starter...
imakemadbeats debut lp was alright, not quite as good as I'd thought it would be though. Stream here: http://imakemadbeats.bandcamp.com/album/imakemadbeats-2
Kinda hyped for the Big K.R.I.T and Grillade EP coming soon, has the potential to be pretty nice, first leak: http://www.2dopeboyz.com/2011/01/18/big-k-r-i-t-grillade-neva-go-back/
I agree it's been a slow start.
Checking that imakebeats right now.
BIG KRIT and Grillade doing Hometown Hero live:
http://vimeo.com/19087511
I'm liking the new Fiend tape.
Mostly laid back weed rap. This tune is the standout:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSXx2epheFE
Beat is stupid good.
I used to listen to Fiend in the 90s,
didn't even know he was still around. Nice, I will look into this for sure.
This is his come back I think.
I didn't know his 90s stuff but this made me check out some tunes on youtube which sounded great. Can you recommend any particular album?
There's One In Every Family
was the only one I had. Dropped right in the middle of my No Limit records obsession. Honestly, its really good, and other than Mystikal's stuff and Ghetto D, this is the only No Limit lp I kept around through the years. I wouldn't recommend it to most around here, but I know you like this kind of stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFAIjUUrP7E
I managed to find this online already.
Sounds great, really liked his aggression and hyped delivery. He doesn't really sound like that anymore, must've mellowed with age!
It happens, its a natural progression.
I'm interested to see if Mystikal will calm it down a bit too, hopefully not.
:DDDD
I'm awful at keeping up to date with stuff like this - there's just too much!
I have been replaying that Stalley mixtape he released last year. It's great, apart from the spoken word track which makes me cringe.
http://stalley330.bandcamp.com/album/madstalley-the-autobiography
yeh, i like this record quite a bit. the one where he vocals that malib's sunrays beat works surprisingly well.
Thing is, first time I heard Shades of Blue
I thought "Why isn't Q-tip rapping all over this?"
Stalley's new project is coming out in a couple weeks,
here's the first single, basically an ode to his muscle cars.
Slapp
http://youtu.be/C5Je_KUzZYo
Mmm don't like this so much
Will spin it a few more times though.
Yah its not great is it,
the beat is pretty fresh (tuba stabs) and Stalley sounds comfortable, but I cant get behind that weak ass hook.
Stalley's Lincoln Way Nights-Download
this new album is really good: http://mishkanyc.bandcamp.com/album/presents-stalley-lincoln-way-nights-intelligent-trunk-music
i only really know the big ones
G-Side album is real good.
Curren$y tape is alright but no Pilot Talk. Ditto Rick Ross w/Ashes to Ashes/Teflon Don
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTp1Im5Koak
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfJu7L-Zy9M
Statik Selektah and Frank the Butcher
have put out this Concepts: Selektions tape, its pretty good so far, some mid 90s vibes.
http://smokingsection.uproxx.com/TSS/2011/01/download-frank-the-butcher-and-statik-selektah-present-concepts-selektions
Reeeally liking this song,
Mickey Halsted feat/ Fred Gibbs - FNB (produced by No I.D.)
http://vimeo.com/17794567
Video is pure class too, the piano adds a nice touch.
I cant get on with Paz either.
Dude's a goon. The production on the Army of Pharoahs type of stuff is usually solid though, everything is massive and overblown. I would get the instrumental versions.
tha carter IV's on the way
saw an interview with drake saying there's already some stuff down for it. also the second madvillainy is very overdue and very, very anticipated
New Game mixtape released tonight sometime
His Brake Lights mixtape was really great last year, but the leaked tracks I've heard since have been a bit crap.
If the rest of the mixtape is anything like this track with Wiz Khalifa, though, it's gonna be great
http://www.xxlmag.com/homepage-highlight/2011/01/game-ft-wiz-khalifa-taylor-made-xxclusive-banger/
yeah, can download/stream now via Nah Right
http://nahright.com/news/2011/01/24/game-dj-skee-funkmaster-flex-purp-and-patron-mixtape/
EVERYTHING BRICK SQUAD
Gucci Two Times and Everything Brick Squad are both getting lots of plays on my ways to work at the moment. The Wacka Flocka/Giggs track is also pretty ace. Big year for these guys if they can stay out of jail.
I really like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP11r5n5RNg
I'm not sure I'd describe it as hip-hop personally, but he describes himself as hip-hop, so whatever.
Love the video.
Not usually a fan if UK emcees but I enjoyed that.
For some reason
after listening to this this afternoon, I see it posted on every social media whateversite I'm on.
picked up the latest Medicine Show this week
not quite as good as #5 for me, but some good contributions from Strong Arm Steady, Guilty Simpson, J.Rocc and MED on there. Still eagerly awaiting the album with Frank Nitty if it ever arrives - a Frank n Dank reunion would hit the spot.
Any links to the best tracks on there?
need to give it a few more listens I think
but these are my early favourites:
MED - Snakes 101
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXwR5gdRN6A
SAS - Charlie Hustle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaODZ4Gcks4
Madlib & Oh No - Hold Up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLG3aiugxRg
Guilty Simpson - Thoughts of an Old Flame
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6UqU5__NMw
Excellent.
Madlib + Oh No
relelntless. Love Madlib.
Just ordered #4 Medicine Show after picking up the last two. Its like the re-immerssion of what the Beat Konductas were doing. Just THE best flow to an album I've heard recently X
Kutmah - The New Error Vol. 1
better than good this
http://3voor12.vpro.nl/speler/luisterpaal/44409773#luisterpaal.44409773
This just keeps getting better
Yah this is real nice.

New Detox single, potentially the finished version rather than a sketchy one that was going around
So I quite like it... good pop tune, right? I could potentially enjoy this album after all.
"I Need a Doctor" f. Eminem
http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/singles/id.12783/title.dr-dre-f-eminem-skylar-grey-i-need-a-doctor-prod-alex-da-kid
This is really poor to me.
But I washed my hands of Eminem years ago. That Kush track is proper pop rap tho.
Hmm, i didn't really like Kush... It's far from a great track, but better than I was expecting for the 'throwaway pop' single.
Yah its alright, nothing too special, has some bounce to it.
I really just don't care about Detox at all by this point.
It's going to be so mediocre. The hip hop Chinese Democracy in every sense of the word. I still can't bring myself to ignore it though.
really warming to this even despite it being love the way you lie pt 3...
Free Gucci 2: The BURRtish Edition is released on Friday!
I've been rinsing the Mosca remix of 'O Dog' since I found it floating around the internet a week or so ago, it's like some fucked up dancehall track, you can stream it here: http://oomk.tumblr.com/post/2613696343/gucci-mane-trigganom-o-dog-mosca-remix
And there's more info on the whole thing, which is basically the follow up to the Diplo-curated Gucci Mane remix mixtape from last year, over at FACT, here: http://www.factmag.com/2011/01/25/details-of-sinden-curated-gucci-mane-mixtape-out-the-bag/
its coming on mad decent
think they do vinyl
you're not wrong
that track is brilliant.
will try to d/l the mixtape tonight
now
http://maddecent.com/blog/free-gucci-2-the-burrrtish-edition
Hope it has more gems than the last one, I only kept Flying Lotus and Zomby's last time the rest where awful.
I listened to it on the way to work this morning
some crackers (O Dog, Remember When, Weirdo - all good reworkings) but skipped through a lot of it.
Its a big step up from the last one
best thing I've heard from Sinden and Mad Decent in a very long time, they haven't set the bar very high mind lol not for me anyway. Original Gucci is always gonna sound better but this is cool for what it is.
this is so awful
feels like most of the producers don't even like gucci, some don't even try to work his vocals in in any coherent way. i'd expect it from some of the shitty blog has beens that are littered around (duke dumont's attempt at a "hip hop beat" is pretty shocking, and what the hell is going on with sinden's track? horrible) but people like hud mo and rustie- who by all accounts should be nailing stuff like this - completely phone it in. hud mo's is microsoft songsmith level, what the hell. ghetts demonstrates the gulf in charisma between US and UK mcs, adding pointless freeky-deeky nu metal bro verses to one of the only good tracks on the original album, whilst swerve just makes the beat so godawfully ugly. the whole thing's just clumsy and awful, can't understand what the point is, because it fails as a gucci style thing, it fails at recontextualising and ignoring the gucci theme the tracks are pretty poor in terms of UK bass stuff. the only thing its good for is a big promo opportunity with a bunch of cool brands try to siphon off each others credibility
bizarrely, these new puritans have pretty much the only good take on it, the vibe they create actually fits the bizarre/abstract idea of gucci buying $. the blessings' one is ok, but only because they recognise the swizz beats instrumental is unfuckwithable and keep it intact. why would people want to hear gucci a cappellas on poor uk funky? or horrible approximations at trap/hip hop beats by producers like sinden? the whole thing is thrown together in such a lazy way, such a waste. i swear the only way this could be enjoyable is if you think gucci mane's some gimmick-y piece of exoticism that its cool to root behind because you're some mad decent fuckhead. bad source material as well, definitely the worst gucci release, but i suppose blame warner for that, one of their misguided "credibility" stunts i guess.
A millions times this.
It's just as shockingly terrible as the first one. I think the central conceit of these remix projects is that these 'intelligent' producers make more innovative/forward looking/avant music than the popular/cheesy/hood genres they imitate, providing something beyond mere dance floor fodder. The reality is of course that truly populist/ghetto musics that function with a scenius like logic are always far more innovative and interesting production wise than a thousand fucking flying lotus beats.
In fact the choice of producers perfectly illustrates this point - people like Scratcha & Terror are feted by the futurebassbullshit mob above other, arguably better, producers in their respective genres because their music is seen as more complicated/avant/futuristic/whatever.
Its the exact same ideological position as the proponents of IDM took in opposition to supposedly lumpen house/techno/hardcore/jungle and there's arguably a class/race basis to it. I probably need to work on articulating these thoughts better.
I think Terror and Scratcha get a lot of love cos they put a load of work in and get people looking in from else where. They work hard and have a good sound. There are a ton of ace grime producers about but most of them dont put in the effort to get out there more.
I wouldn't call this lot inteligent producers either. I kinda know what you're getting at but its just a load of blog house fodder to promot everyone involved and open doors into new areas. Some of its alright and the artists involved have a load of killer stuff on their own.
I think there is a snobery element to the people hating on this kinda thing too. I mean you see it in uk funky as well, a load of stuff gets hated on just cos it comes out on a dubstep label. Cos that aint real enough any more I mean wtf, no one else is putting it out so why not go for it. Its inclusive its a good look its uniting peoples music and giving it a wider audiance. Fodder will come out of it but there is fodder all over the shop in Gucci's catalouge or whoever anyway.
This comp isnt the best example of it working well but its not a bad effort. I dont think it takes away from how shit hot Gucci sounds in his own stuff its just some people trying to have fun with his stuff.
plus gucci has been involved with mad decent for a while
he's been on a load of their original productions from their artsist so its not like he's gettin abused here. He's involved and lets it happen. Plus its only one mixtape out of about a million Gucci tapes and he reps all those killer underground hip-hop guys on all of them. I think there is room for both, I dig bits of both. they both need to do a fuck load of quality control tho lol.
Makes me appreciate
Lex Luger, Drumma Boy, Swizz, Boi 1-da, etc. even more.
Let's talk a bit about Tha Carter IV
I've been listening to 'Six Foot Seven Foot' a lot today - it is fucking hot stuff. Weezy's sounding decidedly less, well, wheezy, and seriously fired up. He's great on Romans Revenge 2.0 as well, you can hear the difference in his voice there as well. I'm really excited about this record, which is funny cos I couldn't have given less of a shit about Rebirth and I pretty much ignored I Am Not A Human Being. It's apparently gonna drop in March, which I doubt but it would be amazing if it did.
Six Foot Seven is pretty cool.
Kinda feels like a sequel to A Milli or something though.
I'm pretty reserved about his upcoming output, he lost a lot of momentum the last couple years. I find myself only wanting to listen to tha Carter 2 if I need a Wayne kick nowadays.
Ah
yea cant get enough off 6 foot 7 foot, just the hook itself has been stuck in my head all day. The grath retake sounds pretty good as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxDWfEazgOA
He's court ordered to remain sober for something like three years
If he doesn't fuck up, I predict mad productivity and a high level of quality. Rebirth was the definition of a drug addled fuck up who doesn't know right from left anymore.
FREE EP
Roc C & Guilty Simpson - Ox 2 The D
http://soulprofessa.bandcamp.com/
Looking forward to Rittz's mixtape.
He's pretty similar to Yelawolf (not just because they're both white and from the south) but I like the style.
The tunes leaked so far are great:
Rittz - High Five http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-0HCNqOkc4
Rittz - Full of Shit (ft. Yelawolf & Big KRIT) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acGoBuMH7CA
Five points if you can tell the difference between Rittz and Yela on that track!
Yeah
I'm also looking forward to 'White Jesus'. What he's put out so far has been great, so here's hoping for more of the same.
This is nice
I love Yelawolf and Big KRIT together, they compliment each other so well. Have you heard the Yela remix of Hometown Hero?
Slaughterhouse - Sun Doobie
http://hypetrak.com/2011/02/slaughterhouse-sun-doobie/
Glad I found this thread
I used to love listening to loads of early Dizzee, Rodney P, Fallacy, J5, early Nextmen, Phi Life.. now Giggs (a bit too gangsta!) and Chiddy Bang (a bit too poppy!) Any recommendations would be much appreciated... Thanks
Here's a few.

DJ QUIK - Luv Of My Life
http://www.mediafire.com/?3i4uim36rtdb21m
YES
Fortilive
Has a new album out & its up for free download. Someone just posted this up on twitter, only heard a few his tracks before, quite impressed so far.
http://www.2dopeboyz.com/2011/02/01/fortilive-i-vs-i-album/
Looks like a nu metal album cover doesnt it?
Sounds good, !llmind is an excellent producer. You should check out his lp with Skyzoo from last year called The Tape Deck, his beats are juiced on that album.
Speakers on Blast
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffryyLUX4Ws
Yea, good point!!
if you was a judge a book by its cover kinda guy, you'd thinking there's some kinda linkin park collab on there.
Speakers on blast sounding good, ill def be checking out more off his work. Its just a shame his release's are so hard to get hold off in uk.
Money Making Jam Boys - The Prestige: Jam Boy Music
New free album from Black Thought (The Roots) and his new crew of Dice Raw, PORN, Truck North and STS who have all been heavily featured throughout the last few Roots albums.
http://www.10deep.com/MMJBMIXTAPE/
Sounds excellent so far, here's the first single:
http://vimeo.com/17327712
and another standout
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdYHJGI1-wE
nice
been listening to a lot of The Roots recently so I need to hear this. About time Black Thought came through with that solo effort though...
This is more of him putting on his crew than a solo thing.
I think he is still working on an all out solo lp though. He sounds pretty fresh on that guest verse he did on Apollo Kids
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKRqO_LPwic
Old man's still got it.
I always a bit meh about Black Thought.
Decent enough MC but kinda workmanlike and lacking charisma, I always preferred Malik B. This sounds pretty good though.
I've heard that argument about Thought for years.
I can't really argue against it much, but he really can get ferocious when he wants. And I have loved him since my yoots. I will say that the Roots have always done a good job of getting good features and guest spots, which helps mix it up. And yah, Malik B is awesome.
After hearing this,
i think i can just forgive raekwon for appearing on that bieber track
http://soundcloud.com/thequietus/raekwon-rock-n-roll-feat
This is fairly brilliant:
http://www.sp-33.com/
'Escape From Tha Carter - the music of Lil Wayne chopped up and used as samples mainly over the top of John Carpenter's score. I thought it was just going to be a mash up album but the way the vocals are manipulated is great.
Squadda B - I Smoke Becasue I Dont Care About Death
http://greenovamusic.bandcamp.com/album/i-smoke-because-i-dont-care-about-death
Pretty sweet, a lot of it anyway. Lazy hazy flows.
gets good at about track five
first few are arse
best album title I've seen in a while
anyone checked that out yet?
'tis free I'm pretty impressed with it. They have a mad raw spaced out atmosphere about them. Its a good look.
I DL'd it but forgot about it.
Checking it now. What are your standouts?
Pretty much anything after track 5 onwards
One maybe two tracks after that that aint as hot but its all pretty solid from then on. I've never heard of them before either, I just got the suggestion of a goon I know that makes jokes about dubstep a lot lol.
J Rocc is finally releasing a proper solo album!
http://www.stonesthrow.com/news/2011/02/jrocc-some-cold-rock-stuf
I didn't know this was happening. It all looks a bit odd with 3 possible bonus discs, of which you get one randomly. Sounds kinda fun, but also a tad annoying for people who like to get annoyed by trivialities. Oh, and as you'd expect from Stones Throw, it all looks quite nice and there's a track to listen to and download and that.
This looks awesome.
Stones Throw knows how to handle business.
juicy j - FLIP THAT BITCH A FEW TIMES - produced by lexluger
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sjHv2eIlJY
Juicy J & Lex Luger did a whole mixtape together.
It's called Rubba Band Business. It's pretty good.
nice one
I'll have a search, I love the beat and that first verse.
DL'd Rubba Band Business last week.
Its way long and maybe half good.
sums up most hip-hop mixtapes tbf
Wiz Khalifa
He's been rapping over some pretty chart-intended beats of late (Black & Yellow,Roll Up), which would almost lead one to deem him a sellout..but for the fact that he still raps unashamedly about weed.
He's pretty good still.
it's not as much the beats, maybe,
his chorus hooks are so darn catchy too.
Wiz is definitely aiming for superstardom
have you heard this autotune atrocity:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkZADLzZMcU (I actually quite like it...)
But then he's never been the most interesting rapper anyway. This my fave tune:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7g62K6nhLg
Mostly because the beat is great.
I was going to post all of what you said here,
pretty much verbatim. Mezmorized is awesome.
I fucking love Black Yellow
Even though the Steel Curtain sent my Jets home in the playoffs.
It is massive - that chorus is huge.
NinjaSonik's
new mixtape "when anxiety attacks" up for dowload here http://www.ninjasonik.com/ Sounds awesome so far, highlights ave to be Global Ft. Spank Rock & We Dont Give a Fuck Ft. Trouble Andrew, Johnny Nelson & NineLives The Cat
New Stalley mixtape:
Lincoln Way Heights
http://mishkanyc.bandcamp.com/album/presents-stalley-lincoln-way-nights-intelligent-trunk-music
Taking it away from mixtapes etc
What is your favourite label?
For me personally it is/was Loud Records with Wu-Tang, Big Pun, Mobb Deep, M.O.P etc with an honourable mentions to La Face as well as Def Jam and its many imprints.
Tough one,
currently its Stones Throw, their products are always well thought out from front to back, and they usually only put forth quality tunes.
From 90s I'd have to go with what you mentioned, but maybe add in So So Def, Jive, Duck Down, Priority, and of course Rap-a-lot.
I also think that my choices were somewhat influenced by your
90's thread as it got me revisiting albums like The Infamous and Capital Punishment, just made me realize how brilliant there output was through that era.
I'll be sure to check out some more Stones Throw stuf
Stones Throw is a mixed bag,
they have a lot of soul, funk and electronic stuff too, which is all stuff I love. They did Madvillain and tons of J Dilla stuff for a reference, its also the label that Madlib puts most his stuff through.
OK, gotcha
That puts it in context and big fan of soul/funk as well so will be browsing through it all
Check this out for starters
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stones-Throw-Years-Peanut-Butter/dp/B000KJTG24/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1297433605&sr=8-2
Chuck in some backpacker hip hop
I can't be living without Rawkus (Funcrusher Plus, Black on Both Sides, Black Star, Internal Affairs, The Big Picture) or Def Jux (The Cold Vein, Labor Days, Fantastic Damage, Deadringer)
Yeah, there both basically dead now, but they had a few excellent years.
Definitely.
It was a small window of time, but they basically spawned a couple stylistic offshoots of hip-hop.
Always hated that backpacker tag.
'real' hip hop. LOL.
Def Jux will always be my favourite hip-hop label
Definitely Stones Throw
If not for the music, then for the way their packaging, the way they treat fans (lots of free samples) and just generally putting a lot of great stuff.
I don't like everything Decon puts out but their releases by Freddie Gibbs, Gangrene and Black Milk last year were pretty unfuckwithable.
Atmosphere are bringing out new stuff
http://pitchfork.com/news/41473-atmospheres-slug-talks-new-album/
New tune sounding good!!
http://www.earmilk.com/2011/02/22/atmosphere-just-for-show-new-single/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=Atmosphere+-+Just+For+Show+%5BNew+Single%5D
J. Cole.
Friday Night Lights. Engaging lyrics and excellent production. Can't wait till he drops the album.
Free Giggs Mixtape
http://www.sn1giggs.com/
Might be alright, I kinda dig his lazy flow. UK styleeeeee
^suprisingly solid
the beats are mad if you can get on board with his slow mo flow.
charli 2na- go go gadget produced by rusko...
www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKHSdOdNYXg
one of the best things either of those have been involved in probably, sounds kinda hyphy.
This is my worst nightmare realised in musical form.
I posted that tape up thread.
Think International Jones is just a new name for Fiend. I like it but Absolutely is the clear stand out.
You heard the full lp yet?
I will soon for sure.
I think Royce Da 5'9" (worst rap name ever?) is my favorite of the Slaughterhouse crew, with Joell right behind. Check out Royce's mixtape called The Bar Exam from 2007, Bar Exam 2 was pretty good too.
Stuff like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEglpXskeH0
and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PE0WMQTfKvs from the album to get (Death is Certain) if you like the Bar Exam tapes.
I know it's kind of lame
But I want something like Odd Future (Tyler, the Creator, Earl) with not such profane/crude lyrics.
mtfu
swag.
Try the Mellohype stuff.
It's way less filthy than Tyler/Earl. Or Casey Veggies who used to be in Odd Future, his tape Sleeping in Class is good.
But yeah you should really just listen to the proper swag shit.
New Waka
http://www.datpiff.com/Trap-A-Holics__DJ_Holiday_Waka_Flocka__Salute_Me.m201216.html
Track three made me do a double take I thought he'd made a track with Superisk for a second lol
Its alright so far, not been blown away yet.
I'm a bit late on this one, but what do peeps think of the new Pusha T
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2a1tl3WCNY
Good, not great. Really looking forward to the mixtape & album though.
Dig.
I kept waiting for some kind of substantial drop that never came, teased me a little bit.
It's grown on me
pretty great after all.
What do people think of Odd Future?
I realise I'm probably late to the game here, but I've just been reading up on them this weekend. Tyler the Creator is pretty strong, not sure of some of the others. 'Yonkers' is cool.
Oh yeah, Swag. Hot ass beat clap etc.
<3
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4264751
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4278549
Goblin has every right to be fucking insane.
Personally I think Hodgy Beats is the best rapper.
The MellowHype tapes are excellent, especially the first one.
Tyler is the 'face' of the group now though, and probably rightly so, he has the personality for it. And Yonkers is incredible, I think Goblin is going to blow nearly all other hip-hop away this year. Apparently Hodgy's album is out after.
Beans- End It All
Sounds good so far
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlIe43qfLE4
Quite liking
what I'm hearing so far as well
link me to some standouts on youtube?
i'd given up hope for this years ago.
Sweet, I checked out 'Clap' as well & that was a jam
'Come On Baby' was great when it came out too. Will get on this.
Yeah, so it's real good.
Cheers.
Mz Bratt

UK pop/hip-hop, pretty cool. I've got a soft spot for her shes a quality grime MC at times and this track is pretty fun.
Fashawn- Higher Learning 2?
Pretty dope. J. Cole on the mic and decks frequently.

New Blu album coming - No York
No release date set for this, but I'm pretty hyped as 2007's Below The Heavens was one of the best Hip Hop albums of the latter half of the decade.
Production courtesy of Madlib, FlyLo, Edan, Bilal & Daedelus helps sweeten the deal.
*There will be another full length with Exile too.
This should be excellent.
TBH, Below the Heavens didn't grab me much at the time but has slowly become a favorite of mine over the last few years. He's deceptively slick on the mic, there's definitely some 'rewind that back' moments throughout that lp. Extremely soulful soulquarian style production from Exile too.
Awesome
I love Below the Heavens, such a consistently good album.
Cool post from Cocaine Blunts on XXL's tips for 2011:
http://www.cocaineblunts.com/blunts/?p=6747
Obvs already feeling Lil B & Yela but hadn't heard any Meek Mill or Kendrick Lamar before and they sound cool.
I don't get the Lil B love
He's got personality coming out of his ears but the music is mostly awful. Even if a load of it is meant to be a joke... he's almost like a hip-hop Flight of the Concords tribute act.
Check these tunes:
Sending Shots http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3Mxhsgjp9A
Chase the Rain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I-hDgEKSW8
Blue Flame Remix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT3XBu2RkZo
Dude can rap proper, he just doesn't want to most of the time. I admit that its frustrating sifting through a load of half assed drug experiments to find the gems, especially, as these tunes ably demonstrate, he can make razor sharp focused bangers if he's so inclined (i mean check that beat on Chasing the Rain!!).
But in a industry full of rappers desperately seeking a major label deal and a ton of money it's nice to have artists who literally wouldn't give a fuck. I guess it's just about how much you buy into his personality. At first I liked the idea of Lil B more than the reality but repeated exposure and the excitement of finding a great tune has won me over.
But then i'm a sucker for these kind of artists as my 3gb of Wiley related material will attest.
haha
Yeah the Wiley factor... I'll check out those suggestions for sure cheers. He's just hard work. A load of fun to watch but hard work.
(O)verly (D)edicated
Was Kendrick's tape from last year. I rated it, haven't given it a lot of time though.

Main Attrakionz – ‘Who Am I’ (Prod. By Babe Rainbow)
Really like this.
Pretty unique sound they have. Haze rap.
I think the word is
'dope'. Literally.
Really like this.
The Raekwon equivalent to Apollo Kids
Nothing specific wrong with it but it does feel like him going through the motions a bit after how amazing OB4CL2 was
That track with Estelle would be fantastic with a better hook though
Inspectah Deck is brilliant on it and the beat is cracking, that chorus/hook is so weak though
if that's meant to describe
Apollo Kids (nothing wrong with it but going through motions) as well as the new Rae album, I'd disagree with you totally, Apollo Kids is the best thing Ghost has done since at least Fishscale (possibly Supreme Clientele).
Controversially, I think I prefer AK as a solo Wu effort to OB4CL2. Just a little bit, but it's not got a bad track on it, it's punchy and full of great hooks... OB4CL2 has quite a few skippable tracks.
Max B - Money Make Me Feel Better
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HzI2MRint8
I really like the melody on this one, beat beat is a bit clunky/boring and the bars dont do much for me yet. But I'll come back to it.
its growing on me more...
anyone got any Max B recomendatiosn are can look out for? I've heard about him before but I've got no idea about releases. I think the only things I've heard about him apart from the odd mention is in a Zomby interview.
Never heard of him.
Has a very 50 Cent/Loyd Banks type flow. Even the hook sounds like 50.
yeah he does
this track at least has a pretty stoned hazy vibe to it as well, I kinda like that. If I find anything good I'll bump the thread with it.
Young L - Loud Pockets

raaaaaaaaaaaaw beat feeling it, mixtape on the DL now, link under the vid.

No hemroids, I got lumps out the ass
I liked the Young L.E.N. tape from last year so will check this.
You know he's in the Pack with Lil B? Don't know if they're still going though.
thats where I know his name from!
the Young L.E.N. tape thats on my hardrive somewhere still, I enjoyed bits of that. I've only had chance to play the first half or so of this new one the first four tracks are really solid. I didn't know he was in a crew with Lil B no, I don't know anything about him at all really.
I'm enjoying his beats more than his rapping mind
yeah wasn't expecting the shit at the end of the mixtape
acoustic-auto-tune hmmmm
Dunno where else to post this, so I'll post this here:
'snot really 2011 hip hop though. But whatever. http://www.stonesthrow.com/news/2011/03/mf-doom-operation-doomsday-lunchbox
Basically, Stones Throw are reissuing Operation: Doomsday in MEGALUXURY packaging and it looks so, so good. I can't afford it. Maybe you can. Maybe you'd like to buy it for me. Or maybe you wouldn't. Maybe you'd like to keep it for yourself. That'd be just like you, y'know. Greedy smeg.
Sorry dan,

Posting this because some has to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YZpbYqOw4o
While one's always keen to hear a bit of Sly, one can't help feeling you've got the wrong thread.
Are these guys all signed to Shady Records now?
Some sort of shitty posse cut:
Yelawolf, Slaughterhouse & Eminem - 2.0 Boys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCW31JjiRhw
Yah, they inked it a couple weeks back.
Although thats awesome for them as far as exposure goes, I cant help but be a little bummed by it. Shady Records is not quality and every thing good these guys do now will inevitably have an Eminem guest spot (like 2.0 Boys) or something lame like that. Unless Dre produces it, I cant get behind the production on the label.
We'll see how it plays out of course and I don't want to be all Debbie Downer before an actual release, but I'm very skeptical.
Having said all that, Royce sounds pretty nice here, Yela too.
They have a history of leaving artists to rot too
Hopefully Yela's album isn't pushed back 7 years then released on some kinda graveyard label.
eugh. Really not feeling this.
The whole thing has a kinda naff dated vibe about it. I can't help but cringe whenever I hear Eminem on a track these days.
Still Yela's verse is good so fingers crossed for minimum Eminem involvement in his album.
So the new Pharoahe Monch - W.A.R. is finally released this month
Really looking forward to this, he has never released a bad album solo or with O.K.
2 tracks released so far:
'Clap (One Day)'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgbZa4HVv3g
& 'Shine' - I could only find a version that cuts out before the full length

like this
MED has been on form recently - his contributions to the last Medicine Show album were among the standouts for me and I read somewhere he'd recorded a load of tracks with Madlib for another instalment in the series. Looking forward to his next solo LP.

No way!

that Shady Bambino Project album is great
If Juicy J's flow wasn't wank this would be shit hot
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8fA-DepWG4
He stutters stitled shat on this beat and it still sounds kinda cool though. So big up Lex I guess...
You dissing Juicy J? I don't think that's permissable.
Plus he's repping Bombay Sapphire
yeah
I like him here though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sjHv2eIlJY well in the verses anyway, the hook isn't to hot. I don't think the gin track works.
^suprisingly
the beat is shit here but Juciy is good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgR4jYqjpOs I mean a ballance would be nice but whatever, this is hip-hop right?

Its those horns, they automatically make you go to the memory bank and reminisce. So emo.
Tune
Liking the new album a lot - i mean it's massively over produced & a little *too* emo, but then so was MBDTF and that was the best-thing-ever. Cheers for putting me on to it.
How have I never heard this???
Too good.
Nice one!
Yah so...
not excited about the new Travis Barker hip hop lp at all, but this new one is pretty firey. Mainly because it features 3 of the speediest rappers around and has Lil Jon as a hypeman. I always thought Yelawolf aped Twistas style/delivery so its interesting to hear them on the same track together.

Gave this a shot.
Wasn't in the mood and its not really my sort of thing. Sorry bro.

Haven't had a chance to listen, but whadd'ya think?
Update: It's good
Not 'We Got It 4 Cheap Volume 2' level, but pretty much a no brainer for Clipse fans.
Seems pretty alright, there are some clunkers.
He sounds nice over that Can I Live preemo beat, not as good as Jay though.
I'm not big on the fiddy song 'Raid'
Anyway, it's one of the better mixtapes i've heard this year, even if it is a little uneven.
Not a classic but some strong tracks on there.
It's also refreshingly short at only 12 tracks.
Main Attrakionz
http://www.factmag.com/2011/03/23/main-attrakionz-loud-pack/
Really interested in these kids atm.
me too
they've just dropped another free one: http://greenovamusic.bandcamp.com/album/dope-since-91 not heard it yet mind, hopefuly its fressssssh.
All over this.
Wiz Khalifa's album is completely dope.
The beats are awesome. Similar to some of the stuff on Kush & Orange Juice but more chilled and with more vocal hooks. Roll Up and Black & yellow weren't very representative singles.
Really?!
The first half is solid, but there are a good 4-5 tracks near the end I thought were horrible.
No Sleep and Fly Solo
are the two songs that I do dislike from the second half of the album. Even at that, I think Get Your Shit, Rooftops and Top Floor balance out the shitness of those two songs.
Is this the new LP you're talking about?
Or the new mixtape?
Clams Casino
Clams is making some of the best beats in hip-hop right now (Lil B, Main Attrakionz) and has just released a free mixtape of his instrumentals. I'd suggest you grab it while you can.
http://www.mediafire.com/?rj1opi3oa3r8l24
It sounds like Twin Peaks in space. That good.
good call
AE chatted about it here: http://www.alwayseverything.co.uk/post/3812702919/download-clams-casino-mixtape I forgot to post it. Lil B tracks sound so much better without Lil B lol. Main Attrakionz are killing it right now.

I really really like this lot
The production is definitely the best part as well (as with Young L below), and it seems like they kinda know it as the vocals seem to pretty low in the mix most of the time. Seriously cotch music though, good stuff.

Been listening to this mixtape a bit this week
I really like his production (even though this one reminds me a bit too much of Royal T cos of the Nintendo noises, but that's hardly deliberate I guess) but I struggle with his MCing - he's pretty much just Soulja Boi but like trying a bit too hard. I'd love to get hold of the instrumentals though!

Lil Wayne ft Rick Ross - John
This rules. Favourite moments so far:
1) "I GOTTA CHOPPER IN THE CAR...I GOTTA CHOPPER IN THE CAR...I GOTTA CHOPPER IN THE CAR" Still can't decide if Rick means a knife or a helicopter. Really hope it's the latter.
2) The return of Lil Wayne's YAAAAWWWWH (2:28)
3) I'm fuckin' a girl she got her legs on my neck, I got pussy mouth and ass call that bitch triple threat"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLZyvwHSAEw
Apparently chopper is a gun
now I look really white.
Yeah this is fucking great!
That YouTube link is slowed down... the actual track is even more of a monster. I love the way Wayne can't help but play hypeman during RAWSSS's verse. 6' 7' was really exciting as well - Tha Carter IV is going to be shit hot isn't it?

RR in a wheelchair?!
have we discussed Baby Pun yet?
Big Pun's son, obviously. It's not often hip-hop progeny amount to much when they try their hands at musical careers, but Pun Jr's verse here is pretty impressive imo (even if the track itself isn't all that):

he's also going to feature on the forthcoming Cormega album, apparently.

Lil B announces new album is titled "I'm Gay"
On the subject (seriously it's one of the more ridiculous rants I've read in a while):
Lil B addressed the subject of his sexuality in an interview with Complex. "It's a touchy subject. I respect the hell out of gays and the gay community. I'm not a gay man. I don't agree with sex with another man or fucking another man or giving blow jobs to another guy. That's not my thing. I'd rather fuck a girl, fuck her in her ass, fuck her in the mouth or something."
He continued, explaining, "People get scared when they hear the gay word, but when you truly know yourself, you gonna be good. Say for instance you're watching a porno, right. And, you're jacking off and shit, and some gay shit pops up. And you're like, 'Oh, shit!' Either you're gonna look at that shit, or you're not gonna look at it and you're not gonna give a fuck about it. Like, some gay shit can pop up on me, and I don't give a fuck about it. I'm like, 'Oh, that's that gay shit. Get that shit off. Back to the bitches.' But some muthafuckers are in denial. Some dudes are really in denial. They're like, 'What's that? Ohhhh!' And they hate themselves for that. They're like, 'What's wrong with me?' You feel me? And these are motherfuckers that's around us. That's not saying shit. So, it's like, I'm a faggot because I'm so not a faggot. I can say I'm a faggot. I can say I'm the gayest bitch on Earth. And I'm so not gay, it's obvious. I know from my deepest core that I'm very far from gay. So I can say I'm the bitch queen that fucks cows. I'm not."
Incredible. Can't argue with dude's logic.
He is the bitch queen afterall.
That is the most wonderful thing I've read this year
What a guy.
Oh, that's that gay shit. Get that shit off. Back to the bitches.

Curren$y & Alchemist - Covert Coup FREEEEE EP

Yeah, have you heard the Gangrene record? One of my hidden gems from last year.
Thats one of the last records I need to round out my 2010
hip hop collection.
Kanye didnt even crack my top 10 from last year. That lp 'Everythings Berri' by AG has slid into my top 5, as well as Roc Marciano 'Marcberg'. Old mens putting in work.

Anyone feeling the Rittz tape?
You can get it here: http://www.djbooth.net/index/mixtapes/entry/rittz-white-jesus/
I'm not usually a fan of overly technical MCs but I think this is great. Rittz has more of an effortless Twista style vibe than Yelawolf and less of the Southern gothic vibe. I think DJ Burn One is a really underrated producer and he provides some great beats here. All in all solidly enjoyable.
Cant get past that cover, so bad.
Its hard when dude looks so lame, why does he have to look so lame? Forces me to judge. But he is skilled for sure. I like the tape after a couple listens. Burn One is great.
You like the Rich Boy tape '12 Diamonds'? Has some heat on it. Cant get this song out of my head atm:
All I Know

Yeah he does look proper lame.
Just a haircut and a shave and dude would look sort of acceptable.

E-40 - Fuck em
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31gBMLApCxg&feature=channel_video_title
TUNE~!
Haha,
man I still have friends from the bay area (that are HUGE bay area rap fans) that cant stand e-40. He really takes some time to get used to. He's just so uncoordinated with his rhymes and has that weird voice/language. I've liked him for years now but haven't really felt his last couple LP's as he was just trying to get a hit. I think his newest 4 album series is pretty awesome, he seems much more comfortable in his old age just rapping and being weird. Sometimes you can hear him running out of breath, sometimes he can jumble too many words in a bar and sometimes not enough, its kind of all part of the appeal I think. Seems like he's just out there having a good time, trying a ton of different things.
Try this one out, its more sinister and gritty:
43 (ft B-Legit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctZFVcuqQ5U
Thing is, he's released over 80 songs in 12 months, there's bound to be something for most people to enjoy, unless you just don't like e-40's flow/voice... which of course is completely understandable.
This ones got some nice summery vibes to it:
Lookin Back (ft Devin The Dude)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnDJ5dtyzZI
Nothing over your head.
I don't think that anyone's a better or more sophisticated music fan for liking certain things. Everyone's got their own tolerance levels and classifiers that sway them one way or another. Not sure I consider him a bad rapper either, just less concerned with sounding pristine or 'on point' at all times, dudes creative as anyone tho.
Hot Sauce Committee
is out there now..
...and
it's not very good. They sound fucking depressed or something.
My thoughts on Raekwon - Shaolin Vs Wu Tang
Duplicated from the 2011 Recommended thread:
None of the hype that surrounded OB4CL2 but still really good regardless. Kind of a grower of sorts. Maybe he shouldn't have released it so soon after OB4CL2, but between that, this & Cocainism Vol2 (Mixtape) he has released 3 extremely solid releases in a short time. Dude's on a late career roll. This falls more in line with the early Wu sound despite Rza not making an appearance.

Dart School
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Bbea3joHHI
That review :'D
I've somehow yet to hear this record, but I think you're right - he's been TOO prolific recently and that's killed his buzz a bit. I was similarly confused by the lukewarm reception to Apollo Kids... poor promotion maybe...
Yah bad promotion.
I think this is better than Apollo Kids personally. I've revisited it a lot more anyway.
Is that even a review?
I think its solidly enjoyable if a little unspectacular. Really he's the only Wu member left making decent records.
Although I don't think I ever got round to checking out Apollo Kids after the atrocity of Ghostdini and Big Doe Rehab.
My thoughts on the Big KRIT tape,
lifted from the Big Krit thread that 2 people posted in:

Its excellent. Really low-key, introspective and soulful. Do I dare call this a conscious record? I thought he would go down the road of huge trunk rattlers and candy hooks like he did successfully on about 1/3 of Krit Wuz Here, but he went the other way with it, the 'Hometown Hero' way with it. Probably wont bode well for radio-pop friendly crossover-ability but it makes for a superb laid-back thought provoking listen.
There really isn't one track as immediately catchy as 'Country Shi*' or 'Just Touched Down' off the past tape but there's some stellar slow burners that are still unfolding interesting layers to these ears. Like; the way the beat switches up on the last minute of 'Highs & Lows' and turns into a 'Spottieottiedopaliscous'-esque funky sex-infused romp, the pre-chorus into the Erykah Badu sampled hook on 'Kings Blues', the guitar/sax/scratching/keyboard flourishes on 'Kings Blues', the restraint in the hook on 'Time Machine', the weirdness of Amtrak, the poignancy of 'Another Naive Individual Glorifying Greed & Ecouraging Racism' and the deep smooth rolling bass throughout. There really is a lot to be appreciated here.
There's a boat load of nods to early Outkast on this tape which makes sense cos he's capturing a similar vibe/emotion/aesthetic. The overall theme of the record seem to be "Git Up, Git Out & Git Something." Plenty of the drum sounds are pretty much carbon copies of Organized Noize's. Check out the track 'Lions & Lambs' (one of the standouts imo) http://youtu.be/2ny1711Xw5A and compare that to Outkast 'Jazzy Belle' http://youtu.be/IW-9eOPAWdA The snare is the same, the vocal sample similar, the scratching, even some of the cadence matches. I don't say any of this is a bad thing, I think he pulls it off successfully throughout all of Return Of 4Eva.
Really good, and really free, no reason for any hip-hop fan not to have this.
Oh, and...
the album art is good:

Blitz The Ambassador - Native Sun
Live band recorded hip-hop, very African. Sometimes it feels like he's rapping over afro-beat, some of its rapped in Guanan(?). Kind of like a good Wyclef/K'naan (lazy comparison). Positive vibes n such.
He has chosen to stream his full LP on youtube with some accompanying visuals of Africa.

Digging it so far. Guests include Talib Kweli, Big K.R.I.T, Freddie Gibbs, The Game amongst others.
I've been neglecting this thread,
mainly because the spam bots have taken it over and its now ridiculously ridiculous to look at. I'll start another one for the second half of the year soon.
Post up your first half highlights on here before June 1 (if you want) and then we can start with a fresh thread after that.
Cool good idea, I've been the same thing.
Given that I've only been listening to hip-hop for the last 2 months its a shame this thread has been massacred.
Saying that my top 5 are no different to what most on heres top 5 will be.
1) Curren$y + Alchemist - Covert Coup
2) DJ Quik - The Book Of David
3) Clams Casino - S/T Mixtape
4) Squadda B- I Smoke Because I Don't Care About Death
5) BIG K.R.I.T - Reaturn of 4eva
Nothing original there, but they really are the best releases this year.
New Cam'ron & Vado tape Guns 'n Butta is good.
Nothing new I suppose. Strong workmanlike beats, Cam acting the asshole and pulling off a stream of ace punchlines. I think Vado is a strong addition to Dipset and although he doesn't have anywhere near Cam's charisma he hold up well.
Basically if you like Dipset you'll like this.
Bits I've really enjoyed this year.
Big K.R.I.T- Return of 4eva
Dj Quik- Book of David
Pete Rock & Camp Lo- 80 Blocks From Tiffany's
Curren$y & Alchemist- Covert Coup
Self Scientific- Trials of the Blackhearted Ep
Reks- Rythmic Eternal King Supreme
This year has been the first delving a little deeper into hip hop so been familiarising myself with classics and some newer underground stuff.
Stuff life:
Pete Rock & Cl Smooth- The Main Ingredient
Blame One- Days Chasing Days
Fashawn- Boy Meets World
Gangrene- Gutter Water
M.O.P- Firing Squad
Big Punisher- Capital Punishment
Mainly all down to the threads on this site. Cheers guys.
Forgot to mention, there's some well peachy stuff on that
Clams Casino instrumental EP as well as the Oddisee instrumental album (but that was last year i think).
Good stuff in there.
Haven't heard that Reks yet.
It's pretty good.
The lead single off it is pure fire.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF7AU12LMB0
Vintage preemo beat too which is always good.
Scratch that.
It's really really good. Recommended highly.
Think I might want that.
Heard a another song or two off it but kind of forgot it was out. I need some hard ny rap going into the summer.
Sick track.
Hate to mention more OFWGKTA
but listening a lot to Mike G's and Hodgy Beats's mixtapes. Very good.
Also, I slept on Dom Kennedy for a long time, something about him rubbed me the wrong way, but his latest mixtape 'The Original Dom Kennedy' is very good.
That, and everything Lunice and Lunice-related that I can find.
and...
sorry to do this, but at least it's not entirely shamelessly...

News on the next Freddie Gibbs mixtape:
http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2011/05/freddie-gibbs-preps-mixtape-w-all-star-cast/
K.R.I.T. on production! Let's hope that happens. I guess for me Return Of 4eva is probably my favourite hip-hop release this year, I'm not entirely sure I've loved much else other than the Clams Casino mixtape but then again I'll probably come back to a lot of it later in the year like I always do.
Anyone know what's happened to Pill?
Was one of my favorite newer MCs but haven't much from him since The Overdose tape last year. Think he hooked up with Rozay and Maybach Music so maybe he's doing an album for them.
Looks like maybach music has a comp coming out
with all the signees and label-mates:
http://www.rap-up.com/2011/04/19/tracklisting-maybach-music-group-self-made-vol-1/
He and Gibbs need to capitalize on their semi-recent (09-10) waves of hype, times ticking.
Can't agree more with this... where is he?
He definitely doesn't get enough accolades. Sometimes I think he rivals Gucci for how crazed he is.
Elzhi's new mixtape just been posted up
Look forward to listening to this in the morning.
http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2011/05/download-elzhis-elmatic-now/
Elmatic is quite good.
Dude is a top-notch lyricist and these re-done (live band) Illmatic beats sound pretty crisp, even at 128kbps.
This caught me off-guard, I didnt expect it to be as good as it is. This is how homages should be done. Some of the songs extend out into these luscious instrumentals (World is Yours, One Love, Lifes a Bitch). The transition from the World is Yours into Represent is something special.
Any lover of Illmatic should be up on this.
Blu 'Does A Radiohead' - New album available now on bandcamp
'Jesus' - Available for $10 and to stream now. Production from Alchemist, Madlib, Hezekiah, Knxwledge, Nathan, 9th Wonder and Godlee Barnes.
*Oh, it's worth noting this isn't his upcoming 3rd album 'NoYork!'
Crap, there was meant to be a link. Here we go:

This should be free,
the sound is crap. Voice sounds like it was recorded with a built in microphone.
74u and doowhop sound alright tho. Seems like a half-baked mixtape.
Really? haven't had a chance to listen yet
The list of producers got me all excited that this was a proper little project. When I've checked it out I'll get back to ya.
if so $10 is a joke.
:( I'm feeling the music a fair bit so far, but there was no effort put into recording or mixing this was there?
A shame cos this could've been a damn solid mixtape, but really I feel a bit silly for endorsing such a shoddy product.
You were just putting it out there.
Not like you stamped it with the approval tag. You would think that someone with such huge spaces between releases would either put up a solid (free) mixtape before his release to build hype, or just stay quiet until the official release. Seems weird to charge money for a project that is so half-baked only to go ahead and charge the same amount on an official release here within the next couple months. Really dampens the anticipation. I think he thinks he's a little better than he is, his rhymes get a little self-indulgent at times, hopefully he he stays completely away from the "I'm here to save hip-hop" schtick and just raps his ass off (like he can).
Can we talk about how good Jim Jones' 'Believe In Magic' is?
The product of Pitchfork's Selector project apparently, and produced by Girl Talk. Even though it's evident in Jones' flow that the verses have been thrown together quickly, it's an absolutely irresistibile party jam. "The FBI still tracking me, still popping shit like ac-n-e, and the goons that are backing me still packing heat":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOQ7m-oU5JA
One of the best tracks I've heard this year.
I think I prefer
Jim Jones when he's just free wheelin it like this.

Looking forward to the album.
Like this.
The beat is great, i'm surprised its produced by Girl Talk, though he is just aping that classic dipset sound.
Tracks that need to drop

He puts up vinyl rips of older hard to get stuff, as well as mixes and the lark. Am i allowed to post this here? Regardless, looks wicked.
Just saw over at P4K that the Cannibal Ox joint had dropped
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLj91_iz-JM
It's called Thor's Hammer. Fairly straight forward for them to be honest, and so far I'm not liking what I've heard from Ox 2010 as much as the stuff on the solid Deuces Wild. What do people think? Does anyone care about these guys in 2011?
Gravediggaz are working on a new album!
All members from the first 2 albums are in (except Too Poetic, RIP). Thanks Odd Future?

What's the consensus on Shabazz Palaces?
Hipster fodder or genuinely interesting?
Really like this http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/12211-swerve-the-reeping-of-all-that-is-worthwhile-noir-not-withstanding/
Got a copy of it.
Like it, like the ep's too. Very different.
Genuinely interesting
Pulsating and sticky in the best possible way, and covering new sonic ground while at it. Still to hear all of Black Up, or to get really stuck into the lyrics, but they're clearly one of the best indie hip hop acts of the last couple of years.
Dude is from Digable Planets / has been the truth since the nineties
Any accusations of "hipster fodder" are coming from severely misguided people.
Yah, I'm actually really excited about the
direction that old(er) rappers/legends are going in. This guy, AG came out with my 3rd fav rap release from 2010 with "Everythings Berri", DJ Quik's continued creative streak, e-40s settling into a nice groove, Fiends new direction as International Jones, raekwon's sustained quality, etc.
For years I wondered how rap would grow up and evolve with this older dudes, but I'm starting to hear some stuff I can really get behind.
Yeah, it's definitely good to see that rappers can age way more gracefully than Jay Z
Fiend's complete 180 is definitely pretty amazing. And I still can't get over Rick Ross getting good all of a sudden. I can only see him getting better.
Only thing Jay needs to worry about at this point
is how he's gonna hang on to Beyonce.
The-Dream is so about to tap that / probably is already
Western Tinks - Hard to Keel Vol. 1

Woops

Thought I should put this in here in case anyone missed it....
I started writing a new mixtape column on DiS.
http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4142782-champion-sound-1-june-2011
Some of the stuff I wrote about is a little dated now due to the timings of when I wrote the piece, but hopefully you get the idea. It should be running every 8 weeks or so.
Nice to see some DiS hip-hop coverage.
So the Maybach album is pretty good.
They work surprisingly well together as a crew considering they were just artificially assembled by Rozay. It's mostly brash boss rap as you'd expect but there's a couple of great smoother tunes in 'Rise' and 'Play your part' and even a R&B joint featuring Jeremih which I really like.
Wale comes much harder than he ever has in the past, actually sounding convincing with his gangster stylings considering his backpack past. Not really enough Pill but he does shine when he has a chance and shows he hasn't lost it. 'Don't Let Me Go' is probably one of my favorite tunes on there with Pill actually providing an awesome chorus.
This basically tells you everything you need to know:
http://www.thefader.com/2011/05/24/by-the-numbers-maybach-music-groups-self-made-vol-1/
The Fader can't tell the difference between a top hat and a fedora :)
I only listened to that album once when the stream was up. I liked it, but I haven't gone back to it yet. Will have to do so soon, as Rozay is the man.
Yeah, who'd of thought we'd be calling him the man in 2011?
After the Correctional Officer revelations and 50 Cent beef its amazing how he rebuilt his credibility just on the basis of banging tunes.
Got the Random Axe album today
Shit goes pretty hard. Black Milk doesn't rap much on it, which is probably a good thing, Guilty, Sean P and most of the guests on it really deliver. Beats are heavy as expected, the tracks that have already leaked are the obvious singles but there are a couple of tracks where Black mixes it up a bit production wise. After a couple of listens I think I prefer this to Black Milk's last album.
Latest song leak - Chewbacca ft Roc Marciano

Just got it.
@theShipment
How are you finding the new Random Axe? Been playing it constantly, still sounding great. REVIEW JAG, but here are some of my thoughts over at KevinNottingham http://kevinnottingham.com/2011/06/14/random-axe-random-axe/
Only once through so far,
so dont want to jump too soon. Some quick ramblings:
Sounds good so far. The production is pretty herky-jerky, which is good in spurts. Black Milk never really comes off as a fluid producer, its more of a pronounced booom BANG *space* booom BAPP, than a melodic roll that he always achieves. His snares are his sig. sound and they dont disappoint here. Price and Guilty really sound great over this, nice to hear them together, kind of just wish it was them and no Black Milk rapping.
Everybody Nobody Somebody and Chewbacca are my standouts so far.
Definitely agree about Black Milk's rapping,
I almost didn't notice sometimes when he had a verse sometimes, kinda washes over you compared to Guilt and P. Everybody Nobody Somebody is my fav track at the moment, for some reason I get a Radiohead vibe off the production on it, though not sure people would agree with me ha
Nope,
no Radiohead vibes at all. This should be the only thread free of Radiohead references and comparison, no offense of course.
I feel like Danny Browns verse needed to be about 16 more bars.
If any of get the chance to go this, unlikely as in US, DO IT!!
http://www.rockthebells.net/
Look at that line up, just doesn't get much better. I already have my tickets and already very, very excited. Went last year and is sooo good.
Give Mac Miller a shiv to the kidney for me, yah?
Absolutely
Before or after I take a piss on him?
Both, natch.
Childish Gambino
So people are actually listening to that guy? It's a cold, cold world.
New Nas - Nasty
Obviously everyone who cares will have already heard this, but Nas returns from his longest hiatus since 'I Am...' by casually owning Salaam Remi's hook-free stripped back beat & recalling (to my ears) 2003's 'Made You Look'. It's pretty good.
http://soundcloud.com/nasirjones/nasty-produced-by-salaam-remi
I gots to admit, you have to a pretty big fan to get hugely excited about a new Nas album in 2011, but it's a step in the right direction not to have a lukewarm chart-baiting (but ultimately unsuccessful) lead single produced by Alex da Kid & ft. Skylar Grey.
Yah, real nice. Nas still has it in him to make something
special I think.
Actually, this is great.
Can't take my finger off that orange play button.
If he can knuckle down like this for a whole album it'll be a classic.
Get in here fellas:
