“Just stop it, seriously.”

This is what I was expecting to hear, something like four weeks ago, following the third play of Mirrored that day in the DiS office. But no resistance was proffered; not one person stamped a foot down and demanded we listen to something a little more, say, easy. And the reason’s a simple one: for all the shop window dressing that accompanies the release of this, the debut album from Battles, it’s an album full of simple pleasures. You put it on; you dance in your chair. Simple, and _so_ pleasurable.

Sure, the constituent parts – the four individuals that comprise this super group but not supergroup – are wonderfully schooled in musical ways considerably wayward of the beaten track: Tyondai Braxton is the son of acclaimed jazz musician Anthony Braxton, while drummer John Stanier and guitarist Ian Williams served time in supremely leftfield alt-rock acts Tomahawk/Helmet and Don Caballero respectively, and completing cog Dave Konopka’s skills with the six-stringer are leagues ahead of many a would-be virtuoso. But such emphasising of the band’s technical ability detracts rather from the immediacy of Mirrored, from the record’s seemingly innate ability to have the know-nothing tapping along on but a cursory exploration.

This is a dance album, to be as succinct as is possible; it’s a collection of songs, of twisting and intertwining melodies and beat patterns, that make the listener – be they a jazz fan or a hip-hop fan or a rock fan or whatever – want to get up and jump around; they’re songs for handclaps and finger snaps, for arms-aloft celebration and the kind of revelry most associated with sweaty denizens of E-culture clubland. Anyone with only half their mind open, with the slightest desire to experience new sounds and visions, will already know that ‘Atlas’, Mirrored’s lead single (10/10 review and video here), is the best dance single of the year; here, in its seven-minute extended mix (12” mix, anyone?), it’s even more glorious than the version that pounds from your TV/PC while four men become sixteen become two-hundred-fifty-six like something from a sci-fi fairytale that’s on in the middle of the night on Film 4. It’s all glam-rock stomps and marching band brrrumpty-bumpts and finger mouse squeaks and possesses a spine-tingling incessancy comparable only with those hammers that just won’t quit in ‘Another Brick In The Wall’. It’s all brilliant, eleven ways up and seventeen times better than anything the band had previously produced. And that includes the impeccable elegance of ‘Tras’.

Quite amazingly, ‘Atlas’ isn’t even this album’s absolute highlight (although that’s partially because it’s such a neatly flowing LP, such a coherent and concise listen, that individual tracks merge and segue in such a way that it becomes a single composition, fractured merely for the sake of impatient consumers). ‘Ddiamondd’ twitters and flutters and spirals and builds and crashes and throbs wonderfully – screeches and alien laser blast buzzes battle against a tide of bass-heavy all-engrossing soundwaves. Pausing to skip a few tiny stones across the surface of the still ocean of ‘Bad Trails’ and ‘Prism’ – comparative breathers on an album of convulsive, spasmodic, limb-twitchers – the passenger’s tossed and turned throughout ‘Snare Hanger’, a glorious two-minute patchwork of disjointed vocal effects and drums from another dimension. But, as expressed earlier, the complicated means produce an oddly accessible end: not once on Mirrored do Battles forget that they’ve an audience to entertain, as well as themselves.

And this is why Mirrored is so much more than its preceding EPs – whereas before in their career the four-piece seemingly tossed myriad elements about with little to no regard for the actual acceptability of the composition at hand, here each and every piece – pieces that truly do flow into one another quite magically – sinks into the listener’s synapses silkily, short-circuiting them through disbelief rather than a simmering intolerance. Penultimate piece ‘TIJ’ is something of an icing on the cake arrangement: collecting together what feels like every trick Mirrored has pulled from its ample sleeve up ‘til this point, the song’s a dazzling, befuddling, mind-bending, perception-altering slice of alternative I don’t know what… just where do you rack an LP that blurs boundaries like watercolour paint on a soggy page, that defies convenient categorisation by being at once everything you want and need in an album and like nothing you’ve ever heard before. It’s otherworldly yet startlingly familiar at times; it echoes the work of forefathers from a wide range of musical hemispheres but augments many a facet from history in a manner that’s entirely unique. As individuals you feel these men, these musicians, are nothing particularly special, footnotes in modern music’s evolution; what they’re capable of creating together, though, is nothing short of peerless.

Now a dilemma dawns: where do Battles go from here? The bar’s been set at such a height that it’ll be a miracle if Mirrored’s makers themselves will clear it with ease a year or two from now. That, though, is speculation and contemplation for a different day; in the here and now, Battles are making an office full of grown men dance like six-year-old bridesmaids at a wedding reception, to Yazoo or Men At Work or something. And the last thing we want to do is stop, frankly. We’ll be here ‘til the fizzy pop rush dies, which ain’t any time soon…

It actually took me a while to get into

But I've got it on now, and it has such an impact on me.
Definitely a 9, yes.

this is an amazing album

this is a 10 for me. surpasses there previous album, Tij is a brilliant song.

I liked this a lot on initial listens

but as with the EPs, it soon got boring.

Really?

We had a little poll in the office - nobody is bored of it yet.
We must have played it... I dunno... 25-30 times?

Yar.

Although it's really impressive on a technical level, I find it really empty and soulless. 7/10 for me.

it took a while..

first few listens passed me by without leaving any mark (except thinking that Atlas was needlessly bonkers). Now I am thinking that it's probably album of the year.

fantastic review

this album is incredible, by far one of the best of the year, and will probably be remembered as a groundbreaking release years from now. i've never seen such an interesting, innovative record get so much praise and attention from across the mainstream board.

I'd agree

from what I've heard of it so far (about half the album, loud on headphones), it's impressive but there's not much else to it. Will give it a proper listen soon, methinks.

i very much like this

but i did tire of it slightly after many listens. not to disparage a great record.

but now it's finally released and i bought my copy to play in the office and share with my colleagues, to get hounded... accused of 'atlas' being "whats this pinky and perky shit" some people just don't get music.

What is that???

After reading the review I went to their myspace site and listened to Race In and Atlas. I'm still not sure what I heard but now know I wont be buying the album! After only one listen I would describe it as a 'repeating mess'. If thats ground breaking roll back time!! It sounds like something a dead child would make on his PC, but hey, everyones got the right to an opinion!!

fair enough

but most people who aren't used to their kind of music didn't find 'Atlas' at all pleasing at first.

Love some of it-

Atlas and Tonto especially. Some of it is pretty rubbish after my first few listens but hopefully it'll grow on me.

wasn't sure at first

loved atlas but wasn't really sure about the rest of the album and yet it did grow on me. To me its slightly sinister sounding, this isn't a bad thing.

10 for me too

best album iv heard in a long time

Very good review

Have only listened to the album twice so far, but hope i'll still be loving it at the year

Listening to it on the train this morning

it was pretty meh. Listening to it again tonight in my room I'm really enjoying it. Such a strange array of sounds and noises yet still very tuneful. Looking forward to seeing these guys live next week in Manchester.

Ugh

I've tried to listen to this in a variety of different settings and in a variety of different frames of mind, and I still find it inane and completely boring. This is doubly annoying because all I'd read about it beforehand had me thinking I'd definitely like it, being a big fan of instrumental mathy disco rock and the like... but there really isn't much that appeals to me here. The tellytubby vocals make me feel like I'm having a nightmare, a lot of the amusical bleepy bloopy noises make me feel like I'm hungover with a dreadful headache and an urgent urge to vomit, and there's absolutely nothing rhythmically inspiring apart from the pretty cool drumming on the first track. "Atlas" in particular - and quite ironically given that it's the single and the tune on the album people bang on about the most - is excruciating for me to listen to. I'd like to think that it'll grow on me, and I won't rule it out, but at the moment it ain't looking likely.

i bought this on the way to work

pretty much because of this review

if i'm not 100% happy there'll be trouble. BIG trouble

Have only listened through

the album once and Atlas stands out for me so far. Was expecting more vocals on the other songs.

Think it will need a few more listens to fully absorb it.

Not sure it would be considered dance music (whatever that means)

This album is really...

inspiring! I was blown away when they played the Mars Volta ATP and this record just takes it up a notch. The rhythms are incredible and the repetition spot on. Gotta love those loops. Roll on ATP vs The Fans!

High five, Dives.

Win it!

This week in my radio show I've got 2 copies of the Battles album to giveaway. Both copies are excellent so you can't go wrong either way..!

Wednesday night at 8pm BST, and again on Saturday morning at 4am BST.

www.bcbradio.co.uk or BCB106.6FM in the Bradford area.

xo alb

it sounds very alien..

..on the initial listening's, as said in the review "an album like nothing you've heard before". On repeats it is rewarding, you have to give it time. It's just like the first time you started listening to serious music. You can tell there's something there that eludes you, its just takes you ahwile to work out what it is.

Great album

And a great progression fron the EPs, except those damn silly vocals. My favourite song's probably the last one, where the twiddly call-and-response guitars get attacked by that fat drumbeat. John Stanier's a bad, bad man.

yes

i for one enjoy the fact this album is cold and cerebral.
fuck emotions, they're rubbish.

GREAT BUT

it does sound incredibly like animal collective in places and parts...

maybe

its starting to grow on me but i still find atlas a complely redundant novelty-for the use of mobile ringtones only. some of the other tracks are great but i can't get away from the feeling that its just one step away from Yes style progressive noodle rock nonsense.

agreed

but only in parts

I was sceptical at first

but then saw the video for atlas, and it all fell into place. amazing

A missed opportunity

I thought this band were something, releasing records on different tiny labels, working on word of mouth toward an integrated conflict of rhythm/melody and rock/dance, acoustic/electric dualisms. First 3 ep's hinted at that and so much more, particularly the minimal jazz fused elements present on the tras single and the end of epC.
Warp appears and absorbs Battles into itself, destroying the battle as only dance can win with warp(it's a dance label). Dance won. Battle over.
Mirrored is a dance record without the style and appeal of 'real' dance records. There are positive moments but it ultimately fails and as hinted in the title the mirror reflects - the battle is now internal. I do not expect another record from these guys. The project is too big.
It's a shame when you become too cool for school. I was really excited about this record, as i was about the previous eps. This disappointed. Deeply.

where?

Amazing

Show in london, completely amazing!

it

certainly is a grower! each track has so much going on so it stands up to repeat listens! the vocals are a great addition as well! i felt there was something lacking on their EP's, and this fills fills the gap nicely! annoyed that i haven't brought it to work with me today, i'm really in the mood to listen to it now *sulks*

All this talk of a dance record...

I get where you and a few others on here are coming from, I really do, but it's not really club-worthy is it? Theres hints here and there, and moments of it, but whats wrong with that anyway?

Maximo Park are on Warp too... and they're hardly churning out electro anthems

the other view

Warp records began as a dance label.

All that said Battles do what they do(well). I guess it's all a little too self indulgent and wanky for my liking. Like Braxtons silly vocals on Atlas, amusing in a crazy frog way with a pounding almost glam beat over it. Alright if pissed in a club, annoying if not. I guess that's my problem. I really want to like this record, and in a way I do, it's just not the record i was hoping for. Lets see if they can impress me at atp...

I can guarantee they'll impress live

amazing at Scala last night. I dont agree that they're annoying unless you're drunk though. I dont get that at all. I listen to it in the morning before I go to work. Puts me in a weird but good mood

No fair point

Above all, Warp will always be an electronic label no matter how they shift away from those early days.

But I do think they're trying to broaden their horizons a bit with this kind of cerebral math-rock-dance-stuff.

those vocals grated on me at first too, yet now they're part of the tapestry for me. Which is odd, as Akon's Lonely isn't a million miles away from this vocal-wise, and thats one of my 5 most hated songs ever...

Spot on.

I got this on monday and have listened about 10 times. Its really awesome, but oddly seems a bit short. It really flows as an album, almost too well. Some great moments, but im starting to get a bit... not bored... but, y'know. Its still great

Feel the same way

I do.

I just can't get into this one.

the vinyl

is a work of art in itself, I'm gutted I missed these at ATP vs the fans, had to do with a mushy sounding Wilco, they are going to tour this new record I hope?

I went to FOPP

and this was blasting out loud.

Everybody cheerin and humming.

Flavour of the month.

Rapture, anyone?

anyone who doesnt like it

just doesnt get it.

Battles just

blew me away

HYPE

no more. Average math-bore, which it's cool to like.

But my instinct tells me they're fake.

excuse me?

wut?

Daft

I don't think the label would have told the band to change their style so that it's more like dance music just because they released Aphex Twin 5 years ago. Most of the the Warp roster aren't dance acts these days: Broadcast, Gravenhurst, !!!, Grizzly Bear, Maximo Park.

ok

average math-DANCEY-bore, then.

Don't get me wrong: I (kinda) like it. But it's starting to fade out.

Only just listening to this

I love it.

I bet its brilliant if you're on drugs.

"Mirrored"

This is such a groundbreaking record and it continues to grow on me. It's addictive, it's memorable and practically perfect.

I can understand why some people may not like this but if you don't then atleast appreciate how amazing of an effort this is. What they have done here is a great thing for music.

Ddiamondd is

far and away the best thing on this record. It's wonderful.

No.

There'z nothing to "get" about this band or this album. It's pure shit, through and through. Stop overrating it.

i firmly

disagree Mr. Antennas. Took me a few listens and then something clicked - mainly the goddam GROOVE this band have - and I can't now describe how I love this album.

good review

i have found it pretty hard to get bored of this album,
a few of my friends gave told me they found it pretty unaccessable,
maybe having listened to don cab has desensitised me to this sort of thing

good album
but
american don is better
x

took me ages to get into it

but once youre there, youre definitely THERE!tonto is my fave song of the year

Yep
