Scarlet Soho

Ruthless Animation

Label:

1540
_kp_ by Kate Price March 26th, 2002

Hmm… where to start…? This is a pretty impossible single to review – Scarlet Soho play the kind of music that sounds completely different every time you hear it. On this one particular play through, this is what I hear…

Three out of the ordinary pop-rock outbursts with a digitised modern twist that glam-rockers Mansun would be jealous of. Space Ship Scarlet Soho sweeps away current music trends and hurtles into the future. The looming absence of a drummer is more than compensated by the ultramodern beeps and bleeps of keyboards, samples and dance beats.

Ultimately, whilst influences from the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins and Mansun seem distinct, ‘Ruthless Animation’ lies in its own genre. Not quite rock, but not quite pop, Scarlet Soho zoom over current music clichés and define themselves as one of the more adventurous bands around. Although perhaps not bound for the dizzy heights of commercial success, Scarlet Soho will not be easily forgotten.
