recommend albums of 2010 (thus far)
Yet to hear/have my attention directed towards any release this year that I can get even remotely excited about.
So, along the lines of last years "2009 recommended", how about we start compiling and "^thissing" recommended albums.
The rules:
1. one album per post.
2. ^This the ones you recommend.
3. check to make sure your recommendation hasn't already been posted, before you post it yourself.
Personally, I'd prefer it if folks were sparing with their recommendations. But I ain't gonna police your ^thisses or nothing.

Yeasayer
Frightened Rabbit
Four Tet
The Irrepressibles - Mirror Mirror
I cannot stress enough how good this is. Along the lines of Antony & the Johnsons, albeit more orchestral and interesting.

You can pick more than one
just needs to be one per post. Name the others in separate posts.

It's free at the minute by the way: http://thecastofcheers.bandcamp.com

Beach House - Teen Dream
Really loving this at the moment
Its been perfect after finally tiring of veckatimest and hugnry for something similarly delicate and engaging.
Surfer Blood - Astro Coast
Efterklang - Magic Chairs
Fredrik - Trilogi
a This! for this!
I'm pleased.
Could 'Viskra' be an early contender for my favourite song of the year?
Reckon it is going to take something very special to beat it.
It is great
although I may slightly side with Milo as my favourite Fredrik song/contender for the year. Both great though.
The Unwinding Hours - The Unwinding Hours
Field Music - Field Music (Measure)
I can tell this will last me for a long time.
Such an epic album.
so good i bought it twice
record of year so far.
Gil Scott-Heron - I'm New Here
Scout Niblett - The Calcination of Scout Niblett
Hot Chip - One Life Stand
Polar Bear - Peepers
This is gorgeous, thanks for the recommendation.
i'm both scared and excited that i agree with Cronin on this record

i hate to do a grouchland
but it came out in 2009 technically
list of records recommended by DiS here:
http://drownedinsound.com/lists/recommended-records
White Hinterland - Kairos
Broken Bells / James Mercer & Brian Burton (Danger Mouse)
Really didn't rate this, unfortunately.
Not sure why. Everything sounds like it should be great, but it just didn't do it for me.
These New Puritans - Hidden
I'm liking the sound of this
Their split with Pocahaunted is pretty nice, but the stuff on their myspace is way better.
Lightspeed Champion - Life is sweet! Nice to meet you.
Colfax - Tape
very Boards of Canada - dreamy, nostalgic, all analog...beautiful stuff...
I just bought this in FLAC from your recommendation
Really great stuff! Many thanks!
Los Campesinos! - Romance is Boring
Or is that too obvious for this site?
Nothing should be too obvious
If it's good, it's good.
Daniel Durrett - Hello, Inner Sunset
genre-defying...echoes of Radiohead, Beck, Sigur Ros and none of the above...
Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra - Kollaps Tradixionelles
much much better than their last effort.
Freelance Whales - Weathervanes
it's a weird one this...
i this'd it, but i've gone of and on it like a bronko, but when it comes down to it does fit nicely between 'we have the facts and were voting yes' and 'the photo album' in the death cab... discography
Bill Fay - Still Some Light
Various Artists - Fabric: Elevator Music
Fela Kuti - Black Man's Cry: The Inspiration of Fela Kuti
Mika Vainio - Time Examined
Various Artists - Nigeria Afrobeat Special: The New Explosive Sound In 1970's Nigeria
Kath Bloom - Thin Thin Line
found this on spotify
will give it a good listen to, i saw she did a residency at Oto and a load of people raved about her, so should be nice.
Wow, how beautiful is this
She's bringing tears to my eyes, and that on first listen. *stunned*
Glad to turn people on to her.
Check out this thread from a while back,
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4248309
Some very kind soul recorded her Oto set.
Also, MIE, she's done a couple of excellent albums with Loren Connors, who I saw you were listening to on the last.fm thread, so be sure to try those.
oh lovely, i shall check that out.
thanks for the prod. yeah I've been listening to loren connors double disc retrospective of his airs on spotify. seriously beautiful stuff, and i've got his new LP with Gray on order, so I'll definitely get some more listens into this.
Shout Out Louds - Work
Lookbook - Wild at Heart
The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night
Ellie Goulding's "Light" album is quite impressive and it leaves me waiting for more! I wrote a review of it on my blog http://hellofromlisbon.blogspot.com/
Lindstrom and Christabelle-Real Life Is No Cool
Vampire Weekend-Contra.
wasn't as impressed
couldn't get as inspired by it as my friends.
Dag for Dag - Boo
I'd have gone for Beach House but many got there first. Dag for Dag's "Boo" is a very good straight forward indie-pop album. Worth a check out both on album and live too.
Joanna Newsom-Have One On Me.
Do scores count?
They do? Great!
The Knife in collaboration w/ Mt. Sims & Planningtorock: Tomorrow, In a Year
Xiu Xiu: Dear God, I Hate Myself
Frightened Rabbit - The Winter of Mixed Drinks
Balmorhea - Constellations
I should have seriously listened to more new albums this year
already
This thread is about to be over. Looks like everything is listed.
because the year ends in february?
erland and the carnival- erland and the carnival
I really like this album
my favourite of the year so far
Apparently I'm the only one though

dead mellotron s/t
downloadable for free here: http://www.myspace.com/deeeadmellotron
Godzilla Black s/t
Basia Bulat - Heart of My Own
Chicago Underground Duo - Boca Negra
if anyone's interested, this a really great, muscular, virtuosic jazz album
It's on Thrill Jockey, it's got a Ornette Coleman piece on it, and here's the BBC review with soundclips and shiz: http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/bzfd
Ive been wanting to get this.
Sounds pretty great after one sample listen.
It's a pretty great album all things considered.
Spy on the Floor's my favourite track, but they both really know what they're doing and lay down some really nice grooves.
Roll The Dice - S/T
this has just come out on cd, if anyone's interesting.
really nice ambient, synthy modulations from two Fever Ray collaborators
http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=295189
y'all be sleeping on some great shit.
grown on me more and more throughout the year.
Trouble Books - Gathered Tones
The LP's hopefully waiting for me at work, I've been streaming the heck out of it from here, though: http://ownrecords.bandcamp.com/album/trouble-books-gathered-tones
Ali Farka Touré & Toumani Diabaté - Ali and Toumani
Oh No Ono - Eggs
Some great tracks on there -- Internet Warriors!
A definite grower.
White Hills - S/T
This thread should have come with descriptions!
Just a short sentence or two on what the album sounds like..
Yeah, after the first ten or so posts
I realised that this wasn't actually going to help me find something I might think was worth listening to... thread fail.
No, not at all
I think that thread is great. I realise how many new album I have not listened to yet. I will be checking one or two more from that list.
its useful
to saddos like me who can guess the genre by who has posted it.
probably best if people wrote a quick sentence for relatively unknown stuff. even putting what genre it is would be helpful
Spoon - Transference
Manchester Orchestra- Mean Everything to Nothing
Probably their finest album yet! Highly listenable over and over and over....
very definitely last year
Charlotte Gainsbourg - IRM
The best thing Beck has been involved in since Mutations.
Very very pleased to see this get a shout. Not just one of the best albums of the year, but one of the best of the last five or more. Difficult to imagine how anyone wouldn't like it.
Unusually (considering they normally come across as an afterthought), the bonus tracks is one of my favourites.
Jesca Hoop - Hunting My Dress
Last year???
Fine album tho
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Beat The Devil's Tattoo
Seriously.
leaked?!
excuse me for a second....
Various - Pro Creation Rockers
'a compilation of bands that played on
Foot Village's 2009 'Anti-Magic / Pro-Creation' EU tour'
download HERE http://deathbombarc.com/releases/dba107.htm
Errr
This sounds amazing.
Local Natives - Gorilla Manor
Got this today and holy shit is it fantastic.
depends which side of the atlantic you were on
tindersticks - falling down a mountain
86 posts and I'm the first to mention this? It may not be the finest tindersticks album but c'mon it's a tindersticks album.
Eddy Current Suppression Ring - Rush To Relax
http://www.melodic.co.uk/index.htm?/melo066.htm
Shlohmo* though surely?
it's pretty good. not my favourite beats release of the year so far though.
I'll give it another listen.
There's a lot of this stuff out there, mostly on Eps though.
Mike Slott's Lucky 9teen is a favourite of mine.
Ras G's Destination There Ep or Brother from Anotha Planet Lp
Dorian Concept's When Planets Explode Lp, The Gaslamp Killer's My Troubled Mind Ep and obviously Flying Lotus' L.A., 1983 and Reset Ep are all pretty essential.
and from this year, Om Unit's Lightgrids, Illum Sphere's Long Live the Plan and Slugabed's Ultra Heat Treated Eps are great
It's a bit old but this thread might throw up some good things: http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4187973
Midlake - The Courage of Others
Massive Attack
Heligoland - released in February
my fav one Girl I Love You, music is really good :)
Album with lyrics at http://www.boomlyrics.com/songs/massive_attack/lyrics/girl_i_love_you.html
Having listened to the album now
I can't believe they went with "Splitting the Atom" as the lead single. Along with the opener, it's one of the weakest tracks on the album.
Remixes are fucking great too!
Same here
Why not any of the Topley-Bird tracks?
At least 4 tracks on here made me replay and save for playlisting. production value is high, as we'd expect..
haven't see/heard any remixes! will look.
Laura Veirs - July Flame
Jackie O Mother fucker - ballads of the revolution
The XX
Hi!I know the XX album 'xx' was released mid August 2009 but just want to put it out there for anyone who hasnt heard it yet,it is a must!haunting and addictive you will not be disappointed,i promise!you need this album in your life if not already!
Fail
On so many levels
HAha
Surely they don't need this...
You dont like the XX then?!!
lol
I like the XX but I bet you don't
you're either the world's most naive disser or you're a XX hater's alt-username with a mission to make us hate them for being a bunch of street-teaming jag-monsters.
Nedry - Condors
Artemis - Auralei
Yah, I produced it, but I'm not in the biz of working on music that sucks. Dreamy alternative trip-hop/electro-pop. Dirty and pretty.
JJ-JJ No.3
Liars-Sisterworld
Nana Grizol - Ruth
Emma Pollock - The Law of Large Numbers
Great return to form from ex-Delgado front woman. Very barren and complex at times, blissfully sweet and simple at others.
i was just about to check this out
someone recommended Emma Pollock, M.Ward, and Beach House in the same sentence.
Loscil - Endless Falls
Archie Bronson Outfit - Coconut
this ed
and my two word review: distorted clarity
Tunng - ...And Then We Saw Land
I've only had one listen of this on Spotify
but it sounded absolutely lovely. I have their first two albums, which were okay, but this sounds like the album I was hoping for them. For some reason it is crazily cheap online- I bought it for £5.48 from amazon, and it seems to be £6 in other places. Very strange for a new release!
Strange indeed
and also a bit annoying as I paid 8 quid for it, but I pre-ordered it and it came two days before the release date so I can't really complain. If you haven't heard Good Arrows you should really have a listen, it's amazing, better than the first two IMO, this new one is also ace, Tunng are wonderful.
oops I didn't mean to 'This' that!
I meant to click reply! Thanks for the heads up, I've just got it for 5.99 on Play!
Tunng only came onto my radar
beacause of the song they did with (the wonderful) Soy Un Caballo. This is my first try of their music and I must say that I like. 'Hustle' is a great song.
Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
duh!
High On Fire - Snakes For The Divine
The Ruby Suns - Fight Softly
The Pressure Room - Wide Of The Mark
www.thepressureroom.com

1.3 days worth of music!
Anyone has an extra day for me?
any chance Trouble Books' Gathered Tones could be added to the list?
as its now on spotify and it got some love further up. thanks.
Shearwater - The Golden Archipelago
surprised this wasn't on here already
RxRy - RxRy
I just love this: Belong meets Apparat meets Postal Service
http://www.myspace.com/rxry
The Snwmltr ep is excellent too
especially the first track Crstl Mlts
http://stadiums-and-shrines.blogspot.com/2010/02/snwmltr.html

eluvium - similes
this might be be eluviums best album ... wasnt sure when i read that vocals were gonna be on it but, its bliss, i am lovin it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8UyMsDvy-0
craigx
Son Lux - WEAPONS EP
okay so only an EP but 6 remixes/versions of my favourite song from my favourite album of 2008 - Nico Muhly Remix and Weapons V are the 2 highlights. Haunting melodic voice over electronic beats and breaks wih classic orchestral stylings
Filthy Turd
"An Occult History of the Midlands"
VARIOUS / FINDERS KEEPERS - Pomegranates
Persian Pop, Funk and Psych of the 60's and 70's
http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=259231
"...some of the most obscure, eye-popping electronic pop/funk/psyche recordings made in Iran in the 1960's and 70's before the revolution and the overthrow of the Shah. Finders Keepers once again manage to educate and amaze with a prime selection of mindblowing obscurities - the production on so many of the tracks here just beggar belief. The music reflects Iran at a time when it was undergoing massive change, partly due to the influx of Petrodollars and the pervasive influence of modernity which created a tension between mystical Eastern traditions and the freedom of socioeconomic development. These pieces are borne of multiple traditions indigenous and exogenous, sonically paralleling the psyche phenomena of USA and Britain, while retaining its own distinct Persian personality in songs rich in sonic innovation as well as wilful and ecstatic vibes."
I saw this the other day when I was out shopping and didn't get it in the end
I regret that now, but at the time all I had to go on was the title...
Moon Duo - Escape
The dude from Wooden Shjips but better than Wooden Shjips
Bullets In Madison - We Became Your Family When You Died
Blood Red Shoes - Fire Like This
The Strange Boys - Be Brave
I so love this band. Lo-Fi, Garage Rock
Josiah Wolf - Jet Lag
Why? member makes a slightly more traditional and acoustic singer songwriter album than why? but strong lots of vitality
the album leaf - chorus of storytellers
Clogs - Creatures in the garden of lady walton
national members with almost newsomesque operatic vocal on some songs and some more normal vocal on others
the go find - everybody knows it's gonna happen only not tonight
perhaps a little softer than i would of liked but still very solid
seabear - we built a fire
While Walking Slowly You Can See the Grasses Grow, the latest by DUSTdevil & Crow
http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Dustdevil__Crow/
They are working on a new one with aboombong
http://aboombong.bandcamp.com/
Lonelady - Nerve Up
Gonjasufi - A Sufi and a Killer
got this today
it's absolutely brilliant
about to check it
friend just told me about it...
nominating albums that aren't out yet is really cool
just shows how far ahead of the rest of us you are.
Don't doubt this will be one of the best of the year though. How could it not be?
Well having listened to the Spotify playlist.......
Fly Yellow Moon - Fyfe Dangerfield is in the top 5 albums of the year IMVHO
ok, added more to both Spotify playlists
Full albums: http://open.spotify.com/user/seaninsound/playlist/5SR8ufMhXDhCOl9RtHouIb
Sampler (1 track from each available record) http://open.spotify.com/user/seaninsound/playlist/1IvfgfHRBb6aIA62yiK0aJ
added trouble books and some other bits 'n bobs
Jack Rose- Luck In The Valley
The great guitarist's final album showcases how talented and what a range of styles Jack Rose had mastered when he tragically died. If you're a fan this is a must and for all others who enjoy music by John Fahey, Leo Kottke, Sir Richard Bishop, Robbie Basho, Steffen Basho-Junghans etc, this is a great addition to the Takoma, raga, pastoral, americana solo guitar lineage.
So far the best I've heard are
a) Slaraffenland's album "We're On Your Side"
b) Oh No Ono - "Eggs" (so good)
c) Yeti Lane's album - I think it's self titled.
Is Slaraffenland
being released in the UK this year? I got it last year, and definitely second its greatness!
Jaga Jazzist - One-Armed Bandit
not quite as good as the other 9-track Norwegian jazz-prog behemoth in this thread (safely this'd) but still a darn good effort
The Kissaway Trail- Sleep Mountain
other than seeing them live once last year, I hadn't ever paid attention to these guys before, but this album sounds great/one that I think I'm going to love the more I listen to it.
Titus Andronicus - The Monitor
Only just noticed that this wasn't in here. It should be.
Mixtapes - Maps
This indie pop punk record came from nowhere, but it's anthemic and awesome and makes me wish it was Summer already.
One Life Stand - Hot Chip
.

absolutely huge.
Phantogram - Eyelid Movies
Caribou - Swim
This is an incredible album.
yes
this is brilliant. favourite record of the year for me so far.
It took a while for me to see what the fuss was about.
Seemed a bit too cold on first few listens but then you get that niggling feeling of wanting to put it on again, but you're not sure exactly why. Now I love how natural it feels. Really refreshing. It sounds like autumn.
Casiokids - Topp Stemning Paa Lokal Bar
http://www.nomusicmedia.com/2010/03/05/kids-sans-frontieres/

Marina & The Diamonds - The Family Jewels
Thought I would give this a try. I was right to.
Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can
I like these threads. They'd be better if...
One could have an option to sort comments by most "this".
I've put These New Puritans and Pantha Du Prince on my to-download list. Thanks all!
It's not how many 'this'
It's WHO 'thisses', darling ;)
Burzum - Belus
The Sleepyheads - Malnutrition Of Love

Bonnie Prince Billy & The Cairo Gang - The Wonder Show of the World
Talk About- Mishka

Lux
Just discovered this band and getting into them in a major way...
Delorean - Subiza
having a listen to their myspace
there's a new track that sounds like a cross between cheesy trance and an animal collective rip off. it seems catchy but kind of throwaway.
like Siriusmo, but even more cheesy.
what lemur said.
barely out of an 80s teen movie.
but the Delorean remix of Glasser - "Glad" isn't bad.
maybe 3 years from now...
Starkey - Ear Drums and Black Holes [Planet Mu]
still gotta check this
.
Meska – School Of Mesak [Harmönia]

Infinite Arms by Band of Horses
So fucking stoked for this I'm nominating it after hearing barely a quarter of it on pre-release streams and live telly appearances. Compliments rocks, Laredo chugs, Factory swings and swirls on a hallucinatory string part and Evening Kitchen fingerpicks towards heaven in a rusty pickup thru sultry evening light on a lonely blacktop through the stubbled haze of barren cornfields.
Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (II)
Crystal Castles - Celestica EP
The National - High Violet
Well I guess like a lot of you, I have taken a stab at reviewing the new album from a fan's eyed perspective http://www.therockclubuk.com/rc/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=453
Free the Robots - CTRL ALT DELETE
everything on this list makes me think of straw fields and dreamy-rainbow glare-filled vignettes right out of a silent Calvin Klein commercial, as a soundtrack for a tween coming of age Focus Feature. and i don't even know a lot of these names, I'm just guessing based on how many white people are on here.
so this post is for headnodic beats.
With this release (and I admit that i hadn't listened to previous FTR), FTR cements itself among the up-and-coming in instrumental breakbeat/hip hop influenced/UK bleep accented hypnotics. If you like Nosaj Thing, Prefuse73, Hudson Mohawke, or even late JDilla, then you'd be interested in this.
However, with all praise deserved, this is NOT the strongest of the year, shows room for improvement in terms of diversity on an LP, and leaves me desiring much more.
That being said, "Mental Universe" IS one of the strongest tracks of the year, and possibly two years, for me.
Groove Armada - Black Light
Now THIS is one of the strongest albums of the year, for me.
Far from their house music roots, Groove Armada lay down one of the most impressive musical surprises since last year's Dangermouse & Sparklehorse project.
So many influences are tied into a big sound; I really do mean that they attempt the transcendental, with strong songwriting, vocals, and musical structure, all around an electronic backdrop. This music is for communal uproar on a stage.
well. I think so anyway. Surprised me thoroughly.
some really great tracks - Just for Tonight, Time & Space, History
but the rest i can't really get into. Loving the addition of Will Young though
I bought it on a complete whim mind
the only Groove track i'd ever heard was Superstylin'
really?
I like the album opener, Warsaw, and Paper Romance.
yeah i thought it was good too
Was also a little surprised at how good it was, especially with the 80s synthpop elements. I don't think I was quite as enamoured as you, but I liked it nonetheless
James Pants - Seven Seals
Honestly. Quite a surprise, considering I knew him for 'Cosmic Rapp.' 'Thin Moon' is excellent. And the whole Garage influence is really something. Very Dangermouse-like work in this regard.
last year isn't it?
I still need to grab it mind cheers for the reminder.
yea last year..
but still worth getting!
Egyptian Lover remix of Cosmic Rapp is fresh too. throwback fresh.
Routine Jazz: Ricky Tick - Selected By Kei Kobayashi
If you like club jazz, big band, esp in the new revival of the last few years (like Soil & Pimp Sessions, Five Corners Quintet) then you'll REALLY like this one.
Classic and contemporary work off the Scandinavian Ricky Tick label, curated by established Japanese producer/DJ Kei Kobayashi (Shibuya) as part of the Routine imprint.

damn, 2009
sorry. i didn't find it until late 09.
Medications - Completely Removed
Ex-members of Faraquet. Dischordtastic.
new young pony club — the optimist

MOON DUO - ESCAPE
Sun Araw - On Patrol
Need that!
I'm waiting on the cd though, I'm not payin 20 odd quid for the vinyl like I've seen some places. I really love Heavy Deeds.
Alcest - Ecailles De Lune
Yes, it's French. Yes, it's great!
Damn! Already been done. I replace this with...
DOM - SUN BRONZED GREEK GODS EP
Koss - Ancient Rain
Props to whacksdiddy for this one.
Beautiful deep house/ambient/dub techno album from Terre Thaemlitz's Mule Electronic label.
xlr8r gave this track away
http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2010/03/ocean-waves
and he did a really beautiful mix for mnmlssgs:
http://mnmlssg.blogspot.com/2009/06/mnml-ssgs-mx27-koss.html
Peter Van Hoesen - Entropic City
Deep, atmospheric techno album. Really ace young producer picking up a lot of hype, and this album works really well for me as full-length.
Bandcamp here: http://petervanhoesen.bandcamp.com/album/entropic-city
Thomas Fehlmann - Gute Luft
I really like Thomas Fehlmann a lot, and this techno/ambient soundtrack to a documentary about 24hr in Berlin is really gorgeous and pretty accessible. The guy knows how to make quite complex music that is also completely immediate. Deserves to be much more known.
i agree!
I found some old stuff of his from 2004 and liked it a lot, he was right on the edge even then, with Dabrye and Ghostly International. thanks for letting me know.
great. as it happens, it was just going to post this stream anyway
if nothing else Kompakt have a really cool website

65daysofstatic - We Were Exploding Anyway
Really enjoying this album right now, especially the track 'Come to Me'. There's a lot to take in, I could be listening to it the whole year methinks!
Very good album
Come to Me (featuring Robert Smith of the Cure, if anyone reading this doesn't already know) is indeed a standout
65dos song: PX3
be sure to check the song PX3 from their latest EP, really worth it.
Nice Nice — Extra Wow
The Black Dog - Music for Airports
Techno concept album about the duality between possibility and coldness in airports but a lot better than that sounds.
Music for Real Airports*
idiot. Music for Airports is obviously the Brian Eno lp it's referencing. Anyway, stream here: http://www.musicforrealairports.com/live/album.php
Oh good. Glad you liked it.
Out on digital now. Physical release on May 10th, I believe.
Here's a FACT mix as well mainly made up of their own stuff, for grouchland or anyone else:
http://www.factmag.com/2010/04/26/fact-mix-144-the-black-dog/
FREE ENERGY - Stuck On Nothing
Yeah, get in! Awesome album! Bang Pop...
FRONTIER RUCKUS' Dead Malls and Nightfalls is going to be great too, and the last with the amazing Anna Burch (breaks my heart), but they should've included Mona & Emmy...
x
2010 is owned by
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti's 'Before Today'
I know this man...
Dunno if anyone wrote that above already, but I'm not going to sift through your shitty list
You could just search for it by hitting 'control F'
And how do you know the list is shitty if you didn't look through it?
good to know
Control F! Only facebook geeks know that sort of shit, or am I completely ignorant with keyboard functions?
btw, this list is inevitably shitty...and you inevitably have shitty taste
any good English bands anymore?
What does cntrl f have to do with Facebook?
I believe you might be retarded.
He's maybe a bit confused as it has an F involved
He's a trolling uber-mong anyway.
^_^
"or am I completely ignorant with keyboard functions?"
Cntrl Alt Shift - Y E P
I'm making a proper one for this album
down the bottom. Since noone has thisd it and it should have at least 20 on it by now.

Jailbreak - The Rocker
Roaring, clattering free rock/noise jams by Heather Leigh and Chris Corsano
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1M4ss4yIVA
Part Wild Horses Mane on Both Sides - All Cows are Sacred
Starting off sparse and then building to a deliciously textured, howling crescendo. Totally hypnotic and primal as always
massively exciting to be seeing them twice in the next month.
first at Be Prepared's Ben Frost gig: http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4251945
then at this amazing little event at Bristol's Cube: http://www.singingknivesrecords.co.uk/Singing-Knives-Records-at-The-Cube-B-12-06-10-LR.jpg
yes I'm incredibly excited about seeing them at the Ben Frost gig
I think I might go to the one in Manchester too. That event in Bristol sounds great too, if only...
Also there's this at on the 28th of May: http://www.cafeoto.co.uk/RQE.shtm with Pascal and Kelly playing separately with different groups
Food - Quiet Inlet [ECM]
The duo of Ian Bellamy (saxophone) and Thomas Stronen (genius on the percussion and electronics) collaborate with Fennesz and some other people for the first release on ECM. Mix of the traditional (often in Bellamy) and the pretty far-out (in Stronen and Fennesz) but just really gorgeous and coherent as a full-length.
Here's the BBC review with soundclips.
(Here's the BBC review with soundclips:)

hmm, couldn't find this on boomkat.

Booka Shade - More!
Clubroot – II - MMX [Lo Dubs]
Damien Jurado - Saint Bartlett
if i were to ever make a really big list of really pretty songs that i enjoy waking up to in the morning this would rank darn high
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1t6m0WruMQ
sage francis - li(f)e
hip hop poets new album produced by modest mouse and califone members and featuring members of death cab.., sparklehorse, calexico and grandaddy. He gets away perfectly with lines like 'i was zero when i came out my muma'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ji0_1lhtH0
the future islands - In Evening Air
A more calm and measured affair than their debut but still great and i can't tire of his gruff tones, particulalry with stand out tracks like
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GhtZt2HYkM
and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTmdejZe8m0

Paddy Nash and the Happy Enchiladas - 'when we were brave'
released last month and getting great reviews. US tour in September called 'bringing it all back out.
out on itunes and other music places to buy! check them oooout! :)
Noisia - Split the Atom
augh! on repeat since I found it. seriously destroys any other beats album out there. just.. a really mature electronic album in the tradition of pure jungle drum & bass, but going way beyond it.
enveloping sound, a very steady surprise with every track. Thursday, Alpha Centauri, Dystopia, Diplodocus, Sunhammer ft Amon Tobin..
though the opener has an annoying electro bit just as a leadup. hah.
Phosphorescent - Here's To Taking Easy
Superb album, which, unfortunately, will get ignored.
coz it's fucking awful
Actually, yes...
it's not that good. But far from awful.
it's okay...
but it's certainly not pride, i don't think there's anything to the standard of 'wolves' or 'death a proclamation', and it's gone a little too country for my tastes, which is a shame.
William Fitzsimmons - Derivatives
For fans of Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine, Elliot Smith, Horse Feathers etc - moving on from his last album Sparrow and the Hawk, Derivatives, as the name suggest is something of a remixed album, it adds electronic elements to most of its songs , heading in to chilled Postal Service territory and theres even a nice acoustic cover of Katey Perrys 'I kissed a girl'
Foals - Total Life Forever
this year is actually turning out to be great!
male bonding - Nothing Hurts
The Juan McLean - DJ-Kicks
Here's a link to the Pitchfork review to convince you (if you get convinced by that kind of thing):
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14165-dj-kicks/
Is that an album?
Josh Ritter - So Runs the World Away
Willie Nelson - Country Music
Gamine - You can cry (and other lullabies)
I would be surprised if any music lovelier will cross my path this year.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ue21YPN0-cE
The Delta Mirror - Machines that listen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0av_QDIkUE
glitchy, pretty, foggy vocaled landscapes
This is a warm bundle of niceness
Can somebody please tell me the top 10 this'd albums and let me know?
Thanks.
Jamie Lidell - Compass
LCD Soundsystem - This is Happening
haha
heard this album...unfortunately
sucks ass for those who aren't one-dimensional in thought
You're on a roll there fella.
What a coherent statement.
You're clearly a sharp one.
This is sarcasm by the way.
Eleven Tigers - Clouds are Mountains [Soul Motive]
this will give you some clues...
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4256787
I knew this producer was good but the album really took me by suprise with its brilliance. Melodic, deep, organic and fun garage infused dubstep music. Lots of live instruments and atmospheric business as well as large basslines.
love this album
not officially out on download until the 31st, but their bandcamp page let me buy it anyway :D
http://soulmotive.bandcamp.com/album/clouds-are-mountains?auto=mp3-320

Akira Rabelais - Caduceus [Samadhisound]
well, it's Akira Rabelais and it doesn't disapoint so...
stream here: http://www.samadhisound.com/akirarabelais/
Guilty Simpson - OJ Simpson
Some hard raps over Madlib's production, Guilty sounds like he loosened up a little, seems more comfortable. Plays out like the Madvillian album in that its loaded with vocal snips, interludes, comedy, and randomness. Granted this is not as good as Madvillain, and not nearly as weeded out, but its most def in the top 3 hip-hop releases this year, so far.
Back On The Road Again
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDlqy2cpwqk
Probably wont be up on there for long.
Sightings - City of Straw
The Dead Weather - Sea of Cowards
Better than the first one.
She & Him - Volume Two
The New Pornographers - Together
Underrated
Born Ruffians - Say it
Guido – Anidea [Punch Drunk]
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4253917
Actress - Splazsh [Honest Jon’s]
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4257086
James Blake-CMYK.
if we were to start on eps we'd be here all day.
So?
i didn't mean it entirely literally - i don't really care
but there are about 3 eps I would reccomend from just this last week, and since the majority of people aren't that bothered, it seems unfair to foist them all in here
+ an lp is completely different from an ep in terms of how they're structed, how they're listened to, how they're bought, how they're quantified at the end of the year - they aim to do completely different things.
+ the thread is called 'Recommend Albums of 2010 (Thus Far)'
but as I say, I don't really care and was 90% joking with a 10% of anally wanted to be tidy, and officious.
Ah, who cares what's fair.
Just force 'em on us whether we like it or not. If people need to hear it people need to hear it. The Zola Jesus EP is on here...
I take all this back - I was in a bit of a grumpy mood.
Recommend your granny and a sandwich if you so wish.
That shit's terrible.
So, the thread is 'recommended albums'
Fuck you.
Mwah! X x
Also, you recommended She And Him.
Which isn't an album. It's a massive pile of horseshit. So there.
haha :D
Emeralds - Does It Look Like I'm Here?
Delorean - Subiza
The Depreciation Guild - Spirit Youth
girls in the eighties — Teenage Royalty
kinda nu-gaze. I'd describe it as The Radio Dept. meets The Big Pink at times The Radio Dept. meets Deerhunter at other times (they do a cover of Strange Lights), but not only would that be inadequate and unjust, the first description at least would probably put a whole lot of people off it.
Can't figure out if this is actually '09. Seen it described as an '09 release, but the earliest menion of it I can find is in Jan '10. Plus the band themselves don't blog about it as being released until March '10. So, I'm a-gonna make an executive decision and call it an oh-ten release.
And it's quality, in any case.
Villagers - Becoming A Jackal
Listening to this right now. Simply superb!
These Monsters - Call Me Dragon
Noblesse - We Are Not Humanity
brilliant 2nd album from this Netherlands trio. produced by the guy who produced The Strokes, but quite different. June 10th they're playing at The Cross Kings in London. check it here:

review: http://innerearmedia.wordpress.com/2010/03/19/review-noblesse-we-are-not-humanity/
Red Sparowes - The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein Lies The Answer
Holy Fuck - Latin
Steve Mason - Boys Outside
Cant believe this is all the way down here
This is such a good album.
Connan Mockasin - Please Turn Me Into The Snat
Tame Impala - Innerspeaker

I believe this came out last year.
Good shout though, I can't wait for the album (out 25th Oct!).
Rolo Tomassi-Cosmology
Frog Eyes - Paul's Tomb: A Triumph
Bought on a whim based on the CMG review. It's fucking awesome. First track is one of the best epic guitar songs (ie: Modest Mouse back in the day) I've heard for a long time.
Active Child EP - Curtis Lane
I can't wait for the album!
The above wasn't supposed to be here...
as a reply to Frog Eyes recommendation. Though, I quiet like that album too. The first song is epic, indeed.
Deftones - Diamond Eyes
Awesome interview with them in this magazine.

Harvey Milk - A Small Turn Of Human Kindness
obviously the best thing ever.
Caribou - Swim
Already been done
Twice in fact.
Good album though
For my first post i reccomend...
Baths - Baths
Dope album, reminds me of the new FlyLo albumm, word....
Lone Wolf - The Devil And I
This got a great review on DiS so i checked it out. Absolutely awesome!
Surprised more people aren't talking about it to be fair.
Awesome vid to 'Keep Your Eyes On The Road' too
http://vimeo.com/10001188
Chrome Hoof - Crush Depth
Oval - Oh
admittedly a 15 track EP, but pretty great nonetheless.
this^ with some reservations
really beautiful but a bit too Four Tet-y in places, I'm hoping the full-length will be a bit more lateral.
Rangda - False Flag
have deep love of.
LaFaro - s/t
Think Mclusky, Nirvana, Jesus Lizard...
Trans Am - Thing
Standard Fare - The Noyelle Beat
Just a fun, fun album from start to finish it has (i think) revived my love of Indie, brilliant. It was either this or Worriedaboutsatan 'Heart Monitor EP' which was just beautiful.
Laurie Anderson-Homeland
Incl. guest spots from K.Hebden, A.Hegarty, J.Zorn and L.Reed and will BLOW YOUR MIND.
The Black Keys - Brothers
Consistent band they are. Better than Attack and Release and a fine all around solid rock album. Paced well and has some nice grooves to accompany the grit.
The Roots-How I Got Over.
You know you love 'em. Continues their more hard-hitting recent sound with excellent results.
Beat me too it.
uh, *to
Drink the Sea - The Glith Mob

Why has no-one mentioned Lone Wolf - The Devil & I?
IT's hella amazing. Probably my album of the year so far.
http://www.myspace.com/thisislonewolf
i have to recommend the vigo thieves as I would really like to see these guys make it as a house hold band. if you havent heard of them their a scottish band from wishaw on the outskirts of glasgow. not much more i can say than i like their songs and i think their website is vigothieves.com. some of their videos are well funny - have a wee look and enjoy ;)
'Postcount -1'
Oh the crushing sound of inevitability
hahahaha
I remember when Jaggers at least used to TRY...
Meursault - All Creatures Will Make Merry
On first listen, hands down album of the year. Huge, original, epic, wounded and real. Seriously seriously check this out.....
Julian Lynch-Mare.
Was listening to it outside yesterday and a birds mating call meshed perfectly with Travelers (it went like WHOOP. WHOOP. WHOO-COOCOOCOOCOOCOOCOOCOOCOOCOO.) What that means for your weekend when we come back.
Gucci Mane-Mr. Zone 6.
IT'S GUCCI! That's all you need to know, the shit's free, just listen to it.
The-Dream-Love King.
Its got a song called 'Panties To The Side,' which means that you need it.
Rene Hell - Porcelain Opera
Six dreamy synth pieces. Wonderful record for closing your eyes and freeing your mind.
Ben Klock - Berghain 04
New mix for the Berghain club, and it's bloody great. No frills, just killer songs.
Big Boi-Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty.
>everything.
The Books - The Way Out
OK, so it's not out yet, but I have heard it. More obviously strange than previous albums, and quite humorous.
I'd like to note that this album puts a stupid-ass grin on my face just as a Books album should.
Nina Nastasia - Outlaster
Cloud Control - Bliss Release
http://www.myspace.com/cloudcontrol
I think this has only been released here in Australia so far and is due in the UK early next year. They will be playing a few UK live dates later this month though. Worth checking out.
Everything Everything - Man Alive
Crime in Stereo - i was trying to describe you to someone
like brand new but with more hardcore influences.
doesnt belong there though
Ian M Hale - Successor
http://www.we7.com/album/Ian-M-Hale/Successor?m=0
Kvelertak - s/t
Norwegian punk/metal/hardcore with a real melodic edge. At times it sounds a bit like a screamier, more serious Turbonegro!
Saw them support Converge recently
Fantastic brutal noise assault. Completely agree about this album.
The slight below- It all falls apart
beautiful ambient techno, check out this cover of Joy Division if you need to be persuaded
http://open.spotify.com/track/2clR2PQRjSHOVF0Gw1w4vU
This is excellent.
It's actually The Sight Below, for anyone searching on emusic or anything.

The Bridgeheads - Foreigners.
myspace.com/thebridgeheads
i'd like to recomment the same - The Bridgeheads - Foreigners
since it is available for free from the band's website, anyone can check it really. Here's my 2 favourite songs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpzKljqIHW0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO-_cDjo7OI
Why?
Radio People - Radio People
Emeralds-esque beauty
The Love Language - Libraries
Fuzzed up, orchestral oldies rock. Totally delivers on the promise of last year's debut.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Obfwy6H-MOc&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6J4Kup4v3w&feature=related
Perfume Genius - Learning
Surprised it hasn't been mentioned already. One of my favourites this year for sure, haunting, beautiful and cathartic. Hope this guy goes on to make many more records.
Talvihorros - Music in Four Movements
Amazing four track album of post-classical type ambient. Fans of such stuff should really check this out.
http://talvihorros.bandcamp.com/album/music-in-four-movements
Pretty cool Chris, pretty cool.
Depressing little blurb there at the end.
Olafur Arnalds - ...And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness
Fantastic, possibly even better than Eulogy for Evolution.
Little Women-Throat.
Better late than never. If you're looking for the most violent sax skronk imaginable, this is where you'll find it. Punishing yet totally joyful.
Arcade Fire: THE SUBURBS
hell yeah motherfucker
Avi Buffalo - Avi Buffalo
Doesn't appear to be here. It should be. It's damn good.
Whats In It For?
I think I will always love this song...
Autolux — Transit Transit
although I may be alone on this one. Most seem to rate it as either disappointing, or merely not too bad.
Not quite alone
Transit Transit's one of my albums of the year - definitely. One line from the title track, "eyes like fire, lips like rainclouds", sums the whole bittersweet affair up beautifully.
I really like it.
I think it encapsulates 21st century life pretty well. And the chorus to 'Supertoys' is sweeeet.
Jim Kerr AKA Lost Boy
Jim Kerr's new solo work is some of his best stuff since classic Simple Minds, I'm really digging it at the moment.
See what you think to the latest single 'She Fell In Love With Silence': http://www.live4ever.uk.com/2010/07/stream-jim-kerr-she-fell-in-love-with-silence/ - pretty mint huh? x

Castevet - Mounds of Ash
Another essential Profound Lore release - blac kmetal overloaded with dirty hardcore. Bit like Krallice in tone and expansive drive (it's produced by Colin Marston), but shorter more dynamic songs.
http://www.myspace.com/castevet
Ice Dragon - The Burl, The Earth, The Aether
Self released free download album covering a few different styles of metal and leaning into classic rock. Some heavy stoned Sabbath worshipping going on here, amongst many other things.
get it here and see for yourself:
www.icedragon.bandcamp.com/album/the-burl-the-earth-the-aether
Imperium Dekadenz - Procella Vadens
a pretty expansive take on post-bm, with burst beats, hyperspeed groove riffs, orchestrated hymnal melodies and acoustic passages.
www.myspace.com/imperiumdekadenz
Broadcast 2000 - s/t
Nice folky album with alot of good instrumentation on it.
Loved it after a friend gave me a mix with "I Hold My Breath" on it.
Beat Coast - Crazy for you
possible album of year for me.
i wanna ^this this as a recommendation
but it's not possibly the best album of the year for me.
worst album of the year....
so boring and unoriginal.
typo.
Ahem.. BEST COAST - CRAZY FOR YOU
Thats better.
Candy Claws - Hidden Lands
Barely listening to anything else at the moment.
Cherry Ghost - Beneath This Burning Shoreline
It's like a grimier Elbow record, with coal-stained Richard Hawley watching.
Otouto - Pip
really nice female fronted eclectic indie pop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yLJgS1YMGs&feature=related
really nice label 'two bright lakes' putting out lots of great stuff this year.
Hello Satellites - Hello Satellites
another Australian band from 'two bright lakes'
somewhere inbetween wildbirds and peacedrums and people press play

*best we give Suburbs some kind of proportional allowance, non?
Sun Kil Moon - Admiral Fell Promises
The new LA ROUX record?!
Toooo good! La Roux just featured Japan's 'I Second That Emotion' on her Sidetracked compilation, released today.
It features a bunch of tracks that have inspired her. Check out a sampler here: http://bit.ly/ahbvYo
Women - Public Strain
MCDE
Motor city drum ensemble, raw cuts vol 1 is a clinker, hope i'm not wrong in saying it is an album, if it's just a collection of EPs apologies, pretty sure it's an album, and a ruddy good one at that! Love prayer!
Stornoway - Beachcomber's Windowsill
Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned. Brilliant songs especially Zorbing.
Pulled Apart by Horses- Pulled Apart By Horses
Never has a party album, sounded so insane, so load, so fresh (even though they did reuse a lot of singles) and so god darn fun.
Cant wait for Blut Fuasts Debut coming out this year ;-)
^ This definitely
Doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't, just balls out good fun
Defiance, Ohio - Midwestern Minutes
if you're into No Idea/Orgcore/folk-punk or americana
http://www.noidearecords.com/bands/releases/defianceohio_midwesternminutes.php
Dirty Projectors and Bjork - Mount Wittenburg Orca
Just thought I'd thow this in, although I doubt that anyone on here is unaware of it.
This thread's been great - I'm going to have to start saving for the multiple CDs I now HAVE to own!
oh, and it's a download only release that you can buy here:
www.mountwittenbergorca.com/
and the whole album's on youtube so you can listen to it there
That sounded like a JAG
sorry, it wasn't
Hired Muscle - One Last Minute
I'm going to sound so much like a JAGer for going on about this but it's a great record if you like your rock a little bit mathy and a little bit rowdy.
Ninjasonik - Art School Girls
Tight-jeaned Hip Hop ahoy.
http://open.spotify.com/track/3fuT9Ed2ZLEj7vPv276MLL
klaxons - surfing the void

Warm Slime - Thee Oh Sees
It's aces
Worlds End Girlfriend - Seven Idiots
did not know about this. need to check it out.
hey retards
You're all predictable, ugly ass Brits. Your music is pure shit these days. What happened to the days of stealing from African-American blues? What you pump out now sounds like eating your own vomit instead of hasty theft. Suppose I can't decide which is worse.
No one in America cares about ANY British bands out NOW. Why? Because you're last in line. Untalented, marginal, boring. Your teeth are collectively fucked. You smell of piss and tea. I wish the ocean would cover you completely. The only thing you had going was the Beatles, but Brian Wilson always came out on top.
BTW, I relish negativity. It makes me feel good. So keep it cumming, fags.
Sorry pal, we don't know who you are.
Hmm.
Judging a whole nation based on one kids (whos probably just having a good time trolling) random rant on a music forum is suspect.
America can suck my dick
fuck you,u yank piece of shit, only someone from a country as obnoxious as the USA could honestly think cousin-fucking hillbilly Brian Wilson is a better songwriter than John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Even Ringo Starr beats the shit out of Wilson's songwriting abilities. This is pretty much the Beach Boys' reaction to Wilson whenever he wrote a new song; "What's that Brian you've come up with a new song? Well, yes that is surprising, a conventional pop structure with unnecessary harmonies and a complete disregard for melody. You've done it again Brian, and to think 50 years from now some unemployed, stoner, fuck-knuckle of retard will compare your tedious work to the inspirational work of the Beatles."
Besides, British music is just automatically better then American because our music is so crafted. Look at Radiohead, they release an album every 3 to 4 years and blow everything American out of the water. Then all u yanks lick your wounds and try to write something similar, failing epicly, and then you all agree that in actual fact it is better then Radiohead and go to bed and dry hump your guns or your flags or the 3rd world's asshole.
Have you listened to yourself, no good British bands? every heard of the Horrors, the XX, Wild Beasts, the Big Pink, Fuck Buttons, Bat for Lashes, Bloc Party, The Kills, Los Campesinos, Elbow, Late of the Pier, Foals, the Maccabees, Biffy Clyro (for a while atleast).
I mean let's face it ALL American bands owe a huge deal to British music and equally British music owes a lot to American music, the whole point is that influence is everywhere and about celebrating our similarities and differences so the whole debate is null and void anyway.
Peace out bitch, I hope I didn't distract you from funding right-wing guerrila militias or completely fucking up the world economy.
I like the new direction this thread is going in.
i think it's almost certainly the same person. arguing with themselves, right?
CRONIN!
Rose Elinor Dougall - Without Why
a surprisingly beautiful debut from the former pipettes vocalist. I can seriously see this sneaking onto some AOTY lists.
Terrible JAG
!
Bruce Haack - The Electric Voice [Stones Throw]
wonderful record. funky vocoder jams from late 60s/70s. real good ol' fashioned fun.
http://boomkat.com/cds/332862-bruce-haack-the-electric-voice
Miles Kurosky - The Desert of Shallow Effects
Deer Tick - The Black Dirt Sessions
The Trees - Can't See the Wood For

Cntrl F fail.
Luke Abbott - Holkham Drones
Amazing. Even better than black noise.

Adebisi Shank - This is the Second Album of a Band called Adebisi Shank
Such joyous fun. Something like Battles mixed with Andrew WK
^SUPER THIS
Forest Swords - Dagger Paths
Super Wild Horses - Thirteen
Orphan Boy Passion Pain & Loyalty
Anybody?
Menomena's Mines?
Pretty sure noone's said that yet, but they really should have. Brilliant stuff.
Yes, an excellent record
Though not quite as good as Friend & Foe IMO
Mines is great..
but F&F and IATFBM are both just a little bit better.
I love American music
it's dominated my music collection by probably 5 records to 1 over the last few years... a similar ratio to their population over ours perhaps, it makes sense.
but it's ignorant to say the U.K. doesn't produce any great music anymore and if no one in America cares about artists and bands such as
Laura Marling, Four Tet, The XX, Radiohead, Orphan Boy, Burial, Bat For Lashes then its their loss...
i personally don't believe that that's true, give them some credit most Americans aren't that stupid just negative people who thrive of reaction maybe they have something missing from their lives... grace, taste, humility and dignity for sure
Working For A Nuclear Free City - Jojo Burger Tempest
wha?
when did this happen?!
Blonde Redhead - Penny Sparkle
Instant Classic - the sexiest, most atmospheric, hard to decide whether it's more bathed in the past or the future, would be most ^ This'd in the list if it had come out in January, album I am honoured to add to the list.
The Tallest Man On Earth - The Wild Hunt
If Fionn Regan and Bright Eyes were the new Bob Dylan, can they get out of this guy's way and just let him sing and play guitar and bring the stars down from the sky?
=WEEZER= - Hurley
Matthew Dear - Black City
Parades - Foreign Tapes
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Let It Sway
Crippled Black Phoenix - I, Vigilante
A Forest of Stars - Opportunistic Thieves of Spring
White Medal - Agbrigg Beast
U.S. Christmas – Run Thick In The Night
The Steven Lasombras - A Diamond Eye Shines In Failing Light

film school - fission
fucking love this album
her name is calla - the quiet lamb
I was going to post this yesterday
but thought I'd better wait until I've actually heard it all! Denovali say it was dispatched on Tuesday so I'm hoping it'll turn up soon!
i hope so too .... the artwork / packaging of the basic cd
version is pretty sublime, but the box will be lush
as a HNIC fan
I reckon you should check out the Crippled Black Phoenix album I, Vigilante if you haven't already, it's fantastic!
Twin Shadow - Forget
Of Montreal - False Priest
The Sword - Warp Riders

every time I listen.
Black Milk - Album of the Year
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4267393
Tame Impala - Innerspeaker
Has been mentioned many times...
Great album, though!
Max Richter - Infra
Found it strangely moving. Recommended.
This is definitely one of the most
embracing works that has been or will be released this year
Church Of The Very Bright Lights - Gang Crimes
Music by James Cullen, backed by Chris Reimer and Matt Flegel of the band Women.
http://www.mediafire.com/?bq66lcqftmymmvz
http://www.myspace.com/churchoftheverybrightlights
Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky
How To Dress Well-Love Remains.
Electric Six - Zodiac
Nails-Unsilent Death
Fifteen brutal minutes of the dirtiest grind possible. Kurt Ballou behind the boards. You can't go wrong.
Grass Widow - Past Time
the Raincoats/Liliput comparisons are difficult to avoid but it's a great record and a real step up from their EPs. Great harmonies too
Onra - Long Distance
funky new jack swing-style beats and a guest spot from T3 of Slum Village, I like it a great deal
No Age - Everything In Between
Can't wait for next week, despite it being at Start the Bus.
UFOmammut - Eve
Spacey doom type metal.
Drake - Thank Me Later
A quick ctrl+f shows this hasn't been mentioned yet - didn't think it was gonna be a favourite when I first heard it but I keep coming back to it over and over again, seriously seriously good album.
Lorn - Nothing Else
My favourite Brainfeeder release of the year. Probably a controversial one that but there you go. Not as mental as Cosmogramma so it lends itself a lot more to repeat listens, it sounds a lot like a darker/heavier Drift.
Shit, already been said.
As you were.
VHS Head- Trademark Ribbons of Gold
Awesome frenetic cut and paste sample-heavy electronica. (Literally) Bounces somewhere between Art of Noise and Jackson and His Computer Band.
Sufjan Stevens - The Age Of Adz
poor trolling
?
? bump
Amiina - Puzzle..
...gorgeous stuff.
Andrew Cedermark: Moon Deluxe
les savy fav - root for ruin
Tamaryn - The Waves
Clearly listened to A Storm in Heaven a few times, but that's ok, so have I
Caitlin Rose - Own Side Now
Shocked that noone has mentioned this yet
Magic Kids - Memphis
incredible
It took a few listens for my fears about it being too retro to be calmed, but once it all clicked into place, yes, yes it is.
just out of interest, whats your favourite track??
Sailin' has gotta be mine
Sailin' is my favourite too. The lyric about sailing around the isle of man always makes me smile. Wonder if he has ever be there.
fops - yeth yeth yeth
thee more shallows frontman, ral partha... lyricist - electronic indie pop
http://vimeo.com/15493822
maximum balloon - maximum balloon
Phantom Band - The Wants
How can this be so lowly this'd?
:'(
Kno - Death is Silent.
HipHop's most underated producer.
Give this a try, you will be very suprised.
Apart from that....
John Mayer - Battle Studies
Roc Marciano - Marcberg
Teebs - Ardour
essential for FlyLo/Ras G fans
Sleep Forever - Crocodiles
Digging this record a lot. Definitely one of the best of the year.
I reviewed it here:
http://stuffandsuch.wordpress.com/2010/09/21/sleep-forever-crocodiles/
The Walkmen - Lisbon
lovely
Gold Panda - Lucky Shiner
Die Antwoord - $O$
my penis is clean
The Body - All The Waters Of The Earth Turn To Blood
Svarte Greiner - Penpals Forever (& Ever)
superb ambient drone electronics.
Won't be to everyone's tastes...
...but if you're a fan cheesy soul, John Legend and The Roots "Wake Up" is absolutely brilliant.
Won't be to everyone's tastes...
...but if you're a fan cheesy soul, John Legend and The Roots "Wake Up" is absolutely brilliant.
I wouldn't throw it in the brilliant realm.
But I like it.
Speaking of cheesy soul
I'd recommend "Aloe Blacc - Good Things", too.
Sennen - Age Of Denial
Delphic - Acolyte
Shugo Tokumaru - Port Entropy
Chatmonchy - Hyojo
Soundpool - Mirrors In Your Eyes
Avey Tare - Down There.
I have agreed with most your recommendations...
and you seem to have agreed on some of mine too. Hence, I've gotta check this out.
Manic Street Preachers - Postcards From a Young Man
In a year dominated by such laconic, DIY sounds, releasing a record like this seems as bold as you can get, and it works.
Land of Talk - Cloak and Cipher
Melancholic and groovy without totally sacrificing rock and roll. Maybe their best yet.
Thank christ
I was worrying that nobody had mentioned it...
Great album, every bit as good as Some Are Lakes.
Tokyo Police Club - Champ
Endlessly catchy indie pop rock. Great to see a young band that gets better each time out.
ScienZe - The Phone Tap(e)
Ridiculously underrated MC.
Alice - "8 bit ches" or "Plastercine Ice cream"
Anyone a fan of Aphex Twin, Flying Lotus or Warp Records in general should like this up coming release I think it's out around Novemember or December I think this track may be on it. Also the title is supposed to be one of the above.
http://www.youtube.com//watch?v=-59FoTsqJ-E
What?
What?
What?
What?
What?
Drive By Truckers - The Big To Do
So apparently this is underrated cos no ones mentioned it.
Warpaint - The Fool
so impressed, lovely, lovely stuff
Bilal - Airtights Revenge
Good modern soul.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0apYId-zQQE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN4qjouqgB4&feature=related
downloaded this last night after you mentioned it
one listen through but I really liked it.
(Check that Das Racist mixtape I just made a thread on. I've only listened to it 2 or 3 times through, but I've a feeling I'll include it on here soon.)
Curren$y - Pilot Talk
Curren$y - Pilot Talk II
Solar Bears - She Was Coloured In (Planet Mu)
filmic electronic music influenced by Tarkovsky, twin peaks, solaris...
http://breakingtunes.com/solarbears
why
has no one else this'd this?
the thread seems to be very top-heavy
stuff at the top has an insane amount of this's, while down near the bottom even the widely-acclaimed 'masterpieces' have relatively few. i think a lot of people just seemed to lose interest in the thread as it got bigger
Nouveaunoise - Paraphrase Accolade
textured, organic electro, recommended for fans of four tet
http://nouveaunoise.bandcamp.com/album/paraphrase-accolade
Strong Arm Steady - In Search of Stoney Jackson
2010 has been the year of the Madlib
Chilly Gonzales - Ivory Tower
Lots of fun, can't wait to see the film.
Wildbirds & Peacedrums - Rivers
suprised this wasn't up yet
Grimes - Geidi Primes
free album for d/l from here : http://www.myspace.com/boucherville
has elements of Bat For Lashes or Nite Jewel, except much more left-field and pretty weird at times. really really good
Her 'Halfaxa' album is great too.
not into it so much
although i only gave it one listen. that one listen felt like torture
US Girls - Go Grey
recommended for fans of Grouper, shadowy, ghostly stuff
Magenta Skycode - Relief
Just hauntingly beautiful. Great live as well.
Brilliant debut 'fight pop' EP
Secret Rivals (Oxford) who we have booked countless times have just released there debut through Josaka Records and its bloody brilliant...3 tracks of pure indie fight pop
check out samples

….
Clinic - Bubblegum
Gutted they've postponed their upcoming tour
Marnie Stern - Marnie Stern
C'mon people, keep up!
Envy - Recitation
Yeah it's more of the same - spoken word japanese poetry, post rock crescendoes and howled screamo bits but... they do it so damn well.
Belle and Sebastian - Write about Love
I CAN'T be the first person to suggest this surely? I swear to god I've cntrl-f'd the title and artist and come up blank.
So yeah, it's the new B&S, it's got some great tunes on it. It's not as good as tigermilk but then neither is 99% of all music ever made. So, recommended, ok?
Benoit Pioulard - Lasted.
*some snotty bullshit about how no one's mentioned it*
Sorry - I come across as something of a cock ^
but I mean... surely what... 85%* of people on here at least have 'If you're Feeling Sinister' and some interest in B&S. It is a bit boggling that no-one's thought to lash it up until a couple of weeks after release.
It's more like the general trend of this thread
and it's silly unless it's been like six months from the album's release.
Alasdair Roberts
Too Long In This Condition
Cath and Phil Tyler
The Hind Wheels of Bad Luck
Really beautiful, minimal folk. I can't stop listening to it. Ditto the Alasdair Roberts.
Philip Jeck - An Ark For The Listener.
genius.
Miniature Tigers - Fortress
Amazing
Oceansize - Self-Preserved While The Bodies Float Up
iLiKETRAiNS - He Who Saw The Deep
Ok, here's one that is seriously great
'Strange Birds' with their new self titled EP/album (it's seven tracks so call it what you like).
It's also FREE to download (if you're heartless and decide not to pay) on their bandcamp site. AMAZE BALLS.
that is all.
amazing producer, big record
Phaeleh - Fallen Light
Lux by Disappears
very boss.
Thread Pulls - New Thoughts
think Drum's Not Dead-era Liars or These New Puritans without the shitness
http://soundcloud.com/threadpulls
Strands - Strands
stream it here
http://state.ie/features/23452-stream-the-new-album-from-strands
Dwarr - Animals (Drag City)
ummmm....weird record, but also really great
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPb3tBK2tmQ
What the hell?
This caught me off guard. Going to have to look into this, what a trip.
Mini Mansions - Mini Mansions
Comes out this Tuesday. Read my review and listen to it here:
http://wp.me/pm8zG-bG
Sounds like the Beatles and Elliott Smith
John Roberts- Glass Eights
Jazz, Blues and Classical influenced deep-house. fantastic
Jefferson Airplane - Previously Unreleased Live Recordings
FINALLY! Probably the best live band of all time.... love love love it.
*Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 10/15/66 Late Show — Signe’s Farewell
*Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 10/16/66 Early & Late Shows — Grace’s Debut
*Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 11/25/66 & 11/27/66 — We Have Ignition
*Return to the Matrix 2/1/68
http://www.ccmusic.com/room.cfm?id=217
Taken together, the four releases confirm that at its best, when Jorma was soaring, Jack rumbling and the three voices joining in ecstatic melisma, no other band could ascend to the heights attained by the Airplane. Hand-picked by a team of devotees and featuring rare photos inside handsome digi-packs, these concerts distill and express the dream and promise of the Haight-Ashbury scene.
Scissor Shock - "Psychic Existentialism"
If you can't get excited about or at least annoyed/perplexed by this then give up on music.
http://www.archive.org/details/ScissorShock-PsychicExistentialism
Kylesa - Spiral Shadow
Oh yes.
About to listen to it ...
Loved the last album.
Great!
Might even like it more than the last year's.
Brian Eno - Small Craft On A Milk Sea
Cloud Nothings - Leave You Forever
Wyatt, Atzmon & Stephen - For The Ghosts Within
Robert Wyatt has been one of my favorite artists and this collaboration with saxophonist Gilad Atzmon and violinist Ros Stephen is one of his best. Melodious, quirky and politically charged.
Gucci Mane - The Appeal: Georgia's Most Wanted
Anyone with me on this?
Celph Titled & Buckwild - Nineteen Ninety Now
up there with Marcberg as one of 2010's best boom-bap hip-hop releases
Just bought this today!
Will report back.
Harvest the Beast - Bad Cop
My buddy's band just put out their first record, and I really dig it. Reviewed it here.
http://wp.me/pm8zG-8H
Brian McBride - The Effective Disconnect
The Sick Leaves - Last Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy
This album is really impressive in that it doesn't wear all its influences on its sleeve. Third album from this solo alternative/rock artist. Worth checking out.
Waka Flocka Flame - Flockaveli
^This this if you go hard in the paint.
Daisuke Tanabe- Before I Forget
Japanese twinkly mellow dub, sounds like múm remixed by Mount Kimbie
eg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5GDsFdaLqM
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - I Learned The Hard Way
If you like old school funk and soul.
Grinderman - Grinderman 2
According to another thread Cave and Ellis are cunts. Could well be, but I like them in this dirty old cunt phase.
Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record
Kind of expected this would be on here already. Well I liked it (obviously).
Next Stop Soweto vols 1 and 2
Think they were both released this year. Both are good - I like vol. 2 better, with the funk and psychedelia influences.
Sharon Van Etten - Epic
Senking - Pong [Raster-Noton]
consistently one of the best electronica chaps out there, this new record is an interesting, obviously owes a big stylistic debt to dubstep but recontextualises it into a smoggy, dark abstract-electronica template: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZToyrr4ckEg
Kanye West-My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
So it's taken 800 or so replies to get this baby.
Probably because its not out yet.
Too true, i'm just going on from what i've heard, Power, Monster and Runaway
Still looks like it's going to be album of the year.
Breathe Owl Breathe - Magic Central
More quirky jazz-folky stuff - first track 'Own Stunts' is one of the tracks of the year for me.
Gangrene - Gutter Water
collab effort from Alchemist and Oh No and as you'd expect it's never anything less than solid beats-wise. Oh No is a solid MC as well, needs to rap more.
solid
SOLID!
I plan on getting this soon.
Kemialliset Ystävät - Ullakkopalo
Thankyou to prunes who metioned it in his/her?? album of the year list. Finnish folk music, magical
Aloha - Home Acres
Solid indie rock with jazzy/mathy bits and dark poppy bits
Mogwai - Special Moves
Maybe not my first choice (but they we're already posted), still it's really good! Can't wait for their new record to come :]
Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit
next level Cascadian post-black metal
Dream Boat - Visions
witch house that plays out like a Hitchcock thriller. Relentlessly tense
Deathspell Omega - Paracletus
final part of their album trilogy is the most accessible and all out rocking. Good for everyone except Stewart Voegtlin.
Demdike Stare – Forest Of Evil / Liberation Through Hearing / Voices Of Dust
trilogy of LPs this year, incredible stuff. well travelled radiophonic hauntology music concrete memorabelia psychedlia....hard to pin down exactly.
Drudkh – Handful Of Stars
hoary old Ukranian forest metallers blaze through another set of minimal black trance
Winterfylleth – The Mercian Sphere
UKBM - heritage metal. gonna give them the benefit of the doubt, I think they have a good thing going.
Weapon – From The Devil's Tomb
Eastern mythological Satanism from Canada. Furious.
No Joy – Ghost Blonde
this one is just out on Mexican Summer. similar-ish to Tamaryn and Beach Fossils. shoegazy noise rock with US & UK 90's influences
Expressway Yo-Yo Dieting - Bubblethug [Weird Forest]
by the man who bought us Indignant Senility. exchanges the droney classical of that record for some kind of weird inversion of hip-hop (some might say hip-hop pastiche and get annoyed, and they might have a point, idk) which taps into the current fixation with dj screw and stuff like that. it's fun basically.
here's a free mixtape: http://www.mediafire.com/?h4o2jjd1jo4g5mx
Allo Darlin' - Allo Darlin'
Wonderful indie-pop
Allo Darlin' - Allo Darlin'
Wonderful indie-pop
The Divine Comedy - Bang goes the Knighthood
Teeth of the Sea - Your Mercury
Best and Worst of 2010
I just made my annual list. This'll probably be easier than actually typing every album out.
http://bit.ly/eqaFkO
Mark Fell - Multistability [Raster-Noton]
pretty cool glitch record from one half of snd. wins points for being partially recording in Grimsby (i think)
boomkat talk some shit about it being funky (odd how unlike p4k who feel the need to make dance music into idm, boomkat seem to want to turn what is essentially home-listening electronica into genres of underground dance music it has utterly nothing to do with. noticed it with a couple of things as well) ANYWAY...good record. complex digital glitch, with an innate sense of rhythm and funk.

Andy Partridge-Powers
The Sight Below - It All Falls Apart
This is a masterpiece.
Holy Sons - survivalist tales and
the Main Street Gospel's album
Bardo Pond - S/T
Heavy and powerful Psych Rock brilliance.

Third Eye Foundation - The Dark
wow! who knew Matt Elliot has another record under this moniker as strong as this in him? it's pretty great. check if you like World's End Girlfriend, errr...old 3rd Eye Foundation, Aphex Twin, idk. i'm not boomkat.
Serph - Vent
No doubt one of the best of the year.
Thanks for the heads up Jordan_229_2!
Mamadou Diabati, Jeff Lang and Bobby Singh - Djan Djan
This one just came up on my ipod again, after playing it heavily earlier this year. Lapsteel guitar, kora and tabla instrumentals - you can guess who plays what. Great stuff - you'll probably enjoy it if you liked the Toumani/Diabate album.
I LOVED Toumani/Diabate album!
Will sure check this out!
Grasscut - 1 inch 1/2 mile
here is an album that i felt went unoticed... I mentioned it in my "top 3 slept on albums of 2010"... some moments of pure brilliance
