Today (January 15) sees the launch of a new record label that's got us a little hot under the collar judging by its initial roster of acts.
Records On Ribs has been set up by the same people who brought us the wonderful but now defunct Good Name For A Racehorse label a couple of years back.
Co-founder Alex Andrews explains:
"The concept (of Records On Ribs) is fairly simple - although you will be able to buy CDs from us, all in lovely and unique packages and made to order, all our music will be available for free download as high-quality MP3s or FLAC files, subject to a Creative Commons license that allows for sharing and remixing. It will be available as a direct download. It will clearly be as independent as possible - relying on open source software also."
Records On Ribs’ roster includes many refugees from Good Name For A Racehorse, as well as a smattering of new signings, and on the launch day (today) each artist will release something new plus the vast majority of their back catalogues. It is likely to see the launch of regular co-promotional nights in Nottingham courtesy of Alex and co-partner Dave Bell (of The Exploits Of Elaine fame).

In ROR-related news, we're sad to announce that Leeds experimental four-piece The Butterfly are splitting up, with their last gig due to take place at the Brudenell Social Club on Friday January 18. They are hoping to put out one more final studio EP, Time Spent In Reconnaissance is Never Time Wasted, plus a re-release of Impatient Orchid as well as a live album of their final show, The Butterfly Are Sacked.
