Now comes the turn of Felix White from The Maccabees. The Brighton-based lads (who you may have caught way back in 2006 at DiS' 6 Tips for 2006?!) have had one helluva year, riding a wave a critical acclaim for their darker, grander and some might say might Arcade Fiery-er, second album Wall of Arms. Yet, things haven't even peaked for them with this record as they'll be headlining the NME tour in Jan/Feb 2010. »

The girls wanna kiss her, the boys wanna be a fifth as cool as her. Onlookers gaze at the spiky leather jacket atop Japanese cloth and neon danglies. We look on in awe at her yoga poses whilst deep-throatin' a mic. Meanwhile, the blow-up eyes sway and the flutter-flying clouds of confetti stick to sweaty backs 'n' necks 'n' faces. Your usual Monday night out, this is not.»

This is the sound of regression, desperately seeking the Ferris Bueller days off, sitting on our Spiderman bedspreads, playing Prince of Persia, Double Dragon and/or Starfox, wearing Karate Kid peejays. This is escapism, going down the Warioland pipe and into a rabbit hole of hazy days which began with bonus levels before breakfast. »

Hesitance is rarely considered a virtue, but when you've been drunkenly dragged around the block as much as I have, you soon learn not to fall in love too easy. You learn that a great song does not a hit summer album make and that a well received record does not mean that you've got a band of the year on your hands. But not every band HAS to be the best of the best because sometimes - just sometimes - better than the rest is enough. Not every band has to save your life and untangle your knotted heartstrings. »
