4th Annual DiSers Album of the Year poll
It's that time again. Instructions:
List your top five albums of the year. Any albums as long as they were released in 2008. Put them in order if you're that way inclined and #1 will score 5 points, #2 will score 4 points etc. If you can't/won't put them in order they'll all score 3 points. I'll total up all the points to find the DiSers top 50 albums of the year. Feel free to list more than five albums but note only the first five you list will score points.
I know it's still only 4th December so I'll leave this open until January if you feel you need to give albums that have just been released/will be released in December a fair go. As is the tradition, I'll go first:
1) The Gutter Twins - Saturnalia
2) My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
3) Angus & Julia Stone - A Book Like This
4) Sun Kil Moon - April
5) Portishead - Third
For those that are interested, results from previous polls linked below:

difficult
because some things have been good, but most seem too immediate to stand the test of time. Plus, I've not listened to 'everything' yet and probably wont in time anyway. and there are always albums that i never knew about that i listen to after the event that would make the list (Menomene friend and foe)
Anyway - In no order for fairness:

Vampire Weekend
honourable mentions to Flying Lotus, subtle and Q Tip.
Earth and Mogwai were great when I saw them but i never got the albums and i want them a lot. Only heard tv on the radio for the first time tonight and I left my copy of Why? in a mates house and haven't recovered it yet.

Though, had I bought the titus andronicus album sooner and given it more time, it may have got in.
Of the tiny amount of this year's music I have heard; these are my favorites:
1. Smile by Boris -both mixes- : ) + : ) = : )
I picked Smile for it's beauty, ferocity and freedom. Boris knows who they are and what they want to say. This thing is so raw and pure and honest that it is unstoppable in my ears. I was completely open to some other band to displace this as my number one pick but it just didn't happen.
2. Meanderthal by Torche
Meanderthal is nearly as glorious as Jane's Addiction's Nothings Shocking but in a much less pretentious manner (perry can't help it, I forgive him and I forgive douchebag for taking a medium umbrage to that statement which I have rethought because of said umbrage and it was a silly thing for me to say but still; Meanderthal does remind me of Jane's Addiction. Hard not to give Melvins this position, I almost did cause they were sooooooooo much better live than Torche was. But the night I saw Torche they were opening for Boris and there were three backlines set and everything was very rushed- gotta give them the benefit of the doubt. Meanderthal is perfect!!
3. Nude With Boots by Melvins
What can I say these guys shit awesomeness.
4. Doomsdayer's Holiday by Grails
This one sneaked under the wire (still time for more of that I suppose) and it is so wonderful. It is mercurial and hard to pin down, discribe, classify. All I can say is don't judge it by the title cause you will get caught going "what the fuck?". Haha- pick this up today!
*also Doomsdayer's Holiday get's my vote for best Artwork of 2008.
5. Street Horrrsing by Fuck Buttons
Ode To Joy 2. Beethoven would have loved this by candelight over his grouchy bachelor supper meal. I love it with everything- tried it while driving in a blizzard last night- maybe fuck buttons and iceskating this week END. No skating, sleeping mostly.
6. DØMKIRKE by sunn O))) (exclusively vinyl)
This SHOULD win on artistic merit alone but I feel that I gotta subtract points from sunn O))) cause they don't play by the same rules as these other bands. Through no fault of their own they intrinsically have more freedom to create than do the other bands I've mentioned. Artistic merit aside DØMKIRKE is everything church should be: Inspiring, Uplifting, Galvanizing and no sanctimonious bullshit- just good clean WORSHIP!!!
7. And The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull by Earth (vinyl)
It was me getting this on vinyl that made me do this- when you get yours you'll know what I mean. Dylan Carlson's honest themes make him the Aaron Copeland of Drone Metal.
8. Let The Blind Lead Those Who Cannot See But Cannot Feel by Atlas Sound
double lp w/ another bedroom ep (vinyl)
I loved cryptograms therefore I gotta love this.
9. Nouns by No Age
Randy and Dean keep the wierdoness coming!
10. Board Up The House by Genghis Tron
This was hard to love but I made it. (I wish they would get a real drummer)
Like I said I have only heard a paltrey amount of new music (still haven't heard Micro Castles or Weird Era Cont.). I am sure there is stuff out there that will blow the crap I mentioned out of the water- there always is.
Honourably Mentioned: The Slip by Trent, Wolves In The Throneroom, Ascend, Oren Ambarchi, Jarboe, The Magnetic Fields, Ministry, Secret Machines, Velvet Cacoon, Interpol (live in london), Wolftron, The Bug, Liars Demo Zip File, and Satan's ipod by Chris and Riley (my Son's collection of Garage Band throwaways- awesome)
