A playlist of Q1 (first quarter) favourites that have been on heavy rotation at DiS HQ.
There's too much music around. There, we said it. Then again, with a name like ours, this idea of being deluged and lost in music is perhaps self-evident. That's just one way of interpreting our name, but it does seem in our teenage years (we turned 13 last year...) to be the idea people get when they think of us - as if we're some sort of lifeboat to stand in whilst the streams overflow.
We would love to say that from our years of fishing through emails, foraging through piles of post and flicking through page after page of streams that we're any better than you at finding out what's going on, but sadly we've not discovered some magic map to navigate the 30+ notable new releases each week and the 1000s of new bands bubbling up. That doesn't stop us trying to find ways of making it easier for you to find out about the best stuff that we've been hooked on.
We do alsorts of digests these days, rather than adding to the daily deluge. Here's new digest format. We're calling it - somewhat demandingly - Play this, Playlist. In essence it's a quarterly playlist series featuring a mixture of enornodome filling names (yes, Beyonce, Paramore, Prince and Katy Perry - take your snobbishness to P4K...), big names in our world (St Vincent, Wild Beasts, Mogwai, Phantogram) and a selection of new-ish acts that we're loving (Deathcrush, FEMME, Eagulls, Fka Twigs, Thumpers, Woman's Hour, Hospitality). Admittedly, this first quarterly playlist features a fair bit of stuff we can't stop listening to from our 2013 albums of the year list, but it's probably a good sign that we can't stop listening to Au Revoir Simone, NiN, Nick Cave &TBS and John Grant. It's 50 songs, and maybe that's a bit long, but then again, you'll have to wait three months for the next one...
We'd love to know what you've been loving so we will be compiling a DiS Reader's Q1 playlist from your suggestions over on the forums and on our Facebook page.
We've also exported this playlist to RDIO.
