second album from australia's favourite electro-teens. this time they aren't mucking around with ping pong, they're playing dress-ups with gloves. the album is full of gems to keep the party going, operator please are showing that they're aging like a fine wine and just keeping on getting sweeter. 'gloves' feels more natural, less bolted-on than that of cassette kids' nothing on tv: it's more teenagers striving up than suits imposing down. then there's simply better writing. take your pick from b'ack and forth's slightly caribbean pop, 'like magic's sophistication, the power push of 'just kiss' against the echoes of orchestral manoeuvres in the dark in 'oh my'. then there's the way 'jealous' puts you in mind of one of those '80s radio hits that you knew you were supposed to be above liking but you kept finding your way back to on some kind of summer hits of 1984 compilation album. operator please may well see that 'king of the pop hill' summit this year.
