Hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden, Andreas Werliin and Mariam Wallentin are both: married, and in a band together. That band is Wildbirds & Peacedrums, and earlier this year they released their astonishingly raw, striking debut album in the UK via The Leaf Label (review).
For this DiSer they’re undoubtedly one of the discoveries of the year: an amalgamation of scuzzy blues, rampant improvisation and fervent emotion – drums blistering and Wallentin’s voice captivating (anyone lucky enough to have seen this pair live will know what I’m talking about, for they are astonishing). Here, then, is a video-led mixtape Andreas compiled for us, where widely perceived gems rub shoulders with Wagner and solo percussionists. Of it, he states: “this is simple music that makes us shiver.”
Nina Simone ‘Ain't Got No / I Got Life’
The first lady of all times.
Portishead ‘Machine Gun’
One of 2008’s most breathtaking songs – the silence in between says everything.
Perishers ‘Step Out Of The Shade’
Amazing song, and one of the most beautiful videos ever.
Nana Vasconcelos (solo percussion)
Pure and simple music made with wood and voice. Seeing him live is a life-changing experience.
The Whitest Boy Alive ‘Burning’ (live in Mexico)
Great song – I love the way this skinny white boy makes Mexico City explode.
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (live on French television)
This could be one of the best ever studio performances. Look out for Jackie Chan in the studio...
Fleetwood Mac ‘Dreams’
My favourite song right now.
Chris Corsano at Harvest Time
One of the all-time great improvisers.
Birgit Nilsson ‘Liebestod’
A perfect ending by the greatest Wagner singer.
