The poet has been drinking.

Well, odds-on slurping whiskey straight from the bottle, leaving his maple eyes spinning 'til the sun comes up. Then scribbling lyrics set to the morning news, his fair-trade coffee leaving rings upon love letters cluttering the floor. The hangover is yet to come.

Months of autonomously writing an era-defining album later and here we are. Set to the back-drop of Palestinian/African/Korean/American revenge=revenge=revenge bloody beliefs and the unsanity that is Bush; Conor could have followed up the gigantic widescreen folk'n'roll symphony of 'Lifted…' with an album of rambling cod-Dylan rants. He could have given in and just let himself sell out in the worst kind of Ryan Adams wanky meandering. Worse still he coulda vanished into a haze of lame Neil Young tributism. Or gone all out to make a shouty, dissenting, scuzzy yet clever, oblivion gazing punk racket. But thank fuck for his romanticism and restraint.

The, i-wanna-push-some-musical-boundaries, Christopher Columbus quest to ensure plaudits'n'cred, other album 'Digital Ash from a Digital Urn', with its brave IDM Boards of DTNEL vibe (reportedly co-written with The Faint), is on the whole a triumph. But Digital Ash doesn't whole-heartedly connect and it's not Conor doing what he does best. And almost nobody does classic blues-folk-Americana-indie better than Bright Eyes. With 'I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning'_ he's top of his game and the result is near heart-stopping, allowing us to sit half in the ideal world of Conor and half inside a cauldron of 3am thoughts. Whilst musically, there's still a sense of evolution, with these two albums Conor Oberst/Bright Eyes shows so much will to push things forward whilst sharing anecdotes and gorgeous tricklings of imagery.

It's the closeness and the honesty which makes 'I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning' a thing of awe. The compulsive, calculated attention to detail is in the Braille textured production, but it's the lyrics where Conor shines through, with every sniff of journo-sensationalism shot down. There're nods to the beats in 'Travelling Song' and closing screams at the travesty of modern day war, with just about every 30seconds offering wide-eared wonderment, such as the sweetness of a gypsy placing a lucky flower in his hair and the dark everyday correlation of a child pointing a twig gun.

If you listen too closely you can already hear rows of inspired OC viewers marching away from a world that allows apes to reclaim the planet. Then again, there's a real sense of wanting to preach beyond the converted and it's that which is truly exciting. Subtle, news paper reading, coffee-shop punk is the future.

It feels, at the time of writing, like this is a classic album or at least an album thats importance can't be scotch-missed, because it's saturated with the detritus of the decade. Hyperbole? Maybe. Maybe not. But when you add it all up (plus the fact there's the amazing maple syrup vocals of Emmy-Lou Harris and Azure Ray), put it in a context and begin to believe what this could be a catalyst into building, then the prospect is more exciting than Conor accepting an Elvis style movie contract. Add melodies far beyond his 24years and this is truly special.

So buy this, hear the things you've been half-dreaming and if nothing else, help fill Conor's mouth with bourbon fuel for the next album which should drop in time to soundtrack some realistic political opposition. And anyway, you know you'll only end up buying this in 5/10/20/30 years time... if there is any world left to buy it in.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Eeeep! Hurry up boyfriend get out the shower and then we can go into town and BUY these albums! I've been counting down the days til now...

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Good for you.have fun!

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

the sound of lonliness makes me happier

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I listened to both albums last week...
This one is pretty good; the last track 'road to joy' is phenomenally interesting.
The good thing about these releases is that he seems to not be singing in his 'i'm about to cry' voice...It's good..

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

The beauty of this record for me is the language within it. The use of idioms, metaphors and the themes and imagery. His grasp of melody never falters and like a great book, there's always a fantastic one-liner to make you look up, smile and rewind.

Also, I think many regular readers of the site will notice that Mr. Adams has finally learned to restrain his writing style and what you get is a very succinct and on the ball appraisal put down in a most eloquent an emotional manner.

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Yes, this review is the controlled and more effective cousing to that maybe-great maybe-awful Sigur Ros review from way back. Anyway, I've not liked any Bright Eyes I've heard before, but this review (among the many) has inspired me to check this album out.

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Yeah, true, but he's written this well for over a year now. I'd imagine if you look at anything on his profile now, it'll be good.

Happy Bright Eyes Day everyone.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Things I thought about this record on a couple of listens...

1) 'Poison Oak' was the best track. A real tearjerker.

2) Early on it felt like a Home E.P with the guy from My Morning Jacket, and I think that mix of guitar sounds and vocals worked really well. Shows he knows who to work with at the right time.

3) 'Landlocked blues' was formerly 'One foot in front of the other' on the Saddle Creek sampler,
and I think the original edges the Emmylou version.
Her harmony vocals are excellent throughout, however.

4) This record is the equal of Fevers and Mirrors, and deserves all the credit it gets.

5) Will have to get a copy of Digital Ash now. Damn!

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I was hoping he would up date the “the worlds got me dizzy again, you’d think after 22 years I’d be used to the spin” line from one foot… to 24 years in landlocked blues. I loved that line when I was 22 I thought I’d get another year out of it sadly not.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I love Fevers and Mirrors. Will I love this?

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

My god its brilliant! I love the intro to track 1 - we're going to a party! Haven't listened to Digital Ash yet but very much loking forward to it :)

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

It lacks the drama of fevers and mirrors, he seems to have calmed down a bit. I’d say that sound-wise its closest to the oh holy fools split. of course you'll love this.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

"The good thing about these releases is that he seems to not be singing in his 'i'm about to cry' voice...It's good.."

I love his 'I'm about to cry' voice. Getting both the albums in half an hour, although I've already heard this one and it is fantastic.

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

No, no. It's got a couple of blasts from Fevers in there, when he really wants to crecendo you can hear him lurch back to that.
And it's got all the melody of Haligh in there. If not a billion times more.
If you don't like it, and you're a Bright Eyes fan, there's no saving you from your elitist hellworld.

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

!?! who doesn't like it?

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Thanking you - its on my to buy list.

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I don't think it's very good. I appear to be the only person in the world who thinks so though. I can't really defend my point or argue my case though. I just think it's shit. Sorry!

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I like the review. It is very peachy.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Thankyou so much Sean, all the other reviews i've read of this and digital ash.. have had an irritatingly pensive and withdrawn style to them. Your piece though is (finally) one which highlights not only that this is the defining artwork of our car/competition obsessed generation but exactly why. One thing the world needs more of are people who are Wide Awake, soon it will be Morning.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Oh dear god these are amazing albums, def. an evolution and the best stuff he's ever done. Anyone seeing him on the "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" tour? I'll be at the GUU in glasgow on the 11th, which is a bitch since all my friends are going to Mars Volta on that day, I have to go on my own...

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

How come everybody's already heard them - you must have gone out and bought them immediately - I preordered both from cd wow but I haven't got them yet. No fair! Me want!

The general consensus seems to be that Wide Awake is better than Digital Ash, but I have to confess I was more looking forward to the latter. Does anyone prefer DA?

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

can't you by them on your own ?

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

i'm not happy. i wanted to go see bright eyes and rilo kiley at manchester acadmey coz i saw them over the summer and they were both amazing but my so called friend wouldnt get me a ticket and they've sold out! :( ohh yes and he got advance copies of both albums and wouldnt let me borrow them. isn't he mean depriving me of conor?! check out rilo kiley coz they rock too!!!

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Hmm. Sounds good. I'm really confused as to which, if either, to buy now.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

iv bought both ..... so far nme is the only place to say digital ash is the better of the two
but what would they know, they usually slag people like connor off for being wet and emo ....... not that i can think of any other places or websites that used to slag him off and now love the guy

*cough*DiS*cough*

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

DiS = a collection of individual opinions.
NME = a singleminded pamphlet of sensory abuse.
Conor IS wet and emo.
But sometimes he's damn good, too.

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

to be fair to the NME, they gave his last album a very favourable write up and that was how i got into him in the first place. i guess that makes me subhuman scum...

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Reading NME? yeah, probably, but we're all guilty of it now and again.

A lot of people seemed to change their mind about Bright Eyes with that album. People who thought he was whiney and self-indulgent (which he is), gave him the benefit of the doubt, and the other albums just made much more sense in that context.

I think I'm actually paraphrasing Sean with the second half of that last sentence, cos he's said that somewhere before. I'd link it if I could remember where. It is true though.

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

To be fair, people only ever seem to remember the negative stuff we say or do and forget that we've written quite a lot of hyperbolic pawing over Conor for several years now. Infact, I think within the first 100 articles on the site there's a live review calling him a genius but our database is a bit hard to find old stuff at the moment as profiles only show the last few articles... blah.

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

They were floating around on soulseek months before hand... I got copies in November I think.

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Yeah but I was at my boyfirends house and it would have been rude to just run out the house while he was in the shower, wouldn't it?

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Poison Oak is still the best track. Agreed about Landlocked blues. It's really good, but the original was really really good.

At this early stage (4 or so listens) I'd say it's not as good as lifted or fevers, but the closing 3 tracks more than make it worthwhile.

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

fair point. comment withdrawn

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I've got my copies now, and have quite a few bits and pieces to say about them;

1) Digital Ash is easily as good as I'm Wide Awake, so ignore the fact that most reviewers prefer the latter; which one you will prefer depends on the individual. That said, Digital Ash can be a bit confusing on the first listen.

2) One song that seems to be persistently ignored by reviewers is Light Pollution, which is brilliant.

3) He really opens and closes I'm Wide Awake in style; with the story at the start and his final, unrestrained screaming at the end of "Road To Joy", with the final line "I'm wide awake, it's morning". Genius. You're going to see see "lets fu** it up boys, make some noise" as much as you saw "can I get a goddamn timpane roll..." quoted.

4) I'm a little irritated that there are only nine songs on Wide Awake, (if you don't count the new version), and I definitely prefer "One foot in front of the other" to "Landlocked Blues", even though Harris's vocal is rather special.

5) If "Arc of Time" sounds a bit like Sesame Street, have you noticed how part of "I Believe in Symmetry" sounds like "99 red balloons"?

Anyway, I can't wait for 2007's hip-hop / classical record.
Only kidding, but who knows?

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

<a src="http://www.cokemachineglow">cokemachineglow had a generally very scathing review of Digital Ash In A Digital Urn but claimed that Light Pollution was the best song. I like it a lot although Arc Of Time and Down In A Rabbit Hole are my favourites. And I prefer that album of the two so far although I haven't had chance to listen to them more than a few times yet.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

"i'm wide awake..." is beautiful. i bought it and was very pleasantly surprised at the sincerity, and simplicity.

i bought the "take it easy (love nothing)" ep when it first came out, but i doubt i'll buy "digital ash...", as poor reviews of it all point out things i dislike in records... but it may yet be good, i'll have to wait until a friend buys it.

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I argee, "I'm Wide Awake..." is beautiful (my only problem with it is the Land locked blues - it doesn't compare to One foot in front of the other). But PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't dismiss "Digital Ash..." because of bad reviews. I don't know why so many people don't seem to like it, maybe because it's different, but I think it's amazing. I love both records equally.
Favourite tracks: "I'm Wide Awake...": At the bottom of everything, First day of my life, Road to joy.
"Digital Ash...": Goldmine Gutted, Arc of time, Devil in the deatils, Easy/Lucky/Free,

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

"… if there is any world left to buy it in."
*shudder*
a creepy note to end on mr. adams.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Screw 5/10/20/30 years. I bought this and lsitened to it at 3am and by fuck did it have me in tears by the ending.

"Let's fuck it up boys, make some noise"

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I heard most of it last last. Wide Awake - 4/5.

Fans of the music forum know I've been singing the Silver Joos' Starlite Walker (4.5/5) record. Funny then that my friend played this one for me cos they're of the same vein. While Oberst doesn't quite meet DC Berman's highs Wide Awake had a little more consistancy. I'm not a huge Conner fan, but what can I say: if it's good it's good.

Re: Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I meant to say I heard it last night. I also meant to say 'singing the praises of' and to give Starlite Walker 5/5. *shrugs*

Must turn off battery now...and...go..h.o..m...e

I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

One of the best albums you'll ever hear

Better Late than Never

Got this at HMV yesterday for bob all. Worth waiting for. Lovely stuff.

love it
