the second album from seattle's cave singers is released once again on matador records. it is entitled 'welcome joy' and adds a world of colour and nuance to the already great songs from their 2007 debut. the trio of peter quirk, derek fudesco and marty lund were joined on this record by amber webber (black mountain, lightning dust) and ashley webber (lightning dust). the album is a gorgeous, rich folky stew hitting musical touchstones from led zeppelin 'iii' (think 'bron yr aur stomp') to iron and wine, ccr, fleet foxes, bon iver, and will oldham. with a healthy dollopof the more mournful stevie nicks songs from fleetwood mac's mid-'70s period. produced by colin stewart (black mountain, destroyer, ladyhawk), the album is far richer and more interesting sounding than their debut. the band perform their dramatic, forlorn and occasionally triumphant music in a wonderfully autumnal haze.

The Cave Singers - Welcome Joy

Review by Tom Perry

You're still a band who are definitely worth seeing live. And there's a better album than this left in you, I'm sure of it. It's just there was the expectation of more, and this has left me a bit cold. »
