well, wasn't that fun?
front row 'ftw'! nice chattin' :D
i'd never heard that before. i shall have to buy it..
i do like the fact that they don't shy away from playing their multi-part epics live. The Island was incredible, especially the middle section!
actually i thought the tain was so appropriate in that concert hall setting, a proper multi-part story-telling composition.
also, it was funny when colin meloy couldn't climb back onto the stage..
did they reverse their normal thing and make everyone stand up?
I want to see Colin Meloy do stand up
the orchestra thing was entirely speculation. they did some dates with one in the US but they never said it was going to happen here.
I love a gig that ends with the entire band acting out being eaten by an enormous whale.
I thought it would be great though. Good sound but no atmosphere at all. People in front of me left before Mariner's! Plus, Colin's instructions took a lifetime! If you don't know it's about being eaten by a Whale you shouldn't be there. Not sure about opening with The Tain either.
was odd until the last twenty minutes
I was quite happy to hear Colin speak though. He tickles me
they were awesome. A really tight unit who can go from the sublime to the ridiculous in the blink of an eye. They pulled me in about 30 seconds into The Tain and I didn't lose my focus for ages until the end of the Mariners Revenge. My mind usually wanders midway through gigs. Admittedly the atmosphere was a bit strange - I wasn't sure whether I should be whooping or politely applauding as the venue seemed to suggest.
Most fun I've had at a gig in a long time. Colin is hilarious!
Were you sitting in front of me?
the beginning of The Island
just on the off chance
Colin almost fell on me in Culling of the fold. Quite disappointed he didn't.
is only a hello!
very good. I am going to dance like the bassist all the time.
they didnt play a load of my favourite songs :(
it was good and the ending was fantastic, but overall not a great gig for me
they didn't play at least 3 of my favourites. But it was worth the ticket price alone for the mariners revenge song.
but, y'know, they put on a great show and really that's what counts i think..
is a good thing!
yeah there are a few songs that were missing, but what they did play was so damn good it didn't matter.
but in a way that was cool because it's helped me really appreciate that it's a better record than I thought.
I may have to rethink my picaresque>>>>crane wife argument.
Picaresque in my eyes - there's very very little that does. But after listening to the EPs, Castaways and Cutouts and Picaresque loads recently I'd gone off The Crane Wife a little bit.
Its an instant hitter that IMO pales on repeat listens.
They have so many better/as good songs and to play almost solely off one album was a shame. The tempo was therefore mainly kept constant. I think the stories get lost in the pomp on Crane Wife.
Although I bet no one was expecting Apology Song.
I'm really sorry Steven, but your bicycle's been stolen
An instant highlight
the full story
in Oxford on Sunday. I'm looking forward to it, they were so, so entertaining at ATP last year.
by the people who say it had a strange atmosphere? it was a great atmosphere and a great gig.
have been at a different gig then because there wasn't an atmosphere where I was sitting. Typical London crowd + seats not a good combination.
it was very muted and weird. He was visibly confused at first
he would get everybody to stand up straight away but alas. I did think they were playing there because of the Orchestra but obviously I got it wrong as well.
then can i recommend not buying tickets for a fully seated venue.
i was right at the top and the atmosphere was good, people were very enjoying it. gerneally quiet during songs, big appluase...what were you expecting.
best part was that the sound was spot on.
performing in front of a theatre audience. Still, it didn't detract from my enjoyment.
to get the chance to sit down for a gig once in a while. To listen to the songs and be able to watch the members perform.
Thank god we didn't have to stand up the second the started. Thats even worse, doing that standing in a line dancing. If I cannot jump/move about I'd rather sit and watch/listen to the skill unfold before me.
