Chocolate Boyfriend

Label: Council Pop Records Release Date: 25/09/2006

Boyfriend? Or chocolate? It’s an agonising decision, and one I’m sure we’ve all had to make at some point… Well, maybe not. But if the message isn’t quite a universal one, the medium should nonetheless hit the national nerve: this is a straightforwardly brilliant slice of electro-pop disco-worthiness.

‘Chocolate Boyfriend’ has a delicious aura of tongue-in-cheek melancholy, a tasteful yet dancefloor-filling chorus and a breakdown in which singer Sarah is heard ordering chocolate on the telephone (“Which service do you require?” “Chocolate.”_) while an archly glamorous tune trips its way over a fizzingly minimal wave of synths. It’s very adult pop, but with far too much humour to sound painfully ironic and knowing. And the b-side ain’t bad either – ‘tis somewhere between ‘Let’s Hear It For The Boy’ and Pet Shop Boys (if you can imagine such a thing in a positive sense without your head imploding), and is a danceably melancholy ditty about post-one night stand disillusionment.

In summary: Schmoof are a sophisticated 80% cocoa electro blend for an audience who like their fun smooth and sophisticated – and with a hint of bitter darkness…

OK. I’ll stop now. And seriously: drop the artistic pretension, and indulge in this sinfully sweet but guilt free confection…

Sorry.
