there was an established line of demarcation between 'necessary' and 'unnecessary' music writing. Foolish of me.
If you don't think it's good getting exclusive mixes done for indie-centric DiS from people like Julio Bashmore, Blue Daisy and Cyrus (forthcoming) then fair enough, but I'm pretty excited about it and plan to continue commissioning them whether they're necessary or not.
I agree Soundcloud's great, but quite expensive if you want the capability to build up a library of mixes. Mixcould doubled my upload rights and I can keep the whole mix series up there in perpetuity.
The indie kids need to know about this stuff or they'll be stuck with The View in no time.
I missed this one somehow, I keep forgetting DiS' front page :S
That Kyle Hall 12" on Hyperdub is something else and Mount Kimbie kick ass.
A Cyrus mix on DiS is pretty interesting haha. Last time I heard him on Kiss he had a truck load of dubs and was going b2b with Mala and Hatcha it was one of the best Kiss shows I'd heard for some time. Deep dark hard hitting beasts.
and hearing his Junk Yard pulsing out of the system was the moment I decided to get a mix from him. It sounded so good!
Space Cadet is big too. Tunes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyQ2rU2kDNE
but in terms of this column neither me or the artists contributing mixes are getting paid. It's very nearly a socialist idyll.
Although, I'm a little disapointed because I didn't read the name underneath and for a moment, thought this was about a festival!
If only - I don't think Kevin Drumm plays live anymore, and I guess neither do Eleh and Virgo.
Also, I would say in terms of mixes, I can feel a bit fatigued at times with the endless amounts of them across the web, but a) it's great to have them on DiS, and b) there aren't that many other places where mixes by non-dance artists like Kreng, for example, can happen.
that would have been a line-up and a half! I didn't know that about Drumm. Gutting: he's someone I'd really love to see live.
As far as I'm concerned DiS needs columns like Armchair Dancefloor if it is to remain remotely relevant to modern music as a whole. Much as it seems fairly in vogue to dismiss a huge chunk of DiS's editorial content on the boards, there's a fair amount of very interesting writing on the regions of music that a large number of casual 'indie' type listeners may not have bothered to investigate before. There could be more, but it's certainly a start.
Again, it's hard to say how many people really read columns like AD or Articulate Spaces, Ambient Sounds, certainly compared to the site's overall readership, but it's crucial to cover a wide range of music in detail on here. And I say this as someone who regularly reads places like RA, FACT and XLR8R for electronic music editorial.
If getting mixes up on DiS helps to encourage more people to check out the artists concerned, then so much the better. It's always a pleasure to read in any case, and if it promotes discussion then that's pretty much job done. The majority of really interesting, forward thinking music comes from these kind of regions.
Anyway, I really need to get hold of that Eleh compilation CD.
