Primal Scream post-XTRMNTR
In two separate threads over the last few days Primal Scream have copped a shellacking from a few folk for their post-XTRMNTR releases.
Generally, I'm on side with the critics, but with a significant exception: I reckon Evil Heat is a class album. I prefer it even to XTRMNTR.
So, a Q to all those who rate Primal Scream for the likes of XTRMNTR or Vanishing Point (or even Screamadelica, though it's quite different to the other three aforementioned albums): why no love for Evil Heat?

Primal Scream
it's just is not as good
and they renamed 'Bomb the pentagon' to 'Rise'.
BTP live sounded far better than recorded version of Rise.
not as good
meaning "crap generally", or "decent, but not as good"?
Sadly, I've not seen them live since about '93...
I really like 4 tracks off of it
And still think 'Detroit' is one of the best things they've ever done.
But it felt a bit cheap and like they were trying too hard to make XTRMNTR Part II to me. The video to 'Miss Lucifer' being a case in point...
Detroit is superb
I love dirty electro.
What are the other three tracks you rate?
Well probably (for what I can recall)
Autobahn 66, Skull X and Rise.
I quite liked 'Some velvet morning' too despite it's reputation. And I liked 'City' but thought the version on the David Holmes record 'Bow down...' was far etter. 'Miss Lucifer' was perfectly passable and fun, but not really much different to 'Swastika Eyes' I felt.
The rest left me feeling like they were ruffed up outtakes from Vanishing Point to be honest.
I forgot about that
yeah, david holmes version 'sick city' which was released the year before was far far better than their version - i really couldn't see the point of it.
I don't think people dislike Evil Heat especially
I just think it's rather overlooked whilst they're busy saying how rubbish Riot City Blues is
and as rubbish as RCB is
it's Screamadelica alongside Beautiful Future
I like it
I was a massive fan of XTRMNTR when it came out and Evil Heat sounded a bit half-baked in comparison. Sexier, more focussed and cohesive, but lacking in the pure bile and military chic that attacted me to it's predecessor... I actually believe every word Gillespie said before he started duetting with Kate Moss (although it IS a great cover) and generally going a bit trashy glam ponce rather than INCREDIBLY ANGRY CREW CUT SCOTTISH MENTALIST!!
Also the first track really pisses me off. And that track that was called Bomb The Pentagon and quite clearly should be the chorus refrain but has been replaced by a one word limp nothing, what is it?
yeh...
...Rise.
RISE! RISE!
urgh.
Never heard it as Bomb the Pentagon
I should see if I can find some love stuff floating about the place.
Not much wrong with Evil Heat.
Not as good as XTRMNTR, but it's not a bad album by any measure of the imagination.
I AGEE
ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING WHAT WAS GOING TO COME NEXT
THE MAYANS KNEW

Dammit DIS Forums!
DiS is responsible for the typos now?
Greatt!
it submitted it before I could edit the typo
I did not click post reply.
Thanks
I think XTRMNTR is objectively the better record
but I listen to Evil Heat more often. Deep Hit Of Morning Sun and The Lord Is My Shotgun are great songs
Yeah, Evil Heat would
probably be one of my 10 most listened to albums. And the one-two of Deep Hit of Morning Sun and Miss Lucifer is a big reason why.
i love evil heat
maybe not quite as much as xtrmntr, but almost. and beautiful future isn't all that bad either!
XTRMNTR is on my list of top ten overrated-on-DiS albums
In two words: Nathan Barley.
err
either you haven't heard it or you haven't see Nathan Barley.
fuck Enron!
fuck Enron!
fuck Enron cos it's fucking wrong!
I remember buying Evil Heat for about 4 pounds
and I really enjoyed if aside from the aforementioned 'Deep Hit Of Morning Sun' and 'The Lord Is My Shot Gun' I also thought 'Autobahn 66' was a brilliant kraut inspired piece of work.
I actually thought for a long while
that Autobahn 66 was a Kraftwerk cover.
A Scanner Darkly is among the best tracks they have done..
but the album as a whole is a bit patchy. I'm not a big fan of their garage rock stuff, far too derivative. It's a shame they ditched the electro, but if Kasabian hijack your sound it's probably best to distance yourself as fast as possible. I rate it as their 4th best studio album after Screamadelica, VP, and XTRMNTR.
Beautiful Future
I think everyone really needs to listen to this again. It was ignored upon release and I never see it discussed. It's a really slick, smooth sounding pop album. Of course it's not a game changer like XTRMNTR but taken on it's own it's a great album. Glory of love, over and over, can't go back...all great stuff.
I like it
It might be my favourite PS album (although I've been going back to xtrmntr quite a bit lately). Saying that, I also like about half of Riot City Blues and I think the new one is OK, so what do I know?
i agree that it is no XTRMNTR
while it kind of sounds like it's trying to be.
still a good album, with a couple of great tracks. autobahn 66, detroit and rise being the standouts for me.
i prefer the other version of some velvet morning, i think its the single version?
