Things are going good for California’s Limbeck at the moment. They managed to snag themselves a support slot on The All-American Rejects’ European tour and are currently winging their way across the UK, slowly ingraining their sugary west-coast melodies into our island’s kids.
On the strength of this, their second LP, it’s easy to see why they and The Rejects are mutual admirers. ‘Hi Everything’s Great’ is a wonderful record, successfully managing to marry the understated power pop of legends like Teenage Fanclub to an atmosphere of great-outdoors America. Acoustic guitars strum blissfully underneath some great harmonies, while wistful perfection is reached on stand out tracks ‘Silver Things’, ‘I Wrote This Down’ and the sulky classic ‘Julia’.
It’s great to see underground US pop bands getting a look in over here for once. Limbeck are trying to invade the country with some colour – ironic considering the dull grey album sleeve – and should be congratulated for their efforts. As long as they can pull a few new tricks out of the bag next time around, their status is secure. This, however, will do just fine for now.
