Most brilliant Jazz quintet Polar Bear release their latest record, Peepers, on Monday. We review it today with Brad Barrett giving it 9/10 and writing:
"It’s not merely the vocabulary or fluency [of Peepers] but the dialect and conviction. We can speculate as to how their ethos and focus was developed from time spent in the company of other imaginative musicians – it could well be essential to their consistent evolution – but the evidence on Peepers leaves no doubt as to how successful this union of education and expression is."
To celebrate the release of Peepers, Polar Bear's leader Seb Rochford has released a free mixtape of much of his favourite music from 2009, and it has some truly worthwhile material on it. Like Harmonic 313 (Mark Pritchard) and Lightning Bolt, plus lots, lots more.
