Talk about a re-release: same edit, same b-sides, same bastard package. But still so fine.
Archie Bronson Outfit is a well-oiled machine. Ridden with lust, they are a refreshingly relentless dirge, complete with Sam ‘The Cardinal’ Windett's desperate wail. Recorded in Nashville, this folk-tinged gothic romp rings, surprisingly enough, with ‘derdang derdang’. As a sinister tale of jealousy founded revenge, it’s a thunderous affair that shares the similarly sordid pursuits of Nick Cave’s current collective, Grinderman.
They reason themselves from numbers one to twelve, the finest line being Windett’s realisation that “Eleven, I know I’m not your favourite man”. But you go ahead and pick your own, please. Though the trio decide to tone down proceedings in the company of The Duke Spirit’s Leila Moss on b-side ‘In The Shadow of Love’, they are at their best when muttering those primitive urges.
‘Dart For My Sweetheart’ sits far more comfortably as a highlight on the unremitting (South Bank Breakthrough Award-winning) album Derdang Derdang but, however you hear it, this is seedy brilliance.
