Remember 2008? No, me either, but it happened, apparently. Some time in 2008 (possibly around this time last year, I believe) the BBC, led by Steve 'Lammo' Lamacq launched "Wear Your Old Band Shirt To Work" for the very first time. We are also told it was a raving success and that it also returns for 2009, hurrah!
The actual date of this event will be this Friday (December 4), and Lammo will be celebrating the day on his 6Music Radio Show, which runs from 4-7PM. He'll also be urging you, from the bottom of his heart, to wear your tatty tee to work, though it'll fall on deaf ears as most people have already started work by then.
The man himself said:
"The original T-Shirt Day was launched in response to all the celebrities who'd taken to wearing AC/DC and Rolling Stones T-shirts which their stylists had probably bought them! We thought it would be a good idea to reclaim the band T-shirt for us awkward music fans - and have a day where we could all show off the shirts we have hidden in a cupboard at home."
"Last year we had an amazing response. Everyone from scientists in chemical labs to people in building societies took part - so we thought we'd do it again."
"I say: dig out your T-shirts and be proud! Show the world we care who we wear on our chests; and that "we were there at the Brixton Academy in 1998" or "we travelled all the way to Wolverhampton on a Tuesday in November and still have the shirt to prove it."
As well as celebrating the humble - or not so - band shirt, he'll also be running a t-shirt amnesty. So, anyone to ashamed of theirs can send it into the show and be in with the chance of winning an official WYOBSTWD shirt, designed by Steve himself. There will also be some kind of picture gallery on the 6Music website - you know, like the ones they normally do. Yeah. Those.
And here's the poster for it, Lammo looking pretty pleased with himself.
DiScuss: Will you be wearing an old band t-shirt to work on Friday? Why not you miserable bastard? Don't have a job? Well, that's fair enough then? Work in a bank? OK, good point. What old band shirts do you have in your wardrobe? I'm not a massive fan of them - only one I've got is a Soledad Brothers one from circa 2004. A size too small, you see. Waste of money.
